One of the greatest love songs ever written. So many amazing lines
Sadly, the the reality is that the love didn't last very long. Almost from the beginning of Denver's marriage to Annie he was involved in incessant affairs. After years of that she finally divorced him.

John Denver wrote this song to his wife Annie after the couple had had an argument. They lived in Aspen Colorado and John went skiing after the argument to cool off. The song was written by John while he was on the ski lift and he sang it to her when he returned home. This is the story that Annie told on a show about John Denver"s life and career.

John Denver's ex-wife, Annie was from Minnesota and her parents owned a restaurant near where I went to college. I went there for a sorority event with a girl who invited me.
About storms in the desert; while they may be dangerous (flash flooding, etc.) while they happen, the desert blooms beautifully after the storm.
That is, and always will be, one of the greatest love songs of all time from my favorite musician of all time. Once belittled by the music industry, John has had the last laugh. Finally he is getting the respect he deserves from the newest reactors, from this generation, and I couldn't be happier that the young people of today are realizing the timeless songwriting and singing of John Denver. RIP John, you are truly missed!
The orchestral arrangement of this song has always impressed me.
The song was written for his 1st wife as pretty much everybody as said. John & Annie divorced because “too young & fame came too fast for them to handle it” or “being on the road pulled them apart” according to them. John’s 2nd marriage was a short-lived disaster despite the the fact that it produced a child (John’s 3rd child- the other 2 were adoptees with Annie).

"Annie's Song" is one of John Denver's very best songs. It was written for his first wife, Annie. As Momma Gap would say, "Beautiful Love Song". Surprising, this is not Annie's favorite John Denver song. In an interview, she admitted that her favorite John Denver song is "Perhaps Love". You should react to that song next. You'll love it.

That is a great recommendation. It's another amazing song by him.
"Perhaps Love" is my favorite song of his as well. Never a big hit, but great art is not always commercial.
Ironically both songs use a comparison between love and the ocean, albeit in different ways - with Perhaps Love delving into a greater, less romantic, more wholistic appraisal of love.
That being said it was made to be performed with Placido Domingo as it is on the studio track, I don't think it could sound right live.

I believe that the story goes that he wrote this song for Annie after they had a major argument and he was on a ski lift in Aspen. He wrote this in about 10 minutes.
His first wife Annie has helped to commerate John's life & songs by making a Park in Colorado where you can see & hear songs done by John.
The best concert I ever went to, 3 hours straight and he never took a break. The band took 4 breaks while John just sat , played and talked.
The ONLY concert I've ever been is John Denver in 1992? in Boise, Idaho. Wow! 3 hrs easy with the Hell's Canyon quartet (classical quartet) playing in the interlude. He chatted us up during the breaks!
I'm crying! Because we lost a true artist when John passed. Your reaction and comments were wonderful! He was a naturalist, love for this planet and the people! I was on vacation in Aspen and visited his memorial garden. So tranquil and simplistic. His quotes were etched into large rocks throughout the garden. Some people just lying in the grass. Ha ha, he says after the interlude "sing with me" and not a peep from anyone. They just want to hear his golden voice. I've heard this song a thousand times and it's one if the few songs I won't sing with just to hear his voice and passion for his wife Annie. What a loss when he left us. The angels gather around in heaven to listen to JD sing. RIP.
Actually we did sing along. He was using a highly directional mic so the audience singing was suppressed.

I first heard this as a teenager. I built my dreams around finding a woman that could evoke the emotion in me that he pours into this song. It destroyed me when I read about his divorce. I thought after these lyrics and those to "Annie's Other Song", if they can't make it what chance do I have.

I had the pleasure seeing John in concert. He is a gifted writer and singer. Shame he died so early.

There is a video of an open-air concert he gave in Ireland. When he got to this song, he sang it in Gaelic from memory.
John also sang Annies Song in about 7 or 8 other languages, in the countries he was performing in. Including Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Welsh, and I've forgotten the others. Amazingly talented and connected person.
Listen to Denver's song 'For You' and I will think you will find it right up there with all time love songs. Can't understand why it never received widespread acclaim like 'Annie's Song'

It has almost a wedding march rhythm. Not uncommon for love songs. Great song. The12 string guitar and mandolin blend perfectly. Storm clouds can be amazingly beautiful in the desert and out west in the high country. RIP.

John Denver was a singer-songwriter & actor. He had so many great hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "Rocky Mountain High", "Poems, Prayers & Promises", "Calypso", "Thank God I'm A Country Boy", "Sunshine On My Shoulders", "Grandma's Feather Bed" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns.
Please react to Home Free's version of "Take Me Home Country Roads". It is one of the best covers of this song. They also do a fun version of "Thank God I'm A Country Boy".

A beautiful song written by John, and beautifully sung, that always makes me cry. I lost the love of my life to cancer 15 years ago (we were married 23 years), and this song always makes me think of her, because that's how I felt about her.
Another song I highly suggest is "Calypso". It's about Jaques Couteau's exploration ship. They had a tight bond through wildlife conservation. Jaques also custom made a diving mask for John with eyeglass lenses so he could see better while diving.
To me this is his best song. Very underated.

I saw John Denver in concert at Arizona State University in 1977; No Smoking Of ANY KIND was one of the first things he said to the audience. It was still a great concert.

Have you heard his song "Calypso", Jacques Cousteau and his research team on the Calypso invited John Denver out an excursion and John, in appreciation put his talented Writing Skills to test, came up with MY Favorite John Denver Song. *- Me after seriously trying a romantic type locker opening (You have No idea how much courage I had to dig way down and find just to do this), what I thought was a nice photo card of Roses just hanging there, approaching her locker between classes, she jumped out and closed the locker door, looked up, saw me grinning and then punched me in the chest as hard as she could muster, stomping off mumbling something about staying out of her business. ????????????

I love John Denver, my mum is a massive fan too, her favourite is Sunshine on my Shoulders…absolutely beautiful. My favourite is his performance of For You from the wildlife concert. Momma gap…this is a “beautiful love song” with such romantic lyrics and an incredible vocal too ..one you definitely have to check out 😊 Baby gap…you said it doesn’t get any more romantic than Annie’s song but you haven’t heard For You..the lyrics to this for me are the ultimate in a love song and speak of total unconditional love and devotion..in my opinion, possibly and probably the best love song ever written. it would be interesting to see which you think is the more romantic of the two😊. Johns beautiful voice and soul is badly missed.
Annie's song is a great song and great for others to use in their lives because it has meaning to others besides what happened to their marriage. Watch the movie and you will be shocked to hear why the song was written. Still a great song.
