He said that it was one of the fastest songs he ever wrote, composing it in about 10 minutes while he was riding on a ski lift in Aspen, Colorado. All of these things filled up my senses, and when I said this to myself unbidden images came one after the other. All of the pictures merged and I was left with Annie. Because he also had some super upbeat stuff like Thank God I'm a Country boy, and, grandma's feather bed. You should check out either of those. And then Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy was it huge hit, especially with the girls, and then to me one of his most beautiful and haunting songs is, Take Me Home Country roads. Around that time I was at this summer camp in the mountains of Colorado with the Boy Scouts, and on one of those nights, we had a bonfire and everyone gathered around and John Denver showed up and played and sang with us and just hung out with us for a while. That was a real treat. It was a surprise kind of thing so you can tell how that would go over with kids, it was awesome. I can still remember the firelight kind of reflecting and flickering off of his spectacles while he sang and told stories. We were impressed that he was also a pilot and had flown in there for the event that night.
