  • This is a peace sign made from casting aluminum in petrobond sand. The pattern was created on a 3D printer from PLA. The pattern is finished with sanding, primer and paint. Sand used for the mold was 190 mesh petrobond. The aluminum was scrap from an aluminum car rim.

I have been wanting to make some smaller shallow flasks like that. I think you just moved it up on my to-do list.

I didn't realize I would start making many different size flasks along with becoming a wood worker when I started casting. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

Thanks for the very easy to understand videos! One question: do you reuse the burnt petrobond sand?

Thanks for watching. When opening the mold I try and do it gently to keep large parts intact. Then I use a wire brush the size of a tooth brush and rub off the burnt black sand into a pile to discard. I also will pick out chunks of burnt sand to discard. I try and minimize the amount of sand that is burnt when returning it to my used sand bucket. Most of my castings if I want a nice surface finish I will use just a little bit of new unused sand for facing sand and pack the rest of the mold with used sand. I will throw this in a video down the road.

What kind of sand are you using?

The sand that I am using in this video was purchased off of Amazon and called "Teton-Bond Petrobond Ultra-FINE (190 Mesh)". I am using sand that was premade by a company because I was concerned about my abilities to make my own sand that had this type of quality. Thanks for watching!
