The First half of the mold you were pounding sand into, the mold needs to be flipped over. You pound from the back and if your on a smooth flat surface, you flip it back over and then press the ring into it. When you scrape the surface you are pressing into like you did, it loosens up the whole top and makes a bad mold.

( i went with the The Complete Handbook of Sand Casting which has some good information but is from 1974 and more about green sand casting) you can make a sprue (a funnle shaped object) out of wood or plastic to create the pouring basin for your cast and you can use a bellows to blow out any sand left in it(i have not tried this yet).
I’m always fascinated by homemade sand solid casting it’s incredible the complexity of the artistry and craftsmanship in making random jewellery or rings great 👍 prep
Hi Lindsay i would like to know if would be okay to cast for example a halo ring that have several spaces between it? Does the sand would be a good casting option for this type of more complex type of pieces?
Just wondering, would it be better to leave the wood in the sand until you are just ready to clamp both metal frames together?? Seem like less possibility of sand falling into area where hot metal will be.

The problem is that gold needs more than 1000 Celsius to melt. This requires a very special gas burner. Most crucibles cool the gold too quickly, causing the gold to harden before it fills the mold. So it's not that easy to get the right equipment and especially that is not cheap.
Never think of sand-casting jewelry. Sand casting is used for large steel parts in the industry. Jewelry needs a shiny surface and that is not achieved through sand-casting. You should only use silicone to cast jewelry.
You would be best using oil than water, also if you use the edge of the metal ruler instead of the thick edge it will flatten better. Also do it in sections not in one go and it won’t make ditches in the sand
@@farouqchiznie8740 it depends upon what you are casting, if silver for example, then Delft Clay which is a sticky, oily clay designed for details in rings and jewellery. There is also Foundry Sand which is a clean, uniformly sized, high quality silica sand, used in foundry casting processes.
It depends on how detailed the ring is. Since you will essentially be making a two part mold, there will always be a small dividing line in between the two parts once cast. I find that thick and detailed ring molds work the best for this method of casting.
nice. I have a question, if the silver we melt and pour in the cast is 925, some of that will be extra as left over, so after melting this extra silver again, will it be still remain as 925?
With modern technology I don't know anybody in the jewellery trade that would use such an archaic method of casting. Surely a more simple methods to produce a ring blank would be to form the ring from a metal bar round a triblet and then to file the shape , why faff around with this method. In the time you spent producing a mould i in sand you could have hand produced a ring. As they say time is money.
You brought up some really great points. It is much quicker to hand fabricate a ring. Sand casting has it's place in the jewelry world for a few other reasons which I would like to point out. 1. It's a good method for someone who doesn't have access to lost wax casting tools 2. It's a good way to reuse metals, including a customer's sentimental gold jewelry 3. The jewelry I often make is from wax carvings and the sand leaves an interesting texture behind. The great thing about craft is there are many ways to do one thing, and we should always be open to learning and exploring new and old techniques.
Well it may produce results but this is far from how a mold maker is trained to make a mold. Plus you run the risk of damaging the metal mold with a hammer. Use a piece of wood instead. I guess the jewelry industry does stuff different
