How a Prosthetic Leg Stays Attached

  • Happy Tuesday Friends!
    I know I have made this video before, but I have a better understanding now. Plus it's my channel and if I want to recreate videos, I can!
    A question I get asked more than almost anything is how my leg stays attached. Well today is the end of all your questions! I show three different systems that I use to keep my leg attached. Different people like different systems so figure out what works best for you!
    Also, please don't take into account that my liner rips in the middle of filming - I have literally been using the seal in system since about 6 months post amputation and it has been my favorite system. But sometimes things happen and things break and then we go to our prosthetists to tell them "I told you I go through these too quickly"
    I appreciate you guys more than ever as I am trying to work hard to get my monetization back and make a little bit of money to help with my big move.
    Love you all!

    Always good to learn stuff. You're right that I had no idea how that would work. Now I do.
    Thank you, you beautiful soul. Be well, hopefully be happy too.

    This is timely for me as I am having fit and alignment problems. I’ve had prostehetic BK legs for nearly 10 months but also still have some wounds so cannot wear a leg all the time. My leg is still changing a lot. My prosthetist has been letting me try different liners and systems for the past few weeks. Your comments are similar to my experiences with each. My reaction to the suction system with the outer sleeve was “I hate this!” Your videos are always helpful. Thank you. ❤

      I'm glad you find my videos helpful, but more importantly, I'm glad your prosthetist is working with you. It is a very long and stressful journey sometimes and it's good to have a good medical team who wants to work with you and not against you.

    Thanks for sharing! I'm a bilateral amputee and I have a vacuum assist suspension sleeve setup. It's similar to yours but it has a vacuum pump as well.

    • @AnnikatheAmputee
      @AnnikatheAmputee  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I could use the vacuum pump. I've heard really good things about them. But my residual limb is having weird vascular issues so my doctors told me that I wouldn't be a candidate for an active vacuum ):

      My prosthetist like having me around. She is verymuch into keeping u with new innovations so she tries them out on me when she can. I feel very lucky t have her. I love your videos. You are very inspiring and every though I'm an old lady I refuse to work from a wheelchair if I can help it. Never give up and if you ever need someone to talk to I'm here for you!

    Nice explanation of each system! I use a sleeve/vacuum system and agree it is bulky and does get hot. So cool you have options! Better every day!!👍

    • @AnnikatheAmputee
      @AnnikatheAmputee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will say that I like the sleeve because it consistently has the least amount of issues when it comes to fit. But the bulkiness and the "not-able-to-show-my-leg"ness makes it my least favorite system

    I use my pin-locking socket the most. It feels more secure. I also notch my liners in the center at the top, so I have a point of reference everytime I put on my liner.

    I had a BK amputation last year and your videos help me through TikTok and TH-cam. I really appreciate you putting stuff out. Do you have any suggestions in regards to a type of moisturizer to use?

    • @AnnikatheAmputee
      @AnnikatheAmputee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have never used a moisturizer on my stump, so unfortunately I do not! I have super sensitive skin though so I probably would use something for baby care. For instance, I wash my liner with baby shampoo because my skin is sensitive. Hope that helps!

    I really enjoy learning from you and others about all the things that y'all have to deal with. On a side note, those sleeves give you interesting tan lines on your leg. I guess it gives the term "farmers tan" yet another unusual meaning.

    • @AnnikatheAmputee
      @AnnikatheAmputee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha yeah it is a crazy tan line! Since my limb almost never sees the sun, I have to be really careful on the rare occasions it does because it burns like nothing I have ever seen before

    If only my stump was that slim haha. When I was first cast, my prosthetist was concerned cause my stump was so bulbous due to my big calf muscles. Finally starting to shrink into a more manageable size and shape but I am always a little jealous of the slim stumps out there having the nicer looking sockets. Is that weird? I think that's weird. Nice video, thanks!

    • @AnnikatheAmputee
      @AnnikatheAmputee  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I used to actually have a friend in the hospital with me that was jealous how quickly my stump shrunk. And even now, I see some other people with slimmer stumps and I get that feeling of being jealous. It is weird to be jealous of something like that but I think its also understandable!

Was my 1st time going, definitely an experience to be around that many amputees and sharing and hearing stories. Like I thought my story was wild🤣 but I heard some that were unbelievable!

    Why are prosthetics not like this in the uk ?

    • @torejorgensen5344
      @torejorgensen5344 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you need to give her a bit more to work with. What is the difference? I looked at two sites making prosthetics for UK (ossur and proactiveprosthetics) which was the two first when I googled "prosthetics uk", and all the suspension methods (or something very similar) mentioned in this video plus one somewhat similar to Martin Bionics seems to be available. I'm not a prosthetics user, so there might be something obvious I've overlooked, but at least I didn't catch on to what the difference is.

    • @AnnikatheAmputee
      @AnnikatheAmputee  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know much about other countries and their prostheses. I did meet a couple of service members with amputations from the UK and their prostheses were similar to mine.
