Lift it the way you want. It doesnt matter how you lift it as long as you like it. We welcome all to the wheeling community and some of the hate comments you get are probably from people that dont go wheeling at all other than stunnting in the mall parking lot.
SR5 may not have a locking diff, but it does have an auto LSD that engages when you turn traction control off. I'm not a hardcore offroader but I do like to explore from time to time, haven't gotten stuck yet! Great vid.
The auto LSD is a great feature but it is not a locker. It only transfers power to the wheel that is not freespining by applying the brake on that wheel. You still only have one wheel getting power at any one time. Locker gives you both rear wheels getting powered. 4x4 with open diffs is just a 2 wheel drive
Bilstein 5100's all the way! I installed them on my 03 4Runner three years ago , after being a KYB Fan for a long time. I will never go back to anything else but Bilstein. I don't do off roading, just a freeway and normal streets, and with bilstein 5100's, it keeps the 4Runner planted well on the road, hardly any sway bounce, helps with gas mileage a bit on longer drives, it leveled the front real nice by moving the snap ring without any spacer, and kept the stock ride but a lot firmer and still comfy for the family... There is a reason why the Bilstein 5100's are very popular, and I just described just a few benefits of it for someone that is not a 4X4 kinda guy..
I'm thinking about installing 5100's on front, but worry about the ride quality and damaging from components. I used to have front spacers, but I removed it due to "skateboard" ride quality and damaged my lower ball-joints and lower control arms. Will the 5100's do the same to the front end in the long run?
I tow a fifth wheel with my 2017 Tacoma TRD Offroad. I did 2 in the front, 1 in the rear and love the stance. I also increased the tires from 70s to 75s (31" to 32" tires). I hate the sagging look, so I left some rake.
Thank you for the video. He said he added a diff drop is that necessary? Reason for asking is I’m doing the Bilstein 5100 front and back the front will be on the 4th clip at 1.5 inches and adding a 1 inch spacer in the back. Plus I’m going with the 265/75R/16 tires. Let me know what you think.
Brother you don’t have to explain yourself to the haters. Someone will always have something to say. Spend within your means and enjoy the hobby. Gorgeous trucks btw.
I did my 2017 with Bilstein 5100/add a leaf, Old Man Emu Front Lift Springs and SPC Upper Control Arms. It measured a full 3” with my 33” BFG KO2. Although the Toco lean played a roll on the driver front being about 2 3/4 “.
Very nice trucks. What is the front diff drop?? I will do coil overs in the future(they seem better than spacers) I put Firestone air bags in the rear, they have been great. Can adjust height/load at will. Improved ride.
Just google 3rd gen tacoma bilstein 5100s and you'll get a number of websites with the setup. Just make sure they say they're for 2016+ models. I'm not sure what add a leaf he went with...
trucks look good but what can you say about the ride quality with the 5100's compared to stock? Do you notice any obvious or subtle differences driving highway/road AND offroad? looking forward to your reply.
Is the sr5 a 4x4 model or 4x2? Where I am @ here in Cali there is no dealership that sells the sr5 4x4 I would have to go to Az to get one. I presently own 2017 trd offroad 4x2 has locking dif though been tempted to sell it get a 4x4 model.
Last Summer I bought an 06 4Runner with only 62,800 miles on it, and it's the Sport Edition. I hated the Xreas suspension it had, besides I think one was starting to leak. I put the Bilstein 5100's all around and that made a huge difference, I kept the same ht because I don't off road, and didn't need the lift. If anyone is contemplating buying the Bilstein's, trust me, they are worth it.
Mike, do you know if Matt had any issues with the tires rubbing with the 265-75R16. I’m planning on doing the same but want to re-gear to 4.88or 5.29 on my 017 TRD OffRoad. Do you know who’s “Add-A-Leaf” Matt used on his SR5 ?
No tire rubbing with 265/75/r16. He does have a 2/1 lift but I believe you can run these tires without a lift and no rubbing as well. I can't recall which add-a-leaf he used.
You're not alone. There's plenty of folks out there who don't want to lose the utility purpose of a truck to a monstrous lift. I think I'm going with the 6112's and 5100's w/3 pack. But what exactly were you guys talking about feeling a vibration and fixing it after lifting?
What’s your recommendation for a full 3” lift on a 2020 SR5 access cab? I just use it as a daily.. no off-roading. I just want the look but I also don’t want any other components getting strained or damaged. What do you think?
If its truly just for looks I'd just go with a spacer in the front and a block in the rear. That will maintain the stock ride but doesn't offer much in the way of added off-road ability. Some people are adamantly opposed to spacers but I had one on my truck for a few years and it was just fine. If you're willing to spend a bit more the Bilstein 5100s are a really good option too because they offer some added travel and reuse the existing front coils which saves some money. Low Range Offroad offers a nice setup: amzn.to/2B5KAGY
Mike C - Thanks Mike. It’s so hard to determine exactly what I need. I have a shop that said they can install the Bilstein 5100’s but another guy told me those are cheap, they won’t give me 3” of lift and they will put stress on other parts. So, I’m just confused.
That is awsome thank you for that I just bought a 2019 SR5 and I wasn't sure if it would be worth setting it up for our Landing because it wasn't a 4 x 4 but this video here just put all my doubts to rest thank you so much now i cant wait to get started...👍👍
They are both 4x4 in the video. Only difference in driveline is the TRD models have a locking rear diff. I wouldn't take a 2 wheel drive on any trails, at least if it doesn't have a locking diff at minimum
Good video but it’s all over the place. Can’t tell who has what on what truck. I like Matt’s set up but can’t tell what he fully did to it because you guys kept going between both trucks. Very confusing. A full breakdown on Matt’s truck would be nice. Thx
You can do front and/or rear. With the 5100s you reuse the existing coils up front with the new shocks. On the rear you add the new shocks to increase travel but you still need to do a block or add a leaf in conjunction if you're wanting to raise it.
I also am very nice to my Tacoma (18trd trd sport) with spacer lift for bigger tires. It's great. I'll probably upgrade after the stock shocks start showing wear. It's not easy to replace parts that are still new.
Sweet im actually thinking of doing the same thing as you mike. Just picked up my trd off road model and it came with bilstien set up ride is smooth hate to ruin it by pre loading the front like the sr5.
I just did a spacer lift 2.5” front and 1” rear, but maybe in the future might go with some bilsteins once you start working with the suspension it’s a piece of cake with the right tools man!
So I just want to make sure I’m clear. Matt’s trucks only has the bilstein 5100’s front and rear and an add a leaf in the rear as well? That’s a nice stance and not too bad of a price
Absolutely. The sport is every bit as capable as this SR5. You don't get a few features that come on the TRD OR and Pro models but its still very good.
Your truck looks great. Close match to Matt's after the changes he's made. Maybe we should get all 3 together some time? No public FB or Instagram account...

Don’t mind the haters, bro. I enjoy the channel.
very nice setups guys, Im a big fan of simple tacomas without all the expensive bullshit
Me to my truck is high enough right out of the box. I never wanted to do a trailer park lift kit on it.

I like the sr5 , better value for the money
It’s a good option if you’re planning to do mods
I have an 18 SR 4x4 with the 4 banger. Bilstein 5100s and 33s. Love my Taco!
@@russellbrown1068 You can get a manual off road cheaper than a 4x4 SR 5

Can you post a list or add a link of the parts that he used?
Would you say that with the 1.55 in front and 2 rear, that you still have an adequate amount of usable rake for light to moderate hauling?
My 2009 Trd Access cab has this same set up....Love it!!!
Haha. Tearing it up on the trails. Lol.
I have the Toyota Tacoma TRD sport sport 2018 and I was wondering if these came out with bad transmissions?
I don't know if bad is the right word but there are definitely many
complaints regarding the shifting on them. Toyota could have done
better.
Do you get much lift with just the shocks?
Yeah, 2 front and 1 rear. A little added height with the tires
The cvt tent in the rear helps with Traction also ..
Those rims look so much better with the bigger all terrains
What in the world is that in back of the white tacoma a barbecuer?
What leaf did he buy?
What’s the difference in the ride?
Still rides great but now if I have to brake hard the nose doesn't dip. No more hitting my bumpstop going over speed bumps anymore either.
I get mine for my 2000 tundra in 2 weeks. I hope they are good. My shocks are so worn out
How many inches of lift with the Bilstein and add a leaf?
1.55” front and 2” rear
Did you not watch the video ?
I did my 2017 with Bilstein 5100/add a leaf, Old Man Emu Front Lift Springs and SPC Upper Control Arms. It measured a full 3” with my 33” BFG KO2. Although the Toco lean played a roll on the driver front being about 2 3/4 “.
What is the needle bearing you spoke about & where does it go ?
Drivers side of front diff where the cv axle goes in. Most replace with the ECGS bushing kit. There's a tsb from Toyota on the needle bearings.
Is that sr5 a 4x4?
Yes it is
A block lift is fine. I had one for years with no issues.
LSanti the only problem with block lift is that especially if you off road, you could potentially twist and bend frame easier
Very nice trucks. What is the front diff drop?? I will do coil overs in the future(they seem better than spacers) I put Firestone air bags in the rear, they have been great. Can adjust height/load at will. Improved ride.

trucks look good but what can you say about the ride quality with the 5100's compared to stock? Do you notice any obvious or subtle differences driving highway/road AND offroad? looking forward to your reply.
Matt feels the ride quality has improved with the 5100s. I've ridden in his truck and can't personally tell a difference one way or the other.
Is Matt using his stock wheels on the sr5? I want to upgrade but can’t afford to buy new wheels.
These are stock TRD OR wheels. He's since gone aftermarket.
