Only scenario where MPG's are saved is with re gearing... anyone stating "I get 20mpg's after a lift" is full of it... I just bought a 2020 TRD OffRoad, and get 19.3 city... setting my adaptive cruise control to 50 mph average for my daily 40 mile commute to work and back. A commute where I have to stop at intersections on average 10 times each direction... so 20 stops daily. My MPG's struggle to improve on the highway... improvement is very slow.
Warning - Rant coming on: So one of the things that concerns me is that the manufacturers are beginning to discourage and actively tell you not to lift - the problem being the electronics and emissions, not calibrated for for these types of changes - the safety equipment not designed for these changes and such. I see both sides of this - There is a tremendous value in all the safety features today. I'm a life long truck buyer. I had an 87 Ranger. Standard gearbox, no electronic systems and loved it. Then came a Dodge Dakota, Then another Ford Ranger, Now a Tacoma. Modding, personalizing and customizing has been a hobby, a culture, ( or a cult) my entire life. BUT. Trucks are changing so much. It's all going crazy - $70K for a Chevy Silverado. Really? And it's loaded with electronic stuff that brakes when you do some of these mods. The industry needs to do an about face. It's all too much. I want a stripped down, simple, and customizable safe modern truck . Most trucks are going in the wrong direction. It's time to pull back and allow folks to do a lift, engine reprogram, or larger tires without such worries. It's time to offer a stripped down truck for 25K ( with a stick ) Curious what others think. Are you happy with the crazy tech at a huge cost or is there a large enough base who just want a more basic truck offering ( that's safe and reliable)
Mike Sawyer I said it once I’ll say it again, if they re-made the 1st Gen Taco or 4Runner... I’d trade in my new one. The original is still my favorite but finding one without a gazillion miles at a decent price... a unicorn.
I’d say most are with you. That said, all new vehicles are full of modules for numerous reasons. I hate them as a tech, but the upside is it helps to diagnose issues, more creature comforts, better mpg, better for crashes and prevention, etc. Previous to my Tacoma, I had a bare-bones Canadian JK. Manual everything, no a/c (stock), 4wd manual shifter, but the damn thing still had a ton of modules. There are a ton of pros to a CANBUS, but it limits a lot of aftermarket as you stated. I’d love to see someone figure out how to remove as many modules as possible, but that’s when we start losing a lot of functionality. The worst is when something you want to change is in the Ecu. The best option I can come up with is ways to delete things but make the module think it’s there and working properly. Some things work off a signal, some work off resistance. Making a dummy signal for the TSS is something I’m extremely interested in.
Hey I totally agree. That’s why I love my 2011. It’s got abs and some traction stuff but that’s all. And I have no desire to upgrade to a newer model to stay away from all the sensors that I don’t need.

I agree with Mike Sawyer, I just had a ready lift spacer kit installed on my 2018 Tacoma and by the way my Tacoma isn’t the sportiest package out there, SR5 4x4, so this was almost a definite need out of the gate. On top of the spacer kit I added the world of difference shocks and struts with the Bilstein 5100 series and the ride is ( to me) 100 percent better. Now it does mean you will need to bring the truck in to have the traction control and the front collision sensor re calibrated but that was $99.00 out the door from Toyota. I had a huge argument with one of the service techs who started by saying I voided my factory coverage but later agreed this was not true. I say don’t punish the consumer for wanting to better his or her ride embrace it, it only make there truck that more noticeable and admired on the road and off the road!!!👍
I sent an e-mail to Toyota headquarters for something. Then when I called the next day I found out Toyota does NOT want people to lift a Tacoma by more than 3 inches if it is a Sport, limited, or any other truck with all the censors, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, back up sonar. They said if you lift it 5 inches it will make the truck ride like crap. They said doing a 5 inch for example: They say you can have all kinds of problems. I also asked about the "snorkel" on the Pro. It is NOT a snorkel and is not meant for that. It is meant for air intake only and if you try to use it like a snorkel you will fry a lot of electrical in the truck.
Did you get the ecgs bushing or not? I'm looking at doing the same lift. Trying to stay on a budget though. I'm going to do icon AALs in the back though.

I had one for a few weeks. It's a good product for the sluggish pedal feel in a stock Tacoma. I ultimately wanted a more encompassing fix so ordered the OV tune, completely happy with the way the truck drives now.
I've been struggling with how to lift my Taco. I contemplated everything from spacer lifts and blocks to a full ICON stage 4. I've decided to go the new Falcon leveling kit. I'm also going with 265/75-16's so that combo will give the leveled stance that I like. Your setup is nice.
Would I be able to add a small spaced lift to a 2018 Tacoma trd Pro ? Also is it possible to add small spacers to the wheels to make them stick out just a little passed the fender ? First truck so I’m new to the truck mod scene. And just to clear things up a bit I bought the trd Pro because I don’t plan on modding it out a lot just small minor things.
Yes to both your questions, I would only do a 1” spacer though because the TRD PRO sits about an inch higher than the TRD Off-Road. For wheel spacers look to BORA or SPYDERS, I would go 1-2” only depending on wheel/tire package.

Absolutely! I'm in the same boat. Make sure you get hub-centric spacers their self aligning and puts the load on the ring. The stance will definitely make a difference I will probably run the stock oem off-road wheels and tires until I can get a set of the (replica) TRD PRO Tacoma wheels because it comes in a 17x8 wheels size which bigger than the stock TRD PRO wheels 16x7.5 you can find it on eBay and its a lot cheaper! I have a 2018 TRD Off-Road Cement Grey coming in 2-3 weeks, I'm going with the Eibach ProTruck Kit which will give me the option to adjust from 1-3" which I may just settle with 2.5"-2.75" height depending on wheel/tire option. Absoluetly NO spacer-lift for my investment.
I barely even got 15 mpg with my 2020 Tacoma. I just put on my eibach pro lift kit and putting on my tires and wheels next week. I want to see what I get afterwards lol
Sound advice. Love the set up you went with. Did you drop the front differential after the 2” lift? I saw your install video and noted you installed the spacers for the rear carrier bearing drop.
Do you like the ride compared to stock? I am looking at the exact same setup you got just to give a little lift but with the heavy spring pac since I have topper and stuff in bed.
I started with the same basic setup with Bilsteins 5100 front (adds 1" of travel-2nd from the top notch/shortbed) and the 265/75/16 AT3 Wildpeaks (32") on a 2016 on a TRD Offroad 4x4 shortbed. Great set up indeed. I just finished the truck by adding the Icon Add a Leaf 1.5" rear lift (part 51100) with the matching 5100 bilsteins. What a difference . Softer hit and much more controlled rebound.Almost 9 inches of travel in the rear. No more "bunny hop" by the rear end. Hit a rut or a bump and the rear end sticks like glue. Get rid of the factory rear overload leaf spring! The Icon add a leaf is a progressive set up that eliminates the Toyota overload spring with 3 progressive leafs. The tires are extremely good in the desert, rocks, and super soft sand. Mileage on the Hwy at 67 mph is 21-22 with ECT/PWR on. I don't have a rack or shell. I just load all the gear and go. Fully loaded, the truck sits nice and ride is much improved over stock. I have done both the Bradshaw trail and Mojave road and all the local stuff like Lytle creek, Anza, etc. I don't rock crawl or anything crazy as this is my daily driver. I don't recommend the single add a leaf kits that leave the stock overload spring, which stiffens the ride considerably. The EMU is a great set up too. Just got to get rid of the stock Toyota front and rear shocks and the rear overload leaf spring! Tacomas are very capable from the get go. A little help does wonders!
@@7913joy No vibrations. Zero. I still have the stock coils in front. Heard a lot of positive on the EMU. I will upgrade the front coils when I add the bumpers and winch. Next will be the front locker. Lift, tires, Add a Leaf, and replace the stock Bilstein shocks should be 1st for any Taco 4x4 except the Pro which has the Fox shocks. Ever notice how they love to compare all the new trucks to the stock Tacoma, say it's so much better, and never mention resale and reliability?
how is the dreaded needle bearing issue that affects 90% of lifted tacomas? i changed mine out on my 17 off road with the clamshell bushing, best mod i did so far lol! any plans for aftermarket upper a-arms?
Like the video, quick question, when you installed the OME lift with the front coils and the rear leaf springs was there any other aspects of the lift? Any drop down spacers for the front diff or front sway bar? And was there an actual OME all inclusive kit that you bought or did you just order the parts individually?
Hey Dave! There were no spacers used in this all inclusive kit from OME. When I spoke with them prior to ordering the kit they said that this was all that was really necessary for this mild lift. Any higher and I would have had to drop the front diff and change some other aspects but it wasn't really what I was looking for at the time.
That's the answer I've been looking for too. So far I've found out that the spacer lift doesn't affect ride quality but I'd imagine a serious offroader wouldn't care as long as you gain off road performance.
I've been having problems with my 07 Toyota Tacoma put 3.5 lift and it was good until you put in 4wd and the front drive axles get in a bind when turning .not sure how I'm going to fix ? Maybe 2.5 level in the front ?
What notch are at on ur front shocks stock or 2 1/2"....I know u can get lift with the coil springs on the bottom notch and have a 2 1/2" coil spring.....??????????
25,000 miles on mine and the best ever meter says, 20.5 miles per gallon. I am still mostly stock, and live in eastern NC. If you get better than my best ever, I do not want to get stuck behind you. I had to drive like there was an egg under the pedal to get that number. I want to understand what it takes to get that number, all the time. I just can’t keep my foot out of it for a entire tank. My 2010 sport got 14 mpg, not stock. It never got better than 18 mpg. It was a manual so, I was ridiculous driving that truck. Crazy fun.
I don't see any scientific proof here on the affects of lifting the Tacoma do you even go off-road ? I think I would listen slot more to a rancher or someone that lives in open country rather than a city slicker.
Nice vid. 2017 Tacoma OR 2wd. I don't hard core off road but do trails. Dealer installed spacer lift with warranty. 3 inch front, 1.5 inch back. 285 70 17 tires. rides perfect awesome stance no rubbing. There's something for everyone.

Suspension lifts should NOT be the way to go about lifting any truck it changes the alignement causing abnormal tire wear & the driveline pitch causing wear & tear on the bearings on the ujoints.
Since you commented two years ago he has been very busy fixing his broken down tacoma he will try getting back to you in couple more years thanks for your understanding.
@@joshuajones3112 not sure about any cheap UCA's. When it comes to my truck, I tend to put the best parts. Try ORW Offroad Warehouse, maybe they got something for you. There's a few of those in SoCal.
@@balenci8425 Your TRD Pro already has great suspension with the fox shocks. Going with Fox, King, or Icon would all be great for high speed offroading. For a little less money I would definitely recommend kits from Bilstein or Toytec. They are full suspension kits, meaning you can upgrade with parts that are meant to work together. There are certainly many other brands, like Rough Country, that make decent products for less money, but wouldn't be an upgrade or provide as good of performance.
If you do not plan on doing hard core offroad driving and like the feel of your stock setup you could always do a spacer lift in the front and add a leaf to the rear.
There's nothing wrong with a spacer lift as long as the spacers are of good quality and the lift is very mild. In my case, I have a 1" in the rear and a 2" in the front and am running Falken AT3Ws. I've seen no impact in performance, even with towing or alignment. Not everyone will do serious off-roading, especially those of us who live in a part of the country where places to off-road are fairly non-existent. For those in my situation and who want a slight lift merely for aesthetics, a spacer lift is fine. If I were to do serious off-roading and/or go any higher than what I have, I would DEFINITELY go with a full suspension lift. However, spending the extra $ on a full suspension lift for a slight lift merely for aesthetics would be, in my opinion, overkill.
Nice! As always informative & to the point with yall. I'm debating between OME BP-51, Kings, or Icons for Overlanding. I've over analyzed things & now I'm not sure what to get LOL... It's not like you can test these things out.
Heavily Meditated You are not serious,are you ? All those setups you mentioned are for desert racing and washboard drivings and they require more maintenance than regular ones. You can overland in your stock truck without any issues unless you carry a lot of weights ,then you can get some Bilsteins with ome heavy load springs. Don’t spend your hard earned money on something you won’t need especially when it comes to suspension, 99% of the people would never be able to fully maximize the usage of those high end shocks.

Yes sir it did! Shocks for all 4 corners, springs, rear carrier bearing spacer, extended brake line for the rear axle too. Oh, and stickers. Haha!

How is the ride quality vs stock? I have a trd sport too and looking to do a similar set up but don't want to lose ride quality
That's the answer I've been looking for too. So far I've found out that the spacer lift doesn't affect ride quality but I'd imagine a serious offroader wouldn't care as long as you gain off road performance.

There's no such thing as a LONG BED. Only full size trucks have long beds. A standard truck bed is 6'. So it's a standard bed kid.

I've been having problems with my 07 Toyota Tacoma put 3.5 lift and it was good until you put in 4wd and the front drive axles get in a bind when turning .not sure how I'm going to fix ? Maybe 2.5 level in the front ?
Sounds like you should look into a front differential drop to flatten out those angles.
What notch are at on ur front shocks stock or 2 1/2"....I know u can get lift with the coil springs on the bottom notch and have a 2 1/2" coil spring.....??????????
25,000 miles on mine and the best ever meter says, 20.5 miles per gallon. I am still mostly stock, and live in eastern NC. If you get better than my best ever, I do not want to get stuck behind you. I had to drive like there was an egg under the pedal to get that number. I want to understand what it takes to get that number, all the time. I just can’t keep my foot out of it for a entire tank. My 2010 sport got 14 mpg, not stock. It never got better than 18 mpg. It was a manual so, I was ridiculous driving that truck. Crazy fun.
Best not to lift to keep everything factory will give a better ride & save gas.
I don't see any scientific proof here on the affects of lifting the Tacoma do you even go off-road ? I think I would listen slot more to a rancher or someone that lives in open country rather than a city slicker.

Nice vid. 2017 Tacoma OR 2wd. I don't hard core off road but do trails. Dealer installed spacer lift with warranty. 3 inch front, 1.5 inch back. 285 70 17 tires. rides perfect awesome stance no rubbing. There's something for everyone.

Suspension lifts should NOT be the way to go about lifting any truck it changes the alignement causing abnormal tire wear & the driveline pitch causing wear & tear on the bearings on the ujoints.
What old emu coil do you have on it 885 or different thanks

@@balenci8425 Your TRD Pro already has great suspension with the fox shocks. Going with Fox, King, or Icon would all be great for high speed offroading. For a little less money I would definitely recommend kits from Bilstein or Toytec. They are full suspension kits, meaning you can upgrade with parts that are meant to work together. There are certainly many other brands, like Rough Country, that make decent products for less money, but wouldn't be an upgrade or provide as good of performance.
If you do not plan on doing hard core offroad driving and like the feel of your stock setup you could always do a spacer lift in the front and add a leaf to the rear.

There's nothing wrong with a spacer lift as long as the spacers are of good quality and the lift is very mild. In my case, I have a 1" in the rear and a 2" in the front and am running Falken AT3Ws. I've seen no impact in performance, even with towing or alignment. Not everyone will do serious off-roading, especially those of us who live in a part of the country where places to off-road are fairly non-existent. For those in my situation and who want a slight lift merely for aesthetics, a spacer lift is fine. If I were to do serious off-roading and/or go any higher than what I have, I would DEFINITELY go with a full suspension lift. However, spending the extra $ on a full suspension lift for a slight lift merely for aesthetics would be, in my opinion, overkill.
Nice! As always informative & to the point with yall. I'm debating between OME BP-51, Kings, or Icons for Overlanding. I've over analyzed things & now I'm not sure what to get LOL... It's not like you can test these things out.
Heavily Meditated You are not serious,are you ? All those setups you mentioned are for desert racing and washboard drivings and they require more maintenance than regular ones.
You can overland in your stock truck without any issues unless you carry a lot of weights ,then you can get some Bilsteins with ome heavy load springs.
Don’t spend your hard earned money on something you won’t need especially when it comes to suspension, 99% of the people would never be able to fully maximize the usage of those high end shocks.

I do go to baja California for the desert/washboard trails camping near Ensenada Mexico & Pismo Beach, CA for the dunes & rock crawling in Big Bear, CA...Overlanding is what I'll do most but I still do everything else. I totally agree with you on maximizing the shocks & getting my money's worth. Not one of those dudes 👍thanks
