  • Some people put their PCs to sleep to save energy, some people DISABLE sleep so they always have access, but what's the best solution for you? Whether a PC should be set to hibernate, sleep, or be shut off depends on the situation, and your personal preferences regarding gluten-free food. Don't ask me how that works in, it just does.

    I turn off my PC, unplug it, and then completely disassemble it and place all of the components in static resistance bags, and then I reassemble it when it's time to start back up.

      Mrs. Roper I get 6 hours of sleep a day and it’s perfect. Everybody is different.
      And because I have been Bodybuilding for the past couple years, more than 6 hours of sleep causes my muscles to tear more and become more painful.
      Btw I sleep from 11pm to 5am and my schedule is
      -Eat Breakfast + Coffee
      -Morning Jog
      -Work
      -1.5 Hours at the gym
      -Sleep
      And this schedule requires me to sleep the same amount of time every night so I can fit all of these into my schedule every day.
      Life’s great and very refreshing!

    • @Greyghostvol1
      @Greyghostvol1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Daxxie GFX (Gaming) It's like what Linus said, doing this isn't going to dramatically deteriorate the components to the point where they're going to die in a relatively short amount of time.
      Every component dies eventually. The point is to have them last long enough for your needs. For example, I tend to replace my GPU every 2-3 years (I usually get the highest or second highest tier in a given period of time). Because of this, it's of less concern to me if my particular practices leads to my GPU having a greater risk of failing at year four instead of that same risk existing at year six. This is of a greater concern to those that replace their GPUs less frequently, and of zero concern to those that upgrade every year.

      pyre78 Passive cooling via the heatsinks with the fans off can be enough in idle. My psu for example rarely uses its fan because it doesn't have to, even when gaming.

    • @Angel-wo8gv
      @Angel-wo8gv 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +pyre78 I understand your concern but heatsinks DO a lot of passive cooling on their own. When turned on but idle my 4770K rests at just 800mhz with 1-2% load and i can keep it that way for hours with an increase in temp of just 7-8 degrees (celsius).

    I use my PC (desktop) for the longest period time in the morning, which is when I write my tales, research, or shop.I step away from my PC for 2 to 3 hours intervals, so when I step away from it during the day, I simply put it to sleep for those few hours. Then I come back to it and check things -- Facebook etc. Then when I step away again I put it in sleep mode. But at night, when I go to bed, I turn it off for those 6 to 8 hours. Then it's rinse & repeat starting in the morning. 1. Use, sleep @ day breaks. 2. Bed time, off.

    Best advice is to hibernate instead of sleep if you are going to one of the 2 instead of shutdown... but I suggest that you save your work first and exit if you were typing something in a password protected document for example. It does not matter if you have a hard disk drive or not as either way it should not take too long to turn back on, it should still be faster then if you just booted up the computer instead.

    Great video as always Linus. Just a question, don't all electronics components have an Average Rated Lifetime Hours ? Meaning that leaving the PC On all the time is a matter of necessity (Server, Remote Access, etc) rather than a convenience. Although I'm almost certain that the average rated lifetime hours of PC components is very high, but it still is there. Please correct me if I'm wrong. :-)

    • @EnricoDias

      There isn't a bottleneck. The OS probably doesn't need to read 8gb from the ssd to boot.

    • @Chuckiele
      @Chuckiele 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Waking up from hibernation with an SSD is way faster than with an HDD but it obviously isnt faster than booting normally because booting normally with an SSD is also faster than with an HDD. Especially when running WIndows 8 or 10: Those have a feature called Fast Boot which is basically semi hibernation. It writes everything system relevant to the hard drive but not the programs you are running so that it will boot very quickly. And what do you think is faster: Copying 1GB from SSD to RAM or copying 2-8GB? It just depends on your needs. Maybe youre running many programs sorted in a special way on your monitors. Then the few seconds faster boot isnt worth it preparing everything again, instead of just hibernating.

      prettylolitadoll my computer boots in 2 or 3 seconds (from bios to login screen). In order to wake up from hibernation in 2 seconds it needs to read 4Gb/sec from the SSD and the sata interface itself will limit it to 600Mb/seg.

      @BAT EATER nicehash is a pretty popular one, no programs/sites require an actual mining rig, all of them can use your desktop pc. it's just that it isn't a feasible option to mine with a desktop pc because a dedicated bitcoin miner will have a much higher hashrate compared to your gpu/cpu. i only mine overnight while i sleep and mine roughly $2/night, it's more beer money than anything.

    Great video,I have started using the sleep mode for this new PC build that I recently put together because as you mention in your video there are concerns as to how much wear and tear completely shutting down a PC can cause on the PC components.I bought SSD drives which is what I will be using from now on and I have to say that this new PC build is fantastic,once the PC goes into sleep mode if I didn't know better I would swear that the PC is completely powered off and waking the PC is a snap.I decided to use sleep mode because when the PC is running the cooling fans are also running which means that the PC is drawing in dust when I am not using it.I decided against completely powering off the PC because I share my PC with my other half and she doesn't like having to turn the PC on from a cold boot so sleep mode in my opinion fits the bill perfectly.Thank you for another great video and may God bless you and your family.

  • @pgplaysvidya

    watching this in 2019 i learned something
    My brother has 32 gigs of ram and was getting blue screens. I asked him what he was doing, which was mostly video games, opening 1000 applications, and *putting his computer to sleep at night*
    It turned out after many months of periodic troubleshooting that one of his ram sticks was not working properly. Something about read/write errors when we ran a ram test. When we pulled that ram stick out, it solved the problems
    I figure what happened must be putting the computer to sleep was putting a chunk of data onto the bad ram stick and when it restarted, the bad data caused an unrecoverable error leading to the Blue screen.

    I'm not an expert. But, from hearing experts talk about this, I think one can fairly assume that the only thing that could potentially die from turning off your pc every day is your HDD, which is one of the cheapest components on your pc (atm, you can get 1tb hdd for 30 bucks). You should back up important data anyways. And that's only after years of use, so I think it's worth it, since pretty much pc runs really smoothly after a fresh start.

  • @ErdrickHero

    I usually leave my PC on unless I'll be gone for multiple days or it's a particularly hot day and it's not in current use. Unfortunately my new home has old wiring and my computer is being blamed for a breaker that keeps tripping. I'm considering setting my (desktop) computer to hibernate when I'm not at my desk, however I've got a mechanical drive and I don't want to wear it out. The drive is only 3-4 years old, exactly how bad would the power on/power off cycles be if I were to do this multiple times a day? What if I only did it overnight?

    I get into about this all the time. My pcs have been running non stop for the last 30 years, all of them still run. Temp changes are what kills circuitry especially if you have pc in cold area. Starting it up heats up the circuits and causes expansion and contraction when cooling off. It doesnt take a genius to see how this can affect your main board over time. Let them run and they always atay at same temp and avoid expansion /contraction.

    • @SamPhoenix_
      @SamPhoenix_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't see how letting the dust settle would reduce dust buildup? As long as you have good filters and airflow leaving it on would be better?

    • @daniilmaksimov1911
      @daniilmaksimov1911 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Fans push more air (and more dust with it) throughout your components.

    • @SamPhoenix_
      @SamPhoenix_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But good air flow keeps the the air (and dust) moving and stops it from settling on top of all your components, so as long as you have good filters (therefore reducing the amount of dust that comes in with the air) surely just making sure the dust doesnt settle would be better?

    • @daniilmaksimov1911
      @daniilmaksimov1911 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What do you mean by "good air flow"? A "wind tunnel" like one? Based on my expirience the dust sticks to all air resistant parts of the components and it doesn't go away with the flow. I use an air pump to clenup fans and radiators. And I do agree that you need filters, but without good sealed case it won't help as much as it can.

      Why would he though? This is a channel about IT? What's that got to do with the areas of the United States? Are you under the impression the world is something like "the USA and weird foreigners"? Because you're certainly coming off that way.

    I gotta recheck which one is my desktop using, as when I leave it alone for more than 30min it shows the screen inmediately but starts working excessively slow and takes around 10s to start working normally. Weird thing, I'm pretty sure I disabled hibernating months ago.
    Anyway, I can't troubleshoot it now, my PC is in my bedroom and my wife is sleeping there, I'm using the laptop at the living room at the moment.
