  • A Sonic Unleashed remaster or PC port has been requested for years. But despite the requests, a port of the game still doesn't exist, but why is that? Let's discuss this in today's video!

I always assumed it was because they lost the source code or porting to current hardware would require massive rewriting of the game's code, given how they were made for X360 (PowerPC) and PS3 (Cell). But the theory about the Havok licensing makes a lot of sense!
Your theory might explain why from Lost World onwards Sonic Team never used the Havok engine again and why the controls and physics from then onwards degraded so much. Peharps Sega prohibited them from using the Havok engine and they had to create something new from scratch.

    So, some clarification/context
    1. Havok isn't a full engine, it's a physics engine/plugin. Unleashed runs the Hedgehog Engine 1.0 which has Havok Integrated into it to handle Physics. Just like how Zelda BOTW/TOTK runs Nintnedo's EPD In-House engine with Havok Integrated to help act as a simulation engine for physics.
    2. Sonic Colors Ultimate was mainly a case of mismanagement and time, Blind Squirrel showed they were perfectly capable of making an excellent remaster with their previous effort on Mass Effect Legendary Edition. SEGA contracted them and gave them a goal (remaster Sonic Colors for all platforms, including/especially Nintendo Switch), and gave them not enough time and/or budget to complete the project. Therefore, leading to the jank with Godot Engine being used as a wrapper for the render and how slapdash it feels.
So Sonic Unleashed not getting a remaster yet is purely time/investment based, SEGA either hasn't found a developer/want to remaster it, or they have found a developer/team and are giving them actual time to remaster the game properly like Blind Squirrel's 2 yearlong effort of making Mass Effect Legendary edition.
Theoretically, a new engine for Unleashed could work out...if care was put into the porting/refactoring effort.
Wrappers can be used...but have shown their inefficiencies (Colors Ultimate and GTA The Trilogy DE)
However, there are 2 other types of upgrades that can be done
There's the type that Retro Studios and Monolithsoft did for Metroid Prime Remastered and Xenoblade Definitive Edition, and also what could be what Rockstar may be doing for the rumored Read Dead Redemption Remaster, AKA port the game to the most modern version of their in-house technology (Mainly the renderer for XBC:DE)
Then there's another route which could lead to massive dividends and room for adjustments if the codebase of the original is just right, aka a direct porting into Unreal Engine.
The example of this is Crisis Core Reunion from Square Enix. The original Crisis Core's source code is purely C++ which, becuase UE4 can take C++ perfectly, allowed them to pretty much /import Crisis Core's PSP version into UE4's editor and work from there to enhance and tweak it.
So if Hedgehog Engine 1 was purely written in C++, they could theoretically move it's source code and assets into UE5 if the formats are right. Or better yet, if HE1 code isn't incompatible with Hedgehog Engine 2's Editor (Frontiers), just directly up-port it like Metroid Prime Remastered or Xenoblade DE.

I mentioned this in my reply to this video as well, the director of Sonic Frontiers stated in an interview last year that Hedgehog Engine V1's source code was actually lost. He mentioned that they came to this realization during development when they went to try and integrate movement options and control styles reminiscent of what they did in Unleashed and couldn't not find complete libraries of the code so they had to rebuild what they could from feeling and what little documentation had survived over the past decade or so. Really wish there were better ways of preserving this type of data.

That sounds promising ^ that said, I do agree with SF on this one it's not something they need to rush at all. If you're going to remaster this game... do it in a way that does it justice. I only played this game last week after years of hearing it was kind of mid and I was legitimately surprised by how fun it actually was.
One thing I should note as well is Sonic Heroes using RenderWare isn't necesarrily a deal-breaker as while Renderware itself is no longer supported EA does still allow those previously held a license to re-use the engine which is what they themselves did with Burnout Paradise's remaster. That said, given how old Heroes it's hard to imagine renewing that license would be worth the return in revenue.

    • @jakd.rabbit
      @jakd.rabbit 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective well, Stellar Entertainment (developer of Burnout Paradise Remastered and NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered) are made up of former Burnout developers who made the Renderware engine which EA 100% owns after acquiring Criterion Software and Renderware from then parent corporation, Canon (the camera company), back in 2003. That's how they had access to the Renderware HD engine (as well as it being integrated into DICE's Frostbyte), but the engine as a whole being unsupported and unavailable is why GTA: the Trilogy was ported to Unreal Engine for the (not so) Definitive Edition release and why games like Katamari Damacy Reroll and We Love Katamari Reroll are ports built in Unity Engine as those engines have adaptive plugins that support porting Renderware natively but it isn't 100% and still requires the devs to do some work to get some things running.
What I am getting at is that it is doable but Sega doesn't really have the track record for me to think they can do it correctly.

I think the main reason why Unleashed never got a port or remaster is because it was harshly panned by critics at the time the game was released. Most of the hate Unleashed received was the result of it being the next mainline game after Sonic 06 and that was the time when hating on the Sonic franchise became a trend.

While Havok might still be a potential issue, I think the bigger issue is hedgehog engine which is not supported on modern consoles as it was phased out for the updated hedgehog engine 2. The game's code would have to be updated to work with the new engine or completely changed to work with a different engine (like what they did with colors ultimate probably because the outside team did not have access to or did not know how to use hedgehog engine). moving the game to a different engine is a time-consuming process that can have mixed results as shown by colors ultimate and I doubt any of the internal teams familiar with hedgehog engine 2 are available to remaster this game so there is a good chance that if the game was getting remastered, the engine will get changed. This is assuming the game is getting a remaster and considering colors ultimate's reception and the higher ups at Sega knowing the costs of remastering one of these games now, I don't think a remaster of this game is likely.

I'm fairly confident that the lack of any word on a re-release of the game has nothing to do with an unwillingness to license the project off to other developers. SEGA's not the biggest company in the industry, but they're big enough to have multiple divisions working on different projects at the same time. They could easily handle it in-house by having the Sonic Team division working on the newer mainline games such as Sonic Superstars while another division of SEGA handles porting the already existing Sonic Unleashed to newer hardware.
Replacing a song isn't really a big deal either, as mentioned in the video they could simply have the song get re-performed so that they have a version of it that they can use, or just replace it with a completely different piece of music entirely. They might get some flack for it either way, but if it gets the game out then I think that's the thing people would more care about.
I don't even think that licensing the Havok engine is even the problem. Even if for whatever reason they're unable to acquire the necessary rights, having to redo physics on a new engine wouldn't even be all that big of a deal for experienced devs. It would be a lot of work, but that only amounts to them doing their jobs.
Therefore, my speculation regarding why it hasn't happened yet is this; Publishers care about two things primarily: Money, and franchise growth. Just earning profits isn't enough, they need to be able to expand the reach of a franchise to new customers to multiply those profits. As such, a fanbase of guaranteed profits isn't necessarily enough to get a project greenlit, there needs to be something convincing them that such a game will do better than that on release and attract new customers, and that needs to happen at a time when either a division of the company isn't occupied with developing anything else or there's reason to trust a third party dev studio with the project.

But, these games are well regarded as top tier entries in the franchise. Unleashed, really isn't. When Unleashed first came out I thought people were far too kind to it, in more recent years that has changed to a more divided opinion. Why would Sega bother?

After Colors and some parts of Origins, I'm afraid that one day more remasters of old games will happen including Unleashed, which is one of my favorites.
Somehow they managed to ruin Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which is my favorite game of the classic era, at least several fixes have been made now with Origins Plus, but still one cannot help but say that Sega took too long to fix them and that a company that wants the trust of its buyers should be more careful with its products at launch and not leave to fix everything afterwards.

I also feel like it could possibly have something to do with Sonic Unleashed using the 4Kids cast. I dunno if 4Kids is still around or not, but if they were to remaster Unleashed, they'd have to go through 4Kids or, at the very least, pay the cast for using their voices. The licensing issues for both the theme and engine don't seem very likely if you ask me. Mainly because the game is still being sold digitally on the Xbox and PlayStation stores. Maybe it's more complicated than that, but I think the reason is that Sega is too scared to.
Why? Well back when the game came out it was mercilessly ridiculed by a bunch of out of touch news outlets and people who didn't even play the game because they thought the Werehog was dumb (which it is, but it's not trying take itself that seriously when he literally has stretchy powers). People like Egoraptor to this day always bring Unleashed up like it's this gross stain on the franchise like "lmao, remember when he furry" despite how Unleashed probably has the highest budget and most amount of polish out of any Sonic game before Frontiers.
I'm not saying that a port won't ever come, in fact I think it's very likely considering Sega recently has shown Sonic's history a greater deal of respect, even with games like 06 like making new art of Elise, adding Mephiles to the mobile games, and giving 06 an entire section in the 30th Anniversary Symphony alongside Unleashed. It's just that either Sega is unsure about its potential or they just don't have the time or resources to do it right now.

The best way I found to play unleashed on pc is on the ps3 emulator you can actually play the game from star to finish but still the frame rate is still the same and sometimes it freeze not as frequently as the 360 emulator tho.

I think I heard that Sega lost the source code for Unleashed.

Sonic Unleashed is a game I’ve been begging to try out but its been stuck on older consoles and i only have a PlayStation and Nintendo switch but I ain’t going buy a whole new console for one game, I’m hoping i can play it some day but i might try to emulate it instead

if Sonic x Shadow Generations is a success and is good then I have faith on an Unleashed remaster. Maybe with more refined controls but still feeling like Unleashed and not Generations.

What I’ve heard is that they legitimately lost a decent chunk of the files. I can’t remember where, but that’s what I heard

Sonic Generations is still on digital storefronts like Steam lol; Havok licensing is not an issue.
Unleashed most likely won't get remastered for the same reason it was delisted from PSN/XBLA in the first place: low review scores.
Renderware remasters keep coming out all the time so I'm not sure what you mean by "defunct" since the rightsholders continue licensing the engine out
