Spike, you're such a gem; this kind of set would be ridiculous to digest on my own. It's so nice to have you working hard to keep us up to date with everything. Thank you
Would be really excited if boom/bust land destruction decks become more of a thing because of all the land effects in mh3, love seeing those kinds of decks
I'm doin landfall steppe lynx, turn one flagstones, force of virtue, zuran orb, steppe lynx. Turn two ghost quarter, tap flag, ghost my flagstones, two more triggers landfall, tap one land cast brought back, bring back flag and ghost, sac flag to orb, idyllic grange swing for 14 turn two?
I greatly appreciate the speed at which you come out with these. Most of my friends don't follow spoilers as closely as I do. So it's cool to find someone knowledgeable about the format to give me ideas while spoilers are so coming out. Would love to see more of this in the future from you.
I love this format for spoiler videos. Your spoiler videos had started to get really long. You've pared them down for the last couple sets, but I think you might've even hit the two hour mark before. These are much longer for a viewer not keeping up with them, but I can easily fit a 30 minute video into my day. So I've been watching everyday. It's also great that you're going into detail on what seems like more cards than you normally would.
i mean it would be so much worse if you tapped it because you dont get etbs and if it was tapped all it would do is provide activated and static abilities (still probably good lol)
Estrid's Invocation can copy Leyline Binding and always lock down the biggest threat your opponent has. It can also copy stuff like Abundant Growth to draw you a card every turn, which I know isn't a *good* idea, but it's an idea.
Sink into stupor seems like the strongest MDFC so far imo, it seems like a really potent effect on a land. So much better than jwari disruption it’s not even funny
Shifting woodlands holy bejeesus. Its not even legendary. It enters untapped?? It taps for a color??? It doesn’t even need you to tap it for you to win???? Wth wotc
@@8Blackmamba81 there different. Dark depths is a finisher. Woodlands is an enabler. More times than none enablers have been the most problematic broken cards than finishers. Ask legacy players
The fact that Sundering Eruption can target basics is not nothing. Definitely a huge upgrade for those decks based around punishing greedy manabases (although those aren't exactly meta-defining right now lmao)
Also, with shifting woodlands you can minus a strong planeswalker, send it to the grave because you minused it, then copy it with shifting woodlands and plus it.
Think pyrosurfer I think is a bit better than mentioned here. Though I agree the 3rd mana it effectively needs is a bit rough. 1. The common MH3 fetchlands have been officially spoiled which I think could go in a deck. The common fetchlands tap for 1 colorless and then you can sacrifice them whenever for a tapped basic. This means you could use them in your mana base then not sacrifice them until you have 3 lands so your third land doesn't necessarily have to be a fetch. 2. They have introduced 2 new premium cards that come with at least 1 extra bodies. Amped Raptor & Ajani. This also maximizes ajani if he does flip since in mono-white his 0 cost ability is just waaaaay worse than if you have some red cards. Think if the thought is 'we put it into existing shells it doesn't have a home'. I'd agree, but it's entirely possible there is some new deck that this goes in that is better. Definitely not an S-B but F feels a bit harsh for a card that can make you swing for 18+ on T3. Collector's Cage is cool and built it in paper since it's pretty cheap, but it's fundamental issue is even if it's good at triggering the hideaway the deck just doesn't have the density of strong hits to make that super reliable of a gameplan. There might be another go wide aggro strategy that just focuses on killing quicker & faster, but give Modern has had less viable aggro decks than legacy over the last few years any form of aggro might be just impossible.
Soon when an opponent plays an unfamilar card in modern the question won't be "Woah, what set was that from?" but "Woah, which Horizons did you have to camp the midnight release of to find 4 of those?"
My crazy (probably terrible) idea with Woodland is to play almost a Hogaak-style shell with Altar of Dementia, Carrion Feeder, Stitcher's Supplier, Vengevine, etc, until you turn your whole deck over and hit Protean Hulk, which you copy with Woodland and sac to combo and win.
You didn't mention it but Estrid isn't new but a reprint into modern. It seen limited legacy play in some azorios prison enchantress builds mostly around energy field, ETB monarch/initiative, etc. Maybe take a look at some of those legacy decks as a starting point, maybe a revived white enchant prison build from yesteryear I keep holding out hope for crystaline sliver, nullrod, opposition agent, and councils judgement. Oh and that commander tron land.
If you have the mana, you can even shifting an emrakul discarded with the trigger on the stack. If you are going to the Omniscience built, you already would have Emrakuls on the deck in a way...
That new land is just bonkers. I can't wait to play with this set. Also will be playing toxic deluge. Shadow will always have a spot in my heart no matter what and deluge helps shadow.
T1 Bauble, crack Bauble, Fetch, crack for a forest, Grazer, put a Sunken Citadel into play, Flare of Cultivation, put a basic into play. T2 You have Bauble, a Fetch, a Grazer, and a Flare in your yard (Delirium is on), and a forest, a basic, and a Sunken Citadel in play. Play Shifting Woodland. You can tap the Sunken Citadel, the forest, and the Shifting Woodland to activate the Woodland, meaning that you have one extra mana (of any color, since you got the basic off of Flare of Cultivation) to get something worth copying into your graveyard. Sadly no Faithless Looting anymore, but I'm sure there's something out there.
Marionette apprentice seems more comparable to blood artist or zulaport cutthroat. It’s the same effect but comes with a 1/1 token which is great in those types of decks because it’s another body to sacrifice. I think spike might’ve missed that it triggers on creatures too
spike reef worm + greater good lets you draw and discard and absolutely absurd amount of cards which could let you pretty easily set up a massive hollow one vengevine turn.
I don't see raptor in a deck with four drops right now, you just don't want to whiff on turn 2. Maybe in a dedicated energy deck, with other payoffs besides raptor. Still best card in the set, but the applications in decks with a curve higher than 2 are unclear.
Glad to see someone excited for this set at least! Personally I think most of these cards are underwhelming and clearly just reprinted for commander (even though they literally made COMMANDER precons for the supposed MODERN set)
Very cool format. I don't really play modern (yet?) but I do watch a decent amount of your videos so having an overview of what you think about the cards is really interesting to me.
What about using Wavebreaker in a wizards list rather than a prowess list? There's not too much competition in the 1 drop slot, and it works to both be a 1 drop wizard and something that can potentially trigger prowess sometimes in the mid game for slickshot or soul-scar mage
20:54 I think Triton Wavebreaker should be compared to soul-scar mage. Soul-scar mage has one more toughness, is red and turns noncombat damage to creatures into -1/-1 counters. That's not much, aside from the toughness maybe, so i think it could make sense to cut Soul-scar Mages for Triton Wavebreakers to gain the modality it gives in the bestow option
I think the main thing I'm interested in for Marionette Apprentice is if it will be played in yawg over blood artist/zulaport since it generates fodder and doesn't die to bowmasters/ren and six
@aspiring spike. have you posted your thoughts on the energy aluren card called primal prayers. That card seems like it is going to birth a very strong creature combo deck and I havent seen much buzz around it.
marionette apprentice is not just damage when an artifact dies, also damage when a CREATURE dies. that's a huge difference, way better than disciple of the vault, this is disciple of the vault PLUS 4 more "lose life on death" cards for a deck that cares about that effect. not good in yawgmoth since it doesn't gain you life, but there are some marginal modern decks that use effects like this.
Something interesting about Amped Raptor flipping over a Galvanic Discharge is that you can just target the amped raptor, pay 1 energy to cast discharge, and then get 3 more energy, setting up for a really big energy play later
I like that guide of souls looks like a Kaldheim card using kaladesh energy. I do hope they bring energy back into standard one day, but not on kaladesh
I'm not convinced Disruptor Flute is great against Amulet just because they can often afford to pay 9 mana for Primeval Titan, especially if you've spent a turn casting Disruptor Flute. But it seems great against the other decks you mention!
About Triton Wavebreaker, the prowess 1-drop - I agree it's probably worse than Soul-Scar Mage as a creature, but it still has a ton of potential. You can play it in a prowess deck without red, you can sacrifice it to Flare of Denial, and it even counts as an enchantment for DRC.
Holy shit, that card is absolutely busted. How did they ever think that was okay? A free Cyclonic Rift attached to your 7-drop? Sojourner's Companion now draws you 3 cards and clears your opponent's whole board for minimal investment
MH3 seems significantly more balanced than MH2, really like the way the design is going (not a fan of pitch elementals and saga). Also surprised by the forest copy land though
I think spike is heavily overrating raptor. your not playing many 4 mana cards in your raptor decks and the number of times you flip a 4 drop AND have 4 energy is pretty unlikely. its a decent 2 for 1 but I dont think its flipping anything over 2 mana often enough for it to be as highly rated as your thinking. not saying it isn't very very good though.
This plus the energy bolt, cantrip and attune set you up to cast anything from the ring, omnath and marvel (I do think marvel might be the nuts now) and that's just a few options, not to mention just being a strong value card
This is what I was saying on the last video. Every 4 drop you play with raptor for the highroll is another 4 drop you can whiff on early game. Unless all of your low drops are energy producers and payoffs that are independently powerful, the tension there doesn’t seem worth it. Card still seems incredibly good with a 2-cost restricted deck though.
