  • Ira Schepetin / Atma Chaitanya is a student of the ancient Indian Philosophical-Spiritual Tradition of Advaita Vedanta, which teaches the Non-Dual Nature of the Self. For over 45 years he has studied with eminent Indian and Western Scholars of the subject. He has undergone many years of ‘discipleship’ and instruction, in the original Sanskrit, with orthodox Renunciate Swamis belonging to this Non-Dual tradition. He has presented academic papers internationally and has published numerous articles on Non-Duality in various Philosophical Journals.
This talk was filmed by Bill Alves on July 16, 2015 in East Hampton, NY. Edited by Loretta Bechert.

I think this is the first time I am able to appreciate non-duality from a very simple humanistic point of view. Thanks, Ira Ji for this great talk. Love your statement "I am the witness of time".

Iraji's a sage. Proof positive that the most intelligent discussion of these topics will only rarely -- if ever -- come from the mouths of famous, for-profit swamis, much less from academics! The best kind of adept of non-dual teachings is 5% devotee, 95% autodidact. Ira has spent decades poring over Sanskrit and English-language materials related to Vedanta and Indian philosophy, and not a little time discussing the issues with his friends. His teaching is satisfying, like a gourmet meal.

One of the best, most distilled, most laid-out descriptions of Advaita Vendatta I've ever encountered.
I have some intellectual push-back I'd like to present, but trying to tap-out such on a phone's keyboard, is too cumbersome. Let first points ride...
    :)
PS: Now that I have use of a real key-board, and not to detract from the beautiful presentation and distillation of such powerful teaching on Self Realization, BUT, I noticed Ira claiming with such force that "this isn't religion", yet he states that there is a whole town/university/ashram, in Rishikesh, where as he says, hundreds of monks have renounced worldly life, and devoted all their efforts to learning this philosophy. This is where I have a bit of "trouble". 1) This "witness" that he talks about, that he says with such fervor is "experientially real", and how he states so repetitiously and emphatically that it's NOT a "religion or belief" (he states this so many times when talking about Advaita Vendata that it almost negates itself by the effort to distinguish itself from "belief, faith and religion"...AND point number. Still, at the core of SELF-REALIZATION, tremendous "FAITH" is required. 2) You have hordes of folks "striving" for "what they already are"; Still, as personal and as like-able as Mr. Schepetin is, one doesn't get the sense that he's talking from said "Enlightenment", but rather as a profound scholar that has a gift to relay such profundity on an "everyday level", so the masses can understand. By-the-way, I play the devil's advocate here, not out of disrespect, but rather, knowing this "philosophy" (calling Advaita Vendata a "philosophy" is a mistake in it self"...yet point taken, bc in referring to it, we must call it something, no?) intellectually myself, from hearing countless Nisargadatta and Ramana Maharshi TH-cam talks and reading books...yet it is still a "philosophy/teaching to me", and it is not known to be "the absolute Truth", as I know and feel it in my heart to be---from a position of having said Enlightenment myself. This isn't to dismiss or diminish the Truth presented here, only to jibe and agitate "the teaching", so I/we can gain a better awareness and knowingness of the Truth presented.
It's funny how some folks can be gifted with such Grace to "get-it", while OTHERS labor a life "striving". Maybe as Nisargadatta admonishes, through japa and repeating the mantra of Brahman on a daily basis, hourly basis, we'll be so "AWAKENED".
    God-Bless US ALL! :)
PS: Also, I might h add, I haven't "turned-within" as is so required. I'm hanging on Maharshi's refrain that "even a householder can-should remain on the path, and has an opportunity to become so aware and enlightened to his REAL NATURE, SELF-ILLUMINATION. (I had my first child x2-years ago, and i'm x50-years now, and working to provide for our family...so it's tough to "give-up that".) I get-it that the "world outside experienced by our senses", will not lead us to the profound truth of our BEING, and that turning-within is the ONLY way. "All good things in all good time"...is a funny phrase to use here, bc we are talking about "some thing, no thing" outside of "time", yet one can understand, that discipleship, studying with a Guru, and "ripening", might require said "time". Godspeed to us all! :)
PS: Sorry to go on-and-on, but I also want to say, when I am with my family, and we are simply BEING together, with no agenda, no outward "doing" or have-to's, etc. etc. I do get "bubbly" and feel naturally happy. Yet that time is so rare and short-lived, b/c the "doing" comes-back-in-force, and we find ourselves scattered and that "natural abiding PEACE" become shattered a bit. Mind you, I can/do have such "natural peace" too, often by myself (or should I say, more-often by myself), when I'm not "engaged with the outside world" or troubled with some task or seeming have-to-do's. I know it's there...that "flame of happiness and well-being", but I don't get to experience it enough, b/c of the "doing" that always and eventually comes calling. I say this, just to say, that there are aspects of Advaita Vendata, that I "know to be the Truth" experientially . I have always tried to craft my life, to lend itself to such "contemplative awareness",...but it's a process and art I'm still mastering.

  • @MrDoctorCosmo

That was a GREAT last comment... as, this teaching is "the right stuff" and actually made me yearn for more sleep where the Self truly reigns Supreme. Glad I found these ideas and expressions of higher understanding... since "he who knows does not know." Better to deal with "What Is" instead of rotating on the illusion... of waking, dreaming, and dreamless sleep... as simply witnessed by "The Which Of Which There Is No Which-er..." in the fourth state, or the Turiya state. I've heard it said that one cannot even get a taste for the higher without giving up the lower; just as one cannot give up the lower without getting a taste of the Higher. But, of course, meditation, diet, spiritual (and regular) hygiene, all good. The main thing is "yearning" for discrimination... between the real and the unreal. It's more of an understanding on a very deep level... mostly involving experience and maturity, according to Satya Dev, who became very realized at a very early age. As Satya Dev once told me, "If you can: eat moderately; sleep soundly; breathe sharply; and, understand deeply or profoundly... you're there; you're a yogi." I love that.

The Rug Veda is the oldest texts of Hinduism, I thought. So I looked it up, and yes, 1,200 to 1,500 yrs old. And the Upanishads expound on the Vedas.
Anyway the Ribhu gita says there is no "formed" or "formless". It's so great to have the experience then read about it later. It's like a movie screen. In a movie there might be a car crash or a flood or a fire. But when it's over, the screen is not bloody or wet or burned. Nothing really happens. I know very well I stopped thinking at least a couple times. I forgot there was an "I" altogether. It was so peaceful and safe and quiet. I didn't have words for it for years. No thoughts in that state.

As human we all aspire to know the secret of our evolution, of emergence of our consciousness which can pervade the infinitude of space and time (an essential quality of the intelligent designer). What are we doing with this quality? With this quality (that has no shape, color, ever awake and witnessing our every action) we are able to feel the ever present divine purpose that compliments what we are. This knowledge is the proof of the existence of the divine creator, a knowledge that evades those who fail to appreciate the marvels that bows our head in gratefulness.

Gratitude for the sparkling potency of simply being in timeless expression as it is. Something to relax by. Not one thing.

This is the best explanation of the three states of consciousness and Satcitananda I have ever heard. I've been reading the Upanishads and other Vedanta texts for years and Atma Chaitanya explained it well. A student of nondual Advaita Vedanta teachings would do well to listen to this talk over again - thank you, Ira. Om, shanti, shanti, shanti. Peace, peace, peace.

Enlightenment is so natural and easy to understand. We do not need such a man to teach us all these old knowledge. It is so old and proved itself useless. Just be truthful to yourself. And be loving caring and open hearted.

Any amount of talk or reading will not help unless one sits and meditate regularly no Truth (self) can be realized. He can only show the path but it is our responsibility. I practice Vipasana everyday two hours for the last ten years and it has helped me a lot.

Goodness.... profound.... wow!!! This is not a lecturer, it's not memorized information he's sharing... "from the point of the universe you're god. But from the point of view of absolute truth you're the only reality, one without a second."
