Also, i'm pretty sure he didn't breathe much in while driving as it heated up and fell off during the initial start and warmup test. Also, if you manage to get car exhaust *inside* your car while driving, a small amount of lead vapor is the least of your problems.

    • @thatguyalex2835

      Tungsten pistons would not do as well, naming wise, cos "Lead Pistons" would make a great name for a 1990s style indie/alternative rock band, or maybe "Tin Pistons". However, tungsten pistons would probably be more durable, as tungsten has a melting point of 3400C and is used in the durable alloy, tungsten carbide. :)

      I reckon, having watched it all, that #3 or #4 piston would make a great mould for a mega high compression piston made out of a sensible material.

    • @FuckGoogle502

      I actually predicted that just cranking it would start wearing out the pin bores and cause contact. You can see they immediately bent an intake valve, hence the combustion pressure coming out the carb on every cycle. Either I was right or they had bent valves already.

    You can always get a close enough timing without running the engine. Just line up the rotor with where it would be pointing to No. 1. Then line up the mark on the front pulley with the timing mark. Turn on the engine and slowly rotate the distributor until you see the points separate and create a tiny bit of spark. That will ensure the Lada will start and there won't be any guessing i.e. twisting the distributor trying to get it to start.

Add a brace to the inner ends of that tube. No need for any metal casting. These might actually have a chance of lasting for a reasonable time.

    Meanwhile in the US they are trying to remove lead from ammunition due to health and environmental crap. Garage 54 is melting, machining, and handling huge chunks with their bare hands. Real men.

    Future episode idea....
    I would like to see the oil from a 4 cycle engine replaced with mercury and then see how runs .
    Extra Toxic !
    It would rank with the likes of iridium headlights and imagine the cost of a gallon of mercury. sure some environmental group will be excited.
    Great video as always

    Make some hard cast pistons. I think you add zinc or something to turn soft lead into hard lead. Its something people that cast their own bullets do to make rounds that don't deform in the barrel.

    • @ludditeneaderthal
      @ludditeneaderthal 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Tin and antimony... zinc and lead don't play well together, even a few parts per million of zinc will destroy a lead casting alloy for use. About 2 percent tin and 13 percent antimony makes linotype metal, a reasonably "hard" (by lead alloy standards) alloy but still capable of casting very intricate detail, so very high castability

    If the top of the pistons were made of lead, you would never get compression issues. The lead would keep squashing into the bore and sealing it up.

    It reminds me of the fact that here in the UK we were still using leaded petrol in cars well into the 2000s (banned in 1999, but plenty suppliers still sold it, and is still available to an extent for "non-road use"), and allegedly there's still lead in the air around london which they blame on "old fumes still hanging around", totally nothing to do with the leaded aviation fuel still used at the airports down there in london... :P

    • @captainotto
      @captainotto 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That's in AVGAS/100LL not Jet-A/Kerosene. That's for piston aircraft which fly out of small GA airports which are almost all outside of the M25.

    • @twocvbloke
      @twocvbloke 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@captainotto They still fly over the place, and winds can carry the fumes in and around the general area, so quite easy to keep london from being fully "unleaded", not that it matters really, it's london, the world's money laundering centre... :P

      Babbitt isn’t self lubricating. .

    The weight from the pistons was putting extra drag then force on the valve train under running conditions, surging type force. Then them hitting would finish off all that noise. Is my guess.

    The original pistons have another shape, the head was some kind of indentation which have the replacement pistons not. So the valves probably have hit the pistons and cause some damage.

    you guys should try putting 3 or 4 radiators on to a car, the idea would be to basically cool the engine so much that it can't reach operting temperature, therfore the engine would run cold all the time, and see what happens.

    The fact that this nail gun even turned over with questionably precise pistons 5 times the weight of the original Design is a testament to Lada.
    I'm pretty sure the lead did heat up from the metal contact alone. Causing the easy deformation. Lead is soft as is, the low melting point does not help. The heft probably threw the chunk of cylinder against the valves then causing the imprint. Poor little engine.
