I used to have a new V-strom 1000 and now I have a 500F. Once I took a 500F for a good test in the twisties I realized that I had made a mistake. The 500F was MUCH easier and less stressful to ride and way more fun to ride at legal speeds than the Beast. It's the ease of handling that makes the bike really special. I also like the wide spread of power. In that regard it's a smaller bike that rides more like a big one. After 50 years of riding there is nothing I would rather have. Bridgestone BT31's improved steering and grip greatly over the Dunlops.

I have done a track day in my 2020 Honda CBR500R, it was easy to handle and worked like a dream. The suspension did not feel like it was bottoming out and I felt that the grip levels were more than enough. Over all my experience with that bike has been amazing, it is fast enough (more than enough to lose your license) and great for touring due to it's upright ish position. I highly recommend this bike for A2 license and as a starter bike.

N400 is more upright with clip ons above triple clamp. 500R looks like a bigger bike (especially with the 120 front and 160 rear tires). 500R seat is more comfortable although I spent $200 on Kawasaki extended seat (extra 1" of foam) which regained the lead. N400 is quicker and engine is way more fun to wind out. Not a fan of 500R low redline while N400 screams to 12k rpm. Heavier 500R more stable on highway. I was very impressed with the handling of the 500R. Headlights are better on the N400 for night riding. Both have LEDs but 500R doesn't seem as bright and projects mainly in front. N400 dispersed the light to the sides better. Fuel economy and range go to the 500R. I think I got low 60 mpg on N400 and get 72 mpg on 500R. I personally like the dash 1,000 times better on N400. Not only the design and how it lights up, but if you even look at the 500R dash, scratches will appear before your eyes. Beware, the more I tried to clean it, the worse it became...just don't touch it...blow the dust off or something. I like the transmission about the same on both bikes. Brakes are close I think, but would have to give the advantage to 500R. Exhaust on 500R sounds better during normal riding, but at redline, N400 gets the nod. Last but not least, the price of the N400. What a deal. Can't go wrong with either one being a first bike or commuter bike. Fun factor goes to N400 though.
@@vtecninja6363 If I could go back I would put some of that 3M clear protective film over the dash, the very softest, brand new microfiber cloth still leaves fine scratches on that plastic. I started my big bike journey on a CBR500R. Had it for 4 years a great little bike. Not the most exciting or best any anything it’s a great bike to live with.
I wish it could be slightly lighter so it could pull off 0-60 I. Like around 4 seconds it would have so much more potential but all in all a brilliant reliable bike
Unfortunately, due to the dumb A2 regulations, if the bike was any lighter they'd have to reduce the horsepower. Same reason why you won't get a Duke 390 putting out 47BHP
@@AAARREUUUGHHHH ik that but the potential is there I've heard Honda if every restriction is removed have the ability to surpass capabilities of some cc performance higher than that of a 650
@@duc1755 it’s not worth it I know a few people who spent a lot on upgrading the 500. You won’t get that much more out of it. Keep it close to stock as it is very reliable.
I have a cbr500r on an A2 licence it’s amazing - it’s nimble, comfortable, looks stunning and just a whole lot of fun. I ride in a group who all own 1000s and it’ll keep up in the Bends without a doubt
Great review Dan! I’m looking to get back into riding after being a non riding civilian for about ten years and I’m stuck between getting a ninja 300, ninja 400, r3, and this amazing bike. Ninja 300 with 0 miles on em are going for absolutely cheap at the dealer where I live. Has a 17 litre gas tank which I like. When I saw the ninja 400 I didn’t fall in love with it. R3 is a brilliant little (mini) superbike. So many choices these days for little cc bikes it’s hard to choose.
I watch all these reviews, and this is a good one per your usual work, as am thinking of putting an all rounder in the garage, but apart from that tasty new Aprilia middle-weight, I keep circling round to the Street Triple... seems up to scratch in every way...
I'm considering getting the 500F next year as a do it all bike and then something a little special for those 3 weekends per year that are warm and dry! :D Thanks for watching Joe.
I'm glad I could find a longer review of this bike! I live in Japan and here the CBR250rr is much more popular so most reviews are about that bike. Here we have the 400 instead of the 500 though.
@@AAARREUUUGHHHH We do have the rebel 500 but people just don't seem to buy them. I think the gap between the 400 and 500 is too small ( like 2HP maybe?) for it to make sense, especially with both the CBR650R and the 600RR on the market.
Seems like a light and nimble bike. I already have and R1 and Husqvarna 701 and this CBR should be a great complement when cruising around city or going to visits friends. What is the milage of this CBR?
IMHO the reason this bike is not very popular (especially in Asia) is because cbr 250rr sp qs. Many video on yt compare these 2 bikes in a drag test, it doesn't have a big gap of these bikes. And with a cheaper price you can get quickshifter, and riding mode, and have a sportier driving position, and etc. At cbr 250rr sp qs.
Hey Dan great video as always. Love your stuff. On the fence of getting this or the cbr650 this spring. Any thoughts? You love your bike eh. Cheers man.
Good looking bike. Honda styling department is getting their act together lately. These sub 500cc bikes are FUN and teach you how to really ride a bike, not just relying upon power and torque. If I were young again 😩 with one bike I think I'd go for a larger bike that could be made A2 compliant so the lifespan of the purchase would be longer.
Seriously. Between this, the neo cafe bikes and the new Fireblade, they're knocking it out the park. Not a fan of cruisers but even the Rebel looks great!
I am 19 and can't afford a bike for now. Hope that one day I can call the cb500r my own and ride the bike just thinking about my teenage days for a moment.
Does look good, tho for me the CB500F would be my choice of everyday bike. And nipping to Honda UK the F is quite cheap and looks better than I remembered. And that 17l tank - handy. Maybe if commuting ever becomes popular again I'll seriously look at it rather than return to rail travel.
I tell you what mate, you might end up a bit cold or a bit wet on some days, but I guarantee getting a train has never put a smile on your face. You'll get get where you're going faster and not to mention having options. Like in summer when you're finished for the weekend and go the long way home. It's the same tank on the CBR500R. I ride like a twat and get 62~ MPG, even on ride outs down country lanes.
Looks largely unchanged from the '15 or '16 facelift. I had a '14 500F. Nice bikes. Light and nimble. Comfortable for 4hr trips didn't go much further in one day 50+ mpg with 170lb 6' rider
I'm torn between yamaha r3 and cbr500. I think your comment on the throttle being snappy was the deal breaker for me. Hate that when pulling away from lights or need to slow ride.
Not my kid of bike. Not enough power and not a fan of super sport bikes but I do love the matte black and red. Looks delicious. P.s you should have more subs, great content.
It looks great and I've gotten to ride it. But despite the fact that it's a 500 its rather heavy. Like an insulting amount heavier. My own ninja 400 keeps up with it and actually passes on higher speeds because of its weight class
Yeah not the cheapest bike but A2 friendly and looks the business. I think it sells pretty well. MT07 is a hoot to ride but I'd say the 500 class from Honda has better suspension and build quality. Just from my own experiences with an MT07. Thanks for watching!
That is a very good looking bike. Honda seem to be getting their styling act together these days! These sub 500cc bikes are FUN and very good to learn how to really ride a bike, not relying on brute power and torque.
I try not to do bike training videos because I'm not a perfect rider myself. Plus time is the biggest issue I have. Ride safe and thanks for watching. :)
Maybe I can offer some help. I'm assuming you're mostly stalling from a stop. What I I would recommend is: 1. Hold you clutch in, left foot on the ground, right foot on the right peg. 2. Practise letting your clutch out millimeter by millimeter (1st gear). Don't let your clutch out completely. Try to build muscle memory on how much clutch you need to let out for the bike to just slightly start moving. This is called the friction zone. Once you're comfortable, add little more throttle. The more throttle you add the less you need to hold in clutch. When coming to a stop: 1. Pull in clutch 2. Roll off throttle 3. Apply rear brake 4. Pull your front brake in smooth and progressive manner.
Haha, bumps? In Afrika we only worry about the massive potholes and eroded road edges. Your roads look relatively superb. Nice bike, always liked the smaller ones.
I like the brownish color honda is using on the engines now. Everyone should at least ride a cbr. You owe it to yourself. The RR is a treat to rip around on. Is this the same 500 as the cb500x and cb500f? Those two bikes are fun and smooth.😊 Should be in a proper high suspension adv bike.
Desperately needs a tail tidy and a slip on exhaust. The GPR Furore not only looks great on it but sounds awesome. That pregnant thing it comes with needs to be pitched
Great in depth video as always Dan, I was thinking about the cbr500r for my first but how do you think it pairs up with the 2020 ninja 650? I know they different from each other but do you think the ninja is worth that little bit of extra cash?

I do not like how the dashboard is reflective, since there is a dashboard and a glass panel, which gets scratched and reflects, basically a very bad idea. It should be like monitors, which means they are non reflective unlike panels on laptop, which are. Meaning, even if I'd take a picture you wouldn't see urself in it, while on old panels like -PLASMA TVs you would, since they were covered with glass as a cover protection as well.

Definitely looking at getting one of these when I do my A2 license
*licence
All those 3 pretty neat little machines. I hope you went for the 500.
Nice vid mate do love the look of this bike
I watch all these reviews, and this is a good one per your usual work, as am thinking of putting an all rounder in the garage, but apart from that tasty new Aprilia middle-weight, I keep circling round to the Street Triple... seems up to scratch in every way...
I'm considering getting the 500F next year as a do it all bike and then something a little special for those 3 weekends per year that are warm and dry! :D Thanks for watching Joe.
@@Englishbikerdan Indeed, sir!
Gorgeous bike. The matt Black looks very good.
I saw in other review videos that the cbr500r doesn't has a gear indicator on the dashboard. But this one has.
It look so sharp 🔥.
Short riders have a great advantage on sports bikes , they never feel so much crouched as tall riders on long rides
I'll take any advantage I can get! :D
I'm glad I could find a longer review of this bike! I live in Japan and here the CBR250rr is much more popular so most reviews are about that bike. Here we have the 400 instead of the 500 though.
Yes, this bike is really aimed at the European market to fit with our licencing systems. Surprised it's not offered in Japan though
@@AAARREUUUGHHHH We do have the rebel 500 but people just don't seem to buy them. I think the gap between the 400 and 500 is too small ( like 2HP maybe?) for it to make sense, especially with both the CBR650R and the 600RR on the market.
one day... on day I'll have a bike like this!
You will
Well you can either get out and work hard for one, or be indebted to a loan company. Your choice.
A while back I was in your position, window shopping. Now I own one. Make a plan and put it in motion mate
I’ve got the 650R and love it.
Did you start out on the 650?
@@hakongjertsen1740 no, had 3 other bikes before this.
I really enjoy your review's, just wish they were longer ; )
Thanks Jim. Slightly longer one coming tomorrow 😊
Dream bike right now what a beauty
Excellent review. Thank you.
Cheers man.
Please thoughts on this
Good looking bike.
Ride again with sc project exhaust pliss that sound must be crazy i think 😂
Cool helmet matches the bike !
Cheers, yeah the colour scheme is lovely.
I have a soft spot for this bike.. *BUT*
It seems the common consensus is the Ninja 400 blows the CBR500 away in all aspects 😕😕😕
I wish I could comment. 😕
Still waiting on touring Germany part 2!
It's coming don't worry, just trying to fit the time in to re-edit.
Nice vid Dan.
It looks great and I've gotten to ride it. But despite the fact that it's a 500 its rather heavy. Like an insulting amount heavier. My own ninja 400 keeps up with it and actually passes on higher speeds because of its weight class
Yeah it's not a lightweight which is a shame. Those Ninja's are light!
Much better sounding this year. That price is almost the same as my mt07 lol
Yeah not the cheapest bike but A2 friendly and looks the business. I think it sells pretty well. MT07 is a hoot to ride but I'd say the 500 class from Honda has better suspension and build quality. Just from my own experiences with an MT07. Thanks for watching!
I have the 19 version cbr 500 considering upgrade to cbr650r
@@professionalcomplainerandf3006 that’s a decent upgrade. I had a 2014 CBR500R and now on a 2020 Cb650r
The cb650x concept looks cool and decent for touring hope ot makes into prduction
Love your content man 👍🏾
That is a very good looking bike. Honda seem to be getting their styling act together these days!
These sub 500cc bikes are FUN and very good to learn how to really ride a bike, not relying on brute power and torque.
Hey englishbikerdan, how about a vlog on some tips/how to?example, how to prevent stalling on a manual for beginners? What do you think? :).ride safe!
I try not to do bike training videos because I'm not a perfect rider myself. Plus time is the biggest issue I have. Ride safe and thanks for watching. :)
Maybe I can offer some help. I'm assuming you're mostly stalling from a stop.
What I I would recommend is:
When coming to a stop:
1. Pull in clutch
2. Roll off throttle
3. Apply rear brake
4. Pull your front brake in smooth and progressive manner.
@@shinobi_ryder thanks man! This for sure will be useful to all beginners like me!ride safe!

I just want a motorbike there is something about these bikes that makes me want too hit the road for several hours
I've been considering this or paying more for the 650 for a commuter. Funnily the insurance in London for the 500 is more expensive
I wonder if that's because more 500's get stolen? Either way, seems to make sense to go for the 650! :)
Same engine yeah, just slightly different bodywork and weights.
I'm 14 and I'm saving up for my own motorcycle should I get this one
Which would you say is a better all rounder this or the cb500x? I can’t decide which one would be better.
CB500X as a do it all machine.
Great review, just wondering where did the oncoming bus vanished at 15:35 :P
A glitch in the Matrix perhaps 😜
@@Englishbikerdan :D .. Love your reviews Dan (y)
Thanks Dan, you know it's a great bike when an experienced rider gives a yell when on those twisty's. :>)
Awesome review!
Judging from the Z650 I'd say the Ninja 650 would have a bit more torque. All depends what you want ultimately.
@@Englishbikerdan thanks for replying. I think I might go for the ninja, they both look awesome though. Your so lucky to be able to test all those amazing bikes. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
@@Dan_B_Rides the Ninja does have that little bit extra, particularly on the motorways (as well as that gorgeous TFT dash on the 2020 model) but as Dan points out, running costs for the CBR are a whole lot cheaper. I almost fell off my chair when I saw the difference in insurance premiums between the two machines!
@@philbennett8896 is it really that different in insurance? Il have to check it out. Thank you. The Honda does a have a good size tank and they are very economical. I think the ninja does about 140-160 miles to a tank
Dan, is it more comfortable and more suitable for touring than the cb650r? Thanks
Sweet bike and nice review, liked how you explained and broke things down clearly. I love the Honda's due to their durability and planted feeling. You throw Dunlop Q3 Plus tires and an Akropovic exhaust and your good to go.
The only thing that I do not like is the display. I prefer the old and good one. (you know which I mean, don't you?)
You mean the older yellow one? I guess it wasn't hard to see I just think it looked a bit like a Casio watch! :D
Would you recommend this as a second bike?
I currently have a cb300r and love the bike to bits but as a more permanent option without breaking the bank this bike seems to be great, this or the cb500f.
Both are great options to be honest. 500F has more comfort but the 500R is still pretty comfortable too.
@@Englishbikerdan I appreciate the insight; 500f seems like a more natural progression with the whole naked theme.
How would you compare it to the 650r? Any reason one would get this over the 650r apart from it being a bit cheaper?
Looks a nice bike, i have the CB650R. Will you be able to get hold of a triumph trident?
Most definitely. I should be going to the launch in December depending on lockdown.
What bike is better for a beginner the duke 390 or the cbr500r in your opinion. So far I have only ridden the duke 390 and I absolutely love that thing, but I miss a bit more power/torque :D
Which of the Honda 500’s have the most upright seating position? I don’t like tucked
Nice bike. Top review.
I like this guy, I'm certainly subscribing. I am getting a 2020 Honda cbr500r as my first bike, I'm so excited. After this review I can't wait to get it.
Thank you! 🙏👍
How much is fuel conscumtion in city riding and also highway ?please tell me
Whaaaat!? It is more expensive in your country? That same model is only 350,000.00 Php in my local dealerships... and that is considered a big bike category (expressway legal).
Are you riding around Berkshire /Hampshire near Tadley /reading area?
Would you recommend this bike for a mix of suburban and highway riding? Love vid
I have a 2015 and would say absolutely yes
