- We always have discussions about past NBA Legends and how successful they'd be in today's NBA. Here's some former and current players giving their take on how dominant MJ would be today. Hope you enjoy.

The reason MJ “only” averaged 30 ppg is because Phil Jackson asked him to score less for the sake of the team. Jordan averaged 37 ppg before he perfected his mid range.
As Mark Jackson said “In today’s game he would average whatever he wanted to average”

False. He averaged 30 ppg because he spent three years in his late 30's playing golf before he came back and spent two seasons averaging "only" 20 ppg when he was 40. Jordan averaged 31.5 as a Bull, which is WAY more than anyone else.
People underrated his passing but he was a shooting guard. The Bulls were a well oiled machine, Pippen would b interesting n this era
That year that Jordan averaged 37 was his and a few others best scoring season as well. Very little defense was being played in the 80's until Detroit and even they started out as an offensive team

we will always talk about his greatness. MJ is one of the few people in existence that even today is immediately recognized anywhere in the world. LeFlop can walk down the streets of LA and go unrecognized. Or people would mutter "is that LeCrybaby?"
He retired 19 years ago, so you need a math class. And people talk about Jordan in context to LeBron. Babe Ruth retired over 80 years ago and people talk about him still.

People also have to realize, part of Jordan's "super power" was his ability to elevate his play, there are players who have ceilings of skill level, Jordan had a way of pushing through. Best player of all time.

And in as physical a league as he played in, it would be much harder to deal with that than a double team in todays NBA; cause a double team against Jordan just gonna end up with a free trip to the free throw line

He scored 63 points against one of the greatest defensive teams of all time. Scored all over the teams that beat him up like the Pistons/Knicks. Plus in his first 5 years he dunked on everyone. 45-50 points a night today easy maybe more.

After The Last Dance aired, 2 years already now, I'm still stunned why people wonder why he's the GOAT ever. The level of competitiveness in him is like a lifestyle and not just a goal/life pursuit, it's a mindset that carries on through his life. And in the 90's, there's hand checking! Imagine him shooting them 3's so freely today! So it's crazy how he can be so maniacal about winning, because that's the only thing he thinks about all the time.

Many players today were INSPIRED by Jordan and that automatically created a bias towards Michael Jordan. The numbers do not lie though. And LBJ is better. That’s just what it is. It doesn’t matter what people say.

I'm so glad to see Mark Jackson saying what he said! I don't understand why people act like MJ was a liability as a 3-point shooter. It's nonsense. If you look at his career stats, there were seasons early on where he averaged LESS than 1.0 attempts per game beyond the arc, and his percentage was low, but as his career went on and he took more 3's and averaged 2-3 attempts per game, his percentage went UP towards 35-37% and even averaged .427% in the 95-96 season where he played ALL 82 games! As Mark said, "Michael Jeffrey Jordan would average whatever he wanted", and I wholeheartedly agree. Because MJ was ADAPTABLE. Whatever kind of game was needed to win, he could adapt to it, especially today's soft NBA.
People also don't realize that Jordan's way of playing in his later years was very efficient. No fancy dribbles. And that's the thing he can dream shake then fadeaway yo ass or cross you.
That one season he averaged 42 the 3 point line was shortened. But I definitely agree that if Jordan needed to shoot 3s to be competitive he would've done it and practiced until he was the best.

Michael was a pretty poor shooter away from the rim.. definitely not a 3 point threat..he was basically unstoppable as a young buck..but not able to lead a team by himself..he won his first ring at 27 or 28..he was beginning to get a well deserved rep as a ball hog and a coach killer..then the Bulls got Chief Wigwam as their coach, scottie, horace grant, dennis rodman, etc..the team jelled behind Jordan and his athletic ability was so spectacular that the others just got out of the way..but he wasn't a good outside shooter, not that I remember..oh, he would hit occasionally but not often..so this Jordan worship while deserved needs a little retrospection..he was protected by the league, so he drove knowing he would either score or score and get and 1..no wonder he averaged 30-35..shot 12-15 free throws..of course great defender and ball handler.. although a bit overrated on defense
Jordan has a career high of 69 but he also had 18 rebounds and 6 assists in that game.

Jordan took ALMOST the same number of shots during his wizards tenure as he did when he played for the Bulls and shot horribly from three point range, the fact that you think he is averaging 50 is laughable, especially considering that the man has TWICE said that he hated zones, I repeat, no once, but TWICE !!

Thank you these guys come on here hoping to change the facts that a majority of us witness for ourselves. And allot of us watched stop what we was doing at that time and went to watch tv to see him play on tv. Everyone was watching him do this in front of the world. In other words we all bare witness to his greatness. Then some of us passed it on through conversation and just sitting with each other and even in passing by people on the streets. It was a different time. We see the difference between games today to the very brutal and physically tough league back when they didn't call fouls as much as they do now. Good job, glad to see honest men on here.

Without doubt, the greatest of all time. LeBron has more physical tools but MJ was a different beast. The toughest mentality of any sportsman.
This had some of the best MJ clips. Not the ones everybody's seen, but the day in, day out shots that he made look easy. People don't understand his capability to score. Best ever and it's not close.

MJ alway said that shooting threes doesn’t work with his mentality, but a lot of people have to know that MJ wasn’t a bad 3’s shooter. It’s very simple, his game was on “ruthless agression” mode, and it’s mean, dunks, posters, fade away, mid range shooting, and dropping 30 pts, 40pts, 50 pts or even 60 pts, every single games. 10 times leading NBA score, 6 times MVP of the finals, the only player that have for six times 40 ppg in the playoffs…and you lnow what? There are a lot of more nubers with statistics about MJ. He is the GOAT by far, then comes the others.
agreed, in the 80's he was a bit below average in 3pt shooting and in the 90s a bit above. so not bad at all. i really dont get why people call lbj and kobe good/great 3pt shooters and mj bad when mj shoots just 2% lower at most than the other guys. i guess relative to the rest of his game that was probably his worst skill, but far from bad at it.

LeBron for the last 10-11 years of his career has shot 36% from 3 which is league average over that time, so he's not a good shooter but he's good enough for defenses to respect his shot. In his absolute prime he was an elite shooter thought, made 41% of his 3s in 2013

MJ didnt devote much time to this aspect of the game.The three-point shot was not important part of the game at the time. +in the 90s, the defense is much tougher. Tough and physical defense affects the accuracy and efficiency of the players.
Of course, if MJ played in the modern league, he would devote more time and energy to perfecting his three-point shooting. But i think that if MJ played in the modern league he would have dominated even without a three-point shot.

One point not made is today it’s acceptable to sit out games for preventative reasons. Jordan’s mindset would never allow him to do it but imagine if he took an extra 6-7 DNPs throughout the year to recover and push the pace. His average would be incredible.

How are you going to stop a guy with a killer fade away shot like Kevin Durant has, is 2 in taller than Durant, runs faster than Durant, and the stronger than Shaquille O'Neal? That man would get 50 a game without breaking the sweat today.

When you think about some of the greatest players of that era, and how many he denied from winning a title. Barkley, Stockton, Malone, Payton, Drexler, Ewing, Miller, Mourning, Johnson, and so on. The talent in that era was phenomenal overall, where every team had at least a pair of stars, some had multiple stars and couldn’t dethrone the bulls. Jordan was epic, and make no mistake, he would dominate in this era where defense doesn’t play the same role it once did.
Make no mistake, that bulls team was good, very good, they took the Knicks to seven in the eastern finals the first year of Jordans 2 year retirement, but Jordan elevated that team to elite.
This. The players of that Era are all insane. They would absolutely kill the NBA today, all of them.
Imagine John Stockton as guard, MJ as shooting guard, Drexler as small forward, Malone as forward and then David Robinson as center.
Then on the bench you have Barkley, bird, Miller, Hakeem, and Iverson.
Thats literally two USA Olympics dream teams right there.
And the dream team scored like 150 a night against about 50-60 scored against
Let's take a more cool headed approach to this thing.
MJ in 1986 -- 37.1 PPG, 5 Assist, 5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, and 3 steals per game.
12 free throw attempts per game, and 0.8 -- 3 point attempts per game.
When MJ took over 3 attempts per game from 3 pts range in 1996 he made 43% of them, and 37.5% the next season too.
He was also top 3 in Defensive player of the year consideration regularly, and responsible for tons of turnovers.
Let's say he was playing at 37 minutes per game today.....And with a focus on 3 point shots, his average makes would be around 40% from range. The shooting of 7 or 8 attempts per game would result in 3 makes per game minimum. This is also no counting the extra free throws he'd be getting from the BS fouls they call , and from being fouled during 3 pts attempts.
I'd say He'd get 35PPG (reduced minutes from 40 to 37) + 4 PPG (extra 3 pts attempts) + 5 PPG (extra free throws made) = 44 PPG.
And that's on like 36 or 37 minutes for load management. So people saying "40 easy " and even "45" are not exaggerating.
When is the last time you saw a shooting guard get 3 steals AND 1.5 blocks per game? That's some crazy turnovers generated. If you add in 4 more points per game generated off turnovers, and say that MJ gets at least one bucket for himself off fast breaks, that puts my estimation of his scoring to 46 PPG.
86-87 season, 85-86 he only played 18 games
The major flaw in your argument about his three-point shooting is that in 1995 through 97 the three-point line was 2 ft closer. Jordan did not have the same efficiency at the full distance

Steph Curry perfected the deep 3pt shot, and he's no MJ. Michael's abilities and work ethic surpass what Curry has. If Chucking 3's was the name of the game, MJ could average 45+ any time he wanted to.

In 1997 when they moved the 3-point line back father out, MJ's 3-point shooting percentage fell from about 40% down to .238. He's just not as good a shooter a couple feet further out. That extra distance IS a difference maker for him.. Says who? ...says his own stats.
You could theorize that he would have become a better long-distance 3-point shooter if he would have "practiced more" but he had every opportunity to do so. The three-point line was there his entire NBA career. He became as good of a 3-point shooter as he wanted to be.

Michael Jordan shoots above his head which takes more strength and reduces your ultimate range. Steph Curry shoots from his chest and shoulder area which is naturally a stronger Power Zone. It's why he can shoot from so far so easily.

When Jordan came into the league, everyone instantly knew he was the GOAT there was very little argument. He was something never before seen. In the present league, people still talk more about Jordan than anyone today. Will there ever be another player like Jordan? If and when it happens, everyone will shut up and watch history knowing whoever it is, is the best. That person is not in the league today.
This is 100% correct. There may be another Jordan at some point, but the undebatable fact is that that person has not happened to this very day.

As a person who saw Jordan come into their as a rookie and retire with the wizards, Jordan would easily put up at least 45 PPG in today's game, even without shooting 3's. The amount of no calls Jordan got because of how physical the game was and how hand checking was allowed, is too many to count on my hands and toes. In today's game hand checking is not allowed, slapping a person on the wrist is not allowed, heck you can't even play defense in today's game. In today's game you get called for defensive 3 seconds. In those days big men could just stay in the paint and all game long and knock Jordans ass on the floor and it was perfectly legal. No ejections, no fines, no flagrant, etc.
Jordan playing in a physical era, still averaged 38 and he has the most 60 point games in the playoffs. Let that sink in.

I never understood the whole ‘no hand-checking’ thing. Aren’t you allowed to put your forearm on the player’s lower back as you defend him? I think that’s allowed but obviously if you were allowed to keep just your hand on his back it would give the defender a lot more leverage.

Someone in the video made a great point. Jordan was able to average 37 points for many seasons just from the free throw line and shooting 2's. The era he played in, there was a lot of hand checking allowed, a lot more physical. With the trainer Jordan had, with the new training methods, Jordan would average 40-45 pts a season, if he stays healthy. Today's athletes are athletic but break just as fast as Mr.Glass from Unbreakable

Remember folks Harden best average was 36pts PPG. MJ best average 37.7ppg .Hardens era team scores are around 100-120 pts while MJ era team scores were around 75-95pts. Jordan can do everything Harden can do, most of it better, and is even more unguardable, and will get steals/blocks/FT's as well, which Harden doesn't do. Jordan averaged 37 while taking .8 3's per game and getting hacked to death.
I'd say averaging 50 isn't out of the question at all.

To say prime Jordan wouldn't have a season where he was at least _really close_ to 50 today is just not true.

I don't understand why there is this big questioning by the hosts over MJ being able to average 40+pts in today's game - this is the man who in his 3rd year (86/87) in the NBA playing all 82 games averaged 37.1ppg off of only 0.8 3pt attempts per game in an era where the big men camped out under the basket all game waiting for you and players would barely get called for fouls that today would see you automatically ejected from a game and additionally missing double digit games on top through suspension.
Add in the fact that when challenged MJ would purposefully go out of his way to prove a point like when they said he couldn't shoot 3s and he responded with Game 1 in the 92' Playoffs against Portland where he went 6 of 10 from downtown - yes he would average anything in the 40s today and I wouldn't put it past him if he was challenged to average 50pts. There were a total of 14 teams with a sub 0.500 record last season that would be easy pickings for him and even with the top teams they would be facing a prime MJ who was capable of averaging 43.7ppg (including back to back games of 49 & 63pts) in a 3 game Playoff series against the legendary 85/86 Celtics (you know the team that had 5 Hall of Fame players on it).
For reference, his aforementioned 86/87 season he racked up 2 games of 61pts, 6 games scoring between 50-59pts, 29 games scoring between 40-49pts, 30 games scoring between 30-39pts and 12 games scoring between 20-29pts. Pretty certain that had he not had 3 games that year where he scored just 17, 13 & 11pts respectively that 37.1ppg average would have been 40+ppg instead.
I honestly don't think this era would have posed much of a challenge to him. He'd score at will as nothing could be done about it and he had no weaknesses. On most nights he could get 50+ without even hitting 3s in this era if he challenged himself to. He'd probably have turned to baseball much sooner out of sheer boredom. Another one who'd make a mockery of this era is Wilt.

I never got in to basketball, but I did get into Michael Jordan, even a football fan like me has the utmost respect when it comes to Jordan, he was that freaking good, my brother used to watch basketball and watching Jordan was the only time it was fun to watch for me.

From a skills trainers' perspective, a lot of them imagine the same things but what they don't consider is that Jordan wasn't going to the lane looking for calls wasn't trying to get to the line. He got to the line cuz he was penetrating with what we call today bad intentions.
I see a lot of players that go in looking for the foul call, miss the shot AND not get the call. Jordan went for the shot. If he gets the call, And-1. If not, he still scored. You can leave it up to the ref or get that bucket. 2 is better than none.

MJ average 37.1 points per game in 1986 that is his second full-year right after he broke his leg in 1985 and it pretty much went down from there. He averaged 30.1 points per game for his career fun facts.I still have every game stub I went to see him play and yes he would probably be averaging 50 a game today if not more they just wouldn't be able to stop him.
