Beautiful. I really enjoy your videos. Informative, good instructional narration, no gimicky unnecessary background music, etc.. Can't wait to see what you do next. Great job, thanks.
How amazing both stones turned out, truly pieces of art. I’m gobsmacked you are self taught and only been cutting for 4 years. You truly have a natural talent for it. I’m looking forward to the pear shape and rectangle ones. 🥰👍❤
Gem cutting is such a cool mix of math, precision tools and creativity. Personally I get a bit paralysed when it comes to worrying about doing a bad job and 'wasting' time and materials. And that's with cheap stuff like painting minis! Gem cutting might not be for me but I love watching videos. Thanks.
Excellent work! This was a lot of fun to watch and I love your idea of the comparison to a door knob: We had a door knob faced with a round cut quartz maybe thirty years ago. Thanks for sharing your work.
You’re absolutely amazing at faceting gems. I loved them both. But to pick a favorite I would say the first one. But make no mistake they are both stunning.
Have you ever cut benitoite? I have a decent sized piece and was looking for a local lapidary, but it's such a rare stone I thought it would make a cool video. I don't think there's any videos on TH-cam of it being faceted.
I have. I faceted a couple very little pieces about 2 years ago. It can come in a nice blue color, but it is a little on the softer side for gemstones. So pieces in jewelry should be handled with a little extra love to avoid scratching. You can email me a picture of the rough piece. maxfield.matthew@gmail.com
Thanks! I didn't have that as a part of this video, but I am thinking of going down and videoing the whole collection together with him when I finish the last piece. I like a good break between faceting massive stones, so it will likely be later into next year when I finish the 5th.
I honestly couldn't choose any one stone you do as they all just fascinate me! 😻 They're all beautiful and id love to see maybe a large opal 🤔🤗 even if it has no colour!! Hey from the UK 🇬🇧 🤗
Yeah, how the facets work together in the cut design is one part, the other is that a fine polish really makes a stone pop with that fine luster. Most commercial stones are not polished to this level.
I have a giant aquamarine of similar size (it's a faint color, however). Wish I had the cash to facet! Holy crap that's a big stone. It so good, people would think it's glass.
Stunning chair! Thanks for the tip! The finished stone is breathtaking. I think most people watching are wondering what a stone like that would retail for.
That is a nice cut you did for this piece. Really can’t wait to see what you decide to do for the pear shape cut. Do you do custom orders (outside of your Etsy shop)?
I can take custom orders outside of Etsy. I am trying to cut back a little on custom work as I haven't been able to facet very many of my own gemstones lately. My email is the best way to communicate work outside of Etsy. maxfield.matthew@gmail.com
I have one of those machines and you do awesome on it the chuck must annoy you cause i find them only good for smallish stones .i use a gemmaster for big stones like that much easier with the quick release height adjust
I haven't done an interpretation of the Arkenstone yet. I don't know what material I would use yet that would be a good representation for the colors and large enough. I was thinking synthetic rutile, but I don't think it come in large enough pieces. There is a design by Arya Akhavan called The Arkenstone of Thrain that has 1001 facets including the girdle facets.
I definitely need to do amethyst. I need to keep my eye out for a good sized piece when I go to the Tucson Gem Shows next year. I think doing a large one would be cool.
Love the channel! Awesome gems on your store too, very pretty! As to potential suggestions, I was wondering how would some classic cuts (Brilliant, Princess, Pincushion) compare in the light if they are made from the same clear material like quartz or something. Like if one cut is significantly sparklier in one light condition compared to another?
There are a lot of accessories that can be useful, but primarily you need: A faceting machine; at least a few grit laps like 180, 600, one somewhere from 1200-3000 and at least one polishing lap; polishing compounds like cerium oxide and 50-60k diamond powder or past, diamond usually needs an oil based lubricant (WD40 works); extra dops, adhesive or wax for doping; an oil lamp or heat source; jewelers loupe (I use 40X); calipers; a scale that measures accurately at small weights; you need a transfer jig, but machines usually come with one. I think that is all the basics.
This is very cool, but where could stone this size be used? For me it seems that it is only for display of abilities. Are there any cuts that make stone useful for chandeliers for example?
Stones this size are mainly just put in displays. Not quite this big, but I'm thinking of creating some staffs at some point that have a larger stone set in the top end of the staff.
Well I use an UltraTec faceting machine which runs about $5K new. Everything needed lap wise adds up into the hundreds fast. You need several grit sizes and possible 2 or more polish laps depending on the stone types you are cutting and what you use for polish. The thin topper laps are pretty cheap though, around $13 each. Calipers, jewelers loupes, and scales can be picked up for for fairly cheap. Polishing compounds aren't too expensive either. I can't say I have one favorite piece, I have finished a lot of amazing pieces. The large pieces are pretty cool, but I can't say there my favorite. I like the teal Montana sapphires when they come out clean with good brilliance. I had a bright orange spessartite garnet I really liked.
It doesn't feel very safe holding the piece at odd angles to try and remove material for the general shape of the pavilion, and there really wasn't anything significant to take from the edges while placed on it's flatter sides which risked cutting too far into where the girdle would be. If I had something that could hold the stone steady in the odd positions, the trimming could save some time.
I do offer faceting, though I am trying to reduce the amount of outside work I bring in. It is best to communicate any work through Etsy messages on my Etsy store or through my email: maxfield.matthew@gmail.com
I get the feeling you don't much like your faceting machine or your laps (even toppers) LOL. I'd be concerned of knocking my machine out of whack from working with such large gems. Never mind the torque on the Quill Assembly. Obviously, you are taking precautions to negate those potential issues. Regardless, your results are impressive. It is an amazing and beautiful Gem for sure. Nicely done. I think a Trim Saw would have saved you a fair bit of time and reduced the lap wear but you managed it. My only question is, What Polishing Lap were you using ? It looks like a "Darkside" from Gearloose but a hard to tell from the camera angle.
Yeah, those massive pieces are very hard on the machine even with holding the stone directly most of the time. I feel like it is loosing a lot of life with each of these big stones I do. That is a Darkside lap. It has been my favorite for polishing quartz.
Theres no real need to wory that much about silicosis according to the PhD (I'm working in a sand/gravel quarry) back in the days stone crushers where in a warehouse and a thick smog and few centimeters of fine dust covered everything, there it was a concern. More about other chemicals contained in various gems (Chrome, lead, arsenic, cadmium and sometimes traces of radio elements but so many others) keep it wet and clean splashes is the most important and easy you can do
That is a softer stone with perfect cleavage. It could be interesting though. The salmon color of it looks nice. Looks like the only facet grade specimens come from there in Canada.
@whatthefunction9140 people won't believe it's real because they read the title that said it's quartz. Or listened if they can't read. Even if he said it was diamond, no one would believe him anyway!
@whatthefunction9140 he's not trying to lie to people to make them believe it's a diamond you dope. That's why he said it's a quartz. He's telling you the truth, and that upsets you?

Beautiful. I really enjoy your videos. Informative, good instructional narration, no gimicky unnecessary background music, etc.. Can't wait to see what you do next. Great job, thanks.
Thanks, I appreciate all the feedback too! It really helps me for how I put my videos together.

Thank You!
Worthy of a museum display peice
Paul plans to have the pieces on display and eventually be a part of some sort of museum collection.

l am an old gold smith of 55 + years now🇺🇸 ......You do excellent work and thank you....
Thanks!
You’re absolutely amazing at faceting gems. I loved them both. But to pick a favorite I would say the first one. But make no mistake they are both stunning.
Great job. I look forward to what you do next.
Stunning, I like the old cuts and unusual cuts.
Have you ever cut benitoite? I have a decent sized piece and was looking for a local lapidary, but it's such a rare stone I thought it would make a cool video. I don't think there's any videos on TH-cam of it being faceted.

You're like the blacktail studio of gem cutting
Amazing! You do a great job of creating perfect facets. Very impressive.
Thank You!
Matt, I'm impressed. Personally I've never tackled anything of that size not to mention trying to get the rough. 🤣
That came out so beautiful. Can you please share with us also when you give it to the customer, so we get his thoughts again on this gem.
Thanks! I would like to facet a really big opal.
That was facet-nating! Subbed, beautiful work friend.
The finished result is sweet as F! Thank you Matt. Rock on.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Wow! The sparkle you get blows away all the diamond cuts I see in the stores.
The stone turned out absolutely amazing! Your videos are so fascinating.
Thanks Holly!
You create such exquisite specimens! Where does one source clear rough quartz?
Best wishes, Dr. Lauren
Brazil and Arkansas both produce a bunch of clear quartz. You can also get some from North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and northern Georgia
🤯😱💀!!! I'm screaming inside. That is extraordinarily gorgeous!!! I just need a ring setting for it. 😂 ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Okay, thanks for the suggestions.
Awesome! Im buying my first faceting machine tomorrow cant wait to do stuff like this myself
That's awesome! Good luck!
Really cool you cut that big stone. I have a 7,300-carat stone of citrine, but the cut is basic cut like custom cuts.
That is big! I would need a set up for bigger grinding wheels for something like that.
Here we go again!!
Yeah, nothing like a stone that takes over a week to facet!
Stunning chair! Thanks for the tip! The finished stone is breathtaking. I think most people watching are wondering what a stone like that would retail for.
That thing is huge! And looks so good. I don’t have any suggestions, maybe some topaz? But I look forward to anything that you chose to share with us
Thanks! I do plan to do a big topaz at some point.
oooo awesome, I found your channel though that large quartz and now we get another one!!!
Absolutely stunning!
Thanks!
I watch these videos sometimes, they're facetnating.😂😂😂 It's very interesting.
Bet when you bought your Lapidary Wheel, you never thought you would be cutting a stone that was too big for it.😄😄😄
Yeah. No, I didn't think that I would be faceting stones quite this big.
I usually have a bit of distaste for gemcutting, but the initial piece looked like broken glass anyway, so this result is quite stunning.
dont know how i found my way here but subbed, fantastic results m8.
Thanks!
I enjoyed this. You do beautiful work 👍
Thank you very much!
Great job! Let's see something tricky like a sphalerite or wulfenite.
Yeah, I haven't tried either of those yet. Very soft and sensitive stones, and sphalerite has perfect cleavage.
get out, your self learned that , god that impressives
Thanks!
2:43 It’s going to be a real grind 😂😂
Amazing work! Be cool to see a big piece of Amethyst done like this
For sure! I have some amethyst, but not this big. I'll have to keep an eye out for extra large pieces.
I haven't seen the round one's video yet, but this one is incredible.
Thanks!
Wow! Beautiful cut.
Thanks!
Amazing dude!
Thanks!
Wow, that was great. I love your videos - keep it up!!!
Thank you! Will do!
Nice work Matt! ~Fellow gem cutter!
I may do a large CZ at some point.
You got a sponsor already! That's amazing!
Yeah, thanks!
Brilliant
Very impressive! Beautiful.
Thanks!
That is a nice cut you did for this piece. Really can’t wait to see what you decide to do for the pear shape cut.

you should see if you can send some of the quartz glaze sludge to florian gadsby
Arkansas quartz is world class.
Have you done a stone interpretation of the Arkenstone of Thorin?
Nooooo...keep said door knob the same size!
I haven't done an interpretation of the Arkenstone yet. I don't know what material I would use yet that would be a good representation for the colors and large enough. I was thinking synthetic rutile, but I don't think it come in large enough pieces. There is a design by Arya Akhavan called The Arkenstone of Thrain that has 1001 facets including the girdle facets.
somebody get this man a bigger machine bruh
Wow I was surprised how taht turned put
Where did you get that splash guard, and great job on your stone.
It was 3D printed and sent to my by Dough @hedronrockworks
who has the D20 videos.
Fantastic, well done. Keep going, any amethysts?
I definitely need to do amethyst. I need to keep my eye out for a good sized piece when I go to the Tucson Gem Shows next year. I think doing a large one would be cool.
Fantastic work 👏 👍 😊
Thanks!
Awesome work large diamonds 😊😊😊
A large diamond would be cool, but I don't facet diamonds.
i need that chair thanks so much
Pretty impressive.
Thanks!

@MattsCornerofGemCutting thanks for the information!! Love the channel... you do great work!
Well done!

Non-gem cutter here: Hi Matt, wouldn't it be quicker and less wear on your discs if you rough cut some of those monsters on a saw?
It doesn't feel very safe holding the piece at odd angles to try and remove material for the general shape of the pavilion, and there really wasn't anything significant to take from the edges while placed on it's flatter sides which risked cutting too far into where the girdle would be. If I had something that could hold the stone steady in the odd positions, the trimming could save some time.
Very nice !
Wow! Just wow.
Thanks bro!
I missed the back story. Those look like material from Hiddenite, NC?
The piece is from Arkansas.
Facet a big sapphire!
Amazing man
Thanks!
Awesome video. I have a unique gem i would cut like this do you offer this to viewers?
I do offer faceting, though I am trying to reduce the amount of outside work I bring in. It is best to communicate any work through Etsy messages on my Etsy store or through my email: maxfield.matthew@gmail.com
Wow!! How much did u charge?
Not as much as I should have. If I take new commissions for anything this size in the future, it will be at least $5/carat.
I thought a lapidary was a Finnish milk producer
wow man
where do you get that extra tall splash guard? I would love to buy one for my setup.
It was 3D printed and sent to me from Doug @hedronrockworks who facets D20s.
I like this one better
Nice 👍
CZ is most interestig & looks so coll please?
I may do a large cz at some point.
My precious
Golem gives up the ring for a Silmaril.
Can you take another gem stone, maybe translucent amethyst and just make it a shiny cube?
That can be done. If I ever do a cube, I may just do it as a regular 6 sided dice.
I get the feeling you don't much like your faceting machine or your laps (even toppers) LOL. I'd be concerned of knocking my machine out of whack from working with such large gems. we got rare stone here in Quebec if you want me to look for something special
Where can I buy one of these and How Much $$ it would be ?
Would this be considered a “Radiant” cut?
Yes, Radiant is the name for rectangle or square brilliant cuts.
Nice
So what you’re saying is that there are people walking around outside with gems in their pocket, like in an RPG? Quest givers??
Yeah, if I have a quest, it is usually to acquire more gems. (:
Make yourself a TH-cam play button.
Not a bad idea. A cushion cut. Use frosted facets to make the play symbol pop.
I have 46 Italian women who want a ring made
Beautiful 😍 are you selling? 👌
No, the piece is not for sale. It is going into the clients collection.
how much is this stone ??
The stone isn't for sale. I'd say minimum it is worth at least $5/carat. With the nice cut and polish, maybe twice that.
is it worth cutting those for money, must become an expensive stone.
It could be worth it, but I wouldn't want to do stones this size on a regular basis.
serandite
That is a softer stone with perfect cleavage. It could be interesting though. The salmon color of it looks nice. Looks like the only facet grade specimens come from there in Canada.
No way that's a real diamond dude.
Did you even watch the first couple minutes of the video? He says it's quartz. And it says QUARTZ in the title. Learn to listen and read!
@JacobE-23 it's in the shape of a diamond 💎.
If you make that into a ring. People will not believe it's real.
@whatthefunction9140 people won't believe it's real because they read the title that said it's quartz. Or listened if they can't read. Even if he said it was diamond, no one would believe him anyway!
@JacobE-23 exactly, he should have made it way smaller if he wants people to believe it's a real diamond 💎 🤔
@whatthefunction9140 he's not trying to lie to people to make them believe it's a diamond you dope. That's why he said it's a quartz. He's telling you the truth, and that upsets you?
Do gemmologists need chemistry skills much?
Yes, chemistry skills are useful for gemstone identification and treatments.
