  • Hello Friends,
Recently I made a video showing how to fix dented filter rings, and this using a tool I made on a lathe, and it works like a charm. However, a subscriber pointed out that it would be nice to have an alternative when you don't have access to a lathe. So, here I show you what you can do using tools that you can access easily.
You can also use 3D printed parts, someone also told me he uses glue to make a small mold.

I had a question about the Nikkor 35mm 1.4 AI. I got one with a sticky aperture and I need to get access to it. But the only disassembly guides that I could find were for the pre-AI and the AI-S versions. Is the disassembly of the AI version the same as the pre-AI or more similar to the AI-S? Any help would be highly appreciated!

Hello, I've never done that specific repair on the AI because it is a rather uncommon lens. I've hold in my hands several Ais ones, repaired a few but the one featured in this video it is actually the 1st 35mm 1.4 Ai that I see physically, even the preAi are more common. Anyway, I think that after removing the front barrel as in this video, you can simply pull out the whole optical assembly which is the case in almost all the ai lenses. Then, you can maybe split the optical assembly at the level of the diaphragm (not really sure about that). I can take a look next week on my copy as I borrowed mime to a friend

@@diyextravaganza If you could take a look at how you disassemble the lens, I highly appreciate it! Also, (apologies if i missed it) does the front ring above the focusing ring just unscrew, or is there a set-screw that needs to be removed like on Pre-AI and AI-S?

@@shutterslap Hi, yes, I can take a look but not before 2 weeks, just write me a comment to remind me on that. Yes, there is a set screw (that I lost on mine, 😭) so be careful with that.

@@diyextravaganza I just wanted to inform you, I took a chance and took apart the lens. The construction is exactly the same as the Pre-AI. The only difference is that the set-screw (like you said) is behind the rubber focusing grip.

Last video you did on this I commented that I do just fine with the tool you keep bashing. I've fixed two more badly dented lenses since then. We’ll just have to agree to disagree on this.

I agree to disagree, how come you get dented lenses so often? I seldom get or see them online. Best.
