I literally stumbled on the last week and I love everything this community is offering! I just bought the game and can't wait to see if I can better i have been playing tetris 99 for the meantime
These tips definitely helped a lot. The biggest takeaway for me was the realization that you really don't have to work THAT hard post transition to maxout. It's great to know there's a lot more breathing room than what it seems.
I've started to take the psychological advice into account when I play and get a huge pace. I have a tendency to keep going full throttle and lose it altogether. Tonight I played a bit safer, but probably too safe when I saw my pace. However, I just set a new PB of 948,619. Keep up the great work!
One thing I really like about Classic Tetris is that there is no looming feeling if there will be support from the developers for a new game in the future. NES Tetris is like 30 years old and everyone in the community knows that THIS is the game to play. They don’t worry about there being a capable sequel in the future to keep their game alive like in every other competitive scene. That usually leads to splintering and toxicity within the community. They just get to play their game and focus more on their tournaments for years to come.
I started playing with pretty much no experience in January 2019 with the intention of maxing out before 2020 (I haven't gotten it yet, but so far I have a PB of around 620k). The one piece of advice I can give is that there is no time limit on getting that score. Don't get discouraged by people that do it in like 6 months (especially if you use das) because the majority of people take years to get it. It's a weirdly difficult achievement in gaming because it's so simple, yet the skill gap to actually get it is way bigger than is initially perceived. There's so much nuance and depth that cannot be explained in a 20 minute video that you can only get through practice.
I'd be happy with just 600k. I'd think I would nearly faint from a max out. Great information from Sharky as well, always enjoy both of you're content. Looking forward for more to come.
I'm starting to realize that the classic Tetris community is growing on me today in the same way that the speed running community grew on me around 4 years ago. I wouldn't have come to this realization without your videos, scout. There are no words I can use to express my thanks
Really nice presentation of maxouts and what it takes to get it. Personally, I think this is one of the best videos to learn how to actually get it. I always thought of getting 300k consistently in 19 starts helps you, but 450k by 100 lines in the same level works, too. Again, really nice video from you and Sharky!
The curve of improvement is getting steeper and steeper... and steeper as you're trying to boost your high score. The milestone score for me (as a DAS player) was reaching the first 600k, which finally happened after about a year of grinding. This score means you are getting consistent on 18 and can do 'something' on 19+. After that it took me about 2-3 months to reach my first 900k. Since that time I've been grinding a lot and thinking about giving up on getting my first maxout ever. Still haven't got it. Will I ever get it? I don't know... hopefully will be back with you when I finally succeed. It's so hard and the only thing that holds me now is the willpower. Just... don't give up and maybe... one day. Thank you for your video ;)
I just want to say that Scout is such a good interviewer. He comes to the conversation prepared, he asks questions that continue the conversation, and that tells a story, everything relates to the previous question, or takes you down a narrative around a core idea. His presence is noted, but not overbearing, and seems to make his guests feel comfortable. Just want to shout that out.
I'm glad you discussed what it takes to get a maxout in depth. Especially the psychological aspect of it, I think anyone that starts to play NES Tetris needs to learn that part. There were times where I get frustrated because I have not beaten my personal best. I realized that it would be best for me to take a break. Although, my break from Tetris involves speedrunning Dr. Mario. Everyone has there own way of taking a break from Tetris.
thanks to both scout and sharky for putting in so much effort to grow the classic tetris community. You both contribute so much to making the community what it is.
yo ggs Scout and Sharky!! Great collab and in all honesty i kinda need this right now lmao. Been stuck on 9 maxouts for over a month and feeling like I'm experiencing the same psychological issue that a lot of people have when they're about to get their first. Really great tips and breakdown, keep up the good work y'all!!
I got an 824k, then 850k a couple months back. I’ve lost motivation since then and stopped attempts. Seeing this video has kick started something for me, and I want to get my first max out by the end of this year!
15:00 You might want to explore whether simply participating in online streaming allows players to "turn off" the part(s) of their brain that had previously stood in the way of higher scores. How many aspirants achieve Max Outs for the first time while streaming? I'd say a surprising number. Think there's a correlation? I do. Guys like Joseph and Sharky can hold a running conversation (left brain) while playing an on-pace game (right brain), so perhaps the Zen of Tetris depends on distracting the Top Out portion of one's brain circuitry!!?
Here's some interesting things I researched. The theoretical earliest you could max out at would be level 22 with 170 lines cleared (not including push down points). The maximum theoretical score prior to the kill screen without push down points would be 1,490,400 points. (Displayed E90,400 on the scoreboard). Since the highest score is 1,357,248 as of 2020, it's going to be even tougher to claw that 133,000 off, let alone the luck needed to pull that off!
Thanks for the informative video! I really appreciate highlighting the psychological factor that plays into getting a maxout. I don't really play nes tetris that much (maybe once or twice a month) so every time I sat down to get a maxout, I would get 1.1 or 1.2 pace, only to throw it away at 900k on level 25 lol. Today I sat down and threw away the 1.1/1.2 pace and safely got my first maxout! :)
I definitely understand the idea of not changing your stacking when you switch from DAS to hypertap. A lot of time I always think that I can survive higher than I actually can when I try to perform hypertap but actually I can’t even tap constantly at 12-13hz lol, and I can’t react so fast when I see the next piece so I always mess up at 19 speed🤦♂️
Keep up the good work! I have an idea: have you tried composing a piece based on a game of tetris? Say assign a note to each block that appears and make something out of them. Like what you did with pi. :D
As not a native english speaker - it was very useful that Terry Purcell shouted "I'm so exited" so I really understood that he was. Great vid as always!! The quality is boarderlining criminal high.
I finally got my first maxout after 5 years of playing. Always played on my phone then tried keyboard just this year. Safe to say, I got extremely lucky and it was also at a funny day, April 1st.
Currently 200 people have a maxout, but between them, they probably have a total of upwards of 10.000 maxouts. Like Harry said, once you can get the pace, you can get them quite consistently.
15:09 this is what made me so sad to see jonas lose in 2018. knowing now that if he’d still played safe he could’ve won a game and maybe even the championship
35yrs old, just got a 350k from lvl 8 start. Topped out on lvl 17. DAS only. Maybe one day, but my timing is not what it used to be. I was really surprised to have lasted almost 20 lines on 18 speed... Lol, yay for me.
Sharky is one of my favorite players. It was fantastic to see him in a video here! By the way, I've always been a little confused about the "quick tap". Perhaps someone could post a more technical examination of this technique , with slow-motion analysis, and an explanation of exactly when the quick tap happens. Or if that's already been explained in a video, a link to that video. Thanks!
I explain it in a little more detail in the 19-5 video. At some point I will probably make an exhaustively complete video on DAS that talks about it at a game mechanics level, but it will be a lot of work. Basically, with fully loaded DAS, the pieces will move to the side one column after 1 frame, and then one column for every 6 frames afterwards. A quick tap is when you lift up your finger and tap a second time right before the final column you want to get to, and take advantage of the first side movement being 1 frame. If you time it perfectly, the final movement will only take 2 frames. You can look at the animation in the video for a demonstration.
I wonder what is the *hardest* way to get a maxout and the hardest maxout ever achieved? And im not talking only about a killscreen maxout, but something like left well only maxout (someone did it if i remember correctly) or high input delay maxout emulator maxout etc
Harry did left well only in 2009. Plenty of people have emu maxes and LCD maxes (me included) maxouts from every level. Maxout with only one button presses.
What's the best way to be able to play on higher speeds? I can't consistently play on 15 without topping out quickly, alot of the time I wait half the falling time before making my decision which makes me misdrop alot, and not have enough time for the next piece. I can't really hypertap because im an emulator keyboard player rn.
So for you, you need to work on making decisions quicker. It seems like you struggle with being decisive on your placements leading you to fall behind on the decisions related to the piece in the next box. Best way to get better at this is to do both play more and watch more Tetris to see stacking patterns that can be integrated into your play up to a point where it becomes sub-conscience stacking. I used to play tetris, but reacting to which piece it was that appeared at the top, then figuring out where to place it... lead to mistakes at higher speeds. I realised there is a small preview-window, which shows the next piece, but looking at that and then moving my focus back to and reacting on the board.. i was just too slow. Dunno if there is a good tutorial on how to use it. It kinda seem essencial to master, the preview-window... make or break.
Yeah i know for a lot of people its a huge barrier. But once that barrier is broken (and much less shattered once you have like 10-15 maxes) it becomes a lot easier to score 1.0-1.1
@@ITZsharky1 Yes, my second one was a 648k transition from 18 and a 1.148k at 29, just two days later. Jumping that barrier is a great relief for nerves!
One last question Does playing on Nes on a Cwt really make fhe difference? I play on emulator and I'm Italian, so it's pretty hard for me to find an ntsc console and cartridge
Mainly makes a difference if you are DAS. A crt will have 0 input latency while anything else can have 6 8 10 or more frames of latency. This really has an impact on lv 18 and especially lv 19+ play
@@ITZsharky1 So I'll probably get a small cwt to connect to the pc Btw man what you've done for the community is awesome, been watching your streams a lot recently, keep it up and thank you so much
You can buy a clone console very cheaply (around 30 euros), which will play the same as a real console. Just the game sounds may be a little different. Plus, almost every European CRT will play NTSC in black and white, which is actually not harder than playing in colour, and still much better than playing on emulator. NTSC cart will also only cost you around 10 euros. Definitely worth it in my opinion
11:28 bruh from Jake lol, that kid is one of the most exciting and risky tetris player to watch, kinda ironic, but he is definitely correct, just doesn't fit his style lol

It's unclear when the first maxout truly was. The first claim was in 1990, the first picture is from 1996, and the first video is from 2005. Did you take any photos or videos of your earlier maxouts? You could potentially have the earliest proof ever!

Technically getting exactly 999999 points is harder than getting 100001
Might try to get a maxout this month on emulator.
Sigh. Same
Sigh. Same
Sigh. Same
Got it.
I remember.
Now instead of 999999 as a high score, some have letters from the alphabet as numbers.
Like A=10 for example.
I like that way of score.
omg it's Sharky I'm his biggest fan
Really? You should stop by one of my streams on twitch and say hi!
@@ITZsharky1 I do! I'm JimothyJimothy, I try to stop by when I can
😅 @Expired Toenail Yeah the name totally threw me off LOL
*I have a question, can you use game genie on NES emulator* (the red one that Scout have)
I'm at ~880K right now.... i can smell the MaxOut in the distance :-D ... on one of these days.
Have you got it yet?
@@AkAtu_ sadly not, but LV 19 consistency has increased
@@DreckbobBratpfanne Well, hope you will get there soon😊
@@AkAtu_ thanks
I got two tetrises on level 9 once that's pretty good right
Hit my first two maxes this week. W
I'm curious about the maxout list you showed in the video. Can you link it?
There is a comment somewhere that has the link to the maxout list
I've found the link. Here you are: bit.ly/NESMaxouts
I want a video with harry hong btw amazing video
I already knew me and sharky have the same mouse (as he recommended it to me) but it's weird this is the first time I've seen him with it
its 64 in 2020 now lets go
One last question
Does playing on Nes on a Cwt really make fhe difference?
I play on emulator and I'm Italian, so it's pretty hard for me to find an ntsc console and cartridge
Mainly makes a difference if you are DAS. A crt will have 0 input latency while anything else can have 6 8 10 or more frames of latency. This really has an impact on lv 18 and especially lv 19+ play
@@ITZsharky1 So I'll probably get a small cwt to connect to the pc
Btw man what you've done for the community is awesome, been watching your streams a lot recently, keep it up and thank you so much
You can buy a clone console very cheaply (around 30 euros), which will play the same as a real console. Just the game sounds may be a little different. Plus, almost every European CRT will play NTSC in black and white, which is actually not harder than playing in colour, and still much better than playing on emulator. NTSC cart will also only cost you around 10 euros. Definitely worth it in my opinion
7:09 sup eric, freddie, jake
Would starting on level 19 make getting a max easier if your good at 19?

PogU
Very inspiring
Buckwheat got good quick
It’s all about the ufo’s !! Lol

Before I watch the video, let me tell you it's really tough
992k pb :(
You get eventually 😁
11:28 bruh from Jake lol, that kid is one of the most exciting and risky tetris player to watch, kinda ironic, but he is definitely correct, just doesn't fit his style lol
People think Jake is playing Tetris, but really he's making videos for MBL scouts. His throws are epic
Sharky’s hair looks insane I love it.
I love how everybody just stops at 29. Doesn't even bother
Oh I like doing spins alright, all kinds of spins, it's even in my name SuperVinlin
When was the first max out ? Back then I didn’t think there were serious players having championship’s , I might of been in the top players in the world!! Lol I maxed out every day had a few games with almost all Tetris’s tell 190
It's unclear when the first maxout truly was. The first claim was in 1990, the first picture is from 1996, and the first video is from 2005. Did you take any photos or videos of your earlier maxouts? You could potentially have the earliest proof ever!
@@aGameScout no I don’t , just loved playing!! Speed running through super mario , and kicking Tyson’s ass !! And eye watering Tetris marathon’s , we’re my fave
@@michaelnewman5625 that's awesome! Do you have anything at least written down about what you achieved in Tetris from the time? I'm sure the Tetris historians on the classic tetris monthly discord server would love to talk to you about your playing days from back then if you have a discord account.
@@aGameScout not really 228 is my max lines but I’ve had lots over 200 starting from the first level but pressing down the hole time and only going for Tetris’s I’ve had some epic burn downs tho from droughts of lines !! Great game
@@aGameScout this was 95-97 I was born in 1981
