    I have a 2005 115 - identical apart from the extra 2 cylinders.
Cylinders are immaculate. I have all new OEM water pump, springs thermostats etc.
Since forever, it gets hot at idle, and as soon as you increase throttle, you can see the temp drop and hold at approx 85 degrees C.
Is it a feature of these engines to run hotter at idle to prevent spark plug fowling or something? If you still have this, does/did yours do the same? If I put a very small hole in the thermostat I can get them to regulate at 85 all day long. But why!?
I want this to operate like OEM intended. But no one can tell me if it’s supposed to get hot (110 degrees C head temps at idle before thermostats finally open at low rpm).

Hotter at idle is normal. My temp gauge will drop when running as well. I think it’s just due to water flow at higher rpm vs the thermostats not opening. Hope that helps!

I've got a newer (2004) Johnson/Evinrude 150 2-stroke. Does the cooling system have a filter that also needs replacing? Is it apart of the impeller/water pump assembly?

No. Only a screen intake on the lower unit and fins on the impeller housing. It’s designed to pump quite a bit of sand and trash through it.

Replacing my thermostats. How tight should I tighten the plastic thermostat covers?

1/2 turn to full past hand tight. The cap should be fully seated against the housing. What you’re basically doing past hand tight is closing the gap created by the O-ring.

Is this motor similar to the 92’ Evinrude 175 Intruder?

I’m not sure. I think that’s a looper which is different.

Just dropped the foot on a Johnson 90 thinking the water pump was bad but it looks to be in good shape beside some scaring in the case the motor will pee when idled up think the thermostat is the problem

    • @bobbygfl

You could always run it without the thermostat and see if that helps
