Stu ..Thanks to your videos a 25yr old issue is resolved. Pulled off the primer solenoid and found a worm of gasket material plugging the fuel inlet side of the primer. Cold starts are no longer an issue.
Stu, you are a legend!! That little red part is cracked on my engine and leaking fuel when choked. I was wondering what it does and how to fix it! You've answered everything and given me the part no., thanks again I will order the part from your link.
Thanks Stu. I just did this fix on my 1992 Johnson 70 which seems to be a great engine. I was able to simply unscrew and reuse the top, leaving the two hoses on the small barbs attached so as to not risk breaking them. Slid the new diaphragm in place and my "choke" works perfectly now. Wouldn't have know what to do without you. Thanks so much! Think I'll get some Dangar merch. with the money I saved.

I may be 5 years late but thank you so much for this video! I just recently have been getting into my old 1990 Johnson 115 and I was passively wondering what the hell that part was and why it had a Schroeder valve and why there was no choke in the carburetor, and then this video showed up in my feed and answered all my questions.
Excellent video Stu. I have one of these on my evinrude 48 SPL. I love the Schrader valve feature. It makes winter fogging easy as pie. I had no idea that these primers were completely rebuildable. Since I haven’t ran my 48 in awhile, I’m going to be checking it over and doing maintenance and repairs in the spring. These johhnyrude (Johnson and evinrude lol) videos will be a big help!
My 25hp johnson was running like crap as well. Doing this asap to get back out on the water. Amazing how a quarter ounce plastic switch can make me lose sleep! Damn near sold my motor for parts like a damn fool!!!
I have never worked on an outboard before. I now have an Evenrude 115 that won't start. I did notice that gas was leaking from the primer solenoid so I will tackle that first. I have worked on Automobile engines and lawn care engines so have some experience. I wouldn't tackle this, but your videos makes me want to push forward. Thanks for your very detailed videos.
Last summer I had a flooding issue and I thought it was the carburetors, I live in the USA and I bought a new plastic portable fuel tank and it has a one way valve that won’t let air out so it swells up like a balloon and floods the carburetors. Just thought I would share this Incase someone else could be dealing with flooding issues. Thanks for the video looking forward to seeing the carburetors rebuild.
I just picked up a boat with a 30 horse Johnson that uses one of those. This was my first boat so I was unfamiliar with the setup. The guy I bough it off of had the primer in the start position and I didn’t know. Took the boat out the other day and caught the motor on fire. The genius used cable ties to hold the fuel line on, and the combination of that and being in the start condition caused the whole line to spray fuel by the pump. Luckily got the fire pit before there was damage. Definitely an interesting maiden voyage. Thanks for the info
I have been having big issues with starting... So had my carby cleaned and still issues... IMO you have just told me what my issue is... I am surprised my mechanic did not do this.. to eliminate a possible reason... It certainly is not a complicated job... Many thanks , will ask my mechanic to do this ...

Very well-done video. Straight forward, covers the details, nice job. I especially appreciate the "hand behind the small stuff" to get the camera to focus correctly on it (lots of people don't do that and we get blurry close-ups). I am having problems w an Evinrude 225 with what appears to be this exact same device and now have confidence I can go inspect this part adequately for proper operation. You don't mention the symptoms for a bad primer solenoid in this video as you do in most other parts videos. My Johnson 40 HP runs fine after priming but it loses syphon after a few minutes. I've bought a brand new fuel tank, I bought a brand new oil tank (all from Marineengine.com, thank you) rebuilt the carbs, rebuilt the VRO, bought a new OMC fuel line and primer bulb. I can't figure out why it stalls after 3 or 4 minutes, leaving the primer bulb almost dead empty?? It's a 1997 Johnson 40 Model J40TELEUC. Ideas welcome :) Love your videos, you've gotten me through more repairs than I'd care to mention. Thank You!
Thanks for the detailed description. I accidentally had this open and it was causing the motor to run too richly. I had always thought it was an off/on switch for the fuel.
Hey Stu, I'm reading in some forums where the primer is on the motors, that you should turn the key to the on postition and then push down for 8/10 seconds before starting. Unless you tell me different, gonna try this next time out, as cold starts are somewhat aggravating. After you get it warmed up, the motor is great (115hp 1998 Johnson). I mean it's a cold natured motor in summer also. And yes , I always make sure primer bulb is primed . Thanks Stu!!!
It's my understanding that these primers don't do much unless the engine cranking. They need the fuel pump to the operating to push fuel into the engine.

I'm going tomorrow and will try the procedure, I'm reading about in this forum (making sure bulb is pumped tight and holding key in , in the run position, for maybe 6 to 10 seconds) and see if it makes any difference , and I'll post back and let you know. Follow up. Yesterday I went fishing, made sure the bulb was primed tight, went to the ignition, put in run position , held the key pushed in for 10 seconds and the verdict was. No difference in doing that way. It didn't change anything and was exactly as you said,, needing the engine to turn over and the fuel pump to feed it fuel. My personal preference would be the old fashioned choke flaps without a solenoid, and using a cable to activate, so you could put choke in whatever position you wanted.... Thanks again , Stu!!!

Hi Stu, first of all good catch on the pin flying out. My primer on the merc is metal and still works good. With my work money I have been making decided to take the boat in today and have it dyno tested and tuned up. Will let you know what they find. He said in most cases they can get them running good but once in a while it needs to go in the lake. Three Rivers Marine is highly recommended in this area
Would love to do a video but Kurt won't be in till Monday for servicing and I'm still working till the end of April. I plan on doing videos soon after. Thank you for the great explanation. My motor is a 1996 Johnson 25hp two stroke and it only has one nipple on the plate of the solenoid. It looks like the other nipple broke off but there is not a hole there, just solid plastic...also only one outflow fuel line hooks up to it...Ever seen that?

I have a question; I purchased a boat with a 1989 Johnson 25 hp electric start, console boat. Where does the small lines from the bottom of the primer go to. I have the larger line going to fuel pump and one small line going to a t-fitting. Does one of the fittings get capped off? Thanks in advance for looking.
i have rebuilt that part on my 30 hp Johnson it's electric start and the other week i was wondering how i could choke it if i had to pull start it of course i can't push in the choke and do the rope wrap manual start so this makes sense as how to manually choke it. Thanks another great video.
Has anyone else seen issues with this Sierra kit? I installed the new kit & seems like the O-ring on the red valve is too small & I'm getting fuel squirting past o-ring like Stu described at time code 6:04. I doubled up with a 2nd o-ring & now its a very tight fit & doesn't leak. Calling it good for now & just wondering if others have seen this issue as well.
Great video. Thanks for posting. Now I know how to test my solenoid. I suspect mine may be bad because the motor is very hard starting. Once it's warm, stars like a charm. I'll update this. Well 2 days later, it's fixed. My motor had been hard starting for quite some time. It looks like the ignition switch was the culprit. It wasn't making a good contact anymore when you push it to choke it.Seeing as I didn't have a new ignition switch handy, I decided to install a separate switch for the ignition solenoid (I used a doorbell switch $5.00). It now starts great. THANK YOU.
I have a 98 ocean runner 175. tough cold start, smelling fuel. Once warm it starts 1 crank. I'll look into this before plugs. Changed fuel filters and ran seafoam already.
Great video as always. My solenoid passes the ohm test and works when connected to 12v battery. The power wire to the solenoid gets the same voltage when key is depressed. Yet when the primer is attached and secured it doesn’t work. I’ve tried improved ground already. Stumped.
Great very well explained Just getting ready to winterize outboard bought fogging oil along with line that screws onto the valve so to fog the motor i would have to turn the red knob up to the manual position to fog the motor???
This accidentally helped me with an issue in having today on my 30hp Evinrude. Runs on trolling speed and idle with the valve open but won’t stay running if it’s in run mode. You mentioned that probably being s carb issue so hopefully I can track that down

Hello, amazing videos and very informative, I also have a question on a 2000 90 hp Johnson When cold, the engine cranks easily and starts easily a turn key and it starts, It runs like a champ, We take it out for 20 min or so, then we cast net for bait.. this means low idle, forward and reverse, etc with NO problems. We then take her out for another 20-30 min ride to a fishing spot and shut the engine off. When it's time to leave, it will crank fine, sputter and die. I can hear the starter clicking and cranking but it won’t start; so after many and many times it actually comeback to normal, to just a key turn start motor with the only difference when sometimes I try to engage the throttle it turns off, so i have to start it again and accelerate it very slow into it actually break speed.However, it will usually die when you reduce or try to engage throttle to shift into gear. Then you go home test it and it runs perfectly fine, including the throttle ( neutral , reverse, and forward)
I have similar issues as you but mine does have difficult on cold start. Did you ever find a solution? I thought maybe to change this Primer Solenoid or rebuild it.
Hey Stu , very informative video great details thanks . My solenoid is bad the wires are dry rotted and 0 ohms . I’m have trouble finding a replacement. The large outlet on mine has o rings and plugs into something . I only have to 2 small hose . I can’t fine any that push into something. Can you point me in the direction? Thanks

Hi, thanks for the video! Big help! I had planned on injecting fogging oil through the service port but my Sta-Bil fogging oil container doesn't have a nozzle that adapts to a hose that can be threaded onto the Schrader valve portion of the service port. I am wondering if I can unscrew the Schrader valve and inject the fogging oil through the opening where the valve was. Of course afterwards screw the Schrader valve back into the service port. Also the cap doesn't easily unscrew so I wonder if it would hurt to hold onto the red directional arrow part of the service port to be able to break the cap loose. Your input on this is valued and appreciated!
Great video. have 1999 johnson j40pleea. hard to start ( need to use neutral throttle control). Once it starts, the idling is rough and the rpm fluctuates between 500 and 1k rpm but quickly falls below 500 and the motor stalls out. When we had the motor running last year, it would start and idle fine but it wouldnt go above about 4k rpm without bogging down. We sprayed carb cleaner in the carbs. Should we try to change the solenoid primer as well? Thanks for you help!
Great video ...as always, but can you show where the fuel lines go on from the solenoid? I have searched everywhere, bought the manual and still can’t find anywhere that shows the fuel lines from the solenoid to the carbs/block... or from the carbs to the intake etc... Pleeeease help!!!

Thanks David, it's interesting how often motor troubles can come down to simple things like the breather valve in the tanks or the primer bulb etc.

It sounds like either sucking air through a cracked fuel line or a close breather on the fuel tank meaning a vacuum is being created inside the tank.

Hey Stu, I'm reading in some forums where the primer is on the motors, that you should turn the key to the on postition and then push down for 8/10 seconds before starting. Unless you tell me different, gonna try this next time out, as cold starts are somewhat aggravating. After you get it warmed up, the motor is great (115hp 1998 Johnson). I mean it's a cold natured motor in summer also. And yes , I always make sure primer bulb is primed .

It's my understanding that these primers don't do much unless the engine cranking. They need the fuel pump to the operating to push fuel into the engine.
Ok. Thanks so much for the reply. I'm going tomorrow and will try the procedure, I'm reading about in this forum (making sure bulb is pumped tight and holding key in , in the run position, for maybe 6 to 10 seconds) and see if it makes any difference , and I'll post back and let you know.

Follow up. Yesterday I went fishing, made sure the bulb was primed tight, went to the ignition, put in run position , held the key pushed in for 10 seconds and the verdict was.
No difference in doing that way. It didn't change anything and was exactly as you said,, needing the engine to turn over and the fuel pump to feed it fuel. My personal preference would be the old fashioned choke flaps without a solenoid, and using a cable to activate, so you could put choke in whatever position you wanted....

Hi Stu, first of all good catch on the pin flying out. My primer on the merc is metal and still works good. With my work money I have been making decided to take the boat in today and have it dyno tested and tuned up. Will let you know what they find. He said in most cases they can get them running good but once in a while it needs to go in the lake. Three Rivers Marine is highly recommended in this area

Thank you for the great explanation. My motor is a 1996 Johnson 25hp two stroke and it only has one nipple on the plate of the solenoid. It looks like the other nipple broke off but there is not a hole there, just solid plastic...also only one outflow fuel line hooks up to it...Ever seen that?

I have a question; I purchased a boat with a 1989 Johnson 25 hp electric start, console boat. Where does the small lines from the bottom of the primer go to. I have the larger line going to fuel pump and one small line going to a t-fitting. Does one of the fittings get capped off? Thanks in advance for looking.

i have rebuilt that part on my 30 hp Johnson it's electric start and the other week i was wondering how i could choke it if i had to pull start it of course i can't push in the choke and do the rope wrap manual start so this makes sense as how to manually choke it. Thanks another great video.
Has anyone else seen issues with this Sierra kit? I installed the new kit & seems like the O-ring on the red valve is too small & I'm getting fuel squirting past o-ring like Stu described at time code 6:04. I doubled up with a 2nd o-ring & now its a very tight fit & doesn't leak. Calling it good for now & just wondering if others have seen this issue as well.

Thanks mate. There is quite a bit in those ignition switches with the lanyard cutoff as well. At least they are easy to change!

Well 2 days later, it's fixed. My motor had been hard starting for quite some time. It looks like the ignition switch was the culprit. It wasn't making a good contact anymore when you push it to choke it.Seeing as I didn't have a new ignition switch handy, I decided to install a separate switch for the ignition solenoid (I used a doorbell switch $5.00). It now starts great. THANK YOU.
I have a 98 ocean runner 175. tough cold start, smelling fuel. Once warm it starts 1 crank. I'll look into this before plugs. Changed fuel filters and ran seafoam already.
Great video as always. My solenoid passes the ohm test and works when connected to 12v battery. The power wire to the solenoid gets the same voltage when key is depressed. Yet when the primer is attached and secured it doesn’t work. I’ve tried improved ground already. Stumped.

Found problem with some corrosion in big plug connection under cowl. Cleaned the connections dialectric grease and solenoid works now.

so to fog the motor i would have to turn the red knob up to the manual position to fog the motor???

This accidentally helped me with an issue in having today on my 30hp Evinrude. Runs on trolling speed and idle with the valve open but won’t stay running if it’s in run mode. You mentioned that probably being s carb issue so hopefully I can track that down

Hello, amazing videos and very informative, I also have a question on a 2000 90 hp Johnson
When cold, the engine cranks easily and starts easily a turn key and it starts, It runs like a champ, We take it out for 20 min or so, then we cast net for bait.. this means low idle, forward and reverse, etc with NO problems. We then take her out for another 20-30 min ride to a fishing spot and shut the engine off. When it's time to leave, it will crank fine, sputter and die. I can hear the starter clicking and cranking but it won’t start; so after many and many times it actually comeback to normal, to just a key turn start motor with the only difference when sometimes I try to engage the throttle it turns off, so i have to start it again and accelerate it very slow into it actually break speed.However, it will usually die when you reduce or try to engage throttle to shift into gear. Then you go home test it and it runs perfectly fine, including the throttle ( neutral , reverse, and forward)
I have similar issues as you but mine does have difficult on cold start. Did you ever find a solution? I thought maybe to change this Primer Solenoid or rebuild it.
Hey Stu , very informative video great details thanks . My solenoid is bad the wires are dry rotted and 0 ohms . I’m have trouble finding a replacement. The large outlet on mine has o rings and plugs into something . I only have to 2 small hose . I can’t fine any that push into something. Can you point me in the direction? Thanks

Get a repair book for your model of engine and check all the wiring. Could be a fuse or some corrosion in the wires.

Hi, thanks for the video! Big help! I had planned on injecting fogging oil through the service port but my Sta-Bil fogging oil container doesn't have a nozzle that adapts to a hose that can be threaded onto the Schrader valve portion of the service port. I am wondering if I can unscrew the Schrader valve and inject the fogging oil through the opening where the valve was. Of course afterwards screw the Schrader valve back into the service port. Also the cap doesn't easily unscrew so I wonder if it would hurt to hold onto the red directional arrow part of the service port to be able to break the cap loose. Your input on this is valued and appreciated!
What direction should the valve be turned for running operation. Towards solenoid or away towards engine cover???
Great video. have 1999 johnson j40pleea. hard to start ( need to use neutral throttle control). Once it starts, the idling is rough and the rpm fluctuates between 500 and 1k rpm but quickly falls below 500 and the motor stalls out. When we had the motor running last year, it would start and idle fine but it wouldnt go above about 4k rpm without bogging down. We sprayed carb cleaner in the carbs. Should we try to change the solenoid primer as well? Thanks for you help!

Great video ...as always, but can you show where the fuel lines go on from the solenoid? I have searched everywhere, bought the manual and still can’t find anywhere that shows the fuel lines from the solenoid to the carbs/block... or from the carbs to the intake etc...
