@Burp Gun I mean... listen to it if you like it... I enjoy guitar in all forms... cello.... sax.... .piano.... heck, I really like a lot of instruments. theramen is not my thing and never will be regardless of how many times I listen to it. music is a personal choice man.....
"It shows that when you put your mind to it, you can really accomplish anything".......George McFly strikes me as the kind of person that would play the Theremin.
I am absolutely impressed - I know about Carolina Eyck and how extremely difficult it is to play the Theremin. To see you together with the professional player - amazing! And to see the outcome - totally impressed!
@@SlashProducts I have a Moog and I also just bought one from this source. Check it out. Really good minus the Moog price. www.soundslikeburns.com/index.html
Leon Theremin invented this using valves. Basically two oscillators, one for frequency and one for volume varied by hand capacitance depending how close your hands are to the antennas.
I can’t wait to show this video to my kid tomorrow, so cool! Been a musician for almost 30 years, that thing is so crazy. How about somewhere over the rainbow israel kamakawiwo'ole verson?
...WOW!!!!!! I WANT TO KNOW IF A "THEREMIN" WILL RESPOND TO ANY "METALLIC" OBJECTS, WITHIN PROXIMITY TO IT'S ANTENNA?!!!... COULD THIS BE USED TO "SWEEP" OVER TALL GRASS, TO FIND METAL OBJECTS?!!...
Thank you Nicole! I have been poorly playing theremin for years, and I am glad to see that you made more progress in one week than me in 4 years! hahahah! That gives me some hope maybe in 10 years I will be able to be as good! .... nope! No chance! hahahah! I just enjoy creating space harmony with my theremin.
I got my theremini a week ago, and I find it easier to play than keyboard, and that comes from someone who played on keyboards ever since she crawled around in diapers! I went guitar center and tested out a distortion pedal, which I've uploaded the video of on my channel, because I love blues, rock, and metal, yet am terrified of guitars. For me, theremin is more intuitive for me than even a keyboard. Having the the slides (glissando) helps me to establish which note to jump to, whereas on a keyboard, I'm limited to just the individual notes. It also feels more like the instrument is training me and guiding me where to go instead of the other way around. It feels more like a true connection to the instrument for me than any other I've tried. I am also much better at playing via ear than keys or strings, too. Ask me to play "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on a keyboard, I'd have no idea where to begin or what keys to press. Put a theremin in front of me and ask me to play that song, while I may be off key, I can mater it pretty fast I honestly like the sound of the quarter tones in your performances at the end of the video though. So many times I like things a little out of tune whereas most people find it grating to the ear.
This was the best introduction to the theremin I’ve seen. From unboxing to setting it up to learning how to get notes, setting the pitch and providing a professional to see how it’s done right. I noticed your mic stand didn’t fit in the beginning and then later it did. What did you do to fix that? Thank you so much. Vinny
Re-watched this video and there were some points that I did disagree with to an extent. Personally, I'd argue *for* using the tuner to train your musical ear (visual, not the pitch correction!) because that can give you a visual cue as to whether or not you have the note. It can tell you if you're a few quarter notes flat or sharp. I'd personally recommend to use the tuner for that purpose until you can recognize when you're off or not. I'd also argue the pitch correction *is* helpful for beginners learning the theremin, despite what some say. It can be useful for training the fingers, AKA the muscle memory for the correct note, but I would say to *not rely on it.* What' I'd recommend is if you're not confident, use the pitch correction at max until you get the positions memorized, then gradually turn down the pitch correction until you can play without it at all. Everyone learns differently, so these features are not entirely useless or unnecessary.
This is a Moog Theremini, not as hard to play as a real theremin, but it's still hard. The one you hear on Beach Boys' Good Vibrations is not a real theremin, but close enough. Check out YT channel for Dr Samuel Hoffman, the L.A. podiatrist who played an actual 1929 theremin on movie soundtracks in 1940's-50's. His playing on Capitol 78RPMs in late 1940's with Les Baxter is haunting, beautiful, sometimes whimsical. Peter Pringle is a modern theremin player who now owns Dr Hoffman's theremin & has several YT videos.
Me for almost the entire video: so theremin is to make sound effects, not actually music. Me at 15:10 : immediately starts to cry hearing that amazing instrument. 🥺
Hi Nicole. I loved your video. I was just searching for tutorials on the Theremin and found you. I set myself the challenge of learning the Theremin during the COVID-19 isolation period and, like you, find it really frustrating - although I am getting better! :-) I bought a Thermini as it is a good starting point. The hints you were given are really useful. My chosen first piece is the Pie Jesu from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem because it is completely diatonic in G, and I love the Requiem. Best wishes, and thanks.
Thanks for this video, I do have a Theremini but got so frustrated on how hard it was playing it. I will give it another try after so many years gathering dust. I admire your determination
I just learned about these today. OMG... awesome. Was checking vids to see if I should get one and yours convinced me I should. Looks like a fun addition to my collection of instruments. Thanks for the vid... very well done.
I did I did I did, that was so cute and ambitious. You finally got it after you start having fun with it now I want one and I’m not half as experienced with instruments as you are but I think I will have a Lotta fun with it
I'm looking forward to get a Theremin and I really enjoyed your video, done by a beginner, so as to to know and discover what was going to kill ma patience and myself 😂 Fortunately, thanks to you, still looking forward to buy it more than ever ! 🙌🏽 Thanks Nicole ! 💕
As a guitar player, I probably would turn 180 degrees the Theremin. Maybe you could try this way, because I saw you were so confident when doing the guitar playing.
What a great introduction and demonstration of playing theremin for the unsuspecting! I've been fascinated by this instrument for decades, though never took that step as they were always rather expensive for something that might reveal itself to be a frustrating dust collector! Now I'm a little bit inspired - once I've put some other projects behind me. Very cool series!
FemurDesign has an online Theremin, but attempts to play even the simplest of melodies can be quite frustrating. Lydia Kavina's demonstration of the Theremini gives one hope that one could play this (thankfully designed) beginner's Theremin. Still, it's amazing to hear Clara Rockmore's restrained performances of Saint-Saëns' 'The Swan' and Ravel's 'Habanera'.
Probably the greatest of the Theremin Masters is the young Carolina Eyke, she leaves Clara in the dust. She is the first and only one who figured out how to play it accurately, with a method similar but not the same as Clara, and with complete skill with her own devised method that is 100% accurate.
Nicole, if you haven't already discovered her, please direct your attention to Carolina Eyck of Germany. She is world renown, has played this strange instrument with symphony orchestras, and in short is amazing. She even has a system (that she created) and teaches....which I don't profess to understand, but certainly respect.
Ok, I'm a bit jaleous! hehehe! I would really love to try this instrument. Never seen one in front of me. Hopefully someday hehehe! Great serie @Nicole Milik (Jonathan from Quebec, Canada)
Ich liebe deine Lache!!! Sie ist so ansteckend. Deine Herangehensweise und dein Mut ist bewundernswert. Ich liebe diese kleine Serie so sehr. Es ist mit jedem Mal spannender. Mach weiter so!
traditional theremins don't have any display, so I'm sure you don't need it to play. though if you're unable to make use of the display you may as well buy a normal theremin.
My late cousin-in-law, of RCA, became involved and tamed the Theremin (w-o the LCD and such of the Theremini.) Yes, I of course got it to produce some coarse sounds. His name was Howard Mossman. hello ...nicole ..could you give me the mesure of your guitar strings exact (type of your guitar and high tension or low tension and the type of nylon for example clear nylon or carbon or rectified nylon ..) because i am beginner and i think i bought the wrog guitar because my hand not big and then it must buy small scall guitar ... and these days i brock my guitar string and when i go to buy new string i got a lot of things , so i couldn't choose the right ..thank you in advance
just ordered a Theramini this morning; will be going through the same steps to learn it soon :D (but without all the musical talent you obviously have :) )
Basically throwing up gang signs to make sounds
Who would know it could be so harmonic
Theremin was around before gang signs. Little did gangsters know they were actually making music with their hands :P
Nah. 👎
The theremin is such an interesting cool instrument!!!!! It requires such control.
Yes! So true!!!
This looks like an instrument from the future or from another galaxy.
100% agree!

Miroslav Koch bruh.

What a lovely comment! Thank youuuu ♥️

The theremin is one of the harder instruments to learn to play well. You were doing really well there at the end.
Leon Theremin invented this using valves. Basically two oscillators, one for frequency and one for volume varied by hand capacitance depending how close your hands are to the antennas.
