The video quality for this video is insane for someone with so few subscribers! I really can't wait to see you take off! Thanks for being my new theremin teacher!
Well I bought the Moog Theremini 2 weeks ago and love it . I found a Moog Etherwave standard like yours on line yesterday and should arrive this week. Music store said it's in mint condition and sounds fantastic. The stand is included . Can't wait to receive it. Love your video.
Fresh new owner of the Theremini - after insane amount of years for which I wrote letters to Santa... and here it is! Glad you described as the best, because I feel it is just a superb instrument with so many options in scales, sounds, roots, presets etc. - unlimited fun!
The Theremin is built exclusively in Asheville NC. Moog had chosen Asheville as it's main and only headquarters. I mention that because it's totally cool to have such an amazing instrument produced less than a hour from where I live. If you have never played a Theremin, get the Theremini first. Despite all the presets, it is very hard to play. You must have steady hands. I find I can best play Celtic songs, but I get frustrated trying to play anything else. However, it is a thousand times easier to play than a basic Theramin. Good luck and have fun!!!
I first got a Moog Theremini (which doesn't function correctly anymore), then an Etherwave Plus, and 2 years ago got a Subscope Voicematic (made in Germany to order) which since has become my "daily driver". A highly interesting developement is the D-Lev (kit), a digital theremin, but a really good one. The LostVolts (UK, Europe) and Burns (USA) theremins would be good as a first theremin on a lower budget, maybe less suited for gigging but good for learning and playing at home, maybe a little flimsy and less sturdy, but having quite a nice sound and as far as I've seen demonstrated playable as musical instrument, and not just usable for sound effects.
@@jpjay1584 personally I haven't had a chance to play one myself, but I see a growing number of professional thereminists playing a D-Lev, and the range of voices/timbres as well as the linearity sound and look excellent. A very promising project that has already come a long way and surpasses the Moog Claravox as far as I can judge.
5:26 that delay sounds incredible, separate thought I don't particularly like Moog, I only had a Moog werkstatt and the sound was too harsh, it lacks character just sort of found it unusable, I like Moog for bass idk🤔just how I feel
Stumbled upon your channel and have a question: Is there a Theremin with CV outputs for both antennas? I have a modular synthesizer, and I'm currently intrigued by the idea of using a Theremin as a controller for it. The sounds and effects of the Theremin itself don't matter much to me for now. To my knowledge, most Theremins only have a CV output for the pitch antenna.
I got one from wish for $35 Australian It works! But I haven't really been inspired I'm hoping learning a bit more about them. This series will help me
I have a medium sized poodle dog that when petted or squeezed lovingly produces similar sounds to a Theremin. Perhaps this is a better low cost option than the moog versions u are recommending here, at least for a beginner. Love ur vids and brand btw. Big fan.
lostvolts in the uk makes a much more affordable analog theremin. I haven't tried it yet but im hoping to get one soonish to compare to what ive got currently.
Nice video! Dont forget the ProxiMIDI by a company called "Copper and Cedar" ; not literally a theremin, but it is a theremin like midi controller for the midi curious !!!
Hi, Thanks for your very useful videos! I'm planning on buying a Theremin (most likely a Theremini thanks to your advice) but I feel that, as a left-handed person, I'll be more natural playing the pitch with my left hand and volume on the right hand. Are you aware of the existence of such a model?
@CarolineScruggs i have the same feeling as left handed person, i think for the theremini i found for a good price it should be easy turned but ok then my enviremented change so i have to calibrate the distance. have you founded one vianney ? and playing left handed or like me looking out. i was thinking building one because i'm in electronica but ok will not be the same like some here and the theremini has a build in amplifier so no pickup of strange signals in the sound
If you only want to try if Theremin is the instrument for you, you can get an OpenTheremin for less than 1/3 of the cost. Some DIY required I have an older version that you had to solder yourself and pair to an Arduino board. None of that is required anymore. The limited use sofar wouldn't have justified the cost of a Theremini. And because of the small form factor of the OpenTheremin it is (not) gathering dust in a drawer.
So we have all these pricey moog theremins. How does the open theremin fit into this list? I think it is the only one where antenna functions can be swapped to accommodate to personal capabilities, right?
Hey, Caroline Scruggs, Thank you for this nice video, your enthusiasm is amazing, keep it up. I'm facing an issue with my current old Standard Etherwave (which I own for 3 years now), and I might have to look at a replacement. Something in the mainboard seems dead or dying. I've also looked at the Theremini. I've heard it's hard / impossible to play quick notes on it. Is that true? Would you be able to tell me more? Please note I haven't looked at all your videos yet, I just now discovered them. If you detail something along this in another video, a pointer to the right one would be appreciated. The fact you find the Claravox not so fun to play was a surprise, by the way. (I don't know it from experience. Shows how personal a good theremin is.) Thank you again, and keep the videos as fun as they are now.
Hey Paul! Glad you stumbled across my videos, I hope they prove helpful to you. The theremini is my most recent addition to my theremins, and I truly was surprised at how much I love playing it. I haven't experienced what you mentioned of not being able to play quickly on it... it keeps up wonderfully, as long as my fingers are doing their job :) Really can't recommend it enough. You'll find links to that as well as my favorite gear throughout my videos. Hope this helps!
@@CarolineScruggs Thank you very much for your reply, I really appreciate it. At the moment, a friend is trying to find out what's wrong with the Etherwave (but it doesn't sound hopeful [grimace]). I'll certainly have a look and listen at the Theremini if this is curtain call for the good old Moog. Have a brilliant day!
Hi, do You know any other place to buy the ESPE01 bass module? When I try to buy it via the link You provided it says “Dit product is tot onze spijt op dit moment niet leverbaar. This product is currently not available. Our apologies for the inconvenience.” Best Regards, /peter j
Cons for the Theremini - Hideous cheap looking design. Place this in a nice wooden box like the Etherwave and charge me a few hundred dollars extra please Moog.
Crikey. Maybe just listen to her reviews while looking away and this should prevent seizures. An occasional glance at the screen to check out these interesting quirky devices should be harmless.
Sad little round man Can't create something himself So he criticizes the creations Of everybody else. 🐑💨 How's that for standing and taking normally ? ☺️
Awww It’s just her style and personality 😊 I love it! To just stand and talk is ok but this has flair and fun. Hope you find someone to do what you’re after.

This makes me so happy to hear, congrats on your new instrument! 🎉 Let me know if you ever need a virtual lesson.
@@CarolineScruggs Thank you! Not a bad idea! Maybe it would be useful. Where are you located? I'm in central Europe, Prague.
I do virtual lessons :) you can contact me on my website Carolinescruggs.com for details!
I've been wanting to learn this instrument for a while and decided to pick up a Theremini after watching this. It looks like a pretty good machine!
How have you found it to play? Are you able to play an actual song?
You would be the theremin Queen
You sold me on the theremini been looking at it for awhile now. It's finally time to start my theremin journey. Been waiting years 🎉❤
I’m so glad to hear this!! ❤

I bought a Claravox as a beginner... because honestly, it was the only Moog Theremin I could find online to buy.

There's a behringer theremin that's been rumored, I wish they'd get on with that already.
Love my theremini

Tbf long-term costs of a pet (food, vet, etc) are way highter of any musical instrument
Poodle is way more expensive 😂
What about the stylophone theremin? A bit different but very affordable.
