ohio shaves did the same comparison but reached the opposite conclusion regarding the effectiveness of the razors but he had 7 days of growth - very interesting. would love to see a comparison between yaqi se katana and leaf thorn (or parker solo edge), thanks.
@davidkuniov Interesting outcome. I don’t know who shaves every 7 days but seems the thorn did better with the longer growth. For me the Parker is more efficient for sure than the leaf. I don’t use the leaf thorn much because it don’t find it as efficient as I’d like. He also is using the heavier stainless steel thorn which should add to its efficiency a tad over the regular zamac thorn
Great comparison. I appreciate your unbiased approach in your reviews👍 I agree about the shave to shave differences. One day it’s like this is the best shave ever and then the next shave, keeping everything the same, it’s like “what”? Enjoy your videos
@alspencer2794 glad you are enjoying the content. Thank you for mentioning you note the same shaving phenomenon of same products yet different results sometimes. It’s reassuring others notice these things too.
A great comparison shave. But also we learnt a lot about both razors at the same time - and in fact the best reviews I’ve seen of each razor on its own. Many thanks!
@rayban-usa5482 the shield gem would crush the bullet tip no problem in efficiency. Better match up is the OC micromatic vs shield Gem. I don’t have shield SE. he said that’s the most mild of his offerings so I ordered the DE head. I know I know. Not SE but I’ll review it anyways just not against SE.
I have the Twig and the Thorn. Recently picked up the Parker and it's my new favorite. Love that razor. Finally found one that I really does it for me. I use Treet Platinum blades for a great result.
My Leaf Twig developed a dry squeak in the threads shortly after I bought it. I saw a tip from Leaf to say a drop of their pre shave oil into the recess in the bottom of the handle as a lubricant was what they recommended and having done that it has been perfect since.
Great Shave and review of the Thorn and SoloEdge. I agree the solo edge was the slightly better razor. Little more efficient and good weight. Enjoy the rest of your weekend
Great comparative shave John. If you have the single edge by Yaqi (which uses half de), do consider making a comparative success video against Parker solo edge.
@eggmaneggman9966 glad you enjoy the twig. I know a guy that uses his thorn almost exclusively he enjoys it so much. As long as we all find at least 1 razor we enjoy we are all winning.
I like my thorn but bought it more as a novelty and have come to appreciate it. I have no knowledge of Gem razors. What draws you to single edge razors ? Do they shave better , more comfortable ? Am willing to jump down that rabbit hole if you have compelling evidence. Thanks
@michaelhunyadi5087 single edge razor do seems to give me a longer lasting shave. I just enjoy having different options and varieties to choose from. If you like how the thorn feels you will probably also like a Gem. I just liked the retro art deco look the vintage gems razors have.
I think the difference in performance with all the same gear on different days would have to be either subtle differences in beard growth, atmospheric conditions, or both
Thank you for going in-depth on these two. You pointed out some great distinguishing factors to consider. I was wondering if you have ever used the PAA Ascension Twist to be able to compare it to the redesigned Parker Variant OC? Also, do you have any idea of any GEM style razors that have neutral exposure paired with decent efficiency?
@christopheratkinson635 I am glad you enjoyed all the details. I have not tried the PAA yet. It’s on my radar. 2 buddies love them. I am just picky with OC because I personally don’t like too much blade feel. Thus far yaqi zamac Melon OC for $9 on Ali express and 1932 vintage Gillette “new head” long tooth open comb are my favorite OC. Next would be the Parker for adjustable OC. Lower blade feels with high efficiency on all 3 The smoothest most efficient vintage Gem is the featherweight 1st generation. On the top cap of the gem there is the push tab u open the top cap with. If there is parallel lines on the top cap that’s 2nd generation and super mild. You want 1st generation which will be smooth on the top cap aka NO lines. If you are unsure sent pics to my channel name at gmail.com. They can be had for $10-$15 on eBay. If u hate the looks of the Bakelite handle on the featherweight next Gem would be the micromatic “clog pruf” 2nd generation in 1945. It has 17 nibs on closed comb safety bar. Gen 1 has 12 nibs and is rougher shaver. The OC micromatic is great but much more blade feel. Not as much as hyped but it’s no autopilot razor either.
@@Stubblemeetssteel that is a lot of good info. I am struggling with what to do because of how long it takes me to my chin and area due to shape and coarseness. I might order that inexpensive Zamac OC. My best experience is with Leaf OG but I have to be careful with that as well after the first pass not to give myself a fair amount of weepers. I think it is because of the erratic hair growth and coarseness. I feel like a better blade for me would be something not as wide across the blade. So even as I am writing this I lean toward OC or Slant. I might try an inexpensive milder GEM, but I feel it won't lend itself well to my goatee area problems. I wish my wife's face was less sensitive so that I could grow out a goatee and greatly reduce my struggles. Please feel free to redirect my thought process as I fluidly ramble. 😁
Awesome comparison video, thanks again... I had Leaf Twig but I didn't like it because it has unacceptable blade chattering on my standards, so I don't even buy a Thorn that might have the same issue. I love Permasharp blades too; it has enough sharpness almost for every razor. You mentioned that second or third use of Permasharp blade feels more fluent/smoother/sharper, I feel the same because as far as I know Permasharp is platinum coated and on second and third use because it lost its coting, it is getting smoother, not tugging like first use of teflon coated Voshkod blades(As you know, Voshkod blades have heavy teflon coats which really makes them a little bit tuggy on their first use.)
@canpo1907 you just have a very dense thick beard. Yet the lead razors don’t have any blade clamping. More just holding the blade in place. I could see it chattering with a dense beard. The thorn is pretty smooth but could be more efficient. The solo edge you would probably enjoy much more. While not suggested by Parker a few gents are using a trimmed injector blade in the Parker solo to crank up its efficiency even more.
The Twig Thorn razor is a remarkable single-edge razor that delivers an exceptionally close shave. One slight inconvenience is the screw-up and down opening mechanism. It may not be as durable as the Parker solo edge due to its standard safety edge connections, which require careful assembly. Nevertheless, the Parker solo edge might have a longer lifespan. Thank you for sharing this informative TH-cam video.
John manages to pack a huge amount of useful information into these videos in a short time and the comparisons are really fair-minded. Thanks!!

@okiedokie_cool I do have the new yaqi SE that uses half a DE blade. I’ll either do that head to head or the gem shield next. Thanks for watching.
I love my twig. Every day great shaves.

Hello, but personally... which one would you choose of the two? Thank you.
@frankshaves I like the leaf thorn better. It’s has less blade feel and I don’t feel I have to watch each stroke as much compared to the Parker solo
