Horl is actually a German brand that came out with the first version of this sharpener a few years ago, so good on you for getting the original one! It was founded by a father and son after the father had fiddled around with many prototypes for 30 years now (hence the 1993 on the logo) Tumbler (the American brand heavily advertising online) blatantly stole the idea and did not even make a good job of it. It's cheaper and definitely works but the Horl is miles better. I believe Horl has also taken legal action since the mechanisms are patented but I guess it's a slow process across the atlantic ocean...
From what I read, they are both fashioned after a patent that expired around 1966. The Horl needs be to be a lot better, for over $400. The Tumbler is 1/4 that. I cannot justify the difference for my knives.
You're comparing two different products. The "regular" horl sharpener is around 100€, so it's reasonably priced. The 400€ one you are talking about is a special edition with a gear box inside making the disc spin faster.
The secret sauce is keeping the blade at the angle in a consistent and easy way. It is easier than moving the knife (even with a angle holder) over a honing stone. Great idea, whoever came up with it. Make it a diamond stone with a stainless steel band and it'll last a lifetime.
If it's lasted a lifetime they need to charge a lot more for it... Why make/sell one really good item when you can make one that lasts just long enough and sell many more?
I think that's mostly true. Basically because the main thing is just to keep the right angle all the way through. That's what this does. There's a bit more to getting a really razory edge though, like properly deburring the edge.
Aint nobody got time for that. Do I ask the person assaulting me to take a fiver while I sharpen my force multiplier? No I just have a knife that keeps enough of an edge.

i have used allot of disk sharpeners they tend to work pretty well This is a good design honestly as most are motorized and you have to be very smooth with your draw motion or you will wreck the blade with the motor driven ones with this you stop it stops
I like the blade "holder" they supplied. As a knife sharpening novice it is really hard to keep the knife in the exact same position when sharpening, leading to poor results. This is such a simple and elegant solution compared to many of the expensive alternatives I've seen over the years.
Also also, they have a 3d print file to make your own Horl sharpener roller for cheap. Then you can put the Horl sharpener disks onto the 3d printed body.
I have the Horl pro sharpener with the extra sharpening discs and it’s amazing. I’ve used wet stones with varying degrees of success but with this set up sharpening is easier and faster even with my buddie’s cheap steel on his pocket knife that he’s had for 10 years
Not bad looking at all. I'd be willing to pay about $30 for it. But for consumable sharpening surfaces, I think wet/dry sandpaper on a hard surface is a lot more efficient and cost effective.
My dad just bought The Tumbler. Which is the exact same as this one at the end of the day. It made quick work of his knives and was pretty impressive. I just wish they'd make a smaller version for pocket knives. I still like my diamond stone though.
it's not the same. You can't change the discs on Tumbler and the guys from Horl (Austria) are giving him a case in court for stealing their patent. Tumbler is only sold in USA/CANADA due to that reason alone. He knows he has stolen intellectual property, the scumbag.
For kitchen knives, my wife effs them up too fast with drawer storage and cutting on plates to bother with stones. I dropped the $120 or whatever on a ChefsChoice, and can knock out all her knives in under 10 minutes. It doesn't make my inner knife geek happy, but it sure gets the chore done.
Not the exact same. The Tumbler only comes with a 2000 grit stone that's not interchangeable. Takes forever to sharpen a knife that doesn't already have a good edge. The honing steel side also isn't hard enough to properly work. The Horl 2 comes with a 450 grit and a 1000 grit side, and you can purchase 220, 3000, 6000, and 10k grits separately for proper sharpening. The Tumbler's magnets are also usually very poor, and it doesn't roll nearly as well.

I bought one of the original versions of these when I was a professional chef. I reckon it, plus a strop put an edge on that was very close to a proper whetstone sharpen.
There are lots of knife sharpening systems out there that will hold a constant angle against the edge. But this one by far does it with a far simpler bit of kit that doesn't require a tower and guide rods to be set up. This is so simple a grandma can pull it off in her kitchen. And it will get you a nice 'toothy' edge like you normally get with a flat stone. Toothy edges aren't show quality edges were you can see your reflection in the polished edge, but rather a performance edge that you can actually feel has some bite when it slices into something. 17 degrees is nice for slicing knives for meat, but will require more maintenance with a honing steel to keep sharp. The 23 degree edge is a good sturdy edge for your vegetable and utility knives as it will hold an edge for longer and needs less honing.
Kinda like those old roll-along kitchen knife sharpeners that were basically pairs of sharpening disks bonded together. You inserted the blade & rolled it across the countertop. Difference here is with the blade being stationary & magnetically secured you get a more consistent result. Plus, can choose between two sharpening angles. VERY NICE. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Tumbler sharpener (the one you can see all over social medias) is actually a knock-off of HORL Rolling Sharpener. I believe (I'm not 100% sure) that HORL founded in 1993 in Germany even has patent for that design in Europe
The Horl 2 is actually the more preferred one by people. More sturdy than the Tumblr version and they use stronger magnets (guessing neodymium) to hold the blade better
I love my Mercer chef's knife. I picked up one of their culinary school models on sale, and am immensely happy with it. Comfortable, easy to sharpen/keep sharp, and the steel is high quality. Great for the money.
Horl is actually a small company in Germany that makes these. I am sure by now there are some cheaper knockoffs, but I have their Pro model and I haven't really used my whetstones since I got it.
There are copycats, someone on TH-cam sells them. Makes a ton of shorts showing it... and then showing he doesn't know how to use a sharpness testing machine.
These sharpeners have been makin the rounds lately, and while the results are what you'd expect from any sharpening assisting kit or tool, these things are WAY more overpriced than they have any right to be. They cost somewhere like 150-200 USD, where you can grab like a Gatco or Lansky sharpening kit or something similar for around 50-70 which'll produce the same, or better, results with a wider range of edge degrees available. Bit more hassle to set up sure, but not enough of a hassle to justify 130-150 dollars more for a sharpening tool/kit.
Most of my sharpening is for my wood shop, but I do keep my kitchen knives sharp too. For stropping, I now use bare wood, poplar to be specific. I like it better than the leather ones. I did try some kangaroo, which is not supposed to compress, but it does a little. Interesting set up, and watching the start, I was thinking that my little paring knife would need some support under it to keep the cutting edge some what level. Your sharpening of the standard kitchen knife kind of shows that. I would think you could get different angles, unless they have already done that, by cutting a board at the angle you want, and then putting some rare earth magnets in the wood, drill a hole and use epoxy. Not sure how to support a small paring knife though. Might have to improvise....
The problem with this is that it is far too static to be useful for anyone with various styles of knives. Think cleavers or blades with a belly and nose section. Not only that but, different angled cutlery that isn't 20 or 15 degrees will need to be reprofiled.
It's always bugged me when people call that a butter knife. I've always called it a dinner knife or table knife. The butter knife is the one with the angle on it and is totally smooth

So i bought one from the "tumbler" company and their version appers to be a little different. Mine has more rounded edges and the honing side is pure stainless. I like the sharpener however about a couple days after use the roller action with assuing the bearin gs inside no longer function. I've tried to add wd40 but no luck. Totally stiff and wont budge. I wish you better luck with it man.
If you receive a knife that starts off completely unsharpened - like a military surplus bayonet - what is the best way to put an edge on it? Do you say need an actual file to start it, sand paper, a grinder, or do normal whetstones and techniques work? Obviously we're not trying to shave with a nine inch knife - but what is good enough?
Interesting device. Speaking of devices, what is that meter you use to gauge sharpness and how does it work? I've always believed that no matter what sharpener system you use, the ability to maintain the angle it what makes or breaks it. I can freehand sharpen but it's always hit or miss depending on how long in between sharpening sessions. If this product works as it says on the tin, they need to add angle blocks. A lot of woodworkers might be interested in this if it could do a 30 bevel.

Tumbler sharpener (the one you can see all over social medias) is actually a knock-off of HORL Rolling Sharpener. I believe (I'm not 100% sure) that HORL founded in 1993 in Germany even has patent for that design in Europe
dang brother, you blew up! i remember watching you 5 years ago and you had like 2k subs. good for you! nice video man!
That is the most unusual sharpener I've ever seen!

A rare moment where Tyler actually reads the instructions :P
and then... it's in german xD
Tyler you must have the smoothest balls in the world “thanks to manscaped” 😂
Been waiting for this sharpener
2nd cut failed because the bottle was already open and had no internal air pressure to offer resistance.
Haven’t seen a video in 3 years glad to see you’re doing good man forgot all about this channel
now my butter knife can go through butter even better
The Horl 2 is actually the more preferred one by people. More sturdy than the Tumblr version and they use stronger magnets (guessing neodymium) to hold the blade better
It sure seems to work well, I mean it better for that price.
2:09 Where can I purchase a nice high quality knife dulling device like the one featured here?
Home Depot has them purdy cheap if you can't find one in the yard for free😂
As a cook I gotta say you picked a great knife to practice on. Mercer steel is superior to most brands imo. Love you man
How about the butter knife that he got shaving sharp💀
I love my Mercer chef's knife. I picked up one of their culinary school models on sale, and am immensely happy with it. Comfortable, easy to sharpen/keep sharp, and the steel is high quality. Great for the money.
Don't listen to anybody never change your shirt Tyler😂😂😂
Tyler: i dont like soda and rarely drink it
Also tyler: has a never ending supply of soda cans, 2 litres, and bottles
I couldn’t focus after he shaved the spot on his arm 😂 That patch is all I saw for the rest of the video.
I would hope your impressed, 189.00 for it, I would expect it do the sharpening by itself.
Watching this on my night shift again... thank you for your service 🫡✌️
The problem with this is that it is far too static to be useful for anyone with various styles of knives. Think cleavers or blades with a belly and nose section. Not only that but, different angled cutlery that isn't 20 or 15 degrees will need to be reprofiled.
Most kitchen knives are in that range. German ones are 22 IIRC and Japanese ones are 17, I believe. So I'm guessing they are targeting kitchen use.
use a track for the roller that will double as a spacer for smaller blades (something like a pine board with two 1/2 inch lips on either side?)
It's always bugged me when people call that a butter knife. I've always called it a dinner knife or table knife. The butter knife is the one with the angle on it and is totally smooth
Listen, we use it for butter😂
I've never used or even seen one of the things you described. The knife seen in the video is what 99.9% of people use to spread their butter...
@@zwenkwiel816if you image search butter knife, the one I remember growing up, is the one that kinda looks like a cement trowel. It's bent at an angle at the handle and has a pointed tip
I ran into this sharpener awhile back. Saw the price and kept on looking. Looked at the one you linked and it is about $300 cheaper than the one I found. Oh I found the version 2 pro.
Manscaped is the worst groomer I’ve ever used. Hate that sponsor
tyler done whipped out the amazon basics knife 😂
Jesus is King!
So my cat king?
Shut u0
W
Jesus actually prefers the Wicked Edge
Amen
I’ve been waiting for you to see and test it!
Can you please test the work sharp rolling knife sharpener? Same principle but done a little bit differently. I think it would make a great comparison video and get your overall thoughts of which one you think is better. Thanks
Bro must listen to my thoughts 🤯 . I was just thinking yesterday (didn’t even say it out loud or search it or see it or anything) about getting one of these to play around with and boom a video on it
I've seen the tumbler knife sharpener on youtube shorts a million times, nice to see its bleed into my normal recommendations.
My first time seeing your videos and man I just had to subscribe you’re AWESOME and funny😂 you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber 🎉🙏🏾
my oldest boy is a knife fanatic, he sharpens all his friends and their family's knives and such as a side gig even. he has some extremely expensive knifes in his collection and never not gets mad at me for sharping my cheap crap knife with any hand held sized rock i can find anywhere just as sharp as anything he has to sharpen his.
I have been waiting for a non bs review of this.. thank god
I own the Tumblr one and there is a learning curve to it but over all I’m happy with it
Worked way better than I expected
I've been waiting on this review! When I seen it I thought of you so I'm glad it works so great!
Thank you I was super skeptical of these sharpeners
So i bought one from the "tumbler" company and their version appers to be a little different. Mine has more rounded edges and the honing side is pure stainless. I like the sharpener however about a couple days after use the roller action with assuing the bearin gs inside no longer function. I've tried to add wd40 but no luck. Totally stiff and wont budge. I wish you better luck with it man.
Excellent video....actually testing the sharpness
You don't know how perfect the timing of this video considering Aïd is in 3 days from now
YES! I've been hoping you would get this!
The strip has a compound on it that also sharpens the blade
I have a tumbler sharpener that this I bought expecting it to fail and it’s kinda incredible how well the thing works
Sticks of butter everywhere are shaking in their butter boots.
When the rough side gets clogged with metal, just run a pencil eraser over it to remove the metal. Good as new.
Love your videos. I watch your videos at work.
Stropping a butterknife! I love it!
I think I might actually pick one of those up. Good review!
Hey bro,I ABSOLUTELY enjoy watching your videos, I was wanting to know how to get a knife sharpness tester like the one you have?
Ty for taking the time to read and respond to my comment.
I can hear George Costanza's mum Estelle's shrill voice in my head..."Why don't you buy a new shirt?"😊
What was the device he used to check the sharpness/angle? It looked something like a scale but with wires{?} in the center?
Horl is actually the inventor of this sharpener (or at least the first one to bring it to market), Tumbler USA knocked it off.
I've seen mixed reviews about this kind of system though.
Oooooo. You gotta try the "Work sharp guided field sharper" wanted to buy that one but so expensive. But the work sharp is under 40$ so thinking about buying that one
