A great shoe cleaning starter, Jeremy. My late grandmother always said you can judge a man by the state of his shoes. It is a detail thing that instantly conveys whether a man has made an effort with his sartorial presentation. Besides keeping them polished, maintaining shoes in a good state of repair is equally important.
I cannot definitely ascribe my to shoes-any other standards to one person, but if anyone recall such an influencer,that’s a worthy memory. I just know that somewhere along the way I realized that a man OR a woman that takes care of their shoes, clothing, hair, even speech and manners is a necessary prerequisite for someone you can trust, as a partner, friend, employee, whatever. I suppose there is a counter argument against being too obsessive, but that is not what I am talking about.
I enjoyed this. My favorite uncle was in the OSS in WWII, and therefore he was often undercover, including in the Cold War. But when stateside he was parade ground ready with mirror shined shoes. I often talked to him as he prepped for his week. This brings back those fond memories, Thank you.
Well done sir. As you were putting the final touch on the toe I thought back to the spit shine we did in the army and I would write to you about trying a tad bit of water. Then you used your breath. Voila! We didn’t have cream so we would use a match to light the wax for just a few seconds and we would create our own. We didn’t have a need for a hairdryer/heat gun since our hair had been cut off. 😆 James, USA.
me too with the Air Training Corps Cadet services, i started polishing my shoes the week before each parade, a little bit more each day and you end up with a brilliant muti-layered shine

Whomever recommended a tutorial on pocket squares, I wholeheartedly concur. I have recently noticed American commentators-politicians wearing what looks like one of those factory-sewn freebies handed out by some dry cleaners in past generations. I absorbed many lessons from my university fraternity-eating club mates on that topic and I just want to hear yours.

As a young Guardsman in 80s, we use to spend hours shinning our ceremonial boots for queens guard, layering up polish on top of beeswax. You could see your face in them.
Always use Saphir, the best a man can get. I've tried them all, on my oldest Trickers, a pair of Henry, the patina is amazing, I use Saphir clear polish to retain the patina. Saphir might cost more initially, but a little goes a long way. And yes, I use old toothbrushes for welts.
Sounds like you take pride and are doing a great job …. Well cared for old shoes to me are like a classic car that’s been looked after… a pleasure to see🤝
Thank you for posting. I've always worn good shoes and looked after them. High polished. I can't get that lovely oxblood KiWi they used to manufacture. So I've tried to make my own oxblood colour. I have always put yacht varnish on exposed stitching on the welts and under soles insteps, and where possible had then resoled with "from new"with a good quality soles
My horse hair brushes are older than me, having belonged to my parents (possibly my grandparents too!). The one used by my dad (A former Royal Marine) for applying black polish is severely worn down at one end, but is still usable.
My dad and grandad always had shiny shoes/boots which I guess they got from their army days but always had/worn shiny shoes....same here although in these modern times of ssshhhhhhh " trainers etc " not worn as much bit I guarantee if I'm wearing shoes they'll be shiny...Great video 😊

Thank you. I much prefer round laces in a glazed shiny cotton. We get our laces from the factories . I’m sure Saphir don’t make their laces but they do sell them under their brand… they are very good🤝

To give real shine, instead of your breath to give moisture when you’re buffing it, try drops of water that will mix with your polish wax and you will see the difference how shiny your shoes will.

@keithevans0407. With regard to shoe polish, see if you can find a brand called “Cherry Blossom”. It’s made here in the U.K. but may be available in the U.S. through Amazon. A bit off topic but in her younger days, my great aunt used to fit the lids on the tins on the production line at the original factory in West London. “Cherry Blossom” original tins used to have a swivel tin plate “butterfly” on the side so that you could open the lid. @rhodeswood5513. Thank you for this video. You may already know this. I vaguely remember watching a video where some Italian gentlemen were polishing some very high value bespoke men’s shoes. They used women’s nylon tights/stockings to buff the leather after brushing to shine the wax polish. Maybe the close weave of the nylon material acted like a “micro” microfine cloth to improve the finished shine on the shoes. Also, I use renovating shoe polish - which contains tanner’s dye on the welts of my leather soled shoes, applied with a narrow brush. The wax protects the leather and the stitching while the dye covers any scuffs and marks. Thanks again. Stay safe and well.
Yes thank you… many in the forces also use tights for buffing. The first polish I used was a renovating polish with dye in, to feed the leather and colour back to original…. Then a wax polish to shine. Glad you are doing it well🤝🤝
@rhodeswood5513. Thank you for your reply sir. Just another little tip I picked up regarding polishing shoes. Polish your shoes after you have just taken them off. Apparently “warm(er)” leather absorbs the polish better than when cold. Thanks again.
Really happy to see this. I was told that, with my body shape, I had the ability to turn very good suiting into cheap clothes. A little harsh but there was truth in that. However, all my suits were regularly pressed by me; my shirts ironed properly by me - and all my shoes regularly cleaned, polished and waxed. I never wrote the same pair on consecutive days and put in shoe trees to help them re-form their proper shape. I did use to use Kiwi but moved to Saphir for their quality. The only difference in method is that, after the first brushing, I always soaped the uppers to get rid any diet the brush may have missed. Do you have an opinion on that? Have I inadvertently been doing something wrong?

They wear down at the heel ( have you heard the saying ‘down at heel’… meaning struggling or doesn’t care)… plus the leather sole wears thin or through🤝
Is your chum in Doncaster the Shoe Healer? I don't buy my shoes and boots from anywhere else and, although I live in Saudi Arabia, I always bring them back to the Shoe Healer for repair. Simply outstanding on every level, rather like Rhodes Wood, I hasten to add : )
i haven't been using a cream but probably should do, instead, i have been rubbing in carnuba wax after cleaning, I leave it overnight and begin the polish the next day, any thoughts on using carnuba wax compared to a cream ?
When i bought my black Loakes, I bought a can of wax to go with it. I guess if i really wanted to take care of the leather, i really should get some cream polish. Would it be a good idea to put a thin rubber sole on the bottom to protect the leather soles? I cant avoid walking on asphalt with them.
A black cream renovating polish is worth investing in and will cover scuffs more effectively . I would wait while the shoes want re building and ask the factory ( if they go there) to do it… if not your shoe repairer🤝🥂
I can recommend putting the thin "Topy" on leather Soles. Been doing it for 15 years and no issues despite some people saying it "unbalances" Shoes. Make sure you get a competent Bootmaker/Cobbler that matches the edges. Rotate your Shoes, don't wear the same Pair 2 days in a row and insert Shoe Trees when not wearing.
I love this channel. Not sure why though - my normal attire is Primark jog pants and polo shirt, over clad with a boiler suit and steel toecap boots if I'm pursuing my hobbies, or waterproof over trousers and jacket if it's raining. Several people have mistaken me for a vagrant - last Christmas, some do-gooders from the local church were handing out warm coats to the homeless - they offered one to me. I do know how to dress better, and can afford to, but find it _very_ uncomfortable - my preferred tie knot is full or half Windsor, depending on the tie material - last time I wore a tie (full Windsor) was at a funeral some 15 years ago. A pink silk tie, at the request of my deceased friend, who was of the opinion that 'it takes a real man to wear pink'.

Nice video. A quality pair of shoes deserves shoe trees to keep their shape and integrity. Highly recommend Saphir renovateur cream, it's the bees knees at feeding leather.
Never understood why kiwi shoe polish and other footwear items just said that’s it, no more polish ? Is that a good business decision ? Now I will be buying some the polish as shown in this video
I think… I don’t know .. but I feel that there are so many trainers and hybrid trainer /shoes that the market for Kiwi has declined so much, and shoes mainly left at the specialist end. Saphir gained a foothold with excellent products. Kiwi served me and others well for years. It’s a shame to see it withdraw 🤝🤝
A good, everyday approach to polishing a pair of shoes. 👍But until you've seen (or been taught) how to polish shoes/boots as done in the Brigade of Guards or the Household Cavalry, you've never really seen a well polished pair of shoes. It's a far, far lengthier and more involved process than shown here, so I won't go into exactly how it's done now, but we are talking (no joke) bee's wax, polish, an old spoon, a gas burner, water, a soft brush, a damp Selvyt cloth, and, believe it or not, a pair of high denier tights wrapped around a pair of old wool socks. And of course, hours and hours of elbow grease often (as a young Officer Cadet at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst) by torch light in the wee-hours of the morning. If you ever get a chance to see a soldier from the Household Division, take a peek at their boots, and when you see your face reflected back in the mirror-like shine, you will see exactly what I mean.
Yes I’ve seen shoes like that … exceptional … but that is exactly what my video is NOT about, as I said in the video. This is a quick approach to a well buffed shoe🤝

I often see men in nice suits or trousers going to work. Then I look down and see dirty, scuffed shoes. Didn’t they get taught anything. Though I don’t know how they don’t notice it. I clean my shoes regularly, even my runners.
Ah, the lost arts. Now all we need to do is stop the younger generation from wearing their trousers so long that one is able to see the state of their shoes!

Saphir is the best polish going. The mirror shine gives a superior mirror gloss even my ex sergeant major would approve of.

I use stockings to shine the Shoes. Does a brilliant job. I just hope the people at the Supermarket when I buy them don't think I'm a Crossdresser. 😁

Yes I’m a big fan of Crockett and Jones ( our main supplier) the shoes in the video are by Loake 1880 ( Strand) 🤝

I think soaping when needed , for shoes that caught out in a field or sandstorm or just occasionally ? ..🤝🤝

Not sure why though - my normal attire is Primark jog pants and polo shirt, over clad with a boiler suit and steel toecap boots if I'm pursuing my hobbies, or waterproof over trousers and jacket if it's raining. Several people have mistaken me for a vagrant - last Christmas, some do-gooders from the local church were handing out warm coats to the homeless - they offered one to me. I do know how to dress better, and can afford to, but find it _very_ uncomfortable - my preferred tie knot is full or half Windsor, depending on the tie material - last time I wore a tie (full Windsor) was at a funeral some 15 years ago. A pink silk tie, at the request of my deceased friend, who was of the opinion that 'it takes a real man to wear pink'.

Never understood why kiwi shoe polish and other footwear items just said that’s it, no more polish ? Is that a good business decision ? Now I will be buying some the polish as shown in this video
I think… I don’t know .. but I feel that there are so many trainers and hybrid trainer /shoes that the market for Kiwi has declined so much, and shoes mainly left at the specialist end. Saphir gained a foothold with excellent products. Kiwi served me and others well for years. It’s a shame to see it withdraw 🤝🤝

Cleaning sneakers, far more common than leather, or shoes in other materials like suede, is no fun at all.
A good, everyday approach to polishing a pair of shoes. 👍But until you've seen (or been taught) how to polish shoes/boots as done in the Brigade of Guards or the Household Cavalry, you've never really seen a well polished pair of shoes.
It's a far, far lengthier and more involved process than shown here, so I won't go into exactly how it's done now, but we are talking (no joke) bee's wax, polish, an old spoon, a gas burner, water, a soft brush, a damp Selvyt cloth, and, believe it or not, a pair of high denier tights wrapped around a pair of old wool socks.
And of course, hours and hours of elbow grease often (as a young Officer Cadet at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst) by torch light in the wee-hours of the morning.
If you ever get a chance to see a soldier from the Household Division, take a peek at their boots, and when you see your face reflected back in the mirror-like shine, you will see exactly what I mean.

I often see men in nice suits or trousers going to work. Then I look down and see dirty, scuffed shoes. Didn’t they get taught anything. Though I don’t know how they don’t notice it. I clean my shoes regularly, even my runners.
