    The FK8 is like a good vintage wine, it has gotten better and "more recognition" with age. At first many were too focused on the polarizing aesthetics of the Type R, but then it began to slowly capture the hearts and minds of many. This FK8 is reminiscent of the game changing impact the NA1 NSX had (to only a degree of course, as the original NSX was groundbreaking in so many ways). It's been 5 years since the FK8 came into the market and it has not been dethroned yet as the best overall hot hatch.

      You could argue a good case for the Hyundai. But only on a preference/budget basis. I think the Hyundai is pretty underrated because of the badge. Similar to how you see so few Type R FK8's on the road. It's a shame, but at the same time it's evidence that people don't have taste in good driving. Instead we have a crap-ton of SUV's roaming about which aren't even as practical as these hot hatches

    • @StandingUpForBetter
      @StandingUpForBetter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It should come at least with the "option" of a 6-speed manual. For the Type R there there is no option. You only get the 6-speed manual and Honda has sold tens of thousands of them and NOBODY complains. I think the real reason there is no 6-speed manual in the Golf GTI Club Sport s because VW knows it will be compared to the best in the business as seen in the Type R and that is a battle VW is unwilling to fight. Sad because even Hyundai has a great 6-speed manual in the Veloster N.

The fact that VW is unwilling to improve the manual they make or even partner with someone who makes good manuals shows how much they care about the enthusiasts. Brilliant as always from Dan.
    The lack of individual mode in the Civic actually makes the Golf the better car to own in IMO. As Dan alluded to, the Civic either leaves you bouncing around annoyingly on B roads in Sport mode, or stuck with a dulled off throttle response in order to get decent pliancy from the suspension.

    When I saw VW were releasing the Clubsport fairly soon after the MK8’s launch I had a feeling that they had rushed it just to get some bigger numbers on the top trumps card and it turns out that they have. I lived with a 3 door Edition 40 manual for a week or so and it was fabulous, it felt like VW had spent some proper time on it as you explained on your review of it all them years ago at Evo. The MK8 doesn’t look like it has that same ethos at all, the slightest of chassis changes, a remap and a fancy sticker, a bit of a wasted opportunity. Yet again though Dan a mega video 👍🏼

    • @volkswizard

      The new Clubsport would kill the Edition 40. It may have lost to the Civic on subjective items but short of the Clubsport S the bigger picture is that this is the best driving Golf so far (I have driven both and I've got a CS Ed40 on the drive as I type).

      It’s such a shame the Honda is a bit marmite with its looks! The reviews on this car have been amazing, a true drivers car. As for the VW clubsport, I’m inclined to agree that it does look like VW rushed this model. It might be the most capable GTI to date if you exclude the Clubsport S but that doesn’t make it the best Golf GTI. The anniversary editions just felt a little bit more special and the Edition 40 was the best and closest to the Clubsport S in my opinion.
      Ps you can have a lot of fun in the Mk5 GTI for a fraction of the money.

The edition 40’s manual was a lovely gearbox and considering this car is still based on the the 7.5 I can’t see that the suspension changes to this one would leave much on the table on a twisty road if the two were to meet. The edition 40 would still appeal more special to most, 3 doors, manual box, alcantara wheel 👌🏼 it felt special and it looked it and I don’t think this one does.

    APR stage 1 high torque, GTI 2019, killed the civic on top end and start, but once that Type R went into corners, no chance to catch up. Type R is a true track sport vehicle, GTI is more like a daily with some track features. This is coming from a GTI owner.

    When it comes to a hot golf they are all a bit boring so you might as well get the normal GTI and if you getting the normal GTI you would be far better off saving your money and getting the Skoda Octavia VRS. There is only one reason to buy the VW and that is badge snobby.

    • @TheLordCrash
      @TheLordCrash 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Clubsport costs less than 5k more than the normal GTI and you get a much better performance, steering and sound. If you are interested in a hot hatch Golf you should always go for the Clubsport and not the normal GTI. The normal GTI is usually sold to old people who don't know any better. Skoda Octavia RS is a whole different car class and offers quite less than the Clubsport in terms of performance, steering and quality and materials. People buying a Skoda Octavia RS are usually a whole different group of people that those interested in a hot hatch like the Clubsport. You buy a Skoda Octavia RS because you have to carry your family or other stuff around and because you want to combine a practical car with some good performance. That's not the case with a normal (non Variant) Gold and especially not a Clubsport or R. Just like the Civic Type R people buy these cars because they need a daily driver that is also fun. And the Clubsport really delivers on that.
