  • This video contains building stairs out of rocks, laying a French drain, damp proofing a wall and installing a beautiful outdoor shower! I'm so glad to have met Selina & Mareike who found me on TH-cam and decided to come and help out - a real power team. Thank you so much to my friend Paul to push the shower installation!

    It's lovely to see how much you got done with the extra help, Maya! ❤
    As a suggestion for the shower drain: maybe you could dig a basin with a trench to direct the water to the back of the cabin, so the water doesn't collect underneath the cabin and causes damp and rot. You can fill the trench and basin with gravel and put the wooden planks over the basin to stand on.
    It's a simple solution, but it shouldn't be too much work and should help for now 😊

    Great work Maya, and your Rock Team, and not forget the shower helper. With so much wood on your property, I would have made a Rocket Stove and a 20 mm copper tubing rapped around the high riser/ stove pipe to feed into a solar geyser for life, saving you a lot of money on gas. Plenty of Rocket Stove designs to have free hot water for life. You can build another one for heating your outdoor spa bath/pool, again, many designs and types of materials one can use.

    Maya you also need to: 1)cover the walls with a PU based paint-on film (twice) 2) Use a separate plastic membrane against the wall before filling the ditch with soil 3) make a two-level (one at the bottom and one half way up) french drain system before filling it all up. French drain pipes need to be surrounded with gravel and geo-textile. This will be a decades-spanning permanent solution.

      I'll ask you since you seem to know what you're talking about, but it seemed odd and counter intuitive to line it with concrete. It makes sense as in it will keep run off from the gutters/roof from getting into the building's foundation, but ground water can still come up and get into the foundation from below in the rainy season, so wouldn't it be better to allow that water to get into the French drain and move away from the house? I'm confused with this one.

    HI Maya, A couple of things.
    1) Great to see you create a staircase from the river terrace up to the house terrace; I think it has been long overdue.
    2) I was surprised to see you cement in the french drain pipe; I have not seen that done before in videos from France, Spain, the UK, the USA or Australia.
    3) Nice to follow along as you improve your comfort levels each week.
    Good luck with your continued renovations.

    • @harveythepooka
      @harveythepooka 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I have no idea why she's covered the French drain with cement. At 1st I was thinking to block the area from the ground water so only rain water could get to the wall, but the bottom of the tube was exposed to the ground below. But the cement gets rid of a lot of the surface area to absorb the water in a downpour, so I don't understand what's going on. I just hope it works.

    • @mayafeliz
      @mayafeliz  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi, because the pipe is perforated also in the bottom it needs sealing from below, otherwise the water would just pass to the lower parts of soil :)

    • @VanlifeByTris
      @VanlifeByTris 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@mayafeliz I don't think that's how French drains work. They operate under the premise that the water takes the path of least resistance, and that is seeping into the pipe from the bottom. As the level in the pipe rises, it flows down it, utilising surface tension to draw the rest of the water with it. As I understand from what you have done, the concrete will act as a run-off itself, and it is unlikely it will ever reach the top for the pipe to serve any purpose. Whether that matters or not, I do not know. th-cam.com/video/eRL_5G9c08s/w-d-xo.html

  • @markcallaghan843
    @markcallaghan843 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The yellow pipe is perforated at the top and the bottom. It’s so that the pipe can pick up ground water from above and below. Once the water is in the pipe it will always flow down the pipe because it’s the least restrictive path. All you’ve done by mortaring the pipe in place is stopped it from picking up water from below. Now it can only collect from above. In the future if those buildings suffer from riding damp you will know where to look to fix it. I’m not trying to be a downer, I just wanted to share what little I know so that now you know too. I love your enthusiasm and you girls make a good team. You’ve done so much in just a few days!

  • @emmaslow
    @emmaslow 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    Well done for tackling this project! I also started with little knowledge and have learnt everything from working alongside more experienced people and then more research. In that spirit, here's some info for future improvements - I would really recommend putting the 'knobbly' membrane against the wall (it's a semi-rigid sheet / panel with protruding bumps, looks like rigid bubble wrap) before backfilling. In fact with that product you don't actually need to waterproof the wall, you leave it vapour-open, if you ever have to tackle this again. I also always start with a geotextile membrane in the trench, (to stop the gravel sinking) then a gravel layer, then wrap the perforated pipe in geotextile membrane (to stop silt from filling the holes over time) before laying it on the gravel. Finish with a layer of gravel placed quite carefully on top of the pipe - the aim is for this top gravel layer to spread wide, to protects the pipe from crushing - better still, line the sides of the trench with big rocks, just proud of the pipe height, and in-filled with gravel, to keep loading off the pipe.

    Showe floor idea. I have an out door bath house. Over several,trial,and improvement cycles I now have a concrete pad with a drain in the Foood. I put the pipe i before concert so I could direct the water. The grey water travels 20 meters to my orchard.
    The bath house is the setting for one of the music videos I posted. So you see it.
    I have had dirt, wood, metal grates, the concrete floor has been the best.

Just dig a small trench under your wood pallets that lead to the hillside. The water will run down the hill and not pool up and it will be covered by the pallets

    Well-done. I just want to say that several people have used this exact water heater in off-grid showers (in Portugal). I've seen at least 2 of them encounter the same problem. Being outside in the elements in winter the pipe froze and burst (if I remember correctly). I know "Frankie off grid" had this problem. They might give you some advice if you contact them. If you want to water proof the stone house walls where they are inside the hill.
    Then your going to need a concrete sealant to get painted onto the concrete, otherwise it will keep absorbing moisture.
    A piece of plastic rated for water will also help to keep the water out.

    Better to use bamboo like fencing (china stores have it) instead of shower curtain which will stick to you already with a slight breeze.....and also it looks more rusic🌺🌺🌺

    Why the concrete? In the Americas, French Drains are never covered in concrete, so curious if that’s a building practice of Portugal.
    French Drains have a trench then stone, landscape fabric (to keep dirt out), perforated pipe, fold fabric into trench, cover with more stone, cover with dirt. So to see how much work you put in is impressive and hopefully long lasting for your build. Great work!!!! ❤
