    Maya you did a good job of doing everything on your to do list, but you need to run a bead caulk down the seams of the wall that you painted and where the little roof meets the wall of the cabin . Also your little roof needs to have a slope to it so the rain water will run downward and not sit or run to the back where it meets the wall. Fall and Winter is a good time to clean up your property to make garden spaces for Spring time. You can also plant a fall / winter gardens. I love how you like to learn from your friends on how to do things or make things and you get busy with all hands in on doing things for yourself instead of depending on others to do it for you... You're not afraid to do the work or get your hands dirty. You need to start chopping up the wood for your little heater , which I hope that it will be big enough to keep you warm this winter. If you have any old roof tiles left you should put them on the water pump house you built if you don't then the rain will eventually rot the wooden roof. You have the perfect property , I love it.

      Well said! Plus Maya you should clear a few of the big stones that are in the paths of your water streams. It would help the water to reach the river and not overflow in your cabin way. God job so far

      Thank you!💪 the roof has a slope, those sandwich panels don't need a big one. Yes I need to caulk the edge, didn't get to do that yet.

    A bead of waterproof caulk/silicone inside & out down those wooden joints would help and be easier to do? Might be good to add a pice of your black membrane offcuts behind the shower as a splashback? The drainage looks like it’s working really well. I hope it all held.

    Maya, I have been really enjoying your video series, amazing work so far your property is lovely. One thing of note in this video, where you painted all the edges, you left out the most important part the actual edge where the wood was cut. Short version, these really need paint as well. Long version, the ends where the wood was cut is the end grain of the wood and allows all the cut and open wood fibers to absorb and transmit moisture over long distances through capillary action.

    Maya, You may not know it, but you accomplished another important job, which was removing pieces of lumber from underneath your cabin. Aside from rotting, lumber stored in a dark and damp place is an invitation for animals to live and breed (especially termites) and you don't need that no matter what your cabin lumber is treated with. Your progress is showing, and your abilities along with it. Nice work!

    Hello Maya, look at the shower ceiling, the water heater gas leak pipe must be at least 50 cm vertical and only then bend, otherwise the water heater may not evacuate the gases correctly and not work.

    On the edges… you need to paint the end grain. It will act as a giant wick when it gets wet.

  • @stevejohnstonbaugh9171
    @stevejohnstonbaugh9171 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It would be good to paint the endgrain of the "pillars", too. The end grain is the most susceptible to rot. So a coat of breathable paint will help to keep the end grain dry. 👍

    Great Job Maya. You can come work with me anytime. The way you mark all the things off of your list in such an orderly fashion, work until dark. Let's trade time? You are a task master and as you spend more time in Portugal you are learning so much. I have loved watching all of your progress this year. How motivating, intriguing and inspiring you are. You inspired me to create my own TH-cam Channel. Wow I had no idea how much work it was to film, work then edit and create content. I LOVE IT. Thanx for being a great inspiration. I am filming my Renovation on this 1857 Historic HOme in Upstate New York USA then will sell it at the end of 2024. My plan is to move to Portugal or Italy in 2025. I will be arriving to Portugal on Dec 8th to explore. Thanx again for all of the inspiration. All of your hard work and accomplishments as well as the fun you are having building your future on your special river land. Hugs to you friend. Gina in Upstate New York USA moving to Portugal hopefully

    Great to see you making progress 👌you mentioned that some of the wood from under your cabin had woodworm. I wouldn’t advise storing it on the deck of your cabin as they might transfer to your cabin and start eating it. I had a wooden sculpture that needed a new base and unfortunately the oak that was used must’ve had woodworm. Needless to say the beautiful sculpture was eaten from the inside 😳

    💕Your a one woman survivalist.
    I would like to mention but you do like help from you friends. You would be wise maybe to contact the company you purchased the cabin from to ask how to make the pillars waterproof as they really should not of leaked.
    *Caulking is for inside only.
    *I think you will need to paint the joins again, not the whole pillar. Small art brush will do.
    *your roof on the shower to get it to have the water run off the correct way, put a few washers (3 or 4 good size and thickness) between the roof and the support that should do. Good luck🍀

    Good work, but the corners are not sealed. I can see gaps in between. I think you have to seal it with UV-resistant filler or silicon. Water will otherwise still ingress the wood gaps. Also at the start or ends of the planks, there are grooves that are open to water ingress. Good luck with your works looks great the progress.
