Mixing concrete by hand in a wheelbarrow the easy way

  • I thought I would make a short video on a fairly easy way to mix concrete by hand in a wheelbarrow. Sometimes if you only need a small amount of concrete and you don’t have the use of a concrete mixer mixing it in a wheelbarrow can be the best option.
    I have seen many people spending ages mixing up the sand/chippings and cement together then adding water and spending yet more time that this may be of interest.
    I first of all put half of the sand and gravel in the front half of the wheelbarrow, then half the cement followed by the other half of the sand and gravel and the rest of the cement.
    The key to this is to make sure it is all in the front of the wheelbarrow.
    Pour in about half a bucket of water and work the sand, gravel and cement back into it making sure you get down to the bottom of the wheelbarrow. move the mixed concrete to the front add the rest of the water and repeat the process.
    Then it is just a question of working it over for a couple of minutes making sure there is no unmixed material at the bottom.
    How to Mix Concrete by Hand. How to Mix Concrete.

    Thank you so much for this. As a woman and a keen DIY person I often mix concrete the way my father did, but this is much easier so thank you. Don't know why anyone should leave negative comments when you are being so helpful.

    My dad and I did exactly this when I was a kid. We poured a walkway around one side of our house and then another with steps coming off the porch. This works people, I can still see the work my dad and I did 30 years ago on Google maps of our old house.

    • @kbanghart
      @kbanghart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So he's making it from scratch, as it were, as opposed to just mixing quikrete with water? Not sure how that's easier. The way my dad taught me, we use a pulaski, which is an axe-type tool with one blade horizontal which helps it cut through the concrete and mix it really well.

    I've always mixed using a barrow for small jobs. Then I started buying concrete molds to construct a Roman garden and decided to invest in a mixer. Well I used it two or three times then went back to the barrow because I wasn't that impressed. What's more, it made a noise like a WW1 tank with half it's track missing. So I'm back to plugging away with my wheel barrow and loving it...and that method you used is fine...

    Good technique. One of the first things I learned about concrete was to always add the dry to the water, never the water to the dry - and this method makes that possible in a very easy way. I don't mix much of it, but sometimes I need to set a post or something and make up a tiny batch. I have to buy those teensy sacks that hold about a half gallon of dry cement. It's expensive that way but I can't lift the others LOL :-) Tina

    I've mixed concrete in a wheelbarrow many times but next time I'm going to follow this method. I used to mix it dry before adding the water, which is quite hard work, but I can see the method in this madness, it looks like half the effort. Simples :)

    Nice one mate! I was taught the same method when I was a kid (From an English Bricklayer). Definitely the easiest way to mix concrete, mortar and render. We have light all steel mixing shovels here in OZ that are a bit straighter that yours. I find the angle to be good for mixing in a wheel barrow. Actually, the two biggest wheel barrow makers here in Australia make their tubs with sharp internal corners so the shovel can get right in there.
