@@Radican1Just go a little slower. IE instead of a 3/4 turn on a 6.5:1 reel on a quick rod twitch, go a 1/2 turn on a 7.5:1 reel, but most of your action is now in your rod. The underwater footage confirms what I’ve been suspecting. I’m over working my plastic baits, compared to what I want it to do. Thanks for posting this.
Steve., this video is pure Gold! I tripped my catches using #4 and #5…..your video showed me how much I over work my soft plastics. Thank you for all of your great content! 🎣
I am absolutely blown away by how much this video will undoubtedly help my success in fishing soft plastics and jigs I've been fishing soft plastics for 40 years and learned more in your
I second @arthurdirindinjr1792 sentiments. Thank you for sharing this great analysis on the 5 retrieve techniques. I really had no idea how much my technique actually moved the bait on the bottom. I truly learned something new today.
Amazing info. One thing I always do is play with the lure in front of me and practice how I will fish It. Some of the baits I make are sinking blend and some are floating blend which impart different movement and what not. Very importantto play with the bait and understand the ways of how to fish it before you start bombing it out there. Sometimes it takes that to understand it better because you can have the wrong reel ratio that your using and now you have to compensate because your not running a high speed ratio. Hope that helps. Anyways this man is a legend I go here for tips and tricks and I'm always satisfied.
Finally, a video that shows this unambiguously instead of just using vague descriptions! Where I'm at, water visibility is always 1 foot or less, so it's hard for me to get an impression of what my soft plastic is doing underwater. Now I know!
That was really an eye opener for me. I need to pay attention more to how I am moving my plastics. I have been moving my rod tip way too much. I am enjoying the bass behavior bundle. It was worth the weight. Thanks Steve.
You constantly provide content like this video which shed light on the essential nuances of technique which make all the difference. Every video is a literal perspective unlike any other channel; I have learned so much. Everything we do at the point of the rod is amplified so much by the time it reaches the lure!
Best advice I got for a Texas rig was reel it as slow as you can #4, if you think you’re going slow, go even slower. Drives em crazy and fish love to follow the worm and inspect it.
This video is so so important for not only new anglers, but anglers who don’t spend everyday on the water. I’m sharing this to a lot of people. I will add, do you think it would be possible to do a third angle with a “hat cam” showing what the line looks like coming off your rod into the water? I tend to watch my line quite a bit to get an understanding of what’s going on vs watching my hands. Would be good with a hi vis yellow line or something
This may be the single best piece of content I've seen on fishing YT in quite some time. Actual information that we all thought we understood that shows us we don't know jack 😅
This is why I've tested a few rigs in a swimming pool where the bait is visible. An old Shakespeare/Zebco push button with a super low gear ratio allows for more mistakes in wind speed than an open bail or baitcaster. I still often like to jig with a short pole pushbutton in little nooks as I have the accuracy of a baitcaster without any of the other issues involved.
Just came across your vids a couple of weeks ago you’ve been knockin it out of the park for years .. lettin me know after 55 years of fishin I don’t know as much as I thought I did… thanks keep up the excellent work..HAVE FUN!!!
I could be wrong, but with the camera view, it looks like many people focus on the wrong part of the rod. The end ur holding is only moving a small amount so u think ur just twitching the lure. Look at the tip of the rod to better approximate how far ur lure is moving.
I sort of discovered the reel drag/tip down last week while working a swim jig through downed timber. I could feel everything AND I was getting bit! A real eye opening video, Thanks.
This demonstration changed my retrieve methods. Seeing what is happening with the lure has always been a curiosity for me. Now I have a good idea what’s happening down there.
Showed me what I've been doing for the better part of 50yrs compared to what I thought I've been doing. Time to put some thinking into my game plan. It's going to be interesting to say the least. Thanks man, going this morning to get started. That's the justification I'm telling Angie.
Great video! I think this is why I have always had more success with shakey head or ned rigs because it forces me to just shake the rod tip where as with other techniques I am more prone to move the bait too much.
After spending so much time filming underwater, it really hit me how much I would work a lure way more than I realized. It doesn't take much to make a huge difference. Thank you for watching.
A great demonstration with the camera, it helps clarify the action differences for those who have not fished clear water or paid attention to what is actually happening below the surface with the lure. I am not sure the title applies though, except for those starting out. Each of those retrieves can have application beyond the level bottom demonstration. Knowing bottom structure and vegetation determines which of those retrieve patterns will work and when. I have used them all at one point or another with success.
Wow the way you explained that and showed us underwater footage is absolutely incredible. Thank you! Can’t wait to see what other videos you have. Keep up the good work sir!
Wow!! It's unbelieve able the difference in the presentations!!! Thanks for showing & sharing as it made me think I change the way to present a bait!!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!! 🤠👍

So many of the tackle tip videos are no Brainer deals BUT this one was brilliant using that conduit to show what tiny shakes of the rod actually do!! Great one man!!
Rod tip down 5.2:1 reel when its cold or im needing to make myself slowdown and crawl jig, shakey head etc. Another great video cant argue with what we see. I normally use 7'2" rod and will lower tip rod as i get closer to the boat/bank.
wow! definitely one of your best ever, and as we all know, on certain days, these are the subtleties that can make the difference in eliciting a strike..
Dude that's awesome. I would have never guessed that a Texas rig would have been moving that much just by twitching my rod. Time to start slow reeling. Thanks
EXCELLENT video Steve. Great content which will help me out so much. Wow. The work to get that split screen up there was well worth it. Take care my friend!!

I’m surprised this doesn’t have a lot more views. Great information and camera setup/synchronization. I’ll be binge watching your videos in the time to come.
Awesome video. I would have never guessed there would be that much movement with just moving the rod tip up. I was thinking it would just be dragging the lure across the bottom of the lake.
Maybe the single best explanation of rod movement and it's effects. It will make me slow down and hold my rod tip lower especially on light bite days. Post spawn for sure great video again. Your only getting better. Good job
Good topic. You have the very best TH-cam Bass fishing channel . Thank you for all your hard work. I noticed in one video that you had Isaiah 6:8 sticker on your truck. More Men of God need to show the world that they are believers. God says to plant the seed and he will grow it.

Great video as always! I've always favored a side sweep retrieve for my jigs and plastics because I felt it kept better bottom contact. I still go too fast a lot of times, though. Hard to slow down. I could probably do with a 2:1 reel, lol.
I remember when I had a pile of 5.1:1 reels. Those are extremely hard to find anymore. There are still a few manufacturers cranking them out, but not many.

Awesome footage & info. Very good point about as lure gets closer & you have less line out, how much more movement the rod has on our baits! My old home lake in Ohio before I moved south was crystal clear. I would play with my baits in shallows so I knew what my rod & reel actions were actually doing to my baits.
