    Tomas was one of my first instructors. I finished my private pilots license in 22 days (8 hours per day, every day) and my instrument rating in 8 weeks. Not only is he a great instructor but he's fun to fly with.

      @Feyi Joseph was some time ago at smo airport at american flyers which is no longer there. a great place to learn because they always had aircraft and instructors available, so if i wanted to fly everyday, i could, and did. overall i paid about 25k. that included all of my equipment, books, testing supplies, test fees with the faa, bose headphones, etc. i got a sallie mae student loan for the entire process. took about 2 days to apply and two weeks to get funded. started immediately after. if i was to offer advice, i would say, download the Gleim software for the written tests and
      memorize all of the answers in the test bank so that you are ready to take the written test immediately and get that out of the way. that saves time and money. also fly as many days back to back as you can so you can practice what you learned the day before and not have to rehash information. saves time and money too. also fly with an instructor who cares and stays on course with the material so you dont waste time in the air or classroom.

    Hey Mike, Tomas is GREAT! I had the opportunity to fly with him last July, during a checkout flight in my Sling. We flew to Camarillo for lunch. My first time flying in and navigating the LA airspace, which Tomas knows so well. If anyone gets an opportunity to fly with him, go for it, but make sure its in a SLING! LOL

    That Sling sure is sweet.

    On landing do you follow rader vectors to intercept the localizer then contact tower say on the ils they give clearance to land then pilot flying watch panel glance out the window at 3000 agl then at 1000 agl announce approaching visual transition and at 200 agl watching out the window but if it is a visial landing same thing but visual transition at 800 agl is that the proper procedure

    Hey, brother! Great video once again! I would like to ask the instructor what will be his best advice for someone trying to become a CFI who hasn't flown in a few years (study tips, flying hours, etc)?

    • @flexairz
      @flexairz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My tip as a CFI: get enough recent flight experience couple hundredth hours at least, be seasoned before becoming a CFI. This way you have the knowledge, experience, the flight time to become a good CFI.

    • @davidktimothy
      @davidktimothy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flexairz, thanks for your response. I'm 47 with the FDNY and getting ready to retire. I'm embarking on a second career, hopefully in the airlines. I currently hold a commercial rating (a gift to myself) with a little less than 300 hrs. I haven't flown in a few years, but I'm about to go get current again and start back my flying. I've always known that the CFI route was the best way to build time. So based on what you're saying, just rent and keep flying for some time before jumping into it?

    Thanks for another great video! I have started my ground school self study and can you help me understand a few things? On the FAA Knowledge Test I know there are 60 questions and have 120 Minutes to answer them. •What about the oral test questions during the check ride? ▪How many questions are there? What are the topics? •How much time do I have to answer them?▪ What materials can I use to answer these questions if any?🛩

    • @mojogrip
      @mojogrip  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      *Oral part of your checkride typically doesn't have a set number of questions. And it's not going to be in the format of multiple choice Q&A. Think of it more as a conversation you are having with the examiner. They're going to test your knowledge as a pilot by asking different questions. *There really isn't any time limitations on each question. Rule of thumb is to always keep your answers short and sweet because one question may lead to another within the same subject matter, depending on the answer you provide.*From what I can remember, at your checkride, you're allowed to have a calculator and your charts, so you may reference those at any point to answer a question. I did a write up here www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/my-ppl-checkride-notes-from-2016-hope-it-helps.109685/ on my checkride, hope that can give you a better idea.

    Excellent video Mike. Short but good. I am seriously considering PPL after continuously seeing minorities flying and teaching. I was one who always assumed it was a military route you had to take.

      Nah man, you can totally swing the private without signing your life away. I encourage it all the way one of the things I am proudest of in my life. Try not to think of it from a racial point of view though, it's what limits us entirely. We have this built in social construct of what "we should do and be comfortable with" those days are dead. You can do it and I will tell you this much, not once have I ever felt an ounce of racism as a black pilot. Mostly what I encounter are pilots excited to see other pilots. We're a rare breed so anyone who is a pilot is part of a minority club who loves being 1000s of feet in the air with the freedom to go anywhere. Go for it!

    • @hookeatup6616
      @hookeatup6616 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @O M of course we experience racisim. Its a real problem in our society. If seeing other minority pilots is inspiration to fly great. The more people flying the better. The intent of my statement is to remind that man that his blackness is not a limitation of intelligence or ability and that applauding a black man's accomplishment of acheiving what all humans regardless of sex or race can should not be celebrated. That suggests a handicap of sorts albeit in ways we have been socially handicapped. I hope that explains my statement. If we have more minorities in the cockpit it does signal to others this is an option for them even though they may feel like its not. I get it. Aviation is a wonderful thing that I wish more people regardless of sex or race should pursue.

    • @hookeatup6616
      @hookeatup6616 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Total costs or average? This a hard question to answer as it depends on your area, how quick you learn, and type of plane. I'd say about 10-12k average. BUT you can get that cost down significantly if you prepare properly. If i were to do it again I'd do all my ground school and get an instructor to sit with me for 10 hours on even a basic simulator

      @@daviddavis5312 Then budget for 40 hours of rental and instructor time at a flight school near you. Also you can try to find an instructor with their own plane that will give you a favorable price. Additionally you can take out a loan for $20,000 buy a Cessna 150 which will burn 6 gallons an hour and have an operational cost with engine reserve of around 70 bucks or less/hour. Find an instructor and you can probably get it down to under 6000 to private - $5000 in fuel and instructor and about 3 monthly payments on your loan. When you're done you'd have your own plane and come out of pocket that $6000 amount. That's exactly how I would approach it if I had to do it again. I currently have a cherokee 235 that I bought while a student for $40,000 that I will be using for my IFR. Working to find an instructor as we speak that way I am only paying instructor fees and my fuel costs which will be alot less than a school charges. The trade off to a flight school is you can pay for instructions ala carte and get support, different instructors and a plane that works haha. So if you're looking for cheap theres a few options for you.
