I always loved this song, but as a French guy, didn't really listen to the lyrics, it was a "happy" song to me, until I've seen the video on YT, decades later... Now it makes me cry all time I listen to it. Although I'm no gay, I relate to him and the rejection he had as a young boy. I find this music much more beautiful than before, although it has become a sad song to me. Peace Dereck.
Cette chanson est un hymne pour les gays du monde entier. Elle reflète tellement la violence que nous subissions alors, et que certains d'entre nous, trop nombreux, continuent de subir aujourd'hui
Such a classic. The lyrics are often overlooked but as a young guy battling to come out the pain and anguish to do so exists in this song and jimmy’s vocal delivery is on point 💖
Jimmy Somerville is one of the best singer of the 80's. This version is different of the single. Years after years , the singers change the tone of their songs.
I was aware he still had a good voice unlike other artists.i don't know how he does it? Does he look after his voice by being healthy and doing reg vocal excercises? I have 2 more Jimmy vids for you to look at 1.street musician singer original singer comes along and joins him. it's 1.14 long Jimmy Somerville 'smalltown boy' (breathtaking vocals), let's rock Bristol 6 June 2015.
Just how beautiful is this version of such a classic song - you need to review Jimmy's work with Sparks (No. 1 Song In Heaven) - brilliant. As as aside, I now know what happened to Schroeder from Charlie Brown - he's playing the piano on this video.
If I had heard this song and listened to the lyrics when I was a teen in the 80s, I wouldn't have felt so alone. I also knew I had to leave my smalltown to find acceptance somehow, I had never told a soul that I was gay, and chose to go to a University as far from home as possible. Such a poignant song and such a common story.
The lyrics with French translation.. I'm French, I never really paid attention to the story, it was up tempo so I listened to it more as a party song, not a sad song.. Piano/voice gives it another dimension! Tu pars le matin avec tout ce que tu possèdes dans une petite valise noire You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case Seul sur une plate-forme, le vent et la pluie sur un visage triste et solitaire Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face Mère ne comprendra jamais pourquoi tu devais partir Mother will never understand why you had to leave Mais les réponses que tu cherches ne seront jamais trouvées chez toi But the answers you seek will never be found at home L'amour dont vous avez besoin ne sera jamais trouvé à la maison The love that you need will never be found at home Fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Poussé et donné des coups de pied, toujours un garçon solitaire Pushed around and kicked around, always a lonely boy Tu étais celui dont ils parlaient en ville pendant qu'ils te rabaissaient You were the one that they'd talk about around town as they put you down Et aussi fort qu'ils essaieraient, ils te blesseraient pour te faire pleurer And as hard as they would try they'd hurt to make you cry Mais tu n'as jamais pleuré devant eux, juste pour ton âme But you never cried to them, just to your soul Non, tu n' as jamais pleuré devant eux, juste pour ton âme No, you never cried to them, just to your soul Fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez (pleurant à votre âme) Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (crying to your soul) Fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez (pleurant à votre âme) Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (crying to your soul) Fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez (pleurant à votre âme) Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (crying to your soul) Fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away Pleure, garçon, pleure Cry, boy, cry Pleure, garçon, pleure Cry, boy, cry ... Tu pars le matin avec tout ce que tu possèdes dans une petite valise noire You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case Seul sur une plate-forme, le vent et la pluie sur un visage triste et solitaire Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face Fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.

If there is one song you should rect to ASAP it's the new song by Stromae "L'enfer". It was played during the news and it was considered controversial, apparently. To me it was a beautiful moment where Stromae sings about his personal hell and suicidal tendencies, shinig light on a real problem and giving every person who ever thought of suicide, including me, the feeling of being less alone...

Dereck, I love the fact that you respond to this genre of music so positively but wish you'd stop looking at yourself, pushing your merch, your subscribe and like button, choreographing your reaction which seems somewhat staged and missing the opportunity to explore the intention of the original artist, in this case a young Scottish gay boy that had to leave home because of his father's rejection. You've completely skipped the messaging and are just focusing on your "likes". Suggestion: less about you more about the artist and maybe then I'll subscribe and hit the like button.

The beautiful haunting voice of Jimmy Somerville, but not lets underestimate the incredible piano accompaniment.
Just one of the best voices in the business. Fabulous.
he lives not far from me in London, will always give you a smile, still has his fantastic voice
This fabulous stripped back version makes me cry. It touches something very deep inside of this 71 y.o. woman.
It's beautiful in its simplicity ...crystal voice, a jewel.

In the 80s', I discovered "Jimmy Somverville" with his new group " the Communards". At that time, they had a good song named "So Cold The Night".
So cold the night is one of my all time favourites. The back story to it is in Richard Cole's book An Embarrassment of Riches.
The fact that such a little man has such a powerful and touching voice, god his voice is still as beautiful as back then.
I love this song !!!!! this version is amazing ! what a voice ! thank you
I discovered Bronksi Beat in 85 when I was studying in Europe. It was a big part of my coming out.
Jimmy is a legend, and he dances like a master!
I'm not crying, you're crying.
What a beautiful voice!
What an incredible voice. I once saw him live in the early 90’s. A fantastic singer.
Good grief. How does Jimmy still sound so good ?

Beautiful acoustic version of this song. Thank You.
Nice version, love it. Still on top. Thanks Dereck. Greeting from France.
one of the best voices.
One of the few singers who sound as good live as he does in the studio! Also, his voice hasn’t changed a bit after all these years!
You should hear him talk as he has a very deep voice !!!
This song is based on his youth, he was brought up in a small tough industrial town in Scotland where he felt alone and isolated growing up.
Chek out: Holly Johnson sings 'The Power Of Love' on 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks' Christmas special
I love it soooooo muuuuccchhhh ! I prefer the original, but this is new version that is a pleasure for my ears !
My favorite song!
what an artist !!!
Second best anthem of 80's to me.

'Why' by bronski beat is definitely my favorite song by them!!!

Tu pars le matin avec tout ce que tu possèdes dans une petite valise noire
You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case
Seul sur une plate-forme, le vent et la pluie sur un visage triste et solitaire
Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face
Mère ne comprendra jamais pourquoi tu devais partir
Mother will never understand why you had to leave
Mais les réponses que tu cherches ne seront jamais trouvées chez toi
But the answers you seek will never be found at home
L'amour dont vous avez besoin ne sera jamais trouvé à la maison
The love that you need will never be found at home
Fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Poussé et donné des coups de pied, toujours un garçon solitaire
Pushed around and kicked around, always a lonely boy
Tu étais celui dont ils parlaient en ville pendant qu'ils te rabaissaient
You were the one that they'd talk about around town as they put you down
Et aussi fort qu'ils essaieraient, ils te blesseraient pour te faire pleurer
And as hard as they would try they'd hurt to make you cry
Mais tu n'as jamais pleuré devant eux, juste pour ton âme
But you never cried to them, just to your soul
Non, tu n' as jamais pleuré devant eux, juste pour ton âme
No, you never cried to them, just to your soul
Fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez (pleurant à votre âme)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (crying to your soul)
Fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez (pleurant à votre âme)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (crying to your soul)
Fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez, éloignez-vous, fuyez (pleurant à votre âme)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (crying to your soul)
Fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir, fuir
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Pleure, garçon, pleure
Cry, boy, cry
Pleure, garçon, pleure
Cry, boy, cry
...
