    Thank you so much for highlighting this study! I am a massage therapist who worked saw 6 pts a day in a small unventilated room since May 2020 without catching covid. I took a couple class while in initial lockdown where I learned the importance of vitamin D. They also showed how zinc, curcumin, egcg and other nutrients could bind with ACE2 receptors and help block covid or at least reduce symptoms. This was all taught with the caveat that it was to help us protect ourselves "just until vaccines became available" of course, but When I read the trial data in the BMJ and saw that the Shots were only only going to be able to lower or prevent symptoms themselves I realized I would rather stick with the safer option of the vitamin D et cetera protocol. It may be of interest that I am also obese, over 50 years old, and already have an autoimmune disease and yetI have confirmed with antibody tests twice over the last few years that I have never contracted covid. All this time however I am scoffed at when I try to encourage people to raise their vitamin D levels even if they get the vaccine just to be extra safe. I am so thankful for people like you speaking up on this matter because maybe people will listen now.

      I’ve been taking vitamin D daily since 2015. I was diagnosed with MS in 2008 and didn’t start treatments, because I was doing well and couldn’t deal with injection side effects. Around 2014, I started getting weird symptoms of immune stress, like my hair was falling out, skin lesions, etc. I couldn’t work anymore because of the fatigue, so I spent my days researching things that could help me. I came across a study on vitamin D, similar to what he promotes here and had docs test my levels. Almost non-existent. So I began supplementing immediately. It took a few months, but I did start to feel better and hair started growing back and my skin cleared up. So I’ve supplemented religiously since. I have been following the rona since late November 2019, when I watched some TH-cam videos on “flu in China”. Then when an optometrist noted it by messaging his colleagues on their message system, then suddenly disappeared, then couldn’t find the original videos I had watched on “a flu circulating China” as they’d been removed, then the doc resurfaced with a retraction to his statement made to colleagues, then ended up in ICU with the rona and passed away; I was deeply suspicious. To say the least. I told anyone that would listen about it, and all I got were eye rolls and “yeah yeah yeahs”, even my family told me I was taking it too seriously. So I upped my vitamin D levels, started excavating for a garden, stockpiling supplies and just lived my life. People wouldn’t even acknowledge that I warned them to be ready & that this was coming long before our government shut everyone down in the US. Sometimes, frequent worriers should be headed. I couldn’t have made a difference on a national scale, but I could’ve made one within my locality, if people had only listened.

    Having lived in Israel, I might comment on this remark in the paper: "The prevalence of the deficiency in Israel is similar to the prevalence found in less sunny regions." There is a reason for that. Israeli winters are its rain season, often dark and cloudy. Israelis don't get much sun then. Summers are extremely hot and dry. Except at the beaches, Israelis avoid it. Not much sun then either. I know. I did much the same. Once, hiking along a highway, I found myself crossing and recrossing the road to get a few moments of shade under trees. Conclusion: A sunny country does not guarantee high Vitamin D levels. What matters is how much time people spend in the sun.

    Thank You, Doctor John! I'm here in the States and, thanks to you, Dr. Michael Cohen, Dr. Peter McCullough and Dr Roger Seheult, I got myself and my husband on 4K IUs of Vitamin D, K, and Zinc, along with Vitamin C. For years I've been told by my doctor my Vit D levels are slightly low. I think this meant below 20ng/mL since this STILL seems to be the recommended level. We both just got our vitamin D levels checked. Mine was 54.6ng/mL and my husband's was 46.8ng/mL. I was over the moon with the double dose of good news! I am so grateful for finding you and the others in the sea of misinformation and mixed messages. You each have offered such practical, timely, and vital information on prophylactic and early treatment of COVID for us. Between all of you I had a sound set of tools and resources to manage COVID early for best outcomes: Vitamin D, K, C, Zinc, sleep, hot and cold therapy, and nasal washing and gargling. I had it last month. It was like a bad cold. But I felt so empowered with my "COVID toolbox". In time ALL of you, and the rest of the doctors who committed themselves to saving lives, and sharing life-saving information will be on the right side of history! Thank you for all you do, AND for making complicated things easier to understand. You're the best! I'm a subscriber for life!💕

      I disagree about this last insinuation. The idea that all governments - liberal and conservative, drug makers and non-drug makers - are all colluding to keep people from knowing the super secret is really quite absurd. Boris Johnson wanted to keep everything open. So did Trump. Do you really think they would have kept this secret so that it could benefit drug companies? I don't. And by the way, Dr Fauci also told everyone in America that he takes Vitamin D in a nationally televised interview long ago. There is no conspiracy here.I do think the Israeli study was interesting but I was disappointed that Dr Campbell did not address some of the methodological criticisms that have been made about it.

      At 2:04, in the general population 77.5% of women and 79.2% of men are vitamin D deficient.
      At 8:47, 87.4% of patients with severe or critical disease had less than 20 ng/mL.
      So basically 77.5% - 79.2% of the population make up 87.4% of those with severe to critical disease while 20.8% - 22.5% of the population make up 12.6%.
      So about 88.15% -> 20.8% of severe illness while 21.15% -> 12.6% of severe illness. 12.6*88.15/21.15/20.8 = 2.52
      This means that increasing your Vitamin D reduces your risk of severe illness by a factor of 2.52, or by around 60.4%.
      The vaccines reduce your risk by 90-95%.

      There’s an article somewhere on google about a small uk study that found that people who have had many common colds in their life had a tendency to not catch covid despite being exposed . They said that’s because some common colds are also types of corona virus and thus likely provide some immunity . That could also be a factor along with vit D’s immune boosting properties . In the winter I take two 1000 IUs of D per day: The day they announced the first lockdown in 2020 i rode a crowded bus but didn’t get sick.
      Though I tend to catch every cold there is. As soon as I went to my first family gathering this past Christmas I caught a doozie of a cold from my cousin who caught it from his toddler grand kids ( I tested negative twice 2 days apart on rapid test). • @OlJackBurton
      @OlJackBurton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The Japanese get more vitamin K2, but they tend to shun the sun, especially women. They eat more fish, but probably not enough (you would need to at least one serving every day and specifically fatty fish, and even more specifically salmon if it was only one serving; almost any other type of fish would require 2 to 3 or many more daily servings) to significantly raise vitamin D levels to adequate or higher, especially in the winter or fall. I'm not aware that there is much mandatory vitamin D fortification/supplementation in many of their foods like in Sweden. The Japanese are much less obese as a nation, so they require less vitamin D since there is less fatty tissue to distribute it to...

    • @arnesteinarson3645
      @arnesteinarson3645 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Japan is one of the few countries that does not have soaring levels of obesity. (Japan has less than 5% while US and UK has 25-40%).
      Also Japan has the oldest population in the world and a country like Brazil is on the younger spectrum of the scale. But Japan is still 18 times lower than Brazil in covid deaths per 100 000 population.
      All countries hit hard by covid has soaring levels of obesity and low levels of Vit D.
      Japan (and Korea) have very low death rates - showing that age (by itself) is not such a deciding factor. (I would say number of years lived in an unhealthy way adds up risk).

      Japanese people DON'T work outside. What is Campbell ranting about? Japan has a sophisticated, advanced econony and they work at computer terminals, just like we do. • @andersbonde2593
      @andersbonde2593 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kathydent2116, I don't think he mentioned anywhere that the Japanese tend to work or stay outdoors. However, he definitely did mention that the Japanese eat a lot of fermented food and fish, which is good for K2 and to some extent for D. The Japanese do not have a lot of skin pigmentation, yet Japan is fairly far south by North European standards, so they are likely to naturally generate quite a lot of vitamin D.

      @@ebouwens I am sure that’s a possibility though my experience of Israel is that people on the whole are pretty active physically and get outdoors because of better weather more than we do. Of course the problem with extreme heat and sun could be that you then shy away from it and/or cover up . I believe it likely that modesty may have played a part in the fact that the Israeli Arab population and ultra Orthodox population suffered more from Covid there. Be careful of the public transport system, buses and trains may look tidy but they are covered in germs, stay out of cinemas and crowded places in winter. Sydney gets cold in winter - recognise sick people / yourself , on a cold dark night as people travel back home you'll see most people rugged up , amongst them you'll see some striding along, coat open/ wearing little clothing - they hot and sick. People that perpetually wear shorts winter or summer are often carriers.

    When Dr. Seheult said that metabolized Vitamin D is a hormone and that High Fructose Corn Syrup directly de-activated metabolized Vitamin D, It was like a light turning on for me.! I think it could help explain the massive obesity, diabetes , and high blood pressure issues with populations that consume large amounts of HFCS. If most of the food you ate and drank had HFCS in it, it would seem logical that you could be vitamin D deficient, if HFCS directly de-activated metabolized Vitamin D. When I took my 6yr old to er @103.6 they either couldn't or wouldn't test us. They said " it's viral, but she's breathing. Go home and stay there."

      At 4000iu you are still likely insufficiently dosing. If we are supposed to have between 40-60ng/ml then you will never get that at 4000iu. For example 40ng/ml=1.6iu/ml. If you have an average of 5L of blood in your body then you need 8000iu/day. You are at 20ng/ml. You can get a more precise estimate of your blood volume through online calculators. My volume is estimated at 6.2L. I need 9920iu/day just to be at 40ng/ml.

    Thanks John. The advice to be careful about Vitamin D deficiency has been consistent over the last couple of years, so it's good to hear recent confirmatory research. And it is certainly surprising that public advice about this has not been routinely given.
    I'm puzzled and annoyed, however, to find Vitamin D levels reported in guidelines and papers in two different ways. The Israeli paper, and your talk, use nanograms per millilitre (ng/mL), whereas here in Australia the measure reported is usually nanomoles per Litre (nmol/L). It's irritating that it is necessary to convert between these, but it is fortunately easy:
    To convert ng/mL to nmol/L, multiply by 2.5.
    To convert nmol/L to ng/mL, divide by 2.5.
    E.g., 30 ng/mL is 75 nmol/L.
    I hope that helps others.

  • @harmagician1
    @harmagician1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    Dr. Campbell. Thanks for your lucid and informative videos during the pandemic. I am a medical researcher in the US. I've done some research into how VitD stimulates the immune system. You and your readers might find these 2 issues interesting.
    1. Vit D’s effects on Innate Immunity: Macrophages
    Innate immunity is the body’s first line of defense against pathogens. In this first line of defense there are immune cells called macrophages that seek out and destroy pathogens. These macrophages have what are called toll-like receptors (TLR) that are activated by pathogens. When a viral pathogen enters the body it triggers the TLRs in the macrophages which sends a signal to the rest of the immune system that a virus is present and needs to be eliminated.
    Vitamin D 1,25(OH)2D levels play a crucial role in the development of pathogen recognition receptors (toll-like receptors or TLR mentioned above) which are responsible for recognizing a virus. When adequate levels of 1,25(OH)2D are present, there are more TLRs and the innate immune system is more adept at recognizing the presence of pathogens. If 1,25(OH)2D levels are too low, recognition by TLRs is slowed thus delaying the immune response (below) and allowing viral pathogens to "slip under the radar" so to speak and mass produce.
    The presence of 1,25(OH)2D has also been shown to increase the number of microbe-fighting macrophages by inducing monocytes (a type of white blood cell) to differentiate and form into macrophages. More macrophages means more destroyed viruses. Also, 1,25(OH)2D is believed to increase phagocytosis (microbe-eating activity) in macrophages though the production of lysosomal enzymes.
    2. Vit D’s effects on virus-destroying peptides: AMPs
    When the toll-like receptor (TLR) cells have been activated, they trigger the body's macrophages to produce the enzyme know as 1-alpha-hydroxylase (or CYP 27B). This enzyme converts 25(OH)D into active 1,25(OH)2D which in turn activates the macrophage Vitamin D receptor (VDR) which, together with the retinoid X receptor, creates small DNA sequences known as Vitamin D response elements (VDREs). These VDREs produce a series of molecular interactions that prompt genes to produce antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that destroy viruses. The AMPs are the body's ammunition for destroying pathogens. The production of AMPs by the macrophages takes place in a matter of a few minutes. If there is sufficient 1,25(OH)2D in the body, adequate amounts of AMPs can be produced to minimize viral replication. If 1,25(OH)2D levels are low, the production of adequate AMPs is delayed thus allowing pathogens time to mass produce. An example of an AMP produced by microphages is Cathelicidin (LL-37). Cathelicidin is a destroyer of bacteria and enveloped viruses. It is believed to destroy many viruses by breaking down their protective envelopes thus rendering them defenseless.
    It is interesting to note that macrophages do not stockpile 1,25(OH)2D. They produce an enzyme called CYP 24 that quickly breaks down excess 1,25(OH)2D to prevent toxic buildup in the cell. This means that macrophages rely on current blood serum levels of 25(OH)D for activating a strong immune response against pathogens. Fortunately, 25(OH)D has a fairly long half-life, about 12-19 days. It takes about 12-19 days for the body to break down at least half of the serum 15(OH)D. In practical terms this means that someone would have to stop taking D3 for at least 2 weeks before serum 25(OH)D blood levels started falling.
