    Great video! I can agree with everything said. I used braided for years thinking its the best of the best, but truly not the case after years of fishing the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. The elasticity is great with mono and I have lost several fish due to them darting under coral or a shipwreck with braided. I love the series.

    I had never tried braid until very recently. I was amazed how much further it casts! I fish from the shoreline of lakes in Pennsylvania with jigs and crank baits. For me, the added casting distance is what appeals to me about braid. I decided to back the spool about halfway with some monofilament to offset the cost of the braid. So far, so good. I about to put some 6lb braid on a vintage Penn 722 backed with a thick rubbery flyfishing line because I think that will work best on the plastic spool. I’m new to this and still experimenting but overall for lakeshore fishing mainly for bass and panfish braid seems like an obvious win.

    I have heard from a few people to keep a small lip balm tube in your tackle bag, if you get a wind knot to smear some on the knot before you pull on the braid and most of the time it will slip undone.

    Before using braid on any fishing pole, make sure the eyes wont be cut by the braid. I've used Mono for both fresh and salt and I've never had a problem. I only use Ande Mono line, on all my reels. I've tried braid and it just does not cast as far, or maybe I'm not using enough weight.

    • @situationreview
      @situationreview 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need a better / less than a junk rod... Braid does not cut unless - 1. You use it in salty... and don't clean it. or 2. the rod is now heading toward the junk yard.
      Braid lets you know immediately as soon as a fish snaps, while a mono may not...

    Great video as usual. Good comparison of both as well. Only thing for me is the line capacity. Being a freshwater fisherman (not casting more that 50 feet usually) I have no need for double the capacity. I personally have become a fan of Flouro. But you are 100% right on Braid and pulling hooks out of fish's mouths. I have watched Crappie fisherman fishing 10lb braid and losing fish constantly due to ripping the hook out. Anyways like I said great video and always very informative! looking forward to the next one.

It occurs to me that a wire leader, maybe even a very short wire leader, might be very helpful to prevent break offs. Could you provide a short video on when to use wire leaders and when not to use wire leaders? I think that'd be very helpful. And if I missed one you've already done please direct me to it. Up here in the great lakes (trolling for salmon and steelhead) we use mono on down riggers because braid likes to slip out of the rubber gator clips off the ball, and braid is used on slack lines more or less, like using lead core and copper wire line, and dipsy divers we use spiderwire stealth. All leaders are mono or flouro though as it gives a bit of a shock effect.

    I personally disagree on the cast ability of braid, as a bass fisherman I prefer the cast of mono. larger diameter so better control on a bait caster, plus ive always found it more difficult to prevent blow ups with braid when fishing light soft plastics. I do prefer braid for heavy rigs like an Alabama though, or large soft plastics like the Osprey baits.

    I dont think i agree with the strength. Ive used 50# mono forever. I switched to 40# braid and that stuff breaks like 12 # mono. I have to use 80-100# braid to get the same affect as 50# mono. Now it is true you can get a lot more line on the reel with braid but i do not believe is equal in strength.

    Viktor ... you should have also included KNOTS .... mono is more open to more knots and 'simple', where as Braided lines are limited to only a few that work properly and are generally 'more complicated' .. so Mono would win that one .........

    I try to keep it really simple; most of the time I fish for bream and I use a rig with a running sinker that is allowed to run right onto the hook.
    Here is the rub; bream fishing usually costs you a lot of terminal tackle. There are snags and rocky bottoms and these are the best spots for catching the fish.
    I want to be able to tie my line onto the hook directly. I am told that I can't do this with braid, that I need a mono leader.
    This complicates my rig. I would need a new knot in the line to connect the leader to mainline.
    Apparently braid requires new knots - my old favourites won't do.
    This is something I wish this otherwise excellent clip had touched on; braid doesn't knot so well (so I am told).
    Anyway, I scare easily. And like many folk I am very resistant to change.
    My son is a keen braid user and he carries a special tool for cutting the line. Huh? Teeth won't do?
    Ahggggggg!!!

    • @dct581
      @dct581 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Braid holds a knot much better than any mono. It is thinner and "sinks into itself." However, I understand your position. I like and have had great success using braid for its strength, then tying to a swivel, then using a couple feet of fluro or mono as a leader. IMHO, you get the best of both worlds. The strength of the braid and the stretch of mono/fluro. I use this setup if I'm fishing fresh or salt water.

Good luck and hope it helped you out.

    I completely respect the braid and have a use for it on occasion, but the things that I do not like are when you are using braid and fishing next to someone with mono and lines cross. If you're the one with the fish and you're the one with the mono, bye-bye fish. Many boats do not allow braid to be used so people do not cut off other people's fish. Yet another issue with braid is when you get stuck on the bottom or with anything else, that usually means a very difficult task of breaking it off and leads to either cutting it off I'm losing a lot of line and money or cutting your fingers. I completely understand the love for braid and the use that it brings, but for me it's cold polymer and fluorocarbon leaders.

    My question is, and I seem to be running into problems with....is it effective to cast and crank with braided line? All the videos I see when people are using braided line when they're reeling in their fish you can actually hear the sound of the line against the pole. If I'm casting a deep runner in heavy current is it making that noise as im reeling in the rapala?

    • @HyperFaultic
      @HyperFaultic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok so here’s the thing, using straight braid for casting (in my opinion) is a bad idea for conventional reels. If you backlash, you will burn your braid and have to change it more. And yes it runs against your guides when reeling in (if you have crappy guides it can start to crack ceramics or degrade them in general). What I do in California (Bc that’s where I live) I always do about 75-120yards of mono topshot. I fish 40lb mono topshot, and 80lb braid typically for casted. Just give it a try and figure out what you like, I do this Bc I fish from piers in cali for thresher sharks, and this works fine for it.

I thought maybe the line was not tight enough around the spool, so I took it off and respond it tighter and after a few uses the line does it again. Was wondering if you had any problems like this or suggested how to fix it

    • @mulletmaster2392
      @mulletmaster2392 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you go to tie your braid to the spool, leave a long tag end and lay it along the spool and wind on the first several wraps over that tag end, this will help the line grip. Doesn’t need to be neat and perfect, you just want the first several wraps of line to be in contact with that tag end. And when you spool up the reel do it under a decent amount of tension.

    • @tango-bravo
      @tango-bravo ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same problem recently with braid on a shallow plastic spool for a Mitchell 300. I thought I had lost the drag washers or something as the whole reel of braid was spinning on the spool. I decided to take off the braid and fill the spool halfway with mono and then the rest of the way with the braid. So far so good. I think the mono just sticks better somehow, especially on a plastic spool.

    best braid is more abraision resistant than best mono with same diameter and if you take one moment, it's no reason to don't take braid with the same diameter than mono cause you have the same line capicity and with the same diameter and 50% of the lines is cutted on a rock, the mono will probably break, but the braid after that abraision have the same or more breaking power than the mono before it hits the rock. topshot is an different thing,but even their a very thick braid can be better if you don't need stiffness and stretch. cheers

    Should mention tangles mono much easier to untangle but more likely to spring off a spinning reel if it's new

    What’s the difference between test and mono

  • @manuelscherrer9956

    Mono, especially for the weaker of us has another good thing! With they'r stretch they eat a lot of the energie of the fisch. The fish is faster exousted and you are not as fast.
    Oh he mentioned it seems like im not needed here. 😔

    I suspect that abrasion is a function of line diameter, not lb.s test. Can you do a practical test based on line diameter ?

    I was told that I should use braid for wahoo, and mono might stretch and over a little time, will break. Is that true?

    • @nissan_6828
      @nissan_6828 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThePrimeGameProtector Braid lasts longer, you might need to change out mono a little bit. But it should do some time.

  • @cjharrin

    Great video! Fishing braid youll have less line issues but land less fish. Mono you’ll replace regularly lose cast distance but pull less hooks = land more fish.
    Ide never run straight braid or mono though. Braid to mono leader gives you cast distance without getting spooled plus flexibility on landing fish.

    • @nissan_6828

      Johnmervin Ancheta You mean as in, those won't corrode/damage the line as quick. Mono is more abrasion ressistant - so, yeah.
