Caught a 5.5 pounder after work today. Not on my Mule gear but it was on ultralight (4 lb leader) with a Zman Microfinesse TRD Ned rig. That's my first bass over 3lbs on ultralight. It's only relevant here because Ethan is the reason the Ned rig works for me.
Spent a Saturday 2 weeks ago wearing out the dinks and nice gills with my brother pond fishing. They were digging the 1/16 ounce Beetle Spin on the old 6# Cabela's copolymer line for my brother and the 6' light Bass Pro Bionic Blade rod. It's my older panfish jig rod but has the butt end weight system so fish all day and no fatigue. I broke in the new Lews Speed Stik Laser Light and 500 series reel. I went with 5# Power Pro and it's working out well. Small swim jigs, Beetle Spin and casting jigs it's really nice in the 5'6 one piece. Nice budget friendly combo. Putting the Spro Braid into the memory bank for future purchase though. Power Pro has been good to me, jury is still out on the bargain Reaction Tackle braided line. Haven't tried anything but 6# micro for now. Blessings Ethan, sorry the perch have to unload on you. They're saying you started it 😅😂😅😂😅 🎣
Surprised you have had a lot of wind knots, but it is good to know that you have also had random breaks. So weird! Let me know your thoughts if you try this line. I really have enjoyed it.
Getting ready for ul creek fishing in Washington opens in 2 weeks so stoked I'll definitely have to give this stuff a try I usually use j braid in the 6lb neon green. I'll report back if I'm switching.
Thanks for the tip on the spro! Wish I lived closer would definitely scoop that Kage rod up. Some nice size perch! Thanks for the video and enjoy your supper!
Thanks David! I believe another local viewer is actually going to scoop up the Kage, so I’m happy it will be put to good use. Hope you’re having a nice spring!
Fireline Nanofil specifically has that wire-like stiffness. I experienced the same thing and returned my spools to Tackle Warehouse. Fireline and Fireline Crystal aren't wire-like but they do have a flatter shape than a multi-strand braid.
I need to play around more with the various Berkley options. The Fireline ultra 8 carrier was what I used and I felt it had way too much memory for ultralight fishing
You mentioned Phenix rods.... I would also recommend Turners Outdoors California CTX Trout rods the rod blanks are made by Phenix and IMO the rod seat is more comfortable.
Ethan buddy, if you find Berkley Fireline Crystal on sale I suggest giving it a try. It's extruded solid superline, so there's no fraying of multiple strands when you trim it. Likewise, as a solid piece of line it's much more ABRASION RESISTANT than traditional braid. For fishing Great Lakes boat harbors inundated with zebra mussels, this is a HUGE PLUS. Another feature is that it's supposed to be translucent underwater. It seems slightly translucent underwater, but it is a very visible milky white above water, so I'd call it hi-viz. Moreover, the 6lb and 8lb test are the same diameter as comparable multi-strand braid, meaning it's THIN, and probably hard for fish to see even if it's only slightly translucent. I always use a fluorocarbon leader. I even grabbed some 4lb test Fireline Crystal for ice fishing, but I didn't get to try it out this winter. As you know, traditional braid absorbs some water, which is problematic when air temps are below freezing. Fireline Crystal seems to alleviate that problem. Ethan buddy, if you ever try Fireline Crystal in a video shout me out.👍🏻
I like Spro for lure making parts 😅! I make hand carved fishing lures and some spinner baits and tail spinners For them my favorite ball bearing swivel to use for them are the spro swivels
When I first started using J braid ,I found that it frayed. I only use Power Pro. Pouring a little fresh water over it has helped before the first cast seems to loosen it up.
Do you use standard power pro or the super 8 slick stuff? I have found that standard power pro is stiffer than j braid or spro finesse braid and doesn't cast quite as effectively.
Thanks for this line recommendation! Respooled my ultralight combo with the pink Finesse Braid 8x 6#. Wow! No offense to the Berkley people but don't think I will be going back to Fireline anytime soon!
Man i dont know if your video flooded the market for the SPRO 8x lol but i cannot find the 6lb anywhere! Super great video, great pointers for running braid on ultralite

Always love your content. I've personally have not been impressed with the build quality of the Phenix rods but to each their own.... Take a look at the Megabass Kirisame. It's pricey but absolutely gorgeous and is the most impressive ultralight rod I've ever had.
I’ve heard a lot of folks say they swear by the Phenix so I have to at least try it. That Megabass is probably insane! But I don’t think I’m quite to the point where I want to drop 5 hundy on a rod. One of these days!
@Fish Anything completely understand! I did just receive the Piscifun Carbon X II 1000 sized spinning reel and taking it out tomorrow to try. I'm hoping it's a good performing reel due to its lightweight of 5.5oz. The Vanford 1000 is a great reel but costs about $180 more. I'm starting to finally change my ways and put the bulk of my $$ into the rod and get a lesser expensive reel especially with all the great options that are on the market under $100.
Next rod to try must be the phenix dragonfly, I think for the fishing you do the 8’ would be best since the 9’ is more of a light than an ultralight. The 9’ is my favorite steelhead and salmon rod tho
I've always used cheap braid. On my UL combos I use 6lb braid from Calamus and Reaction Tackle. I've had some of it spooled for two to three years and I've never had a single issue out of it. The color fades a bit after a few months, but that does nothing for performance. It's never once broken on me, and I also don't have any problems with wind knots or anything else of the sort. I don't think I've ever spent more than $10 on a roll of braid for my UL stuff. The only thing I don't like about braid that light is it's a royal pain trying to retie a leader when it's windy. Pink is a color I haven't tried before. Color is largely the reason I use braid, I can't see mono most of the time. I'll have to check out pink the next time I'm shopping for braid. Nice perch yogurt. 🤣
Perch yogurt lmao 😷 So I agree that some of the more cost effective braids are fine to use for most applications, but the reason I like these higher end products for ultralight fishing is due to the type of gear I prefer to throw. When fishing sub-1/32oz lures, the lower priced braids typically don’t cast near as far in my experience. The j braid or spro are much smoother lines with lesser memory so they handle tiny presentations well. If you primarily fish 1/16oz and up, you’re probably just fine with the slightly lower tier lines. Just some of my thoughts from my experiences though!
@@FishAnything I regularly throw the Northland Tackle Mimic Minnow Fry 1/32 and Joe's Flies unweighted (no clue on the weight of these things, incredibly lightweight). While I don't get bombing casts with those, I can still definitely fish them, even sitting in a low kayak. I'd love to be able to try out some higher end gear, but I simply can't afford it. So I have to make work what I can.
Haha that is certainly not my goal! I’m actually trying to help folks save money by picking up the right gear from the start, as opposed to getting something they don’t like and having to buy more.

Hey Ethan was you using straight braid or a leader? If so what knot do you use for your connection on this small diameter line? Great vid as always. 👊👍
Thanks Samuel! I always run a leader - I totally should have mentioned that. This was 4lb Yo Zuri Hybrid and I always tie a Double Uni Knot. Very simple and effective.
@@FishAnything yeah we dont get a lot of great fishing stuff here in the states it sucks. I just orsered a couple of the spro finesse braid cant wait for it.

Hey Duane! That sounds like a blast! I will definitely be up for a kayak flathead trip this summer. I tend to fish weekends but I can also take a Friday off if it works out.
I've got a new Revo X 20 size I've been looking to find a good rod for. I would buy that rod from you. We do need to meet up sometime soon. I've been doing pretty well on a few lakes and ponds around here.
Let’s fish this weekend or next? And I actually have another local who asked about the rod so I’m gonna honor his offer first. If he decides he doesn’t want it, I’ll hit you up! Honestly, I’ve got some others I could part with too so just lmk if any specific setups ever interest you. When we fish, you can always try any of my rods out too. Sharing is caring 🤠
Hey I love your content, I'm a huge fan of ultralight fishing for any species and I am your newest sub! I got linked to you from watching another channel "Creek Fishing Adventures". Question though, Do you tie braid directly to the jigs/lures, or use a leader?
Thanks so much for stopping by, Gabe! I always tie about a 6-foot leader of 4lb copolymer when I fish 6lb braid. I like Trilene Sensation or Yo Zuri Hybrid. And Creek Fishing Adventures is one of the best channels around :)
I probably missed it, but can you tell me when you use braid with UL, do you go braid straight to hook or use mono or fluoro leader? I worry that the knot will slow down the cast going through the small guides and that hi vis braid with scare the fish. I need his vis due to poor vision. Thanks. Your videos are awesome. Love the small fishing. UL spinning 4# test and when fly fishing use short 1-2 weights.
As long as the rod company makes them quality, I don't see a major issue using a 2piece rod. For example, my Dobyns is 2 piece and it is unnoticeable. The only time I don't like a multipiece rod is when it either makes the rod noticeably heavier or if the parts shift while fishing and your guides don't stay in line.
Lol they are probably all made on the same production line.. Who knows?! I am always very curious about how much overlap these companies have with their suppliers.
Hi! I enjoy your videos allot! Greetings from Monterrey Mexico, I would like to know which line has more sensibility for a Medium Shakespeare and a Ultra light Shakespeare which they are my favorite rods I have
I tried it once and personally did not like it. In my experience, there are other brands that outperform it. J Braid & Spro top my list, but Sufix 832 and Power Pro are both good too.
@@calebprice304 I like 6lb braid to a 4lb copoloymer line such as Trilene Sensation or Yo Zuri Hybrid. Copolymer seems to work really well for ultralight.
@@FishAnything Eathan thank you for eveything. I have learned so much for you and your videos. I love your products and have caught so much fish from then. The longevity of the baits is crazy. Caught a lot of fish on a horse fly and haven’t had to change it. Thank you God bless
Have you ever used the eurotackle braid? I kind of want some for my budget BFS setup but I have a hard time convincing myself to spend $30 on a spool of braid lol As for the $$$ ultralight rods, I’m eyeballing a 6’10” Shimano Poison Adrena UL. It’s just that wicked price tag…lol
I put cheap mono on the reel first to serve as backing. I usually just put a full 150-165yd spool of braid on. I wish we had more access to shallow spool reels for this reason. No need for that much line!!
Is there any reason in particular you use Yo Zuri hybrid as a leader over fluorocarbon of the same diameter? Usually, everyone I see online uses a Braid to Fluoro setup or just straight fluorocarbon. I'm a bit curious because I have my Sedona 1000 spooled up with 6lb Pline fluorocarbon and I'm wondering if there would be an advantage to using a copolymer line (Yo Zuri hybrid, Pline Fluoroclear, etc) next time I have to respool? Or to use it as a leader line for braid over fluorocarbon. Anyways, all the best my man!
Great question! If I was bass fishing, I would go with a fluorocarbon. For ultralight, I have had less luck with fluorocarbon. It seems quite brittle when you use 4lb test or lighter. Copolymer has been extremely strong in my experience, and it is very budget friendly. It has enough stretch and abrasion resistance to give the braid a lot of "cushion". It just feels most comfortable for me.
@@FishAnything My experience with lighter fluorocarbon has been about the same. I tried a spool of Seaguar Blue Label 4lb and I could break it apart with my hands. Knots would fail constantly as well. Are you ever worried about line visibility spooking fish when using Copolymer? Especially if you are targeting line sensitive fish, such as trout? You should definitely consider doing a video about your preferred leader materials and connection knots! Thanks for the reply!
I use Suffix 832. I am happy with it. The little lake I fish the most is filled with slot sized bass (13-15") If you go with the Phenix rod, go with the Elixer. Its a fast taper you like. The Mirage is a moderate taper. The Old18 is very nice and has the fast taper. My Old18 is my BFS rod, I don't have a spinning rod from them.
Thanks Michael! That rod intel is helpful! And the Sufix 832 is good stuff but I find it is a bit rougher feeling and slightly more memory. Seems to cut down on casting distance on ultralight lures in my opinion. Nothing wrong with it for a bit heavier lures though, I like using it for crappie presentations.
Dumb question since I just started using high vis braided line: Do you need a mono/flouro leader or does the high vis not affect bites? I feel like I’ve complicated my set up by going braided
I am personally not a big fan of Spiderwire from my experience. Maybe I will give it another try someday though. For a leader, I usually keep around 5-6 feet or so. But I will fish them down to 2 or 3 feet before I tie a new one on.
I’ve used a few varieties. Definitely nice line, but I have found their lineup to be a bit confusing. I’m a simple man, and I felt it was a bit over-complicated 😂
QUESTION: I own a Tatula LT 2000 Spinning Reel which holds 8/280 J-Braid but I'm wanting to put SPRO 6lb braid, do I load two 150 yard spools? And if so how?
Definitely don't load two spools as that would be a waste of money. I would recommend putting some cheap mono on as a backing, then doing a small connection knot to fill the 150 yard spool.
@@garethmorris2042 P line cxx in the moss green color is great, it’s super tough and the knots hold up super well. And the moss green blends in well with a lot of waters. Izorline xxx and platinum are also equally fantastic.
@@FishAnything Have you ever tried fishing with the 2lb S.O.S copolymer? I'm looking for a line for my daughters rod and it is hard to find a 4lb let alone a 2lb in my city for either a copolymer or braid. The S.O.S line seems to get decent reviews and the 2lb is available on amazon. Thx
I have a video on it actually. I have mixed feelings on it. It is obviously very thin and casts pretty well, but it is very "wirey" and has some memory issues. I don't like that for micro presentations. Does fine for slightly heavier heads though!
What knot do you use to tie your braid to leader I’ve been using double uni is that okay ? I just got some finesse braid and spooled it up and wanna know what the best leader knot is for UL
@Randall Reeves You can put a strip of electrical tape around your spool to hold the braid so you can start reeling it on there. Backing it works too but looks like it would be kind of a pain on an ultralight reel.
I always put a little cheap mono as backing behind braid to ensure it doesn't slip. Also, a reel often holds more than enough line so I don't want to overspool with braid.
Cool video, but I think you're confused about what stiff braid pitfalls are vs soft braid pitfalls. A stiffer braid is not going to wrap your top, it's stiffer and wants to stay straight. A softer limp line will wrap your tip more. Thx
I've never really fished ultralight, what knot are you tying your leader to braid? I use a double uni for higher diameter stuff. Anyway, just curious. Love your videos, getting me through my work week! 😎👍🏻
Sorry for the delay! I use a double uni knot and never have issues. I am told the FG knot works well on larger diameter lines but I have never had issues with the double uni for the smaller lines that I use.
@FishAnything No need to be sorry at all, thank you for the response! Thank you as well for your videos, you make ultralight fishing look like such a blast. I just bought my first UL rod! Also some jigs, plastics and a sticker from Mule 👊🏻😎
🎣 that first fish you had caught with that line should have destroyed that line or even broken it with its sharp teeth. You could tell that line is good, I would use the pink color too. It'd be great to use on cancer awareness day. matter fact August 14th of 2023 it will be 3 years our mother died from brain cancer. Anyway a perfectly well job done on catching those fish with that awesome line. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@FishAnything I'm an FG knot guy but lately i've found myself to be using the double uni because its quicker and surprisingly holds up. No break offs. Not sure why i never tried it in the first place. 🤔

@@FishAnything it’s everything you said it is l love it
I've got a new Revo X 20 size I've been looking to find a good rod for.
I use about a 6’ leader of 4lb copolymer and have no issues with the connection knot through the guides. Lmk how else I can help!
I hear good things about spro line. I will try some next time I run out. What are your thoughts on one piece vs 2 piece ultra light rods?
As long as the rod company makes them quality, I don't see a major issue using a 2piece rod. For example, my Dobyns is 2 piece and it is unnoticeable. The only time I don't like a multipiece rod is when it either makes the rod noticeably heavier or if the parts shift while fishing and your guides don't stay in line.
Sunline defier d braid is also pink, and also expensive....wonder if it's the same.
Shimano pitbull 8+ is also pink and I prefer it way more than D-braid. Only hassle is you have to buy it from overseas.
Lol they are probably all made on the same production line.. Who knows?! I am always very curious about how much overlap these companies have with their suppliers.
@@jacobkramer1089 I'll look around for a spool to try out. I ordered some of the Spro as well. What do you like about the pitbull 8+?
Dang! I just got some Jbraid the other day! Just a bit too soon haha.
J-Braid is nice, on the 6lb range (maximum I will consider UL) even Aliexpress braid works.
I wouldn’t be upset, I still use J Braid a ton. They are very similar honestly!
Hi! I enjoy your videos allot! Greetings from Monterrey Mexico, I would like to know which line has more sensibility for a Medium Shakespeare and a Ultra light Shakespeare which they are my favorite rods I have
For a Medium, I’d go 10lb or 15lb braid. For a ultralight, I’d go 4-6lb braid!
My favorite ultra lite set ups that I have are ugly stiks
I have a few I plan to try soon!
Have you ever tried spider wire? Heard they make nice braid
I tried it once and personally did not like it. In my experience, there are other brands that outperform it. J Braid & Spro top my list, but Sufix 832 and Power Pro are both good too.
My braided line on my 6’0 pole looks like old yk, plus it doesn’t cast far as my 5’6 mono set up does 🤷♂️idk why
I like the spider wire x8 aqua color 6lbs and don’t really have any issues you should try it. ASLO do you use a leader or braid strait to the jig
I will have to try that someday. I didn't like standard spiderwire but I have not tried their X8. And I always run a leader with a double uni knot.
@@FishAnything what lbs leader and mono or fluorocarbon line
@@calebprice304 I like 6lb braid to a 4lb copoloymer line such as Trilene Sensation or Yo Zuri Hybrid. Copolymer seems to work really well for ultralight.
@@FishAnything Eathan thank you for eveything. I have learned so much for you and your videos. I love your products and have caught so much fish from then. The longevity of the baits is crazy. Caught a lot of fish on a horse fly and haven’t had to change it. Thank you God bless
Have you ever used the eurotackle braid? I kind of want some for my budget BFS setup but I have a hard time convincing myself to spend $30 on a spool of braid lol
As for the $$$ ultralight rods, I’m eyeballing a 6’10” Shimano Poison Adrena UL. It’s just that wicked price tag…lol
Oooooh that rod would be awesome. And I haven’t tried the ET yet; maybe someday!
Have you tried Fins Wind tamer?
I have not but I will have to look into it!
Is it better than 5lb phonix ironfeather braid..?
I have some of that which I have yet to spool up. Once I get a chance to test it, I’ll do more videos sharing my thoughts.
have you tried Daiwa Morethan 12x?
I haven’t but I’ll look into it!
Hey Ethan, how much line are you spooling up on your sedano 1000? The spro braid in 6lb is thin like 2lb mono so around 270yards?
I always use a leader. Usually about 6 feet of copolymer!
What is your thoughts on the Spiderwire braid? How long of a leader do you run on your braid rigs?
I am personally not a big fan of Spiderwire from my experience. Maybe I will give it another try someday though. For a leader, I usually keep around 5-6 feet or so. But I will fish them down to 2 or 3 feet before I tie a new one on.
Have you checked out Varivas yet?
I’ve used a few varieties. Definitely nice line, but I have found their lineup to be a bit confusing. I’m a simple man, and I felt it was a bit over-complicated 😂
@@FishAnything Yeah they have crazy variations for their trout lines. A ton of stuff to chose from.
Do you typically use a fluorocarbon leader to the braid or just straight braid given the small diameter? Thanks,
Always tie a double uni knot with about 6’ of 4lb copolymer
@@FishAnything thanks for the note. Any brand of copolymer you would recommend?
@@garethmorris2042
P line cxx in the moss green color is great, it’s super tough and the knots hold up super well.
Thx
How many yards of mono do you use as a backer on the 1000 Sedona in order to use the full 164yds of spro braid?
Just enough to get good full coverage on the spool
Have you tried Nano fil braided line? If yes, what do you think?
I have a video on it actually. I have mixed feelings on it. It is obviously very thin and casts pretty well, but it is very "wirey" and has some memory issues. I don't like that for micro presentations. Does fine for slightly heavier heads though!
What knot do you use to tie your braid to leader I’ve been using double uni is that okay ? I just got some finesse braid and spooled it up and wanna know what the best leader knot is for UL
I always do a double uni and it works great for me!
This line is now sold-out in 6 and 8 lb in both colors dang near everywhere. 😂
I don’t think I can take credit for that lol
Do you use a leader with this line if so what type of knot and type of leader do you use thanks
I like 4lb copolymer. I usually tie about 6 feet of it via double uni knot.
Do you tie directly or use a leader?
I always use a leader, usually about 6’ of 4lb copolymer.
Do you run backing (if so whats your backing) or do the electric tape
I just use cheap mono usually!
Do you spool a little mono or fluorocarbon first? I have seen that braid is hard to spool
Thx
How long of a leader do you usually use with your braid?
Usually about 6 feet or so
If fishing off sea wall/bank where that waters for 20+ deep do you recommend braid or fluorocarbon?
I still like braid in pretty much all depths. I would rather modify my weight than my line personally.
@@FishAnythingthank you for this!
What canoe are you using?
Old Town Discovery Solo 119
Have you tried any KastKing Braid?
No I haven’t yet. Maybe someday!
I've never really fished ultralight, what knot are you tying your leader to braid? I use a double uni for higher diameter stuff. Anyway, just curious. Love your videos, getting me through my work week! 😎👍🏻
I use the fg knot for my setup.
I use the double-uni for tying my braid to mono. But I’m experimenting with 2 lb mono, no braid.
Cool, thank you both!
Hellooo from my canoooe *Mrs Doubtfire voice
Haha I love that movie
Did you say it comes in green 💚💚💚😂😂😂
Yesssssir!
As my long gone grandpa would say, "just lip it".
😂
🔥🎣
🤠👊🏽
31$ 💫😵💫 good ol' mono it is! 😂
Haha yeah it isn't cheap. Absolutely nothing wrong with going the mono route. I like Trilene Sensation copolymer. Right around $10 for 330 yards.
@@FishAnything have to give that a try and see if its worth the mark up, thanks for the tip!
🎣 that first fish you had caught with that line should have destroyed that line or even broken it with its sharp teeth. You could tell that line is good,
I would use the pink color too.
It'd be great to use on cancer awareness day. matter fact August 14th of 2023 it will be 3 years our mother died from brain cancer. Anyway a perfectly well job done on catching those fish with that awesome line.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Shawn! Yeah, that’s a great point about the pink line. I’m sure that is really hard, I hope you’re hanging in there. Cancer sucks :(
@@FishAnything you're very welcome and I
Thank you as well. Yeah cancer does stink but there's nothing we can do about.
New video, let’s goooooo!!
👊🏽🤠👊🏽
💯🔥💙👍
Tight lines :)
Are you left or right handed
Right handed. I cast with right and prefer to reel with right. Just how I learned.
@@FishAnything I am right handed also and I use my right hand to reel. Just curious because most reel companies have the reel on the left side
Have been killing the crappie spawn in ky with the purple jig heads.
Love it! Happy to hear you are having a good time :)
Those purple jigs are sexy. Caught my first rockos of the year today on a rodeo clown burro bug with a 1/32oz purple mule jig.
Not so sure if he’s using a leader on his braid
I was using about 6 feet of Yo Zuri Hybrid 4lb test with a double uni knot.
#DinkMaster #SpringOrBust
Thanks for watching :D
No not a fluke... Definitely a perch.
Lol I see what you did there
too bad they dont send to overseas
Dang! You might try reaching out to Spro UK. I believe they have a Eurpoean division.
18 minutes? Needs to be more like 5 minutes.
Ethan what knot do you like to use with this braid to connect to fluoro or mono?
I go with a simple double uni knot
@@FishAnything I'm an FG knot guy but lately i've found myself to be using the double uni because its quicker and surprisingly holds up. No break offs. Not sure why i never tried it in the first place. 🤔
