baldi’s did it right tbh. it came out with a perfect storm of concepts: it was funny, scary, weird all that. perfectly captured the 90s educational game vibe and that was it. it didn’t get turned into a franchise like a lot of people were conditioned to expect after stuff like fnaf. glad it existed.
He tried turning it into a bigger IP years later when the gears slowed down.

It's honestly funny because Baldi's Basic was a parody game that was so good that most people can't detect the satire it has in it.

Honestly, I gotta give props to the man. He never gave out big promises (The Day Before), he never chased for popularity (Hello Neighbour), he just made a game and f*cked with it so hard he stayed loyal to it, and on top of that he even kept a "classic" version to gice the fans the game they initially loved in case they might not appreacitate the road the game took. Baldi's might've lost it's initial rush, but it showed how a game with pure passiom behind it can have it's place in the gaming world. Ngl I might come back to Baldi's thanks to this video, I just appreacite the guy's constant care and passion for a funny game with 90's graphics and goofy voices
And at least you can tell he’s aiming to have it released when everything is polished. This game would probably be out far before Yandare Simulator would
As a fan of the game to today: You absolutely should.

Baldi’s Basics and Tattletail are two series that didn’t over stay their welcome like fnaf and hello neighbor did. They deserve to be remembered, but they do NOT need sequels!
I LOVED Tattletail when it came out. It actually got me into Furby collecting (which I havent gotten far into.) It was a great game that I like to come back to every Christmas.
OH HELL YEAH, man tattletail is iconic, too bad it didn't have as good of a run as BBIEAL
FNaF didn't overstay its welcome, it more so overcame it. It takes a certain kind of person like Scott to be as good a marketer and game developer while still giving the people who are interested a right amount of fan service with a pinch of relevant memery. And at the same time collaborating with companies for both marketing and game developing while still being as popular as FNaF is. Meanwhile Hello Neighbor was just on their knees begging for any sort of clout they could get, being incredibly pathetic in how they wanted to market their game.
Fnaf and Hello Neighbor in the same sentence is crazy but ok
@@Plush13.S fr hello neighbor is leagues above
This game is so nostalgic for me. I didn't actually play it (because I didn't have it), but I would watch COUNTLESS videos on some of my favorite TH-camrs play it normally, with mods, and also busting myths. I also watched comic dubs and gacha videos about it a lot, and I'm pretty sure I also tried to draw Baldi at some point (it did NOT look good lol). I was especially obsessed with it during quarantine, because I had pretty much nothing else to do at the time. I honestly still love the game though, it just captures the kind of 90s look so well, and it should really be brought back to popularity.
Also the music is weirdly good and the characters are great, especially Gotta Sweep.
the game is free (not plus)
well I didn't know that back then, but thanks for telling me@@brinleyhamer729
This game was the game that gave me PTSD for a while of a ruler hitting anything making that slapping noise.
I’ve personally been keeping up with baldi’s basics this whole time purely because of how funny the core concept is to me. most horror involves the protagonist having a deep narrative connection to the killer/location, or if they don’t have one before they develop it over the course of the game/movie/book/whatever. which is to say “you are a FIRST GRADER who SUCKS AT MATH so your TEACHER tries to KILL YOU” is both not a standard horror concept and completely hilarious. I think it much better resembles an actual nightmare a real first grader might have than a carefully crafted story a horror author would put together
tbh same it reminds me of a fucked up nightmare ihad a wee lad ((used to play similar flash games, one was this cats and dogs one))
You know, this actually fits quite well. I remember as a kid discovering “pron” for the first time, and keeping it secret. Eventually saw those fake ads saying your phone was hacked and you had to pay a fine, which were absolutely terrifying. I once got one that actually was really bad; it not only prevented me from opening anything else in safari, but had an active countdown for 24hrs before charging me 2000$ because of some reason that sounded scary. I somehow thought my entire life was over if I couldn’t get rid of it lol.
@@weewoo5486when I was little I repeatedly had nightmares about a game where I made a cute pet character in like a flash game typa thingy, but once I finished making it I was sucked into the game and the pet chased me down and killed me
There's this horror game revolved around trying to not get caught by a hulking lunch lady like that
I played a game about snakes when I was little and ever since then I've had a recurring nightmare where there's snakes lining the fence line of my house and there's an albino one that slowly looks at me, then my house turns to snakes and they all stare at me, but if I go to run into my house (because the house is made of snakes but the inside isn't yet), the snakes chase me inside and all turn into one snake but not really one snake bc they teleport kinda, and chase me around the inside of my house, but it's not the inside of my house, it's the inside of a log cabin in a Hispanic country that has a race going on as a wedding tradition? But if I join the race it turns to snakes and I wake up before I can get any further.
The only time I ever lucid dream is at the end when I realize I'm asleep before getting sucked out of the dream.
Games can fuck children up, man. Still have that nightmare at least once every two months.
Gunna be honest, I think main reason it did fall off is because it DIDN'T follow the "hidden lore" thing. Look at most of popular horror / horror-esk indie games, they all were pushing some kind of lore and thats what people were interested in, not just indie horror itself. Look what hello neighbor did, they tried to fish matpat and destroyed their game trying to do it even though it was popular for a short while. But others like poppys playtime, banban, my friendly neighborhood, iron lung, bendy, happys humble burger farm all were either hinting at lore you gotta look for or implemented it. To make it more interesting. While I enjoyed watching and playing baldi, it was just a game, felt more like a speedrunning game than horror or stealth or whatever its suppose to be. Just felt like an indie game with a retro twist.
But hey, at least now it's a hidden gem and not a surface dirt.
Well, [PT] (a game that was supposed to enter development around 2016) and main focus of my channel, has a lot of hidden lore, the difference being:
1) It's not forced unlike those previous cases
2) It feels natural because it's part of the game world
3) The lore was already written by myself a lot of time ago, a big turnoff in games, is that often people make them without a lore behind it, which causes said lore to not feel comfortable in the game world (a.k.a world building), take for example hello neighbor.....
The lore must be written first, and then the game should be built upon it.
If you do the opposite, it will feel unnatural.
one of those is not like the other. banban is a shit game
That's interesting cause the main reason I used to like Baldi back then was *because* it didn't have any weird lore I had to care about. Just a fun game to pick up and play whenever.
Honestly it's for the best. Convoluted stories just for the sake of driving engagement through theory videos is one of the things burning people out on mascot horror anyway. It was essentially a parody edutainment game with some unsettling elements first and foremost. Like I love long form content as much as the next guy but I'd rather have a game that knew it didn't have much to say than try to act like it did.
I remember when this game first exploded back in 2018. I had no idea about sone of the things that inspired the look, so it’s nice to hear the backstory on the game’s initial development.
I never fully forgot the game though, as it always stuck firmly in my head.
i never forgot about this game because i still actively listen to the fan song by the living tombstone

Basics in behaviour?
i’m pretty sure null’s weird speech and why he says it’ll “get corrupted” was because one of the school rules was no fourth wall breaks, so he had to word his speech strangely. little detail i noticed
this would’ve been a lot easier to tell if this dude did more research on this game. There’s a lot of extra info that would’ve been nice but this just a nitpick.
Also fun fact: People have theorized that Null (aka FileName2) actually interrupts Baldi in the sequence in which you get all the notebook and yells “GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN”, it is actually Null telling YOU to exit the game before it’s too late.

Well as a person part of the Baldi’s Basics community that-despite how long the games been around-is still decently thriving, I wouldn’t say EVERYONE forgot the game. Nonetheless, the game IS still a “trend game”, so people outside of its community likely have forgotten about it.

I never really thought about Baldi's Basics, but after seeing this video, I think I'm gonna give mike my regards and respect. Being a solo developer is such a draining task no matter what you do. and I can still see the passion in his work all these years later. As far as I'm concerned, He can take as long as he needs, as long as he's enjoying what he is doing.
"Forget" is a strong word here, like Slenderman, this game is still part of my brain it just not part of my routine daily thought process, but if I were to actually forget I will be like "Oh... what is this game again? I do recognize it.... Hmmm.... Uhhhh.... OHHH IT'S BALDI!" so, no.
Yeah the implication is a little strange. Like, no one forgot it, it's just old enough to be out of the every day talk cycle. Things aren't forgotten just because people aren't talking about them every day
@@Torvinoid things are forgotten when nobody talks about them anymore, because they eventually become so obscure than nobody is even alive to remember them and search for them, if they still online.
Popular games (yes, this thing was popular) like this are just popular for the memes, so its easier for people to forget about them, so yeah, baldi and other tiny "horror" games like these will be forgotten, just like hello neighboor, slenderman, or even others like friday night, among us.
Tiny games that become popular because of memes and not because of the quality.
And thats also why indie games like undertale, hollow knight, on the other hand haven't been forgotten, and they stayed as classics.

As a VERY hardcore fan of Baldis Basics, and being part of the community, i cant really blame people for forgetting about the game, it isnt like FNAF and its consistent content coming out every year. And like you said in the video, its understandable why considering the game is made by one person only. Its really surprising to see the game mentioned every once in a while though! Love that this video brought more light to the game.
I defo agree with you I think poppy playtime killed it a bit tbh miss delight reminds me of baldi basic I'm also pretty sure that's what she was based of
The main reason baldi died was because of the competition there was fnaf poppy playtime and bendy and gartan baban took the spotlight for mascot horrer for children and baldi just died it had a lack of story etc I understand why people left it got old just running around the lack of story killed it the most tbh while bendy poppy fnaf all have a good story and great characters baldi doesn't and the kids all left for gartan of ban ban esspacily because the community is small now I mean just check the steam charts when I checked now it had 72 players
It's also not been finished for ages
mystman12 himself stated that he didn't want Baldi to become like most indie games with constant sequels, he just wanted to make a big awesome game.

Thanks
High respect to the creator, thanks for putting this out since it changes my opinion of it a lot, the fact the game on MULTIPLE occasions actively denies the lore shtick that's made games of the style of baldi's rise in popularity even as his game died down purely to retain the integrity of not pretending that his game had some deep lore that he intended from the beginning, and instead choosing to build another one from the ground up that the fans of his work would support while being fully aware that the game's lore is separate, is impressive
While the idea of capitalizing on the idea of watering down an original idea I've made just to make something popular is something I cannot see myself doing, mainly because I've seem many stories I adored absolutely ruin themselves this way, neither can I when it'd be actively going out of my way to say "just saying but, there's not any intended deeper meaning to dig into", since, hey if it gives more engagement and people misunderstood all on their own, better for me
Bro, this video is.. A MASTERPIECE. Like, it was a whoel new experience for my 2024 self to see. It's so nostalgic to remember the fame and popularity Baldi's Basics had like 5-6 years ago.. It wasn't trendy, youtuber bait content. This isn't a slight against Baldi's Basics.
eh, i imagine the game developer in question wouldn't take it too hard. lots of game jam games are just intended to be short, fun little projects, and aren't intended to get much further than that. its less about making the next big hit but instead learning about both yourself and gamedev along the way. funnily enough, most games that started off as game jams but went on to become huge hits also did not win their respective game jams, such as Hollow Knight, Celeste, SUPERHOT, Papers Please, VA11-hall-a, Endoparasitic, etc!

In some cases when a popular game dies down, it always gives off a memorable, nostalgic feeling when you revisit it or it gets a sequel or update years later. I've never personally forgotten this game. Cause, every now and then, I just randomly say; "Gotta... Sweep, sweep, sweep!" Or; "Looks like it's sweepin' time!"

I think the reason why Baldi's Basics haven't caught on quite as much as for example FNAF is because the latter had a huge approach on lore, which lit the creativity fire within certain content creators and community. People are much more impatient for the next installment when there are huge mysteries going on in the background and people want more clues to keep that fire lit.
I think also fnaf never really stop pumping out stuff scott was over here grinding with a new game every year for awhile which kept it kinda fresh in peoples mind
Edit: also most people few fnaf as the origins of mascot horror or atleast mordern mascot horror so it makes sense why its remembered as much
Also it got branded as a kid's game
This video was such a good watch. Haven’t watched a good video I wanted to continue watching in a while. Thank you.
I thought I’d give this video a watch not to remember baldis but more because I was intrigued from the title because baldis was considered unique and iconic to me that I never forgot about it. Hell, I always went back to my fav creators play throughs, I found new creators I enjoy nowadays gameplays on it a genuinely get excited, and if someone hasn’t played it yet I make sure to recommend it. It’s crazy to me that a game I found iconic and unique, was just a nostalgic memory to others.
You provided a lot of lore, background and other things I didn’t even notice and I appreciated that. Loved the insight and hopefully others get a better appreciation for baldis!
My thought would be that people just moved on, like there’s many games nowadays that are way bigger than Baldi we see that are huge hype for a week or a month but die out very quickly due to another new game releasing after it.

Baldi to me will never be forgotten. I remember first playing through the game learning what it was all about, and started to learn a pattern on how to get through the challenges. After a while, I got use to it and had a blast playing the games especially Classic Remastered which is still my favorite in the series. So to this day, I will remember Baldi as one of the things that made me truly learn education while also having fun playing a horror game at the same time.
theres a simple reason. The game was a basic, simple, trendy game, that happend to be popular for a couple of months, but because of the lack of updates, it losing popularity, and losing its fun after like the 10th replay it died down. its really that simple.

It's honestly so refreshing when a video essay is about something going right rather than going horribly wrong, especially when it comes to indie/mascot horror. Admittedly I never really looked at Baldi's much when it was at its peak, but knowing that it was a tongue-in-cheek parody of the types of games popping up at the time and that its creator is minding his own business and working on it over time has given me newfound respect and even interest in its development going forward. I hope Micah is able to succeed and that the full Baldi's game does well, you can tell even as a spoof that it's a labor of love at its core.
@Cicikus-px2by I never found this game scary and I never understood who where scared of it
10:48 DaVinci Resolve user spotted! I've had that happen too, weird bug where it just fails to render an image for a singular frame. Just thought I'd point it out for funsies, amazing video as always! I can consistently watch every upload regardless of how long it takes to go up 💙
8:36 Missing items:
Alarm Clock: Set this up and when the timer rings, Baldi will go to that clock
WD-NoSquee: Can be applied to all doors and when applied, the door won't make any noise when opened and Baldi will not hear it
Safety Scissors: Can be used to cut Playtime's jumprope and 1st Prize's wires
Big Ol' Boots: Used to go pass Gotta Sweep and 1st Prize

I never forgot Baldi's Basics because I first heard of the game late May early June of 2018, which was one of the best summers I've had and I found myself looking back at those times especially during COVID.
The fact the the game is almost six years old is unfathomable.
Baldi made a message 6 years ago on how every horror indie has the same plot points
That message aged better than EARTH ITSELF
Name one recent indie horror game where dead people arent possesing something made to entertain kids (impossible for any mascot horror)
@@DustD.Reaper I mean, do we actually know how they make the children and adults into toys in poppy playtime?

I do admit the mod Raldi’s Crackhouse is a legitimately funny and creative take on Baldi’s Basics with a whole lot of new mechanics and secret boss battles that emulate first person shooters and undertale’s battle mechanics.
i usually hear of indie projects being announced and then never coming out so it's so nice to see that Micah McGonigal has been able to do so much and that he is still going at it even now
There is one last thing that re-confirms Null's dissapearance in remastered and it is tied to an easter egg. Iirc when you get jumpscared by Baldi you have a chance to get a fake error screen that shuts the game. But if you beat Null, see him dissapear and then get that screen in an unrelated run, it will glitch out and show a photo of Null besides a lake, and finally, it shows his head and arms, the limbs he is known for NOT having in his model, just… vanishing, accompanied with an awful scream, the photo slowly deletes, piece by piece, and the game closes. I guess it is Mystman's way to tell us that Null's story ends here….
Also small fun fact: In party style of the remaster, if you use the teleporter AFTER you unleash the glitched red Baldloons, you actually get a new interaction with Null in the office! …which is basically him screaming while his sorroundings dissapear due to the Baldloons (because yes, in remastered, instead of just clogging the schoolhouse second floor, they delete any walls that they touch, there is actually a secret room in the second floor you can only access if any baldloon deletes a wall so you can leave and find it)
please upload a clip of both

Thank you so much minaxa for taking us to this fun and awesome trip about Baldi's Basics. I tip my hat off for ya even tho I'm also *bald*
baldis basics is the reason I am who I am today. I was like ten, role-playing as playtime with my sister while listening to basics in behavior by tlt. that freaking game was so perfect in my eyes. It gave me my love for character creating and roleplaying, and its forever shall lie in a soft warm space in my heart.
Honestly, it’s almost like Tattletail. It started off as a really good game that everyone played, but overtime, it just faded into obscurity.
Baldis Basics is made by one person, so I can understand it’ll take time for the creator to finish his game. While it’s gameplay reminds me of those old educational games, I do admit there could have been better ways to give the players a chance to unlock the secrets.
One perfect example is in the classic BB, by answering all the questions wrong, you go to Baldis office, only to find FileName 2. The more wrong questions you have, the faster Baldi is. It would be better if he stayed at the speed he usually is at when you play the game normally.
Overall, the game is a solid 8/10. Obviously it has its flaws, but it’s still cool.
Kinda like granny or slender man too, good games but the just fell off.
I’m surprised to see few mentions of Granny
i dont think it faded into obscurity, more like it fit snugly into its niche, and people that enjoy the bigger picture that the niche is in find it and join that community. it's much smaller, but it's what happens when something goes viral, one day the high is over, it takes way too many resources to stay viral for years on end.
Take granny, doors, that charlie the train one, 3008... theyre all still kicking, just not on the mainstream conciousness anymore
Idk it might be because i was part of microscopic communities for the most of my time on the internet, but having a tiny community isnt a death sentence, guys. it doesnt equate to none
Tbf, Baldi's extra boost in speed if you answer all of the questions wrong is temporary.
The thing works like this:
Each notebook has three questions in it, with the third being unanswerable. Answering wrong the third adds to Baldi's Anger Level, which boosts his speed. But answering wrong the first and second ones add to the Temporary Anger Level, which fades with time.
Even though Baldi’s Basics lost popularity quickly, the creator is probably so glad that his game had been a popular hit game for a great amount of time. I’m glad that Baldi’s Basics was popular enough to be remembered at the smallest glance. It proves that even though the game may not be the best horror game to ever be made. It still gained enough popularity for enough time to be recognisable as a great horror game that will go down in the halls of horror game history. Maybe I should list off some of the games that go down with it. (Please note that these are not in any specific order)
Baldi’s Basics in Education and Learning.
Five Nights at Fredyy’s 1, 2, 3, 4, Sister Location, Pizzeria Simulator, UCN, VR, AR. (Not gonna include Security Breach or it’s Ruin DLC, they’re too new and doesn’t capture the original feeling you get playing the older games)
Silent Hill 2. (This one was the best out of the series of Silent Hill games)
Slender: The Eight Pages.
Hello Neighbour.
Tattle Tale.
Emily Wants To Play.
If you have anymore you want me to add, please tell me! 😊
Possibly hello neighbor and tattle tale for the hall of great horror games
Probably Emily Wants to Play
I had no idea about all the new stuff that came after the classic version of the game, so it was great to see all of the hard work that was (and still is) being put into this game. I’ll definitely look into buying the plus version and I look forward to seeing where this game goes in the future. (Btw the creative slump/slower workflow is so real 😭) Thank you for this video! Brought back a lot of memories :)
Getting a baldi’s basic retrospective makes me feel so old, especially since this was during the peak of the indie horror gaming era of the 2010’s with fnaf still ongoing, bendy, tattletail, hello neighbor, etc etc. I’m so fond of this era with all the theory’s and fan songs 🤍

Baldi is the only one of the games that capitalized on FNAF’s success that I genuinely really still enjoy. To me, its self-aware nature and absurd sense of humor are what make it a lot more special to me than something like Bendy, Poppy, or BanBan.
Nah they was actually cooking with Bendy at first but fumbled so hard
tf does this have to do with fnaf
@@Crackedcripple Bendy recovered with the newer game though. Not many indie darlings can say they recovered like that. Fnaf's been a little rocky, I say that as a Fnaf fan, and Poppy (while improving its quality) is still taking major plotpoints and ideas from other franchises.
@@crafterrium8724 FNAF ended up largely being responsible for the mascot horror genre which Baldi's Basics belongs to due to its way of turning something normally innocent and harmless (in this case, edutainment games) and making it scary; and also due to its complicated lore.
It didnt really capitalize on it, it more became a victim of it.
