Idk my friends who are also DT fans bring this song up fairly often as one of their faves. I'd categorize both this and Beneath The Surface as some of their classic rock ballads.
The Lyrics : He seemed no different from the rest Just a healthy normal boy His mama always did her best And he was daddy's pride and joy He learned to walk and talk on time But never cared much to be held And steadily he would decline Into his solitary shell As a boy he was considered somewhat odd Kept to himself most of the time He would daydream in and out of his own world But in every other way he was fine He's a Monday morning lunatic Disturbed from time to time Lost within himself in his solitary shell A temporary catatonic madman on occasion When will he break out of his solitary shell He struggled to get through his day He was helplessly behind He poured himself onto the page Writing for hours at a time As a man he was a danger to himself Fearful and sad most of the time He was drifting in and out of sanity But in every other way he was fine He's a Monday morning lunatic Disturbed from time to time Lost within himself in his solitary shell A momentary maniac with casual delusions When will he be let out of his solitary shell
When I was 13, I just listened to SDOIT, and I was amazed with this masterpiece. Thanks to you I learned English and love composing and listening to prog music. Thank you so much Dream Theater.
This song got my wife into Dream Theater. We used to cry how beautiful it is. Now we have a 3 month old daughter and just go "Holy shit! You think she'll learn to walk and talk on time?! She's not much of a huger! What if.... Crap!".
ah, reminds me of highschool, shorthaired JP, low speed internet, no streaming, i had to order pirated dvds since no one was selling or i didn't know where to find the original one. -love from indonesia-
I identify with this song so hard. This has always been one of my favorites. I feel like it describes me. I feel like Dream Theater is reaching out to me and people like me, and giving all of us who are struggling with mental health issues, a big hug with their music and lyrics ❤
I’ll always appreciate this band for their wide range of styles they can pull off. They don’t just keep to one style and that’s what keeps people interested. Always a favorite
3:36 Jordan more or less gets to define the beat here. And since the song changes tone in that moment anyway, he takes the opportunity to try to bring it down to a more reasonable tempo.
My favorite album from DT. I remember back in college at the time ( 2001) , looking through their website, when someday on News says: “ For immediate release” it was the set list and the title track of SDOIT. Flew back in time! Still remember. Best memories around .
This kind of song is what I miss from DT. I mean DT always puts a few easy listening song in every album. In recent albums, there is no easy listening song at all.
I love this song so much. Six Degrees as a whole was super important to me as I came to terms with my own mental illness, but this is the piece that feels like it's about me. I love it and I will cry-sing every time they play it til I die.
Was about to fall into a dark place again and this was next on my recommendations, gave it a listen and my mood has been elevated quite a bit. I've been a long-time fan of the band and I can't express how amazing they are to me without being late for work... which I should probably get ready for now that I think about it.

As a drummer with more than 23 years of experience, all I can say is that never ever will a drum set sound that good, than with MP, on this stage, on this concert, on this day. Ever.
Me encanta esta canción. Realmente transmite una sensación de paz, sobre todo cuando la escuchas sólo, con los ojos cerrados y pensando cómo se sentirá un niño con autismo. La melodía da a pensar que es internamente feliz.
We autistics certainly do try and craft a safe space and rich inner life that suits us in our own way...but sometimes it is difficult to have it all be compatible with how society works. Families, jobs, etc...we can't escape the fact that we have to sometimes live and survive in everyone elses' world in order to have the means to sustain our own little world with our hobbies and interests. An "impenetrable" solitary shell would mean starvation and death. I need money, and I don't like scamming people, so I have to work, and thus I have to reach my arms out of the shell from time to time through small holes. And always worrying that they hurt my hand when I reach through, but moreso in an interpersonal and emotional sense than physical; I do construction, so I'm hardened to cuts and bruises from work; I'm far more sensitive to social rejection than physical pain. I strongly relate to this song.
first DT song I ever heard. Buddy of mine played it in the car ride home from marching band practice when I was in high school bout 15 years ago.. bought Live at Budokan shortly thereafter and have been hooked ever since
And in the end, the boy just was a girl. At least that is my story, but the song helped me so much coping with my transition. Dream Theater always knew how to reach one's heart,
One of the best major scale keyboard riffs ever with a nice synth song here. I really like JR's live streams he has done. I saw a few when they were actually live. So inspiring to see someone just Jam some cool stuff with improv. This is a good recording of DT though. That paino part is that comes in with the Piezo pickup part is so pirate like. A good song with some interesting lyrics. Also JP looks good with his long hair and that short hair look he had here.🤘

Live at Budokan. One of the greatest concerts ever recorded.
SCORE
One of the best, due to the mind blowing Instrumedley
@@linuslittlefield2112 I love Score, but the Orchestra was kind of sloppy
Score better.
I think Budokan is their greatest concert instrumentally, but it wasn't one of James LaBrie's best days. His voice sounds much stronger on SCORE.
This is my personal favorite DT era. I'm not bashing the others, they're all great, but this is the one that speaks to me the most.
I love 2000-2008
Their last several albums have all been crap. Pretty much everything since Portnoy left.

Just a healthy normal boy

And he was daddy's pride and joy
He learned to walk and talk on time
But never cared much to be held
And steadily he would decline

As a boy he was considered somewhat odd
Kept to himself most of the time
He would daydream in and out of his own world
But in every other way he was fine
He's a Monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself in his solitary shell
A temporary catatonic madman on occasion
When will he break out of his solitary shell
He struggled to get through his day
He was helplessly behind
He poured himself onto the page
Writing for hours at a time
As a man he was a danger to himself
Fearful and sad most of the time
He was drifting in and out of sanity
But in every other way he was fine
He's a Monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself in his solitary shell
A momentary maniac with casual delusions
When will he be let out of his solitary shell

My older brother bought this DVD when I was 14 and that's when I became obsessed with DT music.
Probably their best moment, great songs, different styles, great shows, improvs, they had everything by that time.
Live at Budokan (2004) is probably one of their best concerts.
This song is eerily close to my actual life. Thank you DT, love you guys.

This video's audio is remastered and remixed, I've compared with the DVD version. They're different.
Nah,i think that scenes from new york is their best by far, then marquee and after budokan,it's still a kickass concert
I always thought to my self that JP forgot the notes for the acoustic solo and just improvised on top of it, still magnificent...
Always thought that too. The blank notes strum up and down sounds frustrated.
Apparently he had problems with the double-neck guitar and had to switch right in time for the solo.

Lately, DT uploading their old videos with MP. Is this a sign? 😅
I was just thinking the same thing plus he's on John's new solo album.
And if you pay attention to MP collaborations with several musicians he's using DT logo at his drum kick 😅
No. Portnoy quit DT. Then he dissed them constantly. He's never coming back. Get used to it.
Well if that right, it's a good news😁
MP left ten years ago. Get over it.
