LaBrie sounds great here. I'm not insane for every choice he makes vocally (particularly the over-breathy uber-vibrato thing), but you can't deny his frickin' versatility. Plus he's a good dude. He's good at staying out of the way and not making the band his ego vehicle. No Lead Singer's Disease.
DT is definitely one of the most talented if not the most talented Progressive Metal bands. In my opinion Symphony X is just as talented but in a different way. In my opinion Russel Allen is a much better singer than Labrie. Other bands that are on the level of being the most talented category are Yes and Emerson Lake and Palmer. They are just as talented if not more talented in a whole different way because their approach is not metal.
I have the Live at Budokan 3 disc set from this performance. I absolute believe that it was the best live recording ive ever heard in terms of balancing and harmony. Hard to believe a venue that large can produce such clarity of sound.
9:03 "over the distance We try to make Sense of surviving together While living apart Striving for balance We rise to the challenge Of staying connected In spite of circumstance" This hits different now
Words can not explain how awesome Labrie is in this. Its scary to think at what level he would be at today if he didnt get sick. The man is a legend...the presence...the voice all of that! WOW
Most bands have like one or two members that you go fuck his guitar playing is impeccable or his drumming is amazing. DT you look at every member and its just virtuosity everywhere.
I feel completely hypnotised by La Brie and watching him sing. Sometimes it's difficult to listen to and I feel for him, but then he just blows me away with one of his melodies.

Anthony Grandinetti the reason it sounds off beat is because there's a delay going out to the speakers. If you've ever been to a concert you'd notice this. Since this was a DVD I'm sure they fixed the delay
Dream Theater is impossible. how can 4 guys be so proficient at each instrument and be interested in playing the same kind of music? for decades! it's insane.
I remember buying this album at a Target a few days after its release on a rainy day.. the album matched the atmosphere of that day. Definitely a favorite album from DT. (I also have this DVD and the 5.1 sound is amazing)
Without LaBrie a piece of Dream Theater would be missing. I don't know what you are talking about. He has such an amazing unique voice that wouldn't fit in any other band but Dream Theater.
joe petucci is a monster ....and a great man and..... one of the best guitar players in the world .... i just got a picture with him in a restaurant ..and he was very nice every way ,,,even when his family were there .......that`s a musician..lots of respect.....
Love Dream Theater. Somehow the only DVD I have of them in concert is the Breaking the Fourth Wall concert. Needless to say, as a bass player, it's great to see footage from a concert DVD that I can actually hear John Myung on. His tone here is amazing.
the change of the main guitar riff from the clean reverb'd to the muted crunch at 3:10 - 3:12 is just soo satisfying, especially when you play it yourself!
i think this is one of the best song from dt..and in this song john mhyung become a monster..sometimes we only saw dt from mike portnoy, john petrucci and jordan rudess..but dont forget there is john mhyung who also a god in bass player...miss portnoy..!
those petrucci harmonics amaze me everytime....he's playing so fast and he still has the sensitivity to do those perfectly timed harmonics during the chorus..it's....GODLIKE...
Why is my mind brought to the Edge of Eternity whenever I listen to these guys? The intelligence and emotion of this music is so intense, it's unreal. The source of their inspiration seems inhuman. I LOVE IT!
Short haired Petrucci is the only one, in my eyes. Him with long hair is still as odd for me as it would be to see Myung bald, Jordan with hair, Portnoy in a sweater vest, or LaBrie with the respect he deserves ;)
Wtf. Petrucci with short hair is like a douchebag "raver" from back around then. A short phase that went along with them changing into their upgraded sound. JP is a terminator bear.
The intro is very similar to the intro to In the Name of God. The band have not commented on the resemblance. The lyrics were written by John Petrucci. It is a love song to his wife where he talks about how he misses her and he also speaks of the sacrifices she makes for him as he is a traveling musician. The first verse and first chorus is written from his wife's point of view whilst the second verse and second chorus is written from Petrucci's point of view. When the song really kicks in, it is Petrucci again where he mentions his "Undying Dream" (being a musician and not being able to see her). Some of the lines in this part are shared by he and his wife: 'WE try to make sense of..."
This was the peak DT era since JP switched to Music Man, Since he cut his hair short, Since Kevin Moore left, since James was a beast vocal and since the Tokyo concert.
The set in this concert was uncanny. I won't think there'd be a gig like this that DT will make in the future. All the songs were epic and well played (well, they always play well). The crowd really did enjoy this since JPN is the real Progressive country... Budokan is also a legendary hall in which most bands all over the world aspire to play here even just once and retire afterwards.
I think you mean John Petrucci's...damn his got way too big...and his short hair...wow...forgot how short he had it back then. Don't get me wrong, Ruddess' is tiny too...and a heck of a lot darker...LOL...but JP's...wow that's a beard now.
@kwambo i dont know too much about drumming but i've always been blown away by his playing under a glass moon, the glass prison, take the time, the ytse jam and many more

he's really grown on me, used to hate the vocals in DT but now really love them in some of the songs.
Russell Allen from Symphony X >>>>>>>> James Labrie
Disagree!
tbh he seems depressed in the later years
agreed. good observation
This sir is the most talented band that has ever existed.
yes agree!

Cold
Lying in my bed
Staring into darkness
Lost
I hear footsteps overhead
And my thoughts return
Again
Like a child who's run away
And won't be coming back
Time keeps passing by
As night turns into day
I'm so far away
And so alone
I need to see your face
To keep me sane
To make me whole
Try to stay alive
Until I hear your voice
I'm gonna lose my mind
Someone tell me why
I chose this life
This superficial lie
Constant compromise
Endless sacrifice
Pain
It saddens me to know
The helplessness you feel
Your light
Shines on my soul
While a thousand candles
Burn
Outside this barren room
The rain is pouring down
The emptiness inside
Is growing deeper still
You're so far away
And so alone
You long for love's embrace
To keep you sane
To make you whole
Try to stay alive
Until I hear your voice
I'm gonna lose my mind
Someone tell me why
I chose this life
This superficial lie
Constant compromise
Endless sacrifice
Moments wasted
Isolated
Time escaping
Endless sacrifice
Moments wasted
Isolated
Time escaping
Endless sacrifice
Over the distance
We try to make sense
Of surviving together
While living apart
Striving for balance
We rise to the challenge
Of staying connected
In spite of circumstance
All you've forsaken
And all that you've done
So that I could live out
This undying dream
Won't be forgotten
Or taken for granted
I'll always remember
Your endless sacrifice
Moments wasted
Isolated
Time escaping
Endless sacrifice
Moments wasted
Isolated
Time escaping
Endless sacrifice

99% of the public are musicians as well. They are there for training :)
It's a dream theatre crowd, after all 😂😂😂
Because Dream Theater fans are all trained musicians 😂

yes the dvd sound is soo much better
This song is so damn good. IMO, it's in the top 3 best songs in their entire catalog.
If a news outlet has a jingle like 6:18, I'm positive they're serving 100% facts
This is why Dream Theater are considered to be one of the best Progressive metal bands of all time

I keep coming back to this video. It's been nearly two decades since it was filmed. Unbelievable!
Virtuosity musicians. I like it too much.
the best live concert ever of DT!
My favorite Dream Theater song. Masterpiece!
One of the best and more challenging unisons in music history
I love how at the riff at 7:57, Petrucci, Rudess, and Myung all play the same part.
