Aquarius and Let The Sunshine In are both songs from the 1969 broadway musical HAIR. For context you might want to see the movie of the same name. In fact a lot of songs from HAIR were recorded by various groups and artists, becoming hits.

@@docsmith9915no, the group formed in 1965 and this was released in 1969 and won the Grammy for that year. They had a huge hit in 1967 “Up, Up and Away”, another Grammy winner.

@ They formed as the Versatiles in late 1965, the group changed its name to "the 5th Dimension" by 1966 (before HAIR). I believe their first hit was in 1966, "Go Where Ya Wanna Go". And in 1967 the had "Stoned Soul Picnic".

To add to this, These were the first songs opening the first act in the musical (compared to the orchestrations that usually opened musicals). The whole musical production was considered to be in conjunction with the Vietnam war protests and included themes on sexual freedom and revolution, drug use, pacifism, environmentalism, astrology, and originally included a nude scene, considered very scandalous at the time. Many of the songs throughout the production were inspired by "hippy culture" and probably (even in this day) not appropriate for all audiences. Be aware that the movie version of this musical has some significant departures from the musical, including plot changes and songs removed.

@ yes, the film was made about 10 years later, and by then the energy and hopefulness which existed in the mid 60’s was being depleted and even though the lyrics still were the same, a darker, sadder, more pessimistic outlook was common. When the film came out, the war had more or less ended but now the results of all the war deaths, injuries, medical problems, PTSD complications, drug addiction and struggles to find jobs and housing at home were the fallout from the US participation in the war, without any benefits to show for the sacrifices. The film focused less on the political side of the “peace movement” or the philosophical beliefs and instead focused on the media interpretation of “hippie” lifestyles emphasizing “odd” clothing, wild hairstyles and of course, sex, drugs and rock&roll.

True story. In the 60's, when the 5th Dimension were getting started, Billy Davis Jr, left his wallet in a cab by mistake. The man who next got in the cab found it and contacted Billy and set up a place to meet so the man could give him his wallet back. Billy was so happy he gave the man a ticket to their (The 5th Dmension's) next performance. The man was taken by their talent and then gave Billy 5 tickets to a new Broadway play called 'Hair'. That man was the Producer for the show and that is how the 5th Dimension went on to record Age of Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In. Both songs were performed in the play.

I was a limo driver back in the 90s. The fifthFifth Dimension came to Boise, Idaho, they performed at the famous Morrison Center. I had the privilege of driving them around the entire weekend It was so fun getting to know them personally, the most humble down to earth good people in the entertainment business I’ve ever met. They put on a fantastic concert. Afterwards they wanted to go to a local truck stop and have chicken
Fried steak. I drove them to one of our famous local truck-stops so they had a blast with the impromptu meet and greet with the truck drivers and restaurant employees. Billy Davis, Junior, and Marilyn McCoo, stellar human beings. They may were grateful and kind to everyone. I took Florence to the Boise Towne Square Mall and let her go crazy shopping. She was an absolute hoot to hang out with. All of them are a class act and treated me with dignity and respect, never looked down on me. Love them all. Thank you for reviewing one of my FAV’s. #fifthdimension

"Aquarius" is the opening song of the 1969 rock opera "Hair". "Let The Sunshine In" is the closing song of "Hair". The creators of "Hair" asked the Fifth Dimension to record these 2 songs. I'm not proclaiming to be an expert in Astrology but I do know a few things about it. Aquarius is a beautiful song that ushers in the age of Aquarius. Previously, we have been in the age of Pisces. An age in which a lot was unknown to mankind. The age of Aquarius opened eyes to what was hidden by the age of Pisces. Unfortunately, tho, the words to the Age of Aquarius are all wrong. "When Jupiter aligns with Mars(the angry red planet), that means an all out war because Jupiter is a planet of expansion and abundance. With the moon in the 7th house means no cooperation between the rulers of the world. But it's just a song and a beautiful one at that.

    • @kubbybear5458

It IS NOT a water sign. Many make this mistake because of Aquarius being the water bearer, but those waters are representative of the waters of knowledge, which should be free and flowing to all. Aqua is an air sign--heady and thinking and often stereotyped as weird, but I think mostly misunderstood.
Water signs (pisces, cancer, scorpio) are often described as deep in the feels, which some accuse Aquarians of not having feelings--largely untrue accusation but isn't usually the forefront for us.
Aquarians want justice and understanding for all.

The last 2000 years, we were in theAge of Pisces, which was typified by Belief, Faith and Superstition and harsh judgement. We have just, since 2020, 3ntered the Age of Aquarius, a time when people will become more rational, tolerant and humanity will experience a new Enlightenment and work toward Peace. Pisces is kicking and screaming on her way out, but the Universe is demanding that we live up to the promise of Humanity.

The 5th Dimension were a hugely popular from the 60s and early 70s. Marilyn McCoo lead singer and Billy Davis Jr are married and for over 50 years. Their sound was mainly a smooth harmonious pop sound, there were criticisms that they didn't sound black enough. Yes Marilyn is stunning in the looks department. They have won many Grammy awards

We grew up with increasing prosperity and hope for our country, it's so sad to see so many of our fellow Americans so filled with hate and anger towards anyone who doesn't agree with them. My philosophy is 'my opinion is not more important than yours and yours is not more important than mine'!

"Aquarius" was the opening song in the musical HAIR, which was a HUGE hit because it was basically hippie kids smoking pot and talking about love and peace, and the songs were great. "Let the Sunshine In" was the closing number in the show. The Fifth Dimension put them together into one; they're not otherwise connected. Great song, great group. Love them!

The musical ‘Hair’ gave us so much great music!! I think it was the 1st Broadway musical where everyone on stage was naked. This was all a part of the age of peace&love-the Woodstock generation.Sunshine was metaphoric for love&kindness. Exactly... being positive for a future after a decade (the 1960s) that had great change and turmoil and finally, to have the Vietnam war to end into the early 70s. Hippy vibe still here and colors and hopeful and uplifing and coming together was a theme vs neutral, common and subdued as best not to stand out or labeled especially for men in rural/conservative America and a heavy hand if one does not conform. Also the fast rise of color TV gave shows a reason to go full spectrum.

Always loved the 5th Dimension and especially this song. As to astrological meaning of the Age of Aquarius - we are currently at the end of the Age of Pisces, the fish. I have heard that that is the reason the fish symbol is used to represent Jesus, as the "dawning" of the Age of Pisces is associated with his birth. We are now moving into the Age of Aquarius, which is supposed to be the dawning of the golden age of man, a thousand years of peace and prosperity. An age is determined by where in the sky the sun rises on the vernal equinox. Each age of the zodiac lasts approximately 2156 years. I'm not an astrologer, so don't take this as gospel, just what I've learned over the years.
