Does that mean you don't think that Florence LaRue and Lamonte McLemore, who was the founder of the group, had equally amazing harmonies as well? That would be like saying, "Nothing like the abilities of John Lennon", while not acknowledging the musical talents of Paul McCartney.

As stated elsewhere 'Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine' were two separate numbers from the Broadway musical 'Hair' which opened in April of 1968. Let The Sun Shine was the number for the famous nude scene. Not only did members of the cast spontaneously disrobe, during the four year run of the show the audience also began to participate in taking off their clothes and dancing down the aisles then up and onto the stage.
My Aunt was an usherette at that theater and it did not happen at every performance. I'm sure it made some of the people feel liberated but real freedom has nothing to do with nudity, if it did, porn stars would be the happiest people in the world, and they're actually some of the most pathetic.
All these years I’ve never known these songs were from Hair. Probably because I’ve never seen Hair.
The entire soundtrack from Hair was special.
I worked as stage hand for Hair at the Aquarius Theater in Los Angeles in the mid-70s. You are wrong on several points. First, the nude scene was not during "Let the Sun Shine In", which is the very last song of the show (it was added to make the end more uplifting). The nude scene was during "Where Do I Go" at the close of Act I. It was not spontaneous. It was scripted. Performers were given the option to disrobe or not. A scrim would lift and the nude performers would chant "Beads, power, freedom, happiness". Yes, the audience was encouraged to join the cast on stage, but during the encore when they would reprise "Let the Sun Shine In". Since that number was at the end and the cast was fully clothed, there would be no reason for the audience to disrobe. If there was any audience participation in the nudity it was a regional thing. It never happened on Broadway or in LA. They had enough problems finding venues that would allow the nude scene. Several states banned the entire production and it took a US Supreme Court decision in 1970 to lift them.

Their huge breakout hit was "Up, Up, and Away" which is about riding balloons. It's a major feel good song. Marilyn McCoo (who was the host of Solid Gold in the 80's) was in this band with her future husband Billy Davis Jr. As far as I know they are still married.
They are still married. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year.
Last week Professor of Rock did a video on 'Up, Up and Away' which included clips of his interview with Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. The compared the song to Pharrell Williams' 'Happy'. When I saw the video, I meant to search RSR videos to see if it had been reacted to yet because it is sounds like a song Amber would like.

They're still married. They recently appeared on a reboot of The Waltons, where they sang "Silent Night." Also released a new album last year consisting of Lennon/McCartney songs.
I remember my mother belting along to this song playing on the radio in the car when I was about 5 years old in 1970 (it was released in '67.) Fond memory, I remember her singing along so happily.

This song is an absolute must for any "Hippy-Era" soundtrack.
The 5th Dimension was an absolutely legendary band, featuring the close knit harmonies of 5 incredibly gifted singers, whose voices spanned different styles and genres. Marilyn McCoo had the absolute voice of an angel, and her long time husband Billy Davis Jr is simply one of the greatest Soul singers to ever exist. This band had an infectious joy that really gets the blood pumping in the "Let The Sun Shine In" part of the song.
The Broadway hit "Hair," produced a bunch of great songs covered by various pop groups. The Cowsills killed it on 'Hair," Three Dog Knight's "Easy" is heartbreakingly beautiful, and these voices took Aquarius into the heavens. Marilyn McCoo had such a rare and beautiful soprano.

The Cowsills may have killed on "Hair", but they cut out the verse that was the whole point of the song:

My parents listened to this group - quite surprising, given they didn't own many other contemporary (at the time) R&B/soul albums, but I loved it. I also loved their songs "Up Up and Away", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Wedding Bell Blues", and "One Less Bell To Answer". Nothing like the harmonies of Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo! FYI - This medley was used in the hit musical "Hair".
Did Ya'll know that "Stoned Soul Picnic","Wedding Bell Blues" AND '"Sweet Blindness" AND "Eli's Coming'/Three Dog Night were ALL written by an AMAZING ARTIST named LAURA NYRO!!!! Please check her out! Her Voice was PHENOMENAL!!!! She sadly passed away from uterine cancer at the young age of 49..... KEEP LAURA's Legacy alive!!!

These are songs from the Broadway/touring musical Hair. Aquarius is usually how the show opens, and Let the Sunshine In is how it ends, and the whole show is very interactive with their audience. During the last song they invited audience members up on stage with the cast if they want to go, which I did when the show toured in Toronto in 2011. Bob from Sesame Street also sang Aquarius with some muppets in its first year on tv in 1969 and it was definitely a hippie vibe you'd love.
I went onto the stage when I was 16. That was 50 years ago!
The play was about hippies, the sexual revolution, the war in Viet Nam, the draft and many other topics of the day. I saw it twice.
I saw Hair, early 70s, at the Aquarius Theater with Ted Neely (Jesus Christ Superstar) in the lead.
One of my favorite movies, truly a snapshot of a chaotic time in US history. Also who knew Treat Williams could sing? Has one of the closest depictions of actual basic training I have ever seen in a movie.
Aquarius was long before Hair.
I am 55 years old, and this song was among the most popular. I remember that they played Age of Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In at noon every day on the radio when I was a little kid. I still have the vinyl my brother and sister gave me somewhere stashed away. This song is one of my favorites and makes me think of happier memories. :)
It is hard to appreciate how this pairing of songs captured the whole mood of an era that should have lasted!

They had so many great hits such as "Go Where You Wanna Go", "Up, Up & Away", "Medley: Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", "Wedding Bell Blues", "California Soul", "Workin' On A Groovy Thing", "One Less Bell To Answer", "Never My Love", "(Last Night) I Didn't Get To Sleep at All", "If I Could Reach You", "Love's Lines, Angles & Rhymes", "Living Together, Growing Together" etc.
1966 thru 1973 was the 5th dimensions hey days hit after hit...i too grew up to their music ...born in 1965 so proud to have been of great generation 60s 70s 80s.

So many others have said it, but I'll say it again - Joe Osborn's bass line just COOKS! So many basslines get buried in the mix and you barely notice them. So glad this was prominent in the mix.
The Fifth Dimension had 3 of the biggest songs of the 60's, Up, Up and Away , Stoned Soul Picnic and this one which topped the charts. The also had 4 big hit at the beginning of the 70s with Wedding Bell Blues, One Less Bell to Answer, Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep at All and If I Could Reach You. Although many a female artist have cover the Burt Bacharach classic One Less Bell to Answer , Marilyn McCoo owns the song (she put her stamp on it).

This won “Record Of The Year” at the 1969 Grammy Awards. It was a one of the most played songs on the radio in the 60’s, and still got played all the time in the 70’s. Even though the 5th Dimension didn’t play at Woodstock, this song was considered an anthem of the peace and love movement.
I was 7 when this came out. It was always on the radio. The sound brings me back. Very cool- it DOES sound like those times...

Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In is from the rock musical Hair, which first ran off-Broadway in 1967, and ran on Broadway and West End in 1968. The original cast album was a big seller, and there were several hit covers of songs from the musical, including this one, "Hair" (the title song) by The Cowsills, Good Morning Starshine by Oliver, and Easy to Be Hard by Three Dog Night. It's worth seeking out the tracks from the original cast album, although I should warn you that some of them are pretty raw and hard-hitting in their lyrics. Some of my favorites from that album are Manchester, England; Frank Mills; Three-Five-Zero-Zero; and of course, Aquarius and The Flesh Failures (Let the Sunshine In).
The Fifth Dimension had other big hits with Up-Up and Away; Stoned Soul Picnic; Wedding Bell Blues; One Less Bell to Answer; and (Last Night) I Couldn't Get to Sleep at All. After the group broke up, members Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. continued to perform together, and had a hit with You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show). I've love for you to react to any of these, especially Up-Up and Away.

Marilyn McCoo was Whitney Houston before Whitney Houston. you recognize her voice immediately and know you’re in for a treat. The rest of the group are all top-notch, and of a piece. Their Up, Up and Away album was my second album right after the Beatles. They were a fantastic group.

So after watching the Woodstock movies and ‘To Sir With Love’ you have to add ‘Hair’ to your watchlist, it was originally a musical play, then a movie so lots of great music in it ! and this song features prominently! This was a HUGE hit for them...#1 for 6 weeks in 1969, plus the Grammy for Record of the Year
January 31, 2024, We have recently entered into the "Age of Aquarius" from a Spiritual standpoint. They were singing this song and letting us know what was to come.
It warms my heart to see young people appreciate the sounds of my generation !! I'm 74 and never get tired of this music !!
Speaking of “Hair,” you should add Cheryl Barnes’ version of Easy to Be Hard to your Female Fridays. It’ll knock your socks off. Her voice is so powerful. The fact that she never became a star is mind-boggling.

Amber if you enjoyed the Woodstock concert film, Questlove from the Roots produced a documentary last year about a series of concerts in Harlem that also took place in the summer of 1969. It contains performances from Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Fifth Dimension and Sly and the Family Stone among others. The footage sat unused in a warehouse for over 50 years until Questlove discovered it and made a documentary called Summer of Soul. It is on Hulu, and I think you both would enjoy it immensely.

Watching a good live production of "Hair" really wail on "Let the Sunshine In" is something that burns itself into your brain.
I invite you to explore the culture context of the time that this came out, to further consider how amazing this piece is. America drafted males to fight the Viet Nam War. Some came home. ❤Class of 1975 Class Song: Free Bird-Lynrd Skynrd. I was young when the song "Aquarius" came out, you 2 beautiful peeps are young as we are transitioning out of the Piscean Age and into the Age Of Aquarius. The 5th Dimension and 11 years of Baby Boomers had a particular astrological feature of I thinks it's our 11th house, and Uranus/Aquarius...so this song and how we were as free love and revolutionary has more to do with that feature...Back then we "thought" the Age Of Aquarius was right up on us...but it was quite a long way off...we got a super good head start...and I'm amazed and in love with the movement going on today. Many young today actually have a fun respect for their elder's spirit...and it's paying off in joy...The "Generation Gap" caused a good deal of harshness and hurt...We were still stuck in more tightly controlled info programming .❤

Wow. Being in my 60's, this song really brought back memories. And a feeling of sadness as well. There was so much hopefullness back then and right now in our country there is so much divisiveness and hatred. My prayer is that the younger generation will stand up and give a voice to that peace and love that we are so badly in need of today.

The bass on the "Let the Sunshine In" part is INSANE! Damn that's slick.
Had to look up who it was. It was Joe Osborn, who also played on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel and "Ventura Highway" by America, among a whole lot of others. He was in the Wrecking Crew, who I was sure did the session work on this. Sadly passed away in 2018.
One of the absolute BEST bass lines to come out of the ‘60’s!

@@anitaaviles7203 Yes. Very good. If you're a bass fan, I feel Louis Johnson aka Thunder Thumbs of The Brothers Johnson was the best bassist ever. Check out their hit Stomp. He was so good that Quincy Jones had him play bass on all of Michael Jackson's albums, Off The Wall, Thriller, and he's recorded with some many famous artists-- huge resume. He earned the moniker Thunder Thumbs as it was well known that he often broke the bass strings with his fingers from hitting them so hard. Try to break a bass string; it's extremely difficult. I can't do it.
The Sunshine in has one of the most amazing improve bass lines ever.

Beautiful harmonies and just beautiful voices. You have to remember this was the 60s. We were dealing with Vietnam, Student uprising, women's liberation and the shift from the "picture perfect" 50s. A decade that ended with Woodstock. The moon landing, RFK, MLK Jr assassination. Tumultuous and the music reflects that. My first decade of life was the 60s and it is memorable!! I'm surprised you've never heard this song as it's been in several movies. Interesting story behind this. The group was in NYC and Billy lost his wallet in a cab and a guy found it and gave it back to him and they gave him tickets to their show. After the show, the guy offered them tickets to his show. He was the producer of the Broadway musical Hair. They went and loved Aquarius and wanted to record it and their manager said it had been covered by a lot of artists already and they said not by the 5th dimension. They wanted to do something different with it and their producer suggested combining it with another song from the show Let the Sunshine In. Love this group you have to listen to more of their music.

I’m 74 and lived through these wonderful times and music. Marilyn McCoo (tallest of the two beautiful women) and her husband Billy Davis (lead singer) have been married for 55 years now. “Aquarius” was mysterious and psychedelic and “Let the Sun Shine in” was funky soul. The Fifth Dimention were hugely popular. Amber, you ARE of my generation. You get it! 😊 By the way, Janis Joplin was an immediate hit with all of us back then. We had never heard anyone like her before. You both have great taste in music!

I remember many times sitting on the beach in Santa Monica southern Cal and hearing sounds from the 5th Dimension coming from the parked cars.
They have a GORGEOUS song mainly sung by member Marilyn McCoo called "One Less Bell To Answer", and her vocal performance is so beautiful. I think Amber would love it!

The 5th Dimension was amazingly popular in the late 60s-early 70s. (I say amazingly because they really didn't "fit" into what was the musical trend of the time...harder & harder rock & psychedelia, prog rock, etc) Really great singers tend to succeed, no matter the decade. :-)
It helped that radio wasn't corporatized like it is now and stations were not stuck with playing certain songs and a certain genre. This came out in 1969 and was the #2 song for the year, only bested by The Archies' "Sugar, Sugar". Other musicians rounding out the top 10: Sly and the Family Stone, Temptations, Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Tommy Roe, The Foundations, Tommy James and the Shondells. Looking down the list there is Marvin Gaye, Henry Mancini, Three Dog Night, Creedence Clearwater Revival, etc. It was a good time to listen to radio. I turned 13 in 1969 so I had my radio on all the time.

Jimmy Webb, who was producing The 5th Dimension at the time (and a great songwriter too) issued a simple instruction to Billy Davis Jr. when the group recorded the 'Let the Sunshine In' section: "Take it to church, Billy." That's all he had to say; Davis understood what this meant and responded with great intensity and spontaneity that lifts the song to another level

Jimmy Webb didn’t play a role in Aquarius. This story is true but it was their producer Bones Howe who told Billy to “take it to church”.
He took it to church alright. All the way down the aisle and back right out the door to the street.

This is a medley of two songs from the rock musical Hair, which broke new ground in 1967 in so many ways. Amber would love it; it's the ultimate hippie show - though it's not all uplifting, it's a reflection of the good and bad of the 60s.
My sister and I were watching the movie once and my mother who grew up in the 60's was watching a scene and then said, "you know, looking back on it, hippies were annoying." LOL. She also use to complain that she was never a hippie in the 60s and somehow she ended up with a kid who was more than a hippie than she ever was.
And this song/songs won the Grammy Award in 1969 for Song Of The Year !!
I saw Hair right after leaving the Army in 69. People booed and walk out during the number "Red White Blue and Yellow." It was a very anti war show that illustrated every liberal cause of the day, had a nude scene, and the music was great.

Another song from the play made the Pop charts as well. The title song Hair. The Cowsills covered the song and it went to 2 on the charts. The Cowsills were a family who inspired the 1970s television show The Partridge Family.

The first time I heard this song was the Smothers Brothers show in 1969. I was 10 years old. This song hit me like a heart attack and the message behind it stayed with me to this day. I never tire from this song. Whenever I hear the opening bars, I stop what I’m doing to listen, unless I’m driving, then I pull over.

I'm 72 years old and enjoyed this song when it first came out. I didn't understand the meaning of it till I listened to it when I awakened in 2012 and that's when I understood what the song was saying! That's why they called themselves the 5th Demension!

When I was attending classes in Broadcast Specialist School, at the Defense Information School, located at that time at Ft Ben Harrison, Indiana, from Sep - Nov 1968, during the Vietnam War, this song was very popular and my group chose it as our theme song in our big final project before graduation. We had students from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard, all mixed together in those classes. We were training to be broadcasters for Armed Forces Radio Network, across the globe, and with the sailors, on ships across the world.
This song was pretty much the beginning of the New Age movement. Anyone who has ever seen Good Morning, Vietnam, with Robin Williams, we were training to do that job, to bring music to our troops wherever they were serving.
