I've watched a couple of reaction videos to this song, and you're the first to acknowledge the incredible bass playing on this incredible song. Kudos to you!
That bass was the late, great Joe Osbourne, an esteemed LA session musician and member of The Wrecking Crew - the name given to the A list session musicians for nearly everything that came out of LA in the 1960s and early 70s. In fact, it was Joe Osborne who gave the Carpenters their first shot at recording. Also part of that crew and heard here was Hal Blaine on drums...It's those same guys that you've already heard on TONS of older songs you've heard or reacted to, but never knew it. Carpenters and Captain and Tennille, Mamas and Papas, Beach Boys, ALL those hits of the 60s and 70s that came out of LA had those guys playing on it which is why they're all SO good. There's an awesome documentary for rent on TH-cam and I think Hulu too called The Wrecking Crew that shines the lights on these guys and gives many examples of the stuff they played on. Joe is featured in it, showing how he played that part and then they fade the track in. If you guys ever did movie reactions, that would be a good one, but even if not, still great to watch on your own to get an understanding of how those hits were made back then.
It was Joe Osborne who discovered the Carpenters and had them record in his home studio and introduced them to Herb Alpert, of the Tijuana Brass fame, trumpet player and co-owner of A and M records. Joe also played on Ricky Nelson records in the early 1960's He was in a session at a studio when a songwriter played a tape of Traveling Man to the studio producer. The guy didn't like it. the writer said keep the tape. The guy threw it in the trash. Joe Osborne was out in the hall and heard them playing the tape. He went in and asked it hear it again. The owner said "Hear it? You can have it, fished it out of the trash. Joe took it Ricky Nelson and the studio guys across town. They recorded it, it went to number one. don't mess with Joe he KNEW it was a #1 hit.
For the record, the spelling of Joe's name is Osborn. He played a very early Fender Jazz Bass with flatwound strings, using a pick, as was stated earlier. The bass manufacturer Lakland produced a Joe Osborn signature bass (now known as the 44-60) in Joe's honor late in his life.
Ridding with my Mom in our 1969 Chevrolet built like a tank! The 5th Dimension is playing on the car stereo and She's singing along I would go back in a Heartbeat!
Marilyn McCoo. One of the most beautiful of women ever! And she can sing!! What a combination. She's not quite 80 and is amazing still. Check out her solo, "Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All" As to the group. OMG Perfect harmonies. Powerful voices. Y'all be safe.
These songs Aquarius. Let the Sunshine In were in the musical stage show HAIR. 5th Dimension had many hits with a popular one called Up! Up! and Away. Great era for music.
Yes, in fact Aquarius and Let The Sunshine In are the first and last songs, respectively, of HAIR. To be a bit more precise, Let The Sunshine In isn't a song in and of itself, but it's the closing part of the song "The Flesh Failures", which is the final song of HAIR. But great renditions of the songs by 5th Dimension here.
this song is from the stage musical "hair." a celebration of peace and love. imagine how BEAUTIFUL the world would be RIGHT NOW if we'd embraced this ONE simple, glorious hippie ideal.
Its funny how I still get the same chills now listening to this song as i did listening to it as a child! Billy Davis Jr. takes you to church with his solo part. Awesome song! !
Fortunate enough to have seen the Hair musical twice on stage..still my favorite of all time. This makes me want to find my old soundtrack cd and slip back to the sixties for a while.
For the past forty years and never again will there be music such as this..Its all been done.Grateful I’ve lived to experience it..The future generations are doomed.😌
One of the best things about catching reaction videos with you and others is how proud (cant think of a better word) of the music and musicians and what they had to say and share with all of us then and forever
Back in the late 60's and early 70's, Astrology and interest in horoscopes was of great interest to so many people across America. Books covering the subjects, coffee mugs, wall posters, etc. Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In, from the musical Hair was very popular with The 5th Dimension covering this song. When I was in band class back in Junior High, we played this as an instrumental. I played the Baritone Horn meaning I got to play the bass part of the piece. This song brings back sweet memories.
Really, growing up in the 60s and 70s our society was WAAAY more diverse and understanding and accepting for ALL cultures. Music like this helped bring that UNITY indeed.
I was a 6th grade, 12 year-old Aquarius when this song became a huge radio hit, in '69. You can bet that I loved this song, 'cause it was about the dawning of "my" age, and of course, once I'd seen them perform on tv, I also fell a little bit in love with Marilyn McCoo. She's the taller of the two women.
Righto ,Kevin . I was born about when you were. Class of 76. Yup, Marilyn was hot and they were very ,very cool. I'm glad Travis and Suzy do these . Man cannot live off metal alone. Let's get some Bread and Lobo on . Soft rock is fantastic ,just as AC/DC is .
We entered the Age Of Aquarius in December 2020, The Golden Age. It's always darkest before the dawn 😉👍 Love your videos guys 🥰👊 Love and light to you from Sweden 🙏❤🥰👊✌
Great to see you reacting back to 60s and 70s. Not to say there isn’t good music today, because there is, but 60s 70s and 80s were so special musically.
This song is from the Broadway hit, "Hair." Long hair was one of the many ways we tweens and teens rebeled in those day. I really wanted to see the musical, but my parent said no. That's because there was an infamous, all cast nude scene in it! Now that's ground-breaking freedom of expression!
One of the many hits from the musical "Hair". I absolutely love the same things in this video that you guys do--the clothes, the dancing, the set, everything. This was pretty creative for the era.
I was 5 years old when this song came out. I still remember by watching all the stuff occurring during the late 60's and early 70's with Vietnam War still raging, protesting the war, and racial tensions even after both Kennedys were assassinated: John (1963) and his brother Robert (1968). Young Adults back then were against the status quo of the time. 1969 was the year for Woodstock Festival
I saw the original Broadway musical when I was a freshman in college. I had just started school in New York. I grew up in a small midwestern city. This show sure opened my eyes.
I just discovered you guys this morning & I'm really impressed at your openness to such an incredibly wide array of music - I love that you just let go & let the music take you wherever it leads, no matter what genre. Good music is good music & your reactions to this classic stuff show why it's considered timeless!
One of my favorites from 1969. I was living in Las Vegas when this came out in 1969. They were so awesome. Unfortunately I'm dating myself. I just turned 74 yrs. I love music of all kinds! This group was awesome at that time. So beautiful and graceful! 💖💖💖
One of the hits 5th Dimension recorded was called Wedding Bell Blues. Marylin McCoo was the lead singer for it, and she was singing about Bill Davis, the guy who sang solo in Let The Sunshine In. WBB was about her wishing Bill would ask her to marry him. The result was that he did, and they are happily married to this day.
You should also list to One Less Bell to Answer, Up Up and Away, Wedding Bell Blues, I Didn't get to Sleep at all, Stoned Soul Picnic, and many others.
My song I was born under that sign, and I'm of that generation. In 1969 I was living in New York City (I had moved there from Westport Ct. where I had been an au pair from Denmark) one Sunday I decided to go to Central Park, lo and behold the 5th Dimension was giving a free concert there. The air was so thick with pot, you could just stand there and get high.
These songs 🎵 are from the Broadway Show HAIR... Which became a movie in 1979. Hair was about a small group of Hippies that ripped up their Draft cards and hung/lived in Central Park that meet up with a recruit that came to NY a few days early awaiting his military "appointment". One of my top five movies. You guys would get a kick outta the songs... just remember we weren't offended by as much as the newer generations.
this song is from a broadway play in the late 1960s... the play was about the hippie movement in america, and their belief that we were coming in to an astrological age or love and enlightenment... i think we all can see that never came to being... but, what a beautiful time.. a period of hope and the pursuit of happiness...
We did this in Junior high the next year for the spring choir concert. I was in band on trumpet, played piano, but played some guitar. We had 3 guitar players and a bass player and drummer in addition to a student piano player. The choir danced in the aisles! I demonstrated a facsimile of the correct bass part. The guy on bass had no clue what to do except play the root of the two chords on Let the sunshine. I borrowed his bass and showed him. the kids gathered around and said "shit man, you should play the bass part. I said no, [he's gonna learn it. In two days after I taught him at his house, he nailed it. I;ve never seen a kid so proud of himself. It wasn't exactly like the record but it was funky enough, nd he got all kinds of compliments from the teacher and students...they though he couldn't do it...I became a music teacher. Never EVER give up on a kid....especially your own. Music is not a damned sport...it's an art.
Will never forget being on on a road trip and asking my friend to grab a CD and she laughed seeing this CD in between Black Sabbath, REO , Ted Nugent and the Carpenters! Haha
For "Let the Sun Shine In," the main singer, Billy Davis, couldn't quite get the feel of it until the producer told him to "go to church." Billy clicked right in after that. The song definitely has a gospel feel to it. Funniest thing: that age of Aquarius nonsense wasn't determined by Jupiter aligning with Mars. That happens just about every year, and the moon in the seventh house happens EVERY SINGLE DAY, so that was definitely BS. Like all astrology is, but that's another story.
Add grew Up back in the 60 70s, I'm AOG some people are somebody's website. Or youtube with disrespectful about the music Back then and I was so upset because if this group speak in a single from their heart about let The sun shine They're singing about people hard or so. Cold hatred prejudice when they say, let the sun shine in. They sing about love and war another. This is a gossip R&B. Group to me the song I mean. Excuse me. If you're burning, listen to the lyrics, you will get a full understanding. Because every time I listen to It. My Holy Spirit does moves me. I can listen to the song 24hrs a day. That's how much it touches my heart and break tears to my eyes. Especially when the brother at the end. He has a preacher's voice He has a voice when you and church. And when the pastor is preaching, that's what this brother sounds like and every time he's singing The holy spirit be moving me that's how Power Full, this song is gobless you. I'm glad you guys really like it because i' I I know I do and thank you guys but be a respectfu Because somebody of a broadcast, they don't and it makes me upset. We go to talk about the clothing and the graphic. And everything else about how they made it in a very set to be off. Because that's a error I grew up on. I grew up. Thank you god god bless you
Amazing song. As I understand it, then they were recording it, the "let the sunshine in" part just wasn't working, so they told the lead singer to "preach it, just like church"....well, the rest is history.
This track is great musically & historically. It was entirely the creation of Bones Howe. Aquarius was directly from the musical “Hair” but Bones saw that it alone wasn’t a “hit”. He went and saw ‘Hair’ and realized the song ‘Flesh Failures” could have a more obvious title and become part 2. The Wrecking Crew, named by Loretta Lynn, included Blaine & Knectal & Osbourn, possibly Herb Alpert or his guys on brass, recorded this at Wally Heider’s. Bones gave Joe Osbourn the basic chart and told the musicians to do 24+ loops. Osbourn delivers a freaking Masterclass of Comping, playing 24 subtle but interesting variations of that chart. The tape was flown to Vegas where the 5D were performing. They listened to the tape ONCE, marked the changes and then put down the vocal tracks, one take. The entire outro vocal, over the Bass track, was entirely improvised by Billy, on the spot. Bones knew what he wanted and Joe, Hal, Larry, Marilyn & Billy delivered.
MY FELLOW BROTHERS AND SISTERS ON MOTHER EARTH 🌍 I KNOW THAT THE FUTURE IS BLEAK , BUT BE REST ASSURED THAT WE ARE LEAVING THE 3 DIMENSION OF WAR IGNORANCE DEATH ETC… TOO A HOLE KNEW BETTER LIFE AND ABUNDANCE AND PEACE ☮️ INTO THE 5TH DIMENSION, NOTICE OR FOCUS ON NOVEMBER 11 NOVEMBER THE 11 MONTH ON THE 11 DAY PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE NEED TO GET RID OF EVIL 😈 BEFORE WE GO TO PEACE ☮️ AND HARMONY, HAVE FAITH
Joe Osborn was killin it on the bass and the drummer almighty Hal Blaine kept everything in time. Bones Howe the producer told Billy Davis Jr. to “take it to church” on the second half of the recording. Spent 6 weeks at number 1 on the pop and R&B charts. Huh. Wonder why. You guys should also check out One Less Bell to Answer…
funny, I had the opposite reaction. I was 6 and I hated this song with a passion. I don't know why now that I hear it again. My brothers and sisters sang it to me just make me cry. That's what we did before video games. 😂
For the last season of the biker show Sons of Anarchy, musicians did a kind of rock version of this song. I remember my Mom had this album. She loves it even now😊
You might want to watch the musical, Hair, which features this and many other songs, including the title song, Hair. Gimme a head with hair, long beautiful hair. Shining gleaming, streaming flaxen waxen. Just a tease of the awesome lyrics in that song.
The top-selling song of 1969, that right there is what "groovy" means.
Right on
Mesmerising and pure class! ❤❤

One of the all-time great bass lines-those folks are insane
Flatwound strings and a pick
He fkn rocked

The bass on "Let the Sunshine in" was on another level. Just wow.
A masterclass by Joe Osbourn
I absolutely cannot listen to this without singing along I just have always dug this song ❤️
Ridding with my Mom in our 1969 Chevrolet built like a tank! The 5th Dimension is playing on the car stereo and She's singing along I would go back in a Heartbeat!
Marilyn Mccoo hosted SOLID GOLD

Marilyn McCoo. One of the most beautiful of women ever! And she can sing!! What a combination. She's not quite 80 and is amazing still.

When I hear this song I can’t wipe a smile off my face. Such great memories flood back about this time. I miss AM radio.

If you put nothing but that sick bass line on a loop, I'd listen all day
It’s a main ingredient in a perfect stew of great melody, singing, horn stabs, and overall mojo.
Its funny how I still get the same chills now listening to this song as i did listening to it as a child! Billy Davis Jr. takes you to church with his solo part. Awesome song! !
Love this group and this song. Can't help but move along with the song.
Fortunate enough to have seen the Hair musical twice on stage..still my favorite of all time. This makes me want to find my old soundtrack cd and slip back to the sixties for a while.
Thank you so much! That put such a big smile on my face. Nothing like some 60's love, peace and flower power to brighten your day.
For the past forty years and never again will there be music such as this..Its all been done.Grateful I’ve lived to experience it..The future generations are doomed.😌
Omg this brought back memories. I loved this song as a child. We had the Hair musical album, it was played to death. Still a feel good tune.

Great to see you reacting back to 60s and 70s. Not to say there isn’t good music today, because there is, but 60s 70s and 80s were so special musically.
I remember when this would come on the radio...I was 4-5 years old and getting up and dancing as I sang along.....
It was SOOOO wonderful growing-up with all these fabulous singers---but, NOT so fun as they all pass from us!!
Love y'all's reactions!!! ❤️
It does this old mans heart good to see you kids hear this for the first time and react the same way we did back in the day!! Yup this was our anthem.
This song is from the Broadway hit, "Hair." Long hair was one of the many ways we tweens and teens rebeled in those day. I really wanted to see the musical, but my parent said no. That's because there was an infamous, all cast nude scene in it! Now that's ground-breaking freedom of expression!

Oh take me back to the age of Aquarius! Make love not war. Peace, man. The best of times.
5th Dimension was the greatest. They had the greatest talent, vocal beauty, enjoyable presentation, and total class.
I saw the original Broadway musical when I was a freshman in college. I had just started school in New York. I grew up in a small midwestern city. This show sure opened my eyes.
I love when the end kicks in! No matter what generation heard it, they come alive and can't hold still LOL. Loved your guys' energy.
That Bass line on let the sunshine in can play all day long!!!

Omg such a great song i was a kid in the 70s what a great time it was.
The legend Hal Blaine on drums and one of his finest !
Hair, one of the most successful off-Broadway productions in theatrical history, was billed as "The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical".
One of the hits 5th Dimension recorded was called Wedding Bell Blues. Marylin McCoo was the lead singer for it, and she was singing about Bill Davis, the guy who sang solo in Let The Sunshine In. We need these type of songs again.
Fantastic harmonies and a stellar bass rift by Joe Osborn....RIP
The bass line is amazing.
Great reaction to a wonderful song! Glad you felt the power of this music. 😃
This song was ALL over AM Radio, and it blew my 10yo mind!
You should also list to One Less Bell to Answer, Up Up and Away, Wedding Bell Blues, I Didn't get to Sleep at all, Stoned Soul Picnic, and many others.
Absolutely! Those are essential tracks from this marvelous group.

Yes sir
One of the top ten tunes of all time.
That bass line is so epic!

Best ending to a movie is the use of this song in The 40 Year Old Virgin.
Lol😂
I had that album and 45 when I was 12, Marilyn McCoo is so beautiful and that voice! Now try One Less Bell To Answer.

Music was recorded by "The Wrecking Crew" in Los Angeles. The Badass Bass Player was Joe Osborne.
I remember listening to this on the Recess movie and I am so glad the creators added such iconic songs from this time period.
I've heard these hundreds of times but I actually sat and 'listened' to them a few nights ago. Astonishing ❤❤
Great Reaction Guy's To One Of My All Time Favorite Song's
If this isn’t the coolest thing you’ve seen then you’re not seeing correctly. Fantastic ❤
Best reaction on TH-cam! Thanks guys!
Absolute monster hit #1 for 9 weeks.

Two songs from the 1960’s Rock Hippie Broadway musical “ Hair” that sent on to be a movie!
“peace, love, & happiness” “far out” groovy!
I remember this on the car radio every morning, mom driving me to kindergarten, we loved it.

This was the them song for the Hippy movement and we heard it on the radio at least once a day. Great time to be a teenager..
"THE FIFTH DIMENSION" STARTED BY SINGING IN THEIR CHURCH CHOIR.
Joe Osborn was killin it on the bass and the drummer almighty Hal Blaine kept everything in time. Bones Howe the producer told Billy Davis Jr. to “take it to church” on the second half of the recording. Spent 6 weeks at number 1 on the pop and R&B charts. Huh. Wonder why.

I was only 3 years old when this song came out. I can barely remember when it would come on the radio. I would get up and start dancing!
funny, I had the opposite reaction.
She loves it even now😊
the music is piped in but.....the mikes are live 😉👍
You might want to watch the musical, Hair, which features this and many other songs, including the title song, Hair. Gimme a head with hair, long beautiful hair. Shining gleaming, streaming flaxen waxen. Just a tease of the awesome lyrics in that song.
