Black Pegasus did the same thing with his critique of the B-52's Love Shack! Not everything that is spoken and not sung is rap! People were doing that long before rap! Look at My Fair Lady, which was released in 1964, where Rex Harrison is speaking (not singing) to the music! I know being ignorant of any pre-2020 music is sort of Black Pegaus's whole schtick, but sometimes it's annoying!
"not a good rapper"...while pet shop boys has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Also it is not really a rap song but a pop song at its heart.
@@neillenet291 I understand, though. If you are hearing it in a historical vacuum, you’re going to think it’s bad rap rather than spoken word poetry over a beat. Rap was happening then, but it was not this. Two different genres that had split off just a few years before.
But they talked their way through their 'songs'. Can't sing, and doesn't rap. Amazing how they got away with it for so long! Some folks are easily pleased. Sales alone aren't everything, it's also about ability, originality and influence. Eurythmics sold three quarters as much as PSB and as UK pop/synth duos go, easily as creative and with a wider global appeal and influence.
You are tripping. Get your mind out of rap and enjoy the English Synth track, his soft voice telling a story and the hook, black and white video in London. This is 1986 better than a lot of music today. The whole album is one hit after the other.
He's not rapping, he is just speaking the words in sync with the music. That was their style in their music. Another song you should check out of The Pet Shop Boys which they did with Dusty Springfield is "What Have I Done To Deserve This." This song was another banger for them.
There are a few bands and artists in the 1980s that effectively used speaking lyrics. I think they often used the lack of melodic singing to allow the synth and other instruments to come forward -- it was more about the totality of the sound in the track than being vocals-forward in the way most bands tend to be. There was so much experimentation with instruments and technology to get new sounds that going ham on vocals would have made a song like West End Girls into a cacophony instead of a banger.
Every so often I'm reminded of how one's perceptions are influenced by their lived experiences. I have been listening to (often) and enjoying (thoroughly) this song for 40 years. Not once did it ever occur to me to describe the singing style as rap. And no shade at all to BP, but I never will. And yes, that hook is FIRE!
Literally the forefathers of techno. Electro, and early EDM. These are the guys who basically started the entire night club music scene in the very early 80s . It’s a sin. Domino dancing. And albums full of absolute classics there still producing music to this day and have huge following
When this black Detroit 60's chick first heard this l loved it because it sounds like a song. We danced to in the 60s and although the pet shop boys are English the song sounds so New York city. Love pet shop boys song also the one about let's make lots of money. Also loved the hit they had with Dusty Springfield my blonde blue eyed great soul sister of the 60s .
Pet Shop Boys are ICONIC!!!!! They are amazing. Played Glastonbury - unbelievable. Played together with the Killers (at Glastonbury). Brandon Flowers loves Brit Pop and loved PSBs. Listen to Suburbia, Go West, It's a Sin, What have I done to deserve this with Dusty Springfield, Always on my Mind and so many more mega hits!
Oh, BP!! I have had such a love/hate relationship with you, but have come to enjoy much of your insight and have a lot of respect for your opinions. That being said, you must force yourself to remember that there were centuries of music before rap and there have been decades of music that have co-existed with rap. I totally understand looking at the world through the lens of ones personal experiences, but there is much out there to discover if you widen your view. Keep listening, mi amigo!
Takes me back, this was fresh and super cool in UK, came out of nowhere, remember walking round round town feeling cool with this song in my head, the tall guy, was a music magazine editor and decided he could do better, they have a great catalog of music,
I first heard this song on the radio while riding my bike home from a long day of videogame playing at the local arcade. I immediately called the radio station when I got home to find out who this was.
It was 1985…..and the first hit….it was massive, they are still together making music touring, loads of other hits….my personal favourites by them are….Domino Dancing ….and…Heart…..
One hit wonders? They have tons of hits! I think they made rap before rap existed and made techno before it became fashionable. They were ahead of their time.
Seriously overplaying them. Not even in the top 10 best synth acts in the UK, let alone anything else. In the top 10 most overrated acts in all UK pop music history
You can say whatever you want but they're 100% a one hit wonder band. This song is barely remembered and it's definitely the most famous. It's cool to have a niche band you like but it doesn't make them popular.
This was a massive hit in the dance clubs. Pet Shop Boys have been around since the 80's and just released an album this year. They are amazing and have a very large catalog. Definitely need to check out more!
The West End of London is more posh with theaters, boutiques and luxury hotels. So you've got these high class girls and the lower class boys trying to get with these girls. The lyrics were also inspired by TS Eliot's poem The Waste Land. There's actually two versions of this song by The Pet Shop Boys. They did it originally in 1983 and redid it in 1985. The 1985 is the more popular version, though. The 1983 song had a line "All your stopping, stalling and starting/Who do you think you are, Joe Stalin?", which was removed from the 1985 version.
"What Have I Done to Deserve This?" is a song by English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys and soul singer Dusty Springfield, taken from the duo's second studio album, Actually (1987)
This was a phenomenal introduction to the band on the world stage back in 1986. They dominated the radio and club dj's loved mixing them onto the floor. It only keeps getting better from here as well. Can't wait for you to try What Have I done To Deserve This, Always On My Mind, It's A Sin, West End Girls, Being Boring, Left To My Own Devices...
Imagine me driving my car to work in 1984 and this came on the radio. Nearly crashed my car in pure joy. Straight to the record store to buy the 7” and 12 “ versions and playing them over and over. Classic!
We didn’t understand why we loved it either in the 80s. It just sounded great and we learned the words. They also performed at the UK Olympics opening ceremony I think. Love their sound.
Back then and now I didn't catch or hear it as a rap. I heard it as storytelling. But for some reason I taught you reacted to this already. It's a very 80's video. The shopping malls, the pet shops, the big jackets, the ice cream shops, very very 80's.
So,BP.... you have to remember England/English music was different from American ..but,when MTV played it...instant hit. Catchy and still remember the lyrics from the 80's ..today's my bday- I'm 54!
Love em! This was their MEGA breakout debut single and hit, a hugely popular 80's synth-pop/alternative band! When this first came out, we absolutely lost our minds! Neil Tennant's drab, dead-pan, emo type vocal delivery & demeanor, along with Chris Lowe as his chilled-out sidekick, was all apart of what made Pet Shop sooo freakin appealing! "Opportunities" and "Suburbia" would be my next recommendations.
Suburbia, It's a Sin, Always on my Mind, Domino Dancing, So Hard, Jealousy, Go West, Can you forgive her?, Left to my Own Devices, The Sodom and Gomorrah Show, You only tell me you love me when you're drunk, Home and Dry, Did you see me coming? - all worth checking out. They were chart royalty in the U.K in the 80's and 90's. Still going strong today.
Yesssss I was hoping you were gonna do more of these bands that hit in the 80's !!! You also should look into Depeche Mode , Duran Duran , Thompson Twins , Echo and The Bunnymen , Joy Division , Bauhaus !! The Pet Shop Boys started out into the 80's and they have some cool songs . I love Opportunities ( Let's Make Lot's of Money ) Suburbia and of course this song. The Pet Shop Boys are from the Uk and the group had 2 guys , Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe !!
Neil Tennant was a music journalist. When he gave bad reviews some people would say he can’t do any better. So despite not being a singer, he decided to prove them wrong.
I think their is something about the hook that is full of yearning, longing, and also, it feels musically so unresolved, so that when he ends it with "West End Girls," which so strongly resolves the hanging musical phrase, it feels incredibly satisfying and somehow rings very "true."
As a 70s and 80s child, I think your choice of reaction videos are spot on. I love that you have an open mind and can appreciate. It’s also nice to go through your videos and feel the nostalgia! Thanks for that.
This song is about the gang fights in London in the 80s and its sound truly is something else. They’re quite big as well, definitely not one hit wonders. Their sound is quite unique, even today, 40 years after they started. You should react to their song “Go West”, you’d enjoy it. 😊

Wow, you actually guessed the meaning of the song on the first thought! It is related to the "west end girls" as the uppity class vs the "eastern boys" who are from the "other side of town".
It's East End Boys, not Eastern...The East End of London was the poorer part of London, dominated by the Docks and low standard housing, exacerbated by the Blitzkrieg bombing of WWII...
@RetiredSailor60 left the Navy as an SM3, although my last few months were TAD to the CMAA. I did my first cruise on the USS Newport (LST-1179), right before we put her in mothballs. Went to the USS Ashland (LSD-48), for my last assignment and cruise. Both ships were out of NAB Little Creek.
People on here saying "he's not rapping - he's just talking in a rhythmic style...." that's called rapping. You're just making a distinction without a difference. The reality is though - he's not trying to make a hip-hop song. He's making a pop song. Specifically it's synth-pop aka new-wave; a very popular music in the mid 80s. Just like Michael Jackson wasn't trying to make a rock song with Beat It or Dirty Diana. He doesn't sound like a great rocker. But the songs were fire because they had just enough rock in it to make it walk that narrow line that fused both pop and rock elements.
One hit wonders? It really depends on which crowd you ask. If you were in the popular American crowd probably. If you were in the alternative crowd definitely not! If you listened to the college stations like I did they played many songs by these guys! ❤️😊
Love the Pet Shop Boys… one of my favs was when they did a song with David Bowie…Hallo Spaceboy…B52’s and Blondie all bring me back to being a kid… thanks… 🫶🏻
No one ever accused them of being rappers. Never crossed our minds
Thank you!!
Back in the day, nobody thought he was rapping. I was 18 when this song was released, and it was just British New Wave to us.
Me too, that's how my friends and I thought of them. I do love the bass line in this.
yup!!!
As others have said he's not trying to rap, its just their style.
Exactly. Spoken word has been used in music and song long before rap.

They’re an iconic group, like Depeche Mode, New Order, Erasure, Duran Duran and so much more!!!!

This was one of my favorites in 86-87. LOVED driving my mustang and singing this song at full volume
80’s simply the best
I have seen them live, and, mate, they were unreal. Such a good band.
Oh, you just GOTTA do their song, "It's a Sin"!!
i agree
Are you a Navy veteran?
@@RetiredSailor60 yes, Sir.
@RoGueNavy What was your rate and duty station(s)?
@RetiredSailor60 left the Navy as an SM3, although my last few months were TAD to the CMAA. I did my first cruise on the USS Newport (LST-1179), right before we put her in mothballs. Went to the USS Ashland (LSD-48), for my last assignment and cruise. Both ships were out of NAB Little Creek.
always loved this song it is very old....I think his accent adds to the intrest....great video too
Oh bro, this song was released before rap was ever invented, lol ! This song was a huge hit at discotheques.
Rap is older.
I'm glad you finally made it to this one ... one of my Favorites. I've replayed it 100's of times 🤗
Pet Shop Boys cool smooth music in 80’s
I never thought of this as rapping. He just has a style, this is it.
People on here saying "he's not rapping - he's just talking in a rhythmic style...."
that's called rapping.
Music from the early days of MTV , love the brass in this song 🎵
One hit wonders? It really depends on which crowd you ask. If you were in the popular American crowd probably. If you were in the alternative crowd definitely not! If you listened to the college stations like I did they played many songs by these guys! ❤️😊
Not 1-hit wonders by any measure. 5 top 10 hits in the US. Huge in the UK.
Love the Pet Shop Boys… one of my favs was when they did a song with David Bowie…Hallo Spaceboy…B52’s and Blondie all bring me back to being a kid… thanks… 🫶🏻
