What’s the Marie Antoinette movie about?
Marie-Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) is the beautiful, charming, but naïve youngest daughter of Austria's empress Maria Theresa (Marianne Faithfull). She is selected by her mother to marry her second cousin, the Dauphin of France, Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman), and seal an alliance between the two rival countries. However, their marriage will not go as planned, since Louis XVI doesn’t want to have intercourse with Marie-Antoinette. Thus, she can’t get pregnant, which is a problem. She finds solace in buying lavish gowns and shoes, eating elaborate cakes and pastries, and gambling with her lady friends at cards.
The movie narrates her story as Queen of France, as well as her downfall.

The one thing that makes this scene so strong is that there is no music underneath it.
Excellent observation. It is the silence when she bows her head that is so powerful and more realistic.

The moment she lowers her head on the balcony and the mob falls into complete silence is my favorite scene in the entire film.

They should make a movie about Maria Antoinette‘s daughter Maria Teresa (named after Maria’s mother), she was the only one of Maria and Luis children to survive the revolution. She had a remarkable life, and she was a total badass. Going so far as to organize a (I believe it was) A 10 day standoff with Napoleon. When the standoff concluded Napoleon walked away from it referring to Maria Teresa as “the only man in her family“.
I think that would be a very sad movie. ;-;
It would follow a young girl who lost both her parents in a cruel way, heard her brother being abused by evil people and then had to endure people pretending to be her brother to get money out of her. That is a traumatic life for anyone.
@Gi Gi I do agree that her story should be told. I can not imagine how alone she must have felt however after she was released from prison.
I'm just glad she lived to adulthood, unlike her brother. It always broke my heart hearing of how he was treated (and yes, I'm aware children of the poor had it as bad or worse). That's the worst - how they treated the smaller kids. Guess Marie Therese was lucky she couldn't inherit the throne. Made her less of a threat.

The way Louis shields his family is heartbreaking. Like he's willing to give his life for them.
I don't even think this might be accurate, it's charming and all, but it was said to be that he was spineless and cowardly, had no ambition and didn't even know how to run the country as him and his wife were so disconnected with the people.
That and the fact he doesn't know what to do
He should have gotten his family out of there, even if he wouldn't abandon his place as king. The ignorance of some of these comments.

@@monmothma3358 yes on that exact balcony! after Lafayette kissed her hand, the mob yelled long live the Queen and then they were taken to Paris.
and yes they target the Queen's bedroom! that's why she escaped to the King's bedroom and appeared in the balcony which is in the king's room. (for whatever reason they hated Marie but not the king)

@@chrisbirch4150 at the start they didn't really hate him that much for whatever reason they like him but hated marie so much, but after he said he didn't want parliament royal like england or something where the power rest in the hand of parliament, they began to see him as threat and the final straw was when he attempt to flee france, they completedly lose respect for him

@@mlbp2567 Actually, as time went on and she got older her spending habits decreased. Also, the poverty problem had been there long before she was even BORN. The girls father, the King, also was not properly trained to deal with these problems.

Great film. Here is the moral question of overturning centuries of established monarchy in favor of democracy. It is fraught with moral implications, such as, “is it right to kill these people?”

I personally think Brazil had the right of it. Once the monarchy was sufficiently unpopular, a bunch of military staged a mostly peaceful coup and sent the royal family to Portugal in exile.

@@SanFranDentist94301 Yeah, but after Napoleans abdication, his brother/cousin succeeded him regardless. But tbh, what came after this revolution was not great either, The terror period, followed by the Great Terror period. Most Parisians wanted them gone, but rural folks of France would still want the monarch to stay. France was only political stable after Napolean's coup.

They should have done a better job of feeding and caring for their ppl. Like bowing to the crowd would fix anything.
Louis was technically not 100% at fault for what happened. When he became king, he had simply inherited problems that had gotten worse over the course of a century. He also was not advised by his ministers to fix these problems or had even been taught to properly be a king.
Louis did want to change France for the better.
The bad weather also didn't help the food shortage, but Louis couldn't exactly have controlled that.

I feel pity for them, this scene shows that their suffering was human suffering. But the angry mob swept up and intoxicated with revolution forgot this. A sad moment in time when a people destroy their loving king and queen.
That’s what you get for laughing and living like a queen when your people are starving. She deserved it all.

She only showed humility when the pitchforks were at her door. She lived lavishly and had no concern for the numerous poor children that died as a result of horribly impoverished conditions and her corruption. You can’t have your cake and let them eat cake too.
Do a little more digging into her life that is NOT added into dramatic cinematic productions. You may learn some mindblowing information that may change your view point a little bit. Like the fact that she did not bow down on balcony if I remember correctly, she faced the mob with determination, pride and grace. It was the first time in a LONG time that the people started shouting Long live the Queen. There are some AMAZING TH-cam History channels that have covered Marie Antoinette her life and the truth including the necklace scandal.

What pissed me off about this movie was them riding off into the sunset in the end!
they were running away to hide and it was the sunrise
it’s what they did when they left versailles. they dressed up as a normal family, but were almost instantly recognized and basically arrested
This movie’s ending is far from benevolent. We all know what became of this family, even if they don’t actually show it at the end.
Aside from the fact that it really happened, it's dramatic irony. They're not riding to a happily ever after. If one is familiar with French history, they know they're going to their deaths.
