Another thing that I suggest for the first build: don't worry about the look and sound of the final product. Just remember to study, especially T/S parameters, how do they work and crossovers. A well built crossover is 50% of the work

I'm so glad you mentioned the looks in there!! I see so many people saying it doesn't matter, its a speaker, its only supposed to SOUND good.... I want my speaker to look at LEAST as good as they sound!! It IS something that matters!! altho maybe not that much in a first build.... Great video Kirby! They are harder to make. If you think about a 200HZ pure sine wave bass note the speaker has to respond by moving through 200 movement cycles a second, following the input waveform precisely. At 16KHz it has to move through 16,000 cycles in the same length of time and still follow the input waveform as precisely as possible. That second feat requires the materials to be much more rigid, yet lightweight. You can have very light materials cheaply, or you can have very rigid materials cheaply, but you can't have low weight AND rigidity at once cheaply. The second factor that drives up the cost is that tweeters have to be made to much finer tolerances than low and mid range speakers. That means the materials cost more and the process of making those materials into a speaker also costs more.

I have some questions about enclosures, drivers and their acoustic relationship. Firstly - Older/vintage enclosure shape was generally tall, wide and shallow whereas modern speakers tend to be tall, narrow and deep. What is the general sound you get out of older cabinet shapes vs new? Are newer ones better or different? Secondly - Is there a general guide for how big the speakers (mainly woofer) should be in relationship to the cabinet? Is there a reason that a 4"or 6"woofer shouldn't be used in a cabinet that is, say, 500mm wide and 700mm tall? Is there a such thing as too small and too big? Thirdly - Is it necessary to pad the inside of bigger cabinets or are there advantages/disadvantages to installing padding vs nothing? Fourthly - Do you do any special calculations of how the cabinet space and shape will interact with the drivers or is that too in depth and unnecessary? I'm asking because I have some vintage speakers (Goodman XB 25) that I need to replace all the drivers for. The woofers were missing and one of the tweeters was broken so I'll just buy new ones. They do have some 8"radio shack subwoofers as replacements which I think are good but I'm wondering they're somehow a bad match for those cabinets. Also because I modified two sets of big enclosures maybe 20 years ago with mixed results. I had almost no idea about acoustics so I probably did too many things wrong. One set sounded okay, the other set ended up sounding weak. I can more into detail on the specifics of those if anyone wants to talk about that.
I bought only 2 inch ghxamp and aiyima speaker and amplifiers. I also bought a narra wood here in palawan. Problem is I can not make mistakes cutting narra wood because it is too expensive. It is a one time cut and trim and making holes. Heavy wood but worth the sound quality.
I was thinking of grabbing a new pair of Polk R300s and swapping the driver and tweeter from parts express, specifically Dayton Audio DC28FS-8 1-1/8" and Tang Band W6-2144 6-1/2". I figured I'd get a two-way passive crossover at 3000hz. I'm buying the r3000 specfifically for the enclosure at 80$ a pair Canadian. Any tips? This would be my first speaker build and I really want to see what these Tang band drivers can do.
I just collect all sorts of old drivers from old speakers or cheap sets or thriftshops and based on what I have laying around I think of an enclosure type 'feels' correct for the drivers. It's going pretty well so far, already built one set of MLTL (Vifa ring radiator + Tannoy woofer, custom made crossover) and a smaller full range (FRS8 with homemade notch filter) TL. I'm planning on building a back loaded horn with a small 3" or 4" full range driver. Can't wait :D

Now can you take a low range woofer and a tweeter and put them in paralel in a large, heavily insulated sealed box and have good sound quality. from what i know you can and in some cases it sound better than with a midrange woofer. this is just a guess but i just want to check
You need a cross-over. When you build a 2-way system you often can do with a simple first or second order cross-over which need much less components than higher order cross-overs. If you omit the cross-over you are very likely to burn your tweeter at high volumes.

Currently I'm using a frankenstein setup of marantz precision series P-830 speakers with the woofers of a set of Pioneer S-Z94's. At the moment it sounds amazing, but would it be worth building a custom housing? Paid 10 euros for the P-830's with a perfect housing but woofers with foamrot, also paid 10 euros for the S-Z94's with 1 broken tweeter in one of the speakers.
hannes something IMHO building a completely new set of speakers would be a better idea. That way, you would know the thiele-small parameters of the drivers to calculate the ideal enclosure, and even spending less than $150 you could buy much better drivers (store-bought speakers usually don't have great drivers to keep the cost down, especially when factoring in their profit margin, amplifier, assembly cost...). You can check a popular and tested design (by zachaudio, the overnight sensations, or the ribbon "diy speedsters" which zeos reviewed) if you're interested.

Im building a small mp3 player with 3watt amplifier. How do I know if a small speaker will perform well - high sensitivity? Recall last century, 'transistor radios' had a tiny tinny sound, but now we can buy a 'boom box' the same size which is loud enough for a party. Whats different in the full range driver inside and how to know when buying?
I would suggest you try marine speakers , my favorite is a setup of 2 tweeters 1 woofer on 2 separate boxes preferably plastic and 1 marine 10” sub or if you wanna go really cheap get any speaker and buy a can of everdry trust me it works I can fully submerge speakers and they will still play if you coated them really good inside and out

When building portable active speakers (f.i. BT speakers), I would say driver efficiency (sensitivity) is about the most important spec. In theory a difference of +3dB will extend your battery-life by a factor 2. Apart from that I would look at the Thiele Small parameters, because from those you can calculate the size of your enclosure, the resonance frequency and the length of your bass-port if you build vented speakers. The looks of the driver itself are rather insignificant, first of all you want good sounding speakers with long battery life. Based on the driver you can design a good looking enclosure even though the driver itself looks horrible, in which case you can hide your driver from sight.
I’m adding speakers inside of a small harp (a Harpsicle, with an approximate interior useable box size of 5 x 1.5 x 28 inches, 5 x 3 x 28 total if there was no wooden spine down the middle of the soundboard supporting the strings). I think I’d prefer to use the speaker type that turns a surface itself into a speaker. Can you help me figure out what I need for this? I suspect I need two 4-ohm transducers (I found a couple small enough to fit in the space between the string band spine and the outer case), a crossover for them (if crossovers are used for these sort of speaker) and a way to attach a 9-volt battery for power (though I’d love to be able to do without the battery). Any recommendations?
Parts Express IS a great place for a very wide selection of speaker drivers of all types and price ranges, but also MCM Electronics and Madisound are two other great places to get speaker drivers and other speaker related components, (x-over stuff, cabinet HW, etc.) And as far as the main title of this video goes, I also do a final side-by-side A/B/(C/D) listening comparison, (using a few of my favorite well known CDs and a special 4-way driver switch that I made), between any/all of the potential drivers that I'm considering for a speaker project to make sure I get the absolute cleanest and best sounding ones!... This is especially important to do with the midrange drivers, because I have found *tremendous* differences in overall sound quality and clarity, even between mids of the exact same size and type/design... And even though in general you get what you pay for with speaker quality, I have definitely come across a few really inexpensive drivers, (sometimes even "free", scrapped from another old or damaged speaker), that sound WAY better than some MUCH more expensive new ones, so a high price shouldn't be the main and definitely not the only deciding factor in guaranteeing a good sound... You definitely have to listen to them too! (As I'm sure *you* already know, but some people reading this may not have considered that...) I have checked out a few of your speaker building videos, and I agree with most of what you are talking about... I might just have to subscribe.
I just wanna ask. Is a 60w (30w+30w) speaker too much?? I am planning to buy a 2 channel 30+30 amp, then wire a 2 way crossover to each channel, and then wire a mid range woofer and a tweeter to each crossover. Would that be okay?

I have been searching for a way to run two separate boom-box speakers via Bluetooth. For me its no wires and being portable. The output from my mixing board would need to plug into a the Bluetooth transmitter. would I need a transmitter for each channel or is there a transmitter that will broadcast to two separate Bluetooth devices?

Found a speaker enclosure years ago. Have some noisy neighbours who need some lessons in being polite (could always grab the sledgehammer and some mates) but returning the speaker enclosure which is over a metre long by about 70cm deep by about 60cm high to its glory would teach them we all have loud systems is a much better option a police attendance comes with helicopters and about 5-10 cars. Will build my system, sit it outside and direct it at them. That forces them to come to mine (those who are familiar with police attendance know what happens next 😂 I won't be arrested they will be and here in Australia we get a pay out from criminals doing naughty things= Brand new LOUD SPEAKER sound system 💯💪 Where I am it's like a NZ Rugby union team, so I welcome the visit. They won't enjoy serving time then being sent back that's for sure!

Currently I'm using a frankenstein setup of marantz precision series P-830 speakers with the woofers of a set of Pioneer S-Z94's.
At the moment it sounds amazing, but would it be worth building a custom housing?
Paid 10 euros for the P-830's with a perfect housing but woofers with foamrot, also paid 10 euros for the S-Z94's with 1 broken tweeter in one of the speakers.
hannes something IMHO building a completely new set of speakers would be a better idea. That way, you would know the thiele-small parameters of the drivers to calculate the ideal enclosure, and even spending less than $150 you could buy much better drivers (store-bought speakers usually don't have great drivers to keep the cost down, especially when factoring in their profit margin, amplifier, assembly cost...). You can check a popular and tested design (by zachaudio, the overnight sensations, or the ribbon "diy speedsters" which zeos reviewed) if you're interested.

Do you have a recommendation on types of speakers for an outdoor application? One where it may be humid but no in direct rain.
I would suggest you try marine speakers , my favorite is a setup of 2 tweeters 1 woofer on 2 separate boxes preferably plastic and 1 marine 10” sub or if you wanna go really cheap get any speaker and buy a can of everdry trust me it works I can fully submerge speakers and they will still play if you coated them really good inside and out

When building portable active speakers (f.i. BT speakers), I would say driver efficiency (sensitivity) is about the most important spec. In theory a difference of +3dB will extend your battery-life by a factor 2. Apart from that I would look at the Thiele Small parameters, because from those you can calculate the size of your enclosure, the resonance frequency and the length of your bass-port if you build vented speakers.
The looks of the driver itself are rather insignificant, first of all you want good sounding speakers with long battery life. Based on the driver you can design a good looking enclosure even though the driver itself looks horrible, in which case you can hide your driver from sight.
I’m adding speakers inside of a small harp (a Harpsicle, with an approximate interior useable box size of 5 x 1.5 x 28 inches, 5 x 3 x 28 total if there was no wooden spine down the middle of the soundboard supporting the strings). I think I’d prefer to use the speaker type that turns a surface itself into a speaker. Can you help me figure out what I need for this? I suspect I need two 4-ohm transducers (I found a couple small enough to fit in the space between the string band spine and the outer case), a crossover for them (if crossovers are used for these sort of speaker) and a way to attach a 9-volt battery for power (though I’d love to be able to do without the battery). Any recommendations?

Parts Express IS a great place for a very wide selection of speaker drivers of all types and price ranges, but also MCM Electronics and Madisound are two other great places to get speaker drivers and other speaker related components, (x-over stuff, cabinet HW, etc.)
And as far as the main title of this video goes, I also do a final side-by-side A/B/(C/D) listening comparison, (using a few of my favorite well known CDs and a special 4-way driver switch that I made), between any/all of the potential drivers that I'm considering for a speaker project to make sure I get the absolute cleanest and best sounding ones!... This is especially important to do with the midrange drivers, because I have found *tremendous* differences in overall sound quality and clarity, even between mids of the exact same size and type/design... And even though in general you get what you pay for with speaker quality, I have definitely come across a few really inexpensive drivers, (sometimes even "free", scrapped from another old or damaged speaker), that sound WAY better than some MUCH more expensive new ones, so a high price shouldn't be the main and definitely not the only deciding factor in guaranteeing a good sound... You definitely have to listen to them too! (As I'm sure *you* already know, but some people reading this may not have considered that...)

I just wanna ask. Is a 60w (30w+30w) speaker too much?? I am planning to buy a 2 channel 30+30 amp, then wire a 2 way crossover to each channel, and then wire a mid range woofer and a tweeter to each crossover. Would that be okay?

Hello I had a question. I am wanting to build my own bookshelf speakers to finish out my surround sound. My receiver is a onkyo that’s rated at 75 watts rms my question is do both the woofer and the tweeter need to be rated at 75 watts? Or how does that work when using a woofer and tweeter.

higher power speakers on a lower power amp allways works, but not the other way around (atleast not for max. volume). watch the impedance, this is more important

I have been searching for a way to run two separate boom-box speakers via Bluetooth. For me its no wires and being portable. The output from my mixing board would need to plug into a the Bluetooth transmitter. would I need a transmitter for each channel or is there a transmitter that will broadcast to two separate Bluetooth devices?

Is it necessary that the midrange driver have same wattage capacity of woofer?
You could always put a attenuation circuit after the crossover to match driver spl better.

Found a speaker enclosure years ago.
Have some noisy neighbours who need some lessons in being polite (could always grab the sledgehammer and some mates) but returning the speaker enclosure which is over a metre long by about 70cm deep by about 60cm high to its glory would teach them we all have loud systems is a much better option a police attendance comes with helicopters and about 5-10 cars.
Will build my system, sit it outside and direct it at them.
That forces them to come to mine (those who are familiar with police attendance know what happens next 😂
I won't be arrested they will be and here in Australia we get a pay out from criminals doing naughty things= Brand new LOUD SPEAKER sound system 💯💪
