  • Hello guys! In this episode I will explain how speaker drivers work. And I think the best way to do this, is to build one and explain everything while I build it.

      @djijspeakerguy4628 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah. I made a diy speaker box from an aluminum soda can and some pillow stuffing, and sealed it with hot glue to the point of no air leaks. This is an acoustic suspension design, and the pillow stuffing makes those sound better. Used a typical small 10 watt full range speaker driver. (Not a woofer, nor a tweeter, but can do both.), which I had mounted on the end you usually drink from, which was removed with a can opener. I was surprised when it actually sounded good, not unlike this. Literally took me an hour and a spare speaker driver to make.

    Speakers are rated in reactance resistance. So 5.6 ohms is generally 8 ohms on a speaker. Also if you put a metal ring or sleeve around the outside of the coil that would greatly increase the sensitivity as this would pull the magnetic field across the coil. Good job.

    1. If stifer the speaker the more power it needs to get the same loudnes as a non stiff speaker
    2. Higher the speaker impedance harder to drive it to the max volume
    3. If your voice coil has smaler air gaph beneth the magnet, the biger will be the sensiviti (80dB

    Absolutely outstanding work. I've looked at various diagrams without properly understanding it. Now I completely get it.Thank you Sorin!
    Modern manufacturing techniques mean even complex things can be manufactured extremely cheaply. Nothing here is hard to make in a modern factory, all the parts are so simple that Sorin was able to make a passable version out of literally nothing. I fully appreciate that speaker manufacturers use high grade materials to make really high performing drivers but, at its core, it's a very simple collection of parts. There must be plenty of profit to be made when selling a few of these drivers in a nicely built cabinet and charging £1k, 10k or even in excess of £100k in many cases.
    Anyway, Bravo Sir!

    Amazing how "simple" a speaker actually is built. I thought there is more than just a coil, magnets and some membranes. Damn. Great work!

      The only difference being the materials that the speaker drivers are made out of. In essence, they all work the same way.
      Some exotic and high end drivers use materials like Kevlar, carbon fiber or lightweight metals like titanium or aluminium. Most speakers have metal frames.
      Different materials sound differently to one another, as some sound very rich across a broad spectrum, others sound really good at a narrow frequency band.
      Subwoofer drivers are commonly made out of paper (most high-end units use a non-pressed paper cone, that adds a lot of rigidity). Cheaper units are made out of various types of plastic, as that is much easier and faster to produce.
      Tweeters on the other hand can be made out of almost any material.
      There is also the debate around using rubber or foam surrounds. One is better for SQ, the other is better for SPL, though one has better longevity than the other.
      Magnets are also made differently. While most speakers use a large ferrite (iron) magnet, some use neodymium magnets. Neo motors have much greater force relative to their size, but they are also much more expensive to make.. However, neodymium magnets are much more durable than their ferrite counterparts.
      In short: You are correct in both statements. A speaker is just made out of simple parts, but there is more to it than just that. Materials play a big role in the creation of a speaker driver.
