  • In this episode we have a near disaster which is overted by the routine maintnence checks done every morning of the vehicles whilst overlanding even short distances it shows how important these checks are. This is the final leg of the journey where we return home after having a fantastic trip to the Abenteuer Allrad and several countries in Europe..we have seen some amazing sites and places on the way.

My disco 300tdi, same running gear as your defender, shook a front wheel loose and snapped a stud.
Landrover manual says to torque the nuts up every 400 miles.
That’s every 5 days in my case. There is always one that is loose.

Hi...This is the first time we have had the wheel nuts come loose our other truck which is built on a disco we have done entire trips of several thousand miles and never had an issue. so going to have to look into why this one has backed off the wheel nuts...but i definately will be checking them daily from now on......

Bud, it’s the wheel type that the prob, they can flex on bends and self undo nuts, I would upgrade to Landrover Heavy Duty (Wolf), that’s the reason for the stiffening of the centre nave, msg me re your gearbox, have a standard Lt77 being done at mo

Hey up Phil...you could well be right about the wheels as they are a different make but the same size as the ones on the disco...but unfortunately don't make a set of wolf rims that are 10J with a -32 offset...will send you a message later about the gearbox mate..

You might want to get your torque wrench checked mate 😮 all jokes aside you dodged a bullet there, glad you spotted it

Hi..definately did dodge a bullet but that is the importance of doing those checks everyday. But as for the torque ratchet i think i only actually pu the wheels on with an impact gun and possibly forgot to torque them up so definately my fault..

Wheel nuts worked loose on a transit van years ago on me.
You don't need all the nits n bolts on a landrover

Hi..you definately don't need all the nuts and bolts Dan but it would be nice to keep all the wheels attached...

hi mate...it certainly was weird it all backed off i have never had that happen before i think what had happened is that i put them on with the impact and not gone round and torqued them up certainly a mistake i will not be doing again...it just shows the importance of those daily checks.

Should you not have jacked the truck up to ensure you weren't tightening the nuts up with the wheels not vertical? You were assuming that the wheels were vertical when you tightened them.

Hi...you would not be able to tighten the wheel nuts tight enough if it was jacked up as the wheel would just rotate so you would always tighten them up on the ground as they would pull itself square as you tighten it in a crosshatch pattern.
