Thank you for this. There aren't many good videos on TH-cam about this. My father in law is untreated bipolar 1 with a diagnosis from over 10 years ago but refuses meds. He's a professional private pilot and has recently been unstable. He refuses to acknowledge he's got a problem and therapists suggest he could have narcissistic personality disorder. So we are dealing with someone that is vindictive and punishing and he mirrors. He gets physically aggressive but sees himself as the victim to the point of calling the cops for no reason, when someone only argues or he thinks they will argue with him. (Not an exaggeration) He's announced that he will kill himself more than once. But never threatened anyone so no one can actually force him to get re evaluated. I truly believe since he's not treated it's a matter of time until he becomes very dangerous and i think he will target the family for "revenge". He's the type to punish others for not liking himself. He hates all of us. and has no love for his children. His hatred for us is a direct reflection of his hatred for himself. He recently acts like he has nothing to lose and seems erratic. Everyone is afraid of him and no one thinks there's anything to do because what can the cops do? he hasn't actually done anything or threatened others. i believe he is capable of premeditative horrible things I don't want to say on a youtube comment.

This reminded me of how my husband acts sometimes. Did you guys ever help him? Or any updates. It's hard dealing with mine. I just go in the bathroom. So our fighting stop and by then we calm down. I have bp too.

Naomi; W/all due respect 2 ur F-i-L & his Bipolar Disorder, the negative side effects r more debilitating than the condition itself. I also have Bipolar Disorder myself & spent 44 yrs of my 56 (recently celebr8d my 56th b-day on 7/20) on "treatment l" (read: meds). I've been psych med-free since 1/1/2017 & 4 the most part, was doing relatively well until my bird-daughter Chimes (whom I shared w/my x-GF Andrea) passed away 3 months ago. When it comes 2 what constitutes as "treatment", please consider that counseling (i.e.: psychotherapy) is also treatment. If ur F-I-L refuses that, then (& only then)!u can call it "untreated". After 30+ different psych meds starting w/Ritalin @ age 4 in 1971 (also included Thorazine @ age 10 in 1977, Haldol 1 yr l8r, Lithium @ age 18, Risperdal--via court-order--10 yrs l8r, Zyprexa, & Depakote amongst notables), the cumulative negative side effects far outweighed the "benefits". Just bc ur F-I-L refuses meds DOES NOT MEAN he's refusing treatment.

Thank you Dr. Croft. Your explanations make the material much easier to understand. As a PMH-NP student, I appreciate your videos.

I will never EVER take that pointless poison again, not to mention they kept wanting to switch things back and forth and give me blood tests up the arm which took 4 hourse sometimes for them to find a vein for medicines that won't even help me. All for no improvement. I literally just went in and asked them to improve my attention span, executive memory, and help with anxiety and sleep. instead, I have nothing good and all this I got was bad worthless shit. the psychiatric community is pathetic. And to boot, I now know just how truly pathetic, wothless, and inferior I truly am... Thanks doctors. and my reward was absolutely nothing but humiliation. I haven't talked to my parents in years over what they did to me. Now that we don't speak the only way me to force them to see the error of their ways is through blackmail pictures I've had from their phones.

My daughter cut me off. I don't know what to do. She doesn't want to go to doctor.

Hello, I'm sorry about your daughter. It must be so difficult to want to help your child and unable to do so. I found a couple of posts at HealthyPlace that I hope help you, if only a little. Best wishes to you. ~Amanda -- "What to Do if Someone with Bipolar Refuses Treatment" at goo.gl/mkCqak or "How Do I Convince My Friend To Get Help For Bipolar Disorder?" at goo.gl/FTL5GJ

I know someone who has this disorder and it’s gotten to the point where I can’t be around her anymore because she refuses to take her medicine and she’s gotten even worse.
