  • When the gold gets small enough it starts to behave differently in the pan. This can be a good thing or a bad thing, It is definitely bad if you don't know about it.

That’s how it works, and works so well with the 50 mesh/ 100 mesh system. Will move you through.

Pannng hard rock gold is definitely different than placer. The usual 'backwash and tap' method doesn't seem to work well for hard rock gold. As you mentioned, a different set of techniques is required. Thanks for shedding light on those. Also, a small black finishing pan is a must! I tried panning hard rock gold with a green Garrett Super Sluice (works well for placer). I thought there was no gold in the material, even when looking through a 10X loupe. I tried a black pan instead (a small Gold Claw), and suddely the same material revealed some gold. Might have been the black color, or perhaps the jigging motion back and forth that held on to the gold. Not sure. Regardless, I found it was the contrast between the black pan, gold, red garnets and green volcanics, as well as the behaviour of gold while gently back washing and side to side washing that proved it was gold. Thanks Keith, appreciate your work and all the insights you share! - Dan from www.Pickaxe.ca

What’s even crazier is how easy that 100 mesh floats without jetdry, fine enough powder will look like sparkly water with such a even film of it at bottom n rest suspended as soon as you turn pan even with jet dry

Came here from FGW channel and found this vid. I liked the video, even though I learned something concerning and have no idea how one might easily deal with such a problem. A rod mill to flatten maybe? IDK
    Good vid overall though.

Rod and ball mills can also be a gold trap in many cases.

That tungsten sub 400 mesh is great practice material for this technique if fine gold is not available. Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks Keith..this was helpful! Along a similar line, when I first got my blue bowl a few years back, being new to all of this, I didn't read the instructions carefully and did not properly classify my cons further other than just running all the material together in the bowl that met the maximum size restriction recommended to put into the bowl criteria from the maker/manufacturer. I later realized myself, confirmed after talking with prospector Bud who runs the prospecting store in Helena, that I lost some fine gold when I would let the bowl run unattended for awhile with the water pressure turned up to the point where the heavier black sands would slowly be discharged in the middle as is normal, thinking that the gold would stay put being "heavier", and not considering the weight of the individual larger black sand particles was greater than some of the small finer gold particles to the point where I had some microfine gold losses as I tried to segregate the gold from the black sands.
When I started to classify the cons into 3 or 4 size groups (all under the max size) and run one group at a time the bowl pretty much captured all the gold no matter how small, at least that which you could see with a loupe. As you pointed out in this video, I could see how easily some larger gold could be missed in the bottom of the pan when using the tapping method or something similar...

That's a great demo Keith , and definitely true , i had some super fine gold in a snuffer bottle , and it's viscosity almost resembled oil , i had real trouble getting it out of the snuffer , i had to rinse it over and over and shake it to get it all out and into a tissue hand towel so i could smelt it , good demo indeed , need to be aware to not lose any of the courser gold in the mix , thanks for sharing your knowledge , cheers .

I got 50 mesh magnetite. I used strong magnets with a technique and was able to extract the magnetite. All I was left was silt... I panned it out and I had what looked like floating gold and it was sinking.. huge pile at bottom... I got 50 lbs of the 50 mesh and after working with some a while i extracted enough and it was heavy.. but now I'm not sure if it's just fools gold so i stopped processing till i figure out if I'm wasting my time... i think it might be fools gold because when it shines under light it sparkles but then specks look blackish back to sparkle yellow.. mine is 50 mesh or smaller.. maybe 35 mesh specks that fill a 15th of the bottle of a Tabasco bottle with only 8oz cup full of 50 mesh magnetite. Some smart guy told me I could use n52 magnets with a technique to remove only the magnetite releasing any trapped micro gold clung in between the magnetite dust. The amount I got seems too goo to be true so I stopped till I can do a acid test. Its heavy..

If you have a scale do a density test. With that much it should be fairly straightforward.

The problem I stated when you came by. Gold that is beyound 100 mesh? Is to fine to define by itsself. Pluss I wondet how much started out super small like that? As crushing it is not necessarily goling to eroad it smaller than 100 mesh. As it probably takes a abrasive situation to get it any smaller. That' or, in its formation? It never was any bigger. Meaning it may take doing more to get it down in size, macanichaly. May take a rock tumbler? That wears on it. And does not try to break it up. As to mach what I have seen on the beach? It has to be small enough to be unsustainable to holding it in the pan.
With out any definition of size to mesure? 100 mesh and smaller is lost to the water molicues. Why 100 sticks to the pan. It is sticking to the molicues of the pan. But any smaller? And it does not have enough indevidual mass to keep it on the bottom where it sticks. Why I change the pan out for the board. For working the waist out. As only dry does the cohesion quit. And the static charge of accumulated gold can gather up the super fine gold in itsself. Leaving everything else free to fall down the doard with out the cohesion to hold it with the gold.
Why countering curents and eddies free the gold from traveling along the waters path with eveything else. And if working off mostly waist? Peaces will not be able to gather with them selves. Before migating out of a semi concentrated state.
No' water is the enamy here. It works great for 100 mesh and larger. But is to destirbing to the smaller gold to seperate out as itsself in a concentrated mass. As no one peace can stay on its own. And needs the other gold particles to hold on too. As the surface molicules of the pan are more easly filled with water molicules. And the super fine gold has no mass or wait to displace it. So it can stick. But when many acumulate? It becomes even easyer for it to stay locked to the bottom. As it fits into the cavities inbetween the molicules of the pan. Where the static weight builds in its acumulated mass that holds even more gold. But if panning it with water? Not all can fight its way down while everything else is rising up in cleaning a consentration with mostly waist in it. Adding to the exiting cohesion. And not getting to the bottom.
But like I said. It may be dificult to get it made as small as it is made in nature. And not something most are going to ever do? Making gold small, that it will be more easly lost by doing it. No one does that. And is why no one knows the exstent of micro gold in placer. As everyone thinks it is just like whats milled. Because its the smallest gold they know of that is in any concentration. So when its seen in the pan? Everyone thinks they got it all. With no way to question if they realy did.
As a kid I lived neer the beach. And tried to pan the ghost gold that apeard there in ribbons. Could see endless amounts of it. And even if I was a expert panner at the age of ten? I never seen anything in any pan I did. Back then i thought it was a mater of tecnheck to do what everyone said was Inposeble. So I tried a lot.
Well im going back to that same beach. And will get my revenge. I know now how to get it out. And even found a place where the sand washes into a small round island. The last one i saw when i was a kid? Would be solid gold ontop of it. Like a gold ball sticking out of the sand. And only visable on a reseeding tide. With the light of the sun low on the horision infrount of you. Otherwise there was nothing there to be seen. As i believe that a magnetic force exzists in the vast blacksand deposits. As there has to be something that gets all the particals of gold to lay only one way? So all can be seen at ones as a whole. Because there was nothing there otherwise. As a pan would not yeald a single notion of a idea, that there was any gold there.

I'm having some trouble following the theory with words. Assuming you get it worked out by summer, perhaps we could come by to see in person when I get a few days off. That trick with screening without screens has sure come in handy a couple times, but it is a lot easier demonstrated than explained.

But is a slow road to getting on my feet. Still have IBS and eat only eggs. And now take a drug called Linzess. Everyone says this is not hell? I'm trying. But still not seeing it.
