Multiple callbacks to Project Pegasus. If you remember the beginning of the Avengers movie, they were in an underground facility called Pegasus. A project where they were developing weapons/uses for the Teserac stone, like the lightspeed engine. Remember Capt America exposed Project Pegasus on the carrier ship in Avergers that Shield was developing weapons based on the Teserac.

It is a girls rising up kind of movie, but it’s also a general human rising against suppression movie. She had been held back in a very similar fashion to Thor in Ragnarok.
Every oppressor makes some excuse for claiming others to be inferior and invalid, and some excuses are just outright lies. You can see parallels to misogyny, for sure, it’s just that it’s also an important message for everyone, that people actively try to strip out and keep you from seeing, by claiming that it’s not for you, it’s for a minority of aggressive feminists that should for some reason be villainized.
People complained about Black Panther’s success, because they believed it to be a black movie for black people, to make others feel guilty. Except, these days, too many people have said, “Yeah, cool, that’s fine. Let the brothas preach, they deserve it.”
It’s just hard to reach people about female rights, because they keep deciding half the population is surely impossible to suppress, so it must be made up, or they hear crap about physical strength and read biased statistics, and say “oh yeah that science applies to literally any human skill, so it must be okay to treat them like garbage in general.” They’re making similar bs arguments for gays, they’re making things up about trans people, they’re even jumping to conclusions about disabled people, especially for mental disabilities. So many people are stronger than they’re given credit for, and sometimes the discredit is enough to ruins lives.
Carol had to get back up and fight - not just for herself, but because the Krull couldn’t.

Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Got her powers from the Teseract/Space infinity stone. The blue cube from the Avenger's, Thor and Captain America 1 movies. The Mind stone was in Loki's staff. The Power stone was the purple one in Guardians of the galaxy 1. The Teseract can transfer it's power to various objects and can be used, as most of the infinity stones can to power things. Loki's staff in Avengers was the Mind stone with a casing of The space stone energy around it powering it. The engine in the Jet that Carol shot was a transfer and stealing of power from the Space stone. So was Loki's staff and the weapons that the Jatowri used which was Thanos troops in the first Avengers movie and the Hydra weapons used in the first Captain America. The power transferred to Carol when she shot it. Which is why she's soo powerful. She's literally a portion of power from the Space infinity stone. Her powers are about on par with DC's Superman. And is Marvel's version of Superman basically. She was too busy with the Skrulls and fighting the Kree empire and dealing with galaxy wide issues to be worried much about about a small planet like C53/Earth to be around for everything before Endgame. The universe wasn't actually caring about anything here until Loki attacked during the battle of New York and Then Thanos coming for the Mind and Time stones during infinity war. Everything else in every single other Marvel movie was a "local problem" and Earth's issue and not the Galaxy's. So no one but Earth cared. Carol probably hadn't even heard anything about Earth from anyone anywhere. The universe is a big place and Earth is not exactly a developed or space faring race in the Marvel universe. We're on an outer spiral arm away from most of the galaxies activity, not space faring and have nothing anyone wants. Like a wood shack in the middle of the woods miles away from any major city. So she didn't even know anything was wrong until Fury used the pager in Infinity War. She might not have even been in this Galaxy at all.
And yes I don't get the hate. Personally I liked it. Yes it wasn't Infinity War or Iron Man but it never was going to be. I think the non stop action of that colored people's opinion of it. Was there a lot of drab settings like deserts and forest and plain government facilities half the time? Yes but the other half wasn't. Was it the best Marvel movies ever? No. But it wasn't Bad. Meh maybe but that's not the same as bad. I honestly don't think Brie did a bad job. Was it an amazing emotional packed performance? No. But if you were paying attention she wasn't supposed to be that emotional. She spent 6 years with a device jacked into her brain trying to control her and was being trained every day for years to control her emotions. I doubt it was bad acting she's done great in everything I've seen her act in. I think a lot of the hate comes from the drab settings half the time and it not being as epic as the other movies and especially because of how Fury lost his eye. People were sooooooo pissed at that. Ok it was a Flerken and supposed to be ironic and funny considering how much of a bad ass fury is. And that's what we got. Wasn't that funny and it could've been a far better back story. But it didn't "Destroy the MCU and Fury" like some people said 🙄. At best it was just meh, ok 🤷🏼‍♂️. Was it a great movie? No. Did it "Destroy the MCU and my entire life" like these whiny little snow flake soy boys said? Nope. It was just meh 🤷🏼‍♂️. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. But I still liked it. And people whined also because it was "forced" girl power and pandering supposedly was a complaint 🙄. Especially the No Doubt "I'm just a girl" song. Omg these morons lost their minds 😂🙄. The main protagonist and hero IS A WOMAN! Duh! The Movie is about a strong hero woman! Hello????! Think Mcfly, think. At least they didn't sexually objectify her. Let's count the men with shirts off
    1. Thor did that on top of shoving macho male stereotypes down your throat on top of it. And no one said JS.
    2. So did Captain America. Again no one said JS.
    3. So did Guardians of the galaxy with Star Lord/Peter Quill. Again no one complained.
Then the Women. So did Iron Man with Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and then Pepper in Iron Man 3, again JS! The worst they did in this movie was put her in a Nine Inch Nails Tshirt with no bra 😱. And use a No Doubt song and just be semi bland. Big fu#$&@# deal. Brie was directed that way and it was the character.

In subsequent re-watches, I've really come to enjoy this movie. It sucks that it was released so late into the MCU. I watched through the MCU recently with my mother, and decided to watch in timeline order, skipping around post credits where necessary. I liked this a lot, but I'm familiar with Carol Danvers, so I was just happy to see her get a good treatment here. You mentioned she looked like Wonder Woman, and in many ways she is Marvel's version of her. Nice introduction of the Skrulls, whose war with the Kree also has a long history in the comics. A lot of people were unhappy with the fragmented memory approach to the story, and maybe that was an issue for people who weren't familiar with her learning about her. Plus, her dry demeanor in the beginning was due to the Kree reconditioning, as her flashbacks and photos showed she was a party animal and daredevil.
Really looking forward to future features with her, as her comics arc is long and winding. And her theme music is awesome. :)

I'm glad that you two enjoyed the film. anyone saying, "I hated the movie because it was bad" is an opinion, which I respect, because everyone is entitled to an opinion. it is not evidence. anyone who wants to proclaim that this was a bad film, in the comments here, or in conversations elsewhere, has forgotten that opinions are not facts. I don't get to tell you what color is worst, what painting is best, what movie is worst, or what song is best. those are all opinions, not facts, because art is not objective. what I think is trash, you may think is treasure, and we are BOTH CORRECT, because art is subjective! "I didn't like the movie", or "I hated the movie" is valid, and I respect it; an opinion was given, and many of us prioritize or ignore new media based on the opinions of people we trust. "this is a bad film" or "this is the worst Marvel film" or "this is a great film" are also only opinions, and if the person offering them has no connection to us, then their opinion should have no validity. we live in an age where social influencers are not a made up job description. the first examples were food critics--their astonishing job qualifications; they have eaten food every day of their lives, which describes every human on the planet who is capable of reading their opinions. as much as anyone might want to believe that their OPINION should (or does), mean more than yours (or mine, or your partner's), *only monumental arrogance would expect it to* mean more.
I loved your reaction. PLEASE continue keeping it real! it is interesting, is it not, that some of your biggest problems with the film, like "where has she been all this time?", are addressed immediately in the next film. I also LOVE how you absolutely HATED that Fury's eye was destroyed by a scratch. the film even addressed it! Colson asks about the rumors. we have wondered for years! yet isn't something petty, something pathetic, often the reality of a romanticized historical event? I hate that it was stupid, too. I also kind of love that it was stupid.

I watched the MCU movies in timeline order earlier this year (not in release order). So, Captain Marvel was the second movie I watched after Captain America, the First Avenger. When watching it in timeline order, the movie is pretty good. First, there is only 1 movie and a couple of shorts to compare it to. As a second movie, it doesn’t feel shoehorned in to explain her presence in Endgame. You know from early on how the Avengers Initiative got its name. You understand how Fury has the Tesseract. It makes Coulson an even more important character; seeing him in this movie first makes his death in Avengers that more heartbreaking. And you also know why Fury has the eye patch. So when Fury says that the last time he trusted someone, he lost an eye in The Winter Soldier, I died laughing. It added so much to that line and his serious delivery when you already know the backstory. And the end credits didn’t spoil anything for me. Rather, I was on the edge of my seat watching every movie wondering what was going to happen to Fury and when. So, the order you watch it in can make a difference in the level of enjoyment.

One of the biggest problems of the movie is that the audience is aware of major revelations before the character is aware of them and then the movie expects us to be shocked when the character Carol herself discovers she's been working with bad guys. Although this is a known problem, the way movie is presented as is allows for there to be a scene of action every few minutes.
Another problem is that right from the start Carol is shown as a super-powered who can overcome any problem and that dries up any tension that any scene can have because she can simply use force and cannot be harmed.

Not sure if anyone posted this already, but... If you recall, in _Guardians Volume 1,_ Ronan expressed anger that the Kree had entered a treaty with Xandar, which was his justification for deserting the Kree and teaming up with Thanos. While the subject is never brought up in the movies (thus far, and I haven't seen _The Marvels_ yet), it's generally _assumed_ that this treaty was the result of Danvers taking the side of those standing against the Kree.
Likewise, Korath (played by Djimon Hounsou) is also the same character he plays in _Guardians Volume 1;_ Another assumption is that his cybernetic implants in _Guardians_ are the results of injuries sustained in this film.
Third, Minn-Erva (green-skinned woman with an attitude) is played by Gemma Chan, who plays another character (Sersi) in _Eternals._
Personally, I liked this movie. There was a bit of "girl power" in the marketing, but what I see in the movie (and what you two both seemed to catch) is that her determination and drive came from being human; The only feminist message I saw came from the negative messaging she received (from her father being angry about her go kart crash to the "cock pit" joke during flight school) being something the Supreme Intelligence was able to use as a psychological lever, which Danvers finally got over during her 'stand back up' moment. "Women are human, too" just about sums that up.

My only problem with Captain Marvel is that Vers/Carol don't really have any character arc. She starts out cocky and confident, and she ends up cocky and confident. I think that her betrayal by Jude Law's character should have been devastating to her, as she was learning her past, this betrayal should just be shattering her ties to the Kree because she really trusted her mentor. But she barely seems to notice or care. It's otherwise a perfectly fine Marvel movie, just not spectacular like the rest of Phase 4. I really think if the director/writers had only given her a Tony Stark/Steven Strange arc from overconfidence to despair back to a quiet, responsible confidence at the end.

And when Jude Law's character betrayed her, the one person she thought she could count on, it should have been her big emotional crisis in the movie. Again, I just think she needed a Tony Stark/Steven Strange character arc. It's problematic that she's so overpowered anyway (what I call the Superman problem) so her having a huge emotional issue would make her look less invulnerable emotionally. Because as the movie stands, she's both physically and emotionally invulnerable. It doesn't destroy the movie, but again, it's how they introduced two great cocky characters in the past, and it just makes Captain Marvel a more lackluster MCU movie at this point in the phases, compared to other phase 4 movies.

This movie is ok but could have used better writing. Carol Danvers personality type requires that the movie be written in a way to make you like that character. It's not an inherently like-able personality. Other movies did this well... Top Gun with Maverick, Iron Man with Tony Stark, etc. Brie Larson acted as well as she could with the writing given to her. But the story is told backwards (cause she lost her memory) so we don't get those normal scenes early in the movie that makes you like the character. in screenwriting, these are called "Save the Cat" scenes. We also get scenes where Yon-Rogg / Jude Law is telling her seemingly reasonable things to train her but is actually gaslighting her so that the Kree can control her. The writing has the audience confused and all over the place.

This movie gets a lot of undeserved hate. But it also has a lot of legitimate flaws that are just hard to ignore.
Here is one that bugs me that *no one* seems to talk about. We already established in GotG 1&2 as well as Infinity War that spaceships can use jumps to travel hundreds or even thousands of light years in a very short time. Example: GotG2, Ego describes the location of his planet as "... where I reside, out past the edge of what's known..." Let's be cautions and say that is only half way across our one galaxy, which would be about 20,000-50,000 light years from wherever you are. Ego's ship, Rocket/Groot/Yondu as well as Nebula each seem to make the trip in a single day, maybe two. Simple math says they are averaging somewhere between (roughly) 3.5 million to 18 million times the speed of light. Even in this movie we see faster than light (FTL) travel repeatedly, even in the closing moments of Carol flying off with the ship of Skrulls. (Not to mention in the comics, the Kree homeworld Hala is located in a different galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud 160,000 light years away, and in this movie they covered that distance to Earth pretty quickly).
So what is my point? Why is Mar-Vell (Dr. Wendy Lawson) working on a light speed engine? If she succeeds and builds spaceships that can travel at the speed of light, they will be the slowest ships in the known universe. They would take YEARS just to travel from one star to the next nearest star, or tens of thousands of years to cross the galaxy. How is her scientific breakthrough going to help anybody? It would be like if a major airline just announced they had invented an amazing new airplane that can fly as fast as a human can walk.

    • @dwaynejohnson4727
      @dwaynejohnson4727 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As in depicted in GotG2, in Captain Marvel, the state of the art spacecraft of the Kree and comparable civilizations are sub-light, cosmic fast travel is only possible by utilizing the dedicated networked system of artificial wormholes so called JUMP POINTs.
Jump Points are situated in populated star systems, and as detailed in Captain Marvel when Yon-Rogg inquired what was the closest Jump Point to get to C-53/Earth from their present location, it was 22 hours away by their spaceship's optimal rate of travel. So the Jump Point system is essentially a Space Super Highway but its onramps-offramps are limited, so speed of travel to the Jump Points factors in significantly..
And as demonstrated in GotG2, excessive non stop Jump Point networking hazards a debilitating toll on mortal physiologies.
Mar-Vell's Space Aspect light speed engine would not only outmode Jump Points, but the fact that she could relocate the Skrull refugees to a a new planet far remote from the Jump Point network, beyond the Kree Empire’s access.

This was demonstrated In Avengers Infinity War of Thanos utilizing the Space stone with his Infinity Gauntlet tech to teleport from the Asgardian Refugee ship to his flagship; his flagship to Knowhere and back; his flagship to Titan; Titan to Earth; Earth to his post success secluded planet.

2 If Mar-Vell was working on something other than a light speed engine, why didn't they call it something else? I think you have landed correctly on the point of my complaint, minor as it may be. A light speed engine is rubbish if you already have jump technology.
Even before Thanos had the space stone, the tesseract was used to open a gate to bring Loki to Earth in the opening of the first Avengers movie, so yes, I *do* see what you are saying. If she had developed a new drive, capable of leaping across the galaxy powered by the tesseract, that would have been amazing! But it would not be called a light speed engine and we have no evidence that she knew it could be used that way or that her plan involved that sort of drive. All we know is "light speed" which I have already covered. I am just a person who dislikes bad science. I wish they could have called it anything else. Quantum Drive, Hyperdrive, Skip Drive. @testfire3000
"2 If Mar-Vell was working on something other than a light speed engine, why didn't they call it something else?"
Whether you're referring to the characters as "they" or to the Marvel storytellers and why didn't they write those characters to call it that:
First, what “they” did call it:
Talos: “Lawson” is the link to that light speed engine, and everything were after.
Which the audience later discovered entailed Lawson being the link to the light speed engine at the secured laboratory where Kree Rebel scientist Mar-Vell had provided sanctuary for “everything” they were looking for: their fellow Skrull refugees.
Talos and his Skrull crew only had breadcrumbs, they weren’t explicitly acquainted with Mar-Vell/Lawson’s invention.
      ---
Carol/V-Ers:(to Yon-Rogg) “She’s a scientist, they think she’s cracked the code on light speed tech.”
Carol was going my incidental information she overheard after awakening from the Skrull Mind Probe.
      ---
Yon-Rogg: (to Carol)”I just discovered a mission report sent from C-53, there’s only so much I’m cleared to tell you V-Ers… She was working on a unique energy core; experimenting with tech which could help us win the war.”
Yon-Rogg’s disclosure lacked specificity about Mar-Vell’s project, and essentially purposed half truths to maintain gulling Carol.
      Second, why they called it:
Marvel storytellers were exploiting the light speed travel superiority sci-fi trope to lead the audience to initially misconceive the Skrulls were intergalactic invading villains seeking a technological advancement which offerered a decisive advantage in their alleged ongoing usurpation of worlds and over the Kree heroes opposing them.
The audience later learned it was actually the reverse.

Reactor, just doing their thing: cute cat, look at the cat, what's with the cat? ....
    Me, way too angry:
It's not a fucking cat, IT'S A FLERKEN!!!!!, they literally just told you several times

9:05 I am glad that I grew up during the golden age of blockbuster in the 90’s which is the decade this movie takes place. Also at 11:16 this is one of the few times Stan was playing himself. the script he is reading is for the movie Mallrats which he has a cameo in, and that movie came out in 95 so it’s probably 93 or 94.

This movie was a lot better than I was expecting to be honest with you, just wait for Endgame man, that is what you call the top tier of MCU movies.

I’m honestly kind of tired of hearing people talk about how subpar this movie is. Every reactor feels like they heard it wasn’t good so they decided it wasn’t either. People like Game of Thrones and then come talk about how bad this movie is. 😑 It’s definitely better than Shang Chi, Any Ant Man, Immortals or whatever that was, a couple of Thors movies, and so on.

Personally I loved this movie. Brie Larson gave us a great performance knowing all the other women of Marvel are so good and she’d be compared to all of them.❤️🎥❤️

I was born in 1995. So this nostalgia is very important to me. When I first saw Blockbuster in the teaser trailer, I was already hyped. I didn’t have Nintendo 64, but I remember people going to print out their photos from Pokémon Snap.
After they finished making this movie, the Nippon Sharyo trains were retired from the LACMTA. They used to run the Metro Blue and Green Lines as well as the Expo Line (which is now part of the Gold Line.)
(It’s a long story, but the short version is that the Blue Line now runs from Long Beach to Azusa and the Gold Line now runs from East LA to Santa Monica all thanks to the Regional Connector.)
One Nippon Sharyo car was spared from the scrap yard and instead donated to the Western Railway Museum in Solano County for display.
Maybe Nick meant to say motherflerken when he vanished. I guess that’s for the audience to decide. In the Latin Spanish dub for this movie, he said son of a flerken.

I like this movie a little bit more every time I see it.
Since you’ve already seen Endgame by this point I suggest you look up a specific trailer for Endgame. It’s called: Avengers: Endgame “To The End”. In my opinion, it’s 2 minutes and 35 second masterpiece (for a movie trailer).
