    The paintable figures from WizKids is good enough for my DND character. Especially since I have so many extra parts from my 40k armies and vehicles. I can get three times as many kolbolds with the nolzurs paintable miniatures as in one frame works packs.

    On the one hand, they look interesting, on the other, I just know they'd end up increasing the size of my pile of shame.

    One of the really nice things about minis on sprues is you can paint bits BEFORE you glue them on, thus avoiding those frustrating attempts to fit a brush between the figure and its shield, for example.

    Okay since I got the impression that we have two vastly different camps when it comes to experience I just wanted to throw this out.
    The sprues are, as you stated, the frame and the miniature bits.
    With sprues, vs monopose, you have a few extra steps that will make your life easier.
    Normally, Eyeball the sprue, eyeball the instructions (b/c loadout varies and you might need leg G to go with arm E etc), and get tools on the table.
    Typically, get an old toothbrush and warm soap and water.
    Gently scrub the sprue down before cutting. (Some companies have mold release, it's just best practices to rinse before you wonder why the fuck the primer isn't sticking with company A vs company B). Let it dry.
    Get your eyes on the figure bits, look for mold lines, before cutting off. It should be easier to find the mold lines while on the sprue, since the mold lines follow the plane. Use the back side of an exacto.
    Plan your build out. find the pieces.
    Use snips to snip out bits, put them out in a little bowl.
    Then use the exacto to clean up the clip points. Watch youtube vids.
    Then test fit before gluing.

    I picked up a couple of these from my game store, it was the first time I’ve ever worked with sprue miniatures. I wasn’t the best at getting some of the limbs glued down with a perfect fit but still they came out really well. The cost is definitely a bit of a deterrent from just getting regular nolzur’s unpainted minis for me though. Something I’ll buy more of from time to time when they have a really cool one

      agree! 100 percent. that price point is frankly insulting

    • @MySqueezingArm
      @MySqueezingArm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A neat trick for limbs is called 'pinning'. Basically you drill a tiny hole into the end of the limb and the attachment point. Then you take a piece of a paperclip just long enough to fit into both holes. You put a bit of glue into each hole, place the paperclip piece into the hole on the limb and shove into place on the attachment point.

    I rather like these figures, they're nice enough to paint and display on their own as well as game with. I have the Minotaur, the human (Shaolin?) monk and the human fighter; I gave him the "goblin slayer" helmet. I look forward to snagging some more and I really hope WizKids finally produce a figure for this line of the legendary D&D character War Duke. That would be awesome!

  • @panpan3303

    I think a huge missed opportunity is to have different head for different races, so instead of having separate minis for human Druid tiefling Druid elf Druid and so on for all applicable. It would be much more efficient in my opinion.

    • @DemoBytom
      @DemoBytom 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The body types in most cases wouldn't/shouldn't match. Maybe human and tiefling would, but that's about it. Elves are canonicaly shorter than humans, half orcs are bigger and bulkier etc.

    im used of sprue minis cause of being a warhammer fan but i can say one thing is the nolzers minis i have episodes of hating them with a passion due to their placement of moldlines/slipage during putting them together. nothing ruins a sweet looking troll mini when its had to remove the mold line right across its nose and cheak bones.
    a side note for the ppl that havent done sprue minis before : keep the spare bits of sprue and put it in plastic cement like tamiya's extra thin cement to make "sprue glue" its a good gap filler when needed. it will melt the plastic together and give you a bit of room to sand it off.

    I've bought a few of these and some of the character classes have more to choose from than others. Also some models have more options than shown on the the box. As a fan of painting and building minis i will say for a little bit more money there are great websites that allow far more customizable 3d printed models. If you want a more unique character that isn't going to look like another frameworks guy there are other options. Overall if you have never built and painted minis from sprus you might want to consider the cost of the other things needed like superglue and tools and primer & paint. If you have some experience these things can be quite fun. Overall was satisfied with the ones i got

    If it wasn't for 3D Printing id be all over this, but now that 3D printing has become very affordable I find its much easier to get custom minis / "bits" / make my own. HOWEVER if WizKids ever starts producing STL files for sale .... id be 100% down. Though for those who don't wanna deal with 3D printing this is a nice option for getting semi - customizable minis.

    jeeeesh great idea, but the idea should be to make them cheaper, 15-100 bucks. its way cheaper to manufacture a sprue sheet than assembled minis, like 30 cents each for a sheet. then youre gonna charge 15 damn dollars for the "feature" of assembling it myself. no way, ill just heroforge one, with any pose and look i want

  • @benpuffer7891
    @benpuffer7891 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Ah yes, the infamously overpriced kobold box.

  • @DemoBytom
    @DemoBytom 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The prices are what's going to kill at least some of those boxes. $50 for 7 kobolds/orcs is just way too much, when pretty much any other miniature company will provide better valued boxes.
    Not to mention, from other reviews I've seen online - it seemed as if those two boxes were designed to have more sprues (10 minis each I believe or something?). Kobolds for example come with 7 sprues for 7 minis, but printed instructions are for kobolds 1-5. Two of those sprues are duplicated (I've seen Kobold no 2 and Kobold no 4 being duplicated), the rest are not. It seems like initially they were supposed to have double of each sprue, making it 10 models total, but it got downsized without reducint the price tag. What's more the boxes could easily house two stacks of 5 sprues - so it must've been a decision made late into the production, because cardboard boxes were already made and didn't get downsized to match the reduced amount of sprues.
    I might pick up some of the more obscure/big monsters (which also are priced a bit high, but within reason) and maybe a player option or two (those are best value from the lineup), but I'll need to wait for more player options, because ATM they are too limited.
