  • Dungeons and Dragons minis are getting made in polystyrene now! We've seen resin, bendy plastic, and metal... and now we have hard plastic sprues. :-) This is my favorite material for building, painting, and playing. It looks like these Frameworks minis are gonna be for sale very late 2021 or early 2022. Early samples provided by WizKids for review purposes and as part of free RPG day at Crossroad Games in Standish, Maine.

    I've been playing dnd for a little longer then 20 years. I have only recently gotten into painting minis. While a friend had the biggest influence in getting getting to try. Another big reason, was I had intimidated myself out of even trying.
    Between cost, and the fact I didn't know anyone who painted to ask for advice or tips, I guess I just felt afraid of wasting my money on something I wasn't going to be happy with.
    But I'll tell you, channels like yours have really helped me. Learning techniques and having a place you know you can look for help took a lot of the anxiety away.

    I like everything about these except the price. Personally I find it’s hard enough to get players to pick up minis to begin with, and I think a lot of people will scoff at a price point that starts at $15, especially when 5e can be played with TotM or with digital tabletops.
    I do think it’s kind of weird how there’s almost no d&d miniature painting on TH-cam. Especially when you consider how many of the landmark terrain youtubers got their start doing d&d terrain.

    • @the_arcanum
      @the_arcanum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did too scoff at the price. But let me reassure you: there's plenty of content about painting fantasy minis on the Tube. Channels/painters like Miniac, Ninjon, Mindwinter Minis, Sigmars and about ten other gents and ladies are regularly pushing advanced technical and beginner content on lavis, highlighting, non metallic metals or basing. And i'm not even considering what you can lesrn from the military model hobbyists that publish on TH-cam too. Don't wait for the youtube algorithm to recommend you new stuff, do queries !

      @kelimar3014 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mrmaat I think $5 is low, but I'm Canadian, so my $5 probably isn't your $5. I think $10 is pretty reasonable just because of how many options come with the figure.

      @kingbobb007 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it’s a fair price. Marvel Crisis single figures are around that range, and while larger in scale, they also include pricing for licensing and game design, and don’t come with much in the way of customization options. For $15 retail to get a solid figure that will provide options that become bits when not used is a pretty decent price for this market.

    I dig that they're doing models on sprues with all the extra options. Really makes for good value. I also like Nolzur minis and, while I've come across bendy weapons, they're pretty easy to fix with a little heat (though I've totally cut off a few and customized weapons myself). My only real complaint is with the mold lines. Like you stated, they're definitely harder to clean and end up leaving a good amount of unprimed areas that need to get covered.

      Depends on how many they expect to sell, versus the cost of producing the injection moulding heads which are suuuper expensive. I imagine the cost of "character" models in the GW lines follow this kind of logic as well. D&D has a larger general audience, so likely WizKids are able to amortise the production costs against significantly more sales. That's just my guess though.

    You can fix the bendy swords with a little heat, and after heat treatment they even harden. I just use a regular lighter, put the part I want above the flame for about a second, it gets even softer and I just pull it by the tip in the direction I want it to be, it quickly cools down and hardens into position. it is easier to pull it than to "bend" it into position.

      I've used boiling water a bunch of times - definitely work's on the WizKids line - I managed to completely re-position a Rakdos wing (large model), swords and arms work nicely too. I get them malleable by submerging the part in recently boiled water for maybe 30 - 60 seconds, then, holding the part in the position I want it, dunk it under running cold water at the sink - works a charm.

      Bendy stuff on Reaper minis and also on the older pre-painted D&D miniatures also works with heat by dipping into boiling water until you can shape the mini and cool it afterwards under cold water.

  • @habitualjoker3462
    @habitualjoker3462 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Fyi, you can fix any of the bendy swords from the Reaper Bones line or others made from the same material quite easily. Get one container large enough to immerse the mini and your hands as you hold the weapon in its desired shape. Add enough water with some ice cubes without it overflowing once you dunk the mini. Then boil water in a pot large enough to dunk just the mini-please, no hands in boiling water! Hold the mini upside down by the base (use a cooking spoon if you worry about getting scalded) in the boiling water for about 5 seconds or so. Take it out and shake off excess water. Now gently bend the weapon how you'd like it, hold it that way, and dunk it in the ice bath. Hold for 10 seconds. Remove from water and examine it.
    You may need to boil again and ice bath again. Just remember to be gentle-it could snap if you apply force too quickly. It should want to return to the form it was given by the mold process. Once removed and left to cool, some Bones minis tend to sag, and thus bendy weapons happen.
    Check the mini again the following day. Sometimes a mini might need a further treatment. But most should be fixed by now.
    Hope this helps someone!

    These look really cool! As a scale modeler new to the mini painting hobby, this is right up my alley. I'm glad you talked about a greater focus on D&D minis. I have zero interest in playing Warhammer, which seems to get the lion's share of attention on the TH-cam mini painting channels. But I do love fantasy and D&D and have been buying some Reaper Black and Nolzur's models. (The hard plastic Reaper minis are far superior.) Also, those fiddly bits don't seem too bad. Wait until you've built 1/72 tank models, where some parts are literally the size of a pin head!

    I have played TTRPGs for roughly 10-11 years without ever using minis for it. 99% of the time it's been either theater of the mind or roll20 with tokens and maps.
    The 1% left is for the two times I played with LEGO models to try and replicate a battlefield, technically used as minis without bases.
    Though I recently painted my first 2 rpg character models (that are also my first heavy conversions) and it was great ! I'm planning on doing that more with my more recent groups, even though we won't play with minis

    Staying strictly with multi-part polystyrene minis, I consider the various Frostgrave miniatures packs to be an excellent choice. They don't have a D&D logo on the box, of course.
    Good to see that this batch, at least, is more consistently sculpted than the regular line of WizKids minis. (The best of that line are quite good, the worst ... really aren't.)

    Good video; it was fun to seeing you these characters to life in such vibrant color. The miniature sculpts do look good - but the price point seems a bit high, honestly. Check out Reaper's black line - which is much improved version of their previous bones line. (No customization offered of course). Frost grave's line of miniatures are plastic/ on frame - and offer a lot of customization, plus good detail. (I've used them for rpgs.)

    I have a feeling the D&D community is less interested in high quality paintjobs is because monster models are typically only used once, whereas scenery is more generic and can be reused. That said, I usually put a lot of effort into painting my PCs. Makes them feel less disposable.

    These minis look really nice (and the totally-not-Drizzt would be perfect for the character I will start playing in our new campaign next week), but I've only ever painted pre-assembled and primed minis so far. I will say that as far as tools go, you can get by with dikes and a boxcutter for cutting and cleaning parts off the sprue. I built alot of models without special tools in that regard, but the tools make the process easier, but for a one-off build they would do just fine.

I'm hoping they include the legendary Warduke character, that would be awesome! Framework Minis do look amazing! But I will personally always love the unpainted Wizkids sentiment. There are indeed often bend parts but it takes less than a minute and very low effort to fix them. Wiggle the bend part in hot, almost boiling water, straighten it and put it in cold or running water - fixed. Learned this quite recently, and it has changed my painting life, so I really wanted to share this tip! Happy painting =)
